"Shots fired!" shouted Tara. "Repeat, shots fired."

All units indicated that they were expediting to the scene.

"Jack! Are you OK? Please respond."

____________________________________________

Jack lay back against the steps. He could barely breath at all. The bullet had hit his vest right under his heart, in that tender spot at the top of the abdomen. He heard more gun shots. He had lost vision for a bit, but it was beginning to come back. He heard Tara calling to him as if from a long distance, at least he thought it was Tara. maybe it was Sue. He called out, but he wasn't sure who he was calling to. Then he wasn't sure that he had actually called out. He realized that he was sucking air pretty good. He focused on breathing. Then he knew that it was Tara calling to him.

"Jack, please respond."

He sat up slowly. "I think I'm OK, Tara."

When he finally got upright, he saw Demetrius Jones laying in a pool of his own blood.

"Tara. Demetrius has been shot. He's bleeding all over."

______________________________________________

Tara informed the others. "Agent down. Repeat, agent down. Demetrius Jones has been shot."

Bobby was the first to respond. "We're arriving at the scene right now."

Tara immediately told Jack. "Jack, Bobby and Sue are there."

"Ok. You can tell them that we are in the basement. I don't think we can save Demetrius. It appears that Phil Thompson has fled through a door in a wall down here. It appears to be a tunnel leading away from here to the north I think. I'm going after him."

"Jack, backup is there. Wait for them."

"He's going to get away unless I act fast. I'm going after him."

________________________________________________

Jack had his flashlight shining down the dark tunnel as he ran. The tunnel seemed to go forever. Jack felt like he had just ran the length of about three football fields when he finally got to the end. There were some sharply inclined stairs set into the dirt. At the top of those stairs was a door hanging wide open. On the other side, he saw the faint glow of the city, and he heard some traffic in the distance.

He climbed up the steps slowly. As he stepped out the door, which was parallel with the ground, he looked in every direction, taking everything in. There were some railroad tracks nearby. He looked quickly down at the door, and he noticed that it was set into a metal frame, and there was a pile of gravel on the other side of the door as if the door had been covered with that gravel. As he was wondering just how strong this Thompson fellow was to be able to push open a door covered with gravel, he noticed a running figure in the distance. He was right next to the railroad track, and he was running to the nearest intersection where there was a car parked by the road.

Jack took off running while he relayed to Tara what he had found, and what he was doing. He was huffing hard. He was willing to bet that he had a pretty good bruise on his abdomen. It started to hurt as he thought about it, as if to confirm it.

"Focus on Thompson." he thought to himself. "Stop!" he yelled out loud. "FBI! Stop!"

Thompson was way ahead. He probably couldn't even hear Jack. Jack did his best, but he just couldn't get there in time before Thompson got into the car, started it up and drove away across the tracks. As Jack saw him drive off, he heard a train horn blowing in the distance. Right when Jack got to the intersection, the crossing arms came down, and the train came blowing buy. Jack looked down at the base of the nearest crossing arm. There lay a fresh bouquet of flowers. It was a memorial. Jack realized that this must be the intersection where Thompson's family had died.

____________________________________________

Bobby made his way into the basement. He easily found Demetrius Jones. He was also able to easily recognize at least two wounds in his head, one on the temple, and one in between the eyes. Jack had been right. There was no help for Demetrius.

He looked up and saw the door leading to the tunnel right in front of him. He informed Tara that he was going after Jack, and ran into the tunnel. It was a particularly long tunnel. Bobby guessed that it probably took Thompson a year or more to dig it all out. At the end, he noted the steps that Jack had mentioned. He went up slowly, looking all around. He saw Jack heading toward him.

"What happened?"

Jack looked a little startled, like he didn't realize Bobby was there.

"Are you ok?" he asked.

"Yeah." Jack responded. "He ran over there to that crossing. He had a car waiting there for him. He drove away before I could get there. I think that crossing is where his family died. There are some memorial flowers laying there."

Bobby sighed. "He got away." Then he noticed that Jack was still winded. "Jack, are you sure you're ok?"

"Yeah. It's just that he shot me right here." He pointed. Bobby saw the hole in the vest. I think I bruised pretty good. I should be all right if I can sit down and rest a while."

"All right mate. Look, this is a long tunnel. How about I have someone come around and pick us up so that you don't have to go all the way back through that tunnel. Have a seat."

Jack sat down. As Bobby talked to the others about where they were, Jack noticed that it was beginning to snow. He had forgotten. There was a big storm coming up the coast.

Jack and Sue watched as Demetrius' body was taken out of the house on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance. "It's all my fault." commented Jack.

Sue had only seen his lips move out of the corner of her eye so she wasn't sure what he said. "What was that? What did you say?"

Jack was sure to look right at her this time. "I said, 'It's all my fault.' I mean that Demetrius Jones is dead. I had my gun pointing right at Thompson. I thought of shooting, but I didn't because I thought I might hit Demetrius instead. Now, he's dead, and it's all because I hesitated. If only I had shot Thompson when it first entered my head, then maybe Demetrius might still be alive."

"Do you hear what you're saying? You're telling me that you didn't shoot because you might have hit Demetrius. Well, what if you did shoot and you did hit Demetrius instead of Thompson? Maybe then Phil thompson would have been sure to kill you because you had robbed him of his victim. And what kinds of questions would you be asking yourself then if you did shoot Demetrius. You'd ask yourself, 'What was I thinking? I should have known that I might hit Demetrius.' Jack, you are not responsible for the death of Demetrius Jones. Phil Thompson is the one who shot at you to get you out of the way, and then he finished what he started."

Jack thought about it for a moment and then looked at Sue with a bit of a sheepish grin. "You're right."

"Of course I am. I know I'm right because you're the one who taught me that principle in life. Remember? After our first case when Levi was shot, I blamed myself for everything, and you told me what kind of hogwash I was believing. And now look, you're saying the same kind of foolishness that I was."

"Yeah, what's wrong with me? I can't even practice what I preach, huh?"

"Well, maybe not, but at least you're still alive to say so. Seriously, these are the days that I hate most about this job. And it seems that of all the people I care for, you tend to have the most close calls."

"Well, what can I say? I guess I just have a nose for trouble."

Levi moaned a bit and shoved his nose toward Jack's hand. Jack said, "What's the matter Levi? Do you have a nose for trouble too?"

Levi just moaned again and pushed harder at Jack's hand. Sue smiled. She wasn't the only one concerned about Jack. She pulled her coat around her more and looked around at the commotion that was slowly beginning to be covered over by the snow. When she looked back to Jack he commented, "Well, I don't think you have to dream of a white Christmas this year. We got it."

____________________________________________

Later that morning, Jack had another press conference before the snow got bad. After the reporters finally calmed down, Jack began.

"As you all know, we here at the bureau have lost another of our agents to the murderous hands of Phil Thompson. I cannot give you details, but I can definetely tell you this. Phil Thompson is a very dangerous man. If you see him, do not engage him at all. Call 911 immediately. Also, if you know anything about his whereabouts, we are still encouraging you to call our hotline.

"I know that you all are also wondering what kind of effect this storm is going to have on our investigation. Well, let me be candid. The snow may be slowing us down a bit, but we are by no means going to just sit by and allow Phil thompson to kill again. We are going to be out and searching for him to the best of our ability. We will not give up until Phil Thompson is either dead or behind bars.

"Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a murderer to go look for."

_____________________________________________

Shortly after the press conference, Jack got another phone call to his desk. The operator told himthat it was Thompson. "Put him on."

He got everyon'es attention as he turned on the speakerphone. "Hello Phil."

"Hello Jack. I just watched your most recent press conference. Do you really think you'll be able to catch me?"

"You betcha. But we don't have to go through all that. You can come and turn yourself in, and then we can get you the professional help you need."

"I don't need professional help Jack. What I need is for other people to hate Christmas like I do. For the past two years, Christmas has only been pain to me. Someone else has to know what that's like."

"But Phil, there are already many people who feel like that. The statistics of people who struggle and kill themselves in the Christmas season is extraordinarily high. Catastrophies already happen to many other people around Christmas. You're only making it worse for them, and you're not helping yourself."

"You can try to talk me out of this Jack, but it won't work. The nightmare continues. Only now, because you have apparently figured out some of my secrets, it will be different."

And then he hung up. Jack hung up too. He looked around to the people working with him. After a few moments, he said, "Well people, he may be unpredictable, but we found him once, we can do it again. We have many tips to follow up on from the hotline. I know it's hard driving out there, but we gotta keep going. That's the only way we'll find him. Let's go!"

John came back inside from the garage. "Jane!"

Jane came out from the bathroom, one of the places John commonly found her for the past nine months. "Yes honey."

"Back in your office again, huh."

Jane gave him a look. "At least one of us is. Don't you think you should at least try to get in to yours?"

"Well actually, that's what I wanted to talk to you about. The roads are so treacherous out there, I don't think I'm going to make it. How about I call in, and we just spend the day together. It'll be just you and me. After all, we won't get to do that for very many more times before the baby comes."

"Well that's true. And, if we can't get out because of the weather, i doubt that we have to worry about murderers coming in or anything like that. Even murderers have to drive."

"That's true. So, you feel a bit safer and more secure today?"

"Yeah," she said as she stepped cloesr and took his hand, "I think I do."

"Oh good. Me too."

"Do you remember what happened the last time we got snowed in?" she asked as she really leaned in close to him.

"Oh, do you mean the day that we conceived last March? How can I forget that? Well, what else is a person to do in March when we get a rare blizzard in the spring?"

"I don't know. Why shouldn't we have a day like that now?"

"I can't think of one reason. Here, let me call in to work, and then we'll meet in the bedroom, OK?"

"Sure. But I'm taking my pre-mid-morning snack with me."

"Fine with me. I'll see you in there."

Later that night, Sue joined Jack as he looked out the window of the Hoover Building. There was a ton of snow and wind was blowing like crazy. Jack turned and made sure Sue was looking. "They say that the storm has slowed down and has almost stalled over D.C. Ten inches of snow and still going at the last report I heard."

Sue started rubbing her arms instinctively as she thought of the cold and snow. "Do you think that he's going to try and kill again tonight?"

Jack shook his head a bit. "I don't know. It's hard to say. He could be taking a big risk if he does. I mean, if he goes driving on the roads, any police officer could try to pull him over. Also, he may not have a very easy escape from any body if he gets caught in the act. There's a lot of ice and snow out there."

"I heard that the heaviest snow is almost here. The last report that I heard was that they expect a total of fifteen inches or more."

Jack stepped away from the window and moved back toward his desk. Sue followed. "Sue, you haven't seen Myles or Bobby tonight have you?"

She shook her head. "The last I knew, they were both out trying to follow up on a tip from the hotline."

Tara had overheard Jack's question. "Uh, I just got a call from them. They said that they are trying to get back here, and they estimate that at the rate they are going, it could take up to an hour or more."

"Thanks, Tara." Jack then looked right at Sue. Sue was yawning. "Sue, why don't you get some sleep? I don't think that there's much good in staying up at the moment."

Sue finished her yawn and then looked at him. "OK, you have a deal under one condition."

"What's that?"

"You get some sleep too. If it's not much good for me, then it's not much good for you."

Jack couldn't think of a good excuse so he agreed. "Alright. You got a deal."

Jane and John had just finished one of the most wonderful days that they had ever enjoyed together. Besides their fun time in bed first thing in the morning, they had played some card games, board games, cooking lessons in new recipes, taking turns at different kinds of massage, etc. As the two started to settle down for the night, having enjoyed such a wonderful day together, Jane leaned over toward her husband on the bed, making sure her belly was right up against him. John rubbed her belly gently, enjoying the feel of their baby boy moving around in her belly.

"I can't wait for this little fellow to come out." said John.

"Yeah, no kidding. I've been ready for him to come out for weeks. I'm tired of all the aches and pains of pregnancy, AND, I really wanna see this little guys face." Jane said with a wrinkle of her nose. "And can you imagine what his little body is going to be like? I take a look at the little newborn clothes we've got for him, and I wonder how a person can really be that small." Jane paused for a moment, and John enjoyed the sparkle in his wife's eyes. "Have you thought, John, about what his little fingers and toes are going to look like?"

John nodded. Then he noted a particularly big kick coming from her belly. "Wow. Did you eat some Wheaties for him today or what? After a kick like that, it's a wonder that your gown didn't come flying off your belly!"

Jane smiled and giggled at the notion. Jane reached down and held John's hand. "I love you." She reached over with her head and gavde him a peck on the cheek. "It really makes me feel good to know that you're looking forward to our son as much as I am. I'm glad to know that there's at least one man on the planet who sees the value of sex beyond pleasure."

John got a quizzical look on his face. "You know," he commented, "there are some people who contend that sex is only supposed to be for procreation, and strictly not for pleasure. Some of those people are men."

Jane laughed. "Oh yeah? Well, I've never met them."

"So?"

"You know, from the way you've been acting of recent, I would dare say that you see some value in the pleasure of sex."

Jane suddenly got a very seductive look in her eyes. "I never said that there wasn't any value to pleasure." Then she leaned over with her head and planted a very passionate kiss on his lips. Of course, he enjoyed that kiss....and a whole lot more.

December 19

It was just a little past midnight. Phil Thompson looked out the window of the abandoned house he was in. He had been sure to park his car out of sight, and out of the snow. Now, he had to figure out some way to continue the nightmare in spite of the snow. He knew that anywhere he went in the snow would leave tracks, so he had to have a good plan.

He noticed a house across the nearby intersection with a small glowing light upstairs. He had a plan all of a sudden. He would drive over in front of the house...no a little past the house...right after the snow plow went through. That way there would be litle chance of having a confrontation with a plow driver. Then, he would break into the house, kill someone, and then leave as quickly as possible the same way he came. He knew that he was taking a big chance that there could be more than one person in the house, but he had to continue the nightmare. His selfish agony demanded it.

________________________________________________

John woke up hearing Jane scream. He sat up quickly and reached over, hand on her back. "Honey, what is it?!"

Jane was sitting up and holding her stomach. "John, I think it's time."

John didn't know what to say or do at first. His mouth moved a little bit like he thought he should say something, but he didn't know what. He decided to ask and make sure he heard correctly. "It's time?"

Jane shot him a look. "That's what I said! Now come on, we have to get up, call the doctor and go to the hospital."

John started to get up and pull his pants on. Jane did her best to get up and get dressed also. As she stepped over to the dresser, she suddenly felt a warm gudh of fluid down her legs. "John. My water just broke."

John came over, unsure what to do. "Uh, OK. Well, I'll clean that up another time. Do you want a towel for now?"

Jane shot him another look. "No, I think I'll just stand her with wet legs until they dry in the air." she said very sarcastically.

John didn't respond. He just headed for the linen closet in the bathroom. He started to wonder if she was going to be like this for the rest of the night. He was only trying to help. As he pulled a towel out, he heard Jane scream again. He figured that it was probably just another contraction, but he walked back a little faster this time, just in case. When he got back, he saw something that he didn't expect.

Jane was being held by a masked man, with a gun to her head. The man cocked his pistol for effect and then made his demands. "OK, buddy. I want you to give me all the money in your safe. If you don't, I'll kill her."

John was stunned. "Ok, OK! Um, wait a minute. Um the safe is over in the study. I'll have to go over there to get it."

"Alright." the robber said. "I'll follow you. Walk lady."

John turned and headed for the study, looking back as often as he could to make sure Jane was OK. Jane started walking also, but she was talking to the robber. "Please, I'm nine months pregnant, and I'm in labor. I'm having a baby."

"Shutup and walk."

Jane stumbled. John stopped. The robber pulled her back on her feet, and then pointed the gun at John. "Keep walking! Both of you.!"

John slowly turned and continued toward the study. He walked in, and headed right behind his desk. The safe was back there. The gun was also in the desk drawer.

____________________________________________

Phil Thompson broke into the house very quietly. He didn't see any lights down stairs. He wasn't too surprised about that. He headed up the stairs as quietly as he could, making very little noise. Before he got to the top, he heard a commotion. He headed toward the commotion. He heard a crash, and a woman screaming. Suddenly he wasn't sure he wanted to be where he was. He considered leaving, but then he listened to what the screaming woman was saying.

"Please, I'm begging you to stop! I'm having a baby, and I need to get to the hospital!"

Phil stopped at those words. "A baby?" he thought to himself. He remembered his own baby that he lost two years before. He stepped closer to the room that looked a bit like a study. He did his best to just peek in through the door. He saw a man with a gun pointed at a woman who was on all fours on the floor behind the desk. She appeared to be trying to unlock a safe. There was another man there laying on the floor behind the desk. He appeared to be knocked out.

The woman finally got the safe open, sobbing the whole time. She opened the safe door, and the masked man with the gun yanked her out of the way. She screamed again and held her stomach. He got into the safe, and pulled out some money. He also pulled out a bunch of papers and other items. The man turned back too the woman. "That's it? That's all you got?"

"Yes that's all. Now please, I need to get to the hospital."

The man was obviously angry. "No. No! I need more than this. All right. You are going to have to endure something else instead."

The woman began to back away from the masked man as best she could from the floor. "What? What do you want?"

The man got a very evil look in his eyes. "I've never had sex with a woman in labor before."

The woman screamed, louder than anything Phil had heard from her so far. The man set his gun aside, and lunged toward the woman. She creamed and kicked. The man tried to get a good hold on her while he pulled on her hair and at her gown.

Phil watched in horror. "What about the baby?" he thought. He had to do something. He looked down and realized that he had the string of Christmas lights in his hands. He pulled them tight as he looked up and waited for a good chance.

The woman was able to plant a good kick on the attacker. He fell back, but in the wrong direction. Phil was almost giving himself away as he stood waiting. The man lunged back at her, but he tripped on one of the unconscious man's feet. He fell past the woman, and landed face first on the floor. He turned over and sat up, and Phil knew his chance had come.

Phil yelled out and lunged forward all at once. He wrapped the string of lights around the neck of the masked man as quickly as he could, and he pulled tight. The woman screamed again. The masked man reached up to his neck and tried to eip the string of lights off, but it wouldn't work. The masked man slowly began to fight less and less, until he finally fell limp. Phil held the string tight for a while longer just to make sure. He didn't want the man to suddenly get a burst of oxygen and then live to really put up a good fight.

When he dared, Phil let the man drop to the floor. He stood up, and looked over at the woman. She looked back at him terrified. "Please," she whispered quietly. "Please don't hurt me."

Phil stepped a bit closer, and she backed away. "I'm not going to hurt you." he said. "Lady, listen. I started killing people because I was hurting inside. I killed people because my Christmas was ruined by someone who killed my family. I din't want to hurt you lady. My greatest pain was from knowing that my little baby wasn't going to get to live a life. I don't want your baby to die. I did this so that your baby could live. Please lady, let me help you."

The woman sat quietly, not sure what to make of the situation. "Will you call 911 for me."

Suddenly phil realized what price he would have to pay for helping her. He thought for a moment. He realized that he couldn't turn back now. he had to help the baby. "Yeah." he said. He whipped out his cell phone. "Yeah, I'll call 911."

_____________________________________________

Laura Williams had been working for emergency dispatch for many years. She had all kinds of calls for help come to her over the phone...or so she thought. She had been working hard for much of the day, calling out police, ambulance, fire, all for accidents and other difficulties related to this massive snow storm. The last thing she expected was what she heard from her phone near 1:30 that morning. She started this call as she did every previous call that night.

"911, is this an emergency?"

"Uh, Yeah. Yeah this is an emergency. Listen, this is going to sound weird, but I need you to trust me."

"Sir, you would be surprised what kinds of weird calls I get every day. Why don't you try me, but I don't promise to trust you."

"Right. Listen, Laura, this is Phil Thompson. I broke into a house tonight to kill someone, but I ended up stopping a robbery instead."

"What? Phil? Is that really you?"

"Yeah, Laura, it's me."

"You know people have been looking all over for you. Where are you."

He told her the address. She stopped a bit before she typed it into her computer. She knew that he was on a cell phone, because the call tracing wasn't kicking in. But she had to ask him to repeat. "Did you say 34th Street NW?"

"Yes, I broke into the home of... hang on."

She heard him pause for a bit and ask someone who she was. In the back ground, she heard a woman respond. "I broke into the home of John and Jane Carpenter.

"Listen," he continued. "When I broke in, I intended to kill someone, but there was already someone here robbing the people. That guy knocked out John in the process, and he was going to rape Jane. But the thing is, Jane is in labor. We need police and ambulance here pronto."

Laura heard the woman scream in the back ground. Then she heard Phil ask her, "What?!"

"Phil, what's going on?" asked Laura.

"Oh, um, Laura, she feels like she had to push. Get some help coming, but I think I'm going to have to deliver this baby."

Laura wasn't sure how to progress. A man wanted for being a serial killer had called 911 for help because the person he was going to kill was attacked, and now is having a baby, and he may have to deliver it.

"OK, wait a minute Phil. Before you do anything, put the lady on the phone."

"Ok. Jane, she wants to talk to you."

Jane took the phone. "Hello."

"Maam, has the man I was just talking to you hurt you at all?"

"No maam. He saved me."

Laura felt a little bit of relief because she corroborated his story. "Maam, are you pregnant and in labor?"

"Yes." That made her feel even better.

"OK, how long have you been in labor?"

"I don't know. I was already in labor when I woke up tonight."

"Has your water broke?"

"Yes."

"When did that happen?"

"Right before the attack, and that just happened."

"Were you hurt in the attack?"

"Not seriously, but I don't know about the baby, and my husband has been knocked out behind the desk for awhile now."

"OK, we're going to get you some help. Please give the phone back."

Phil took the phone back. Laura told him, "Phil, I'm going to call for some help. Don't do anything until I give you instructions. I know you had training for this kind of thing in the force, but things are a bit different this time, because she's been involved in an attack. After I call for help, I'll walk you through everything you need to do. OK?"

"Ok Laura."

Jack was running through the snow crowded treets of Washington D.C. He was looking for someone, but he wasn't sure who. He jumped over snow banks and into the streets, barely being missed by cars. He came to a corner, and then he saw them.

"Sue! SSSSUUUUEEEE!!!!!"

He ran down the street after them. He had to save her. How could he do this to her? He knew he was capable of killing agents, but not Sue. Phil Thompson was dragging Sue's dead body through the snow by a string of lights that was wrapped around her neck. Jack ran until he got to them, and he grabbed Thompson by the shoulder, ready to knock his lights out. Instead though, Phil got right into his face and shouted, "Wake up Jack! Wake up!"

Jack started awake with a jolt. He had been sleeping on a cot in a side room. Now, he was sitting upright holding onto the arm of the person waking him. It was Lucy. Jack was relieved to realize that he had been dreaming instead of living that dream. Talk about a nightmare on 34th Street.

"Jack, sorry to disturb you, but this is important. We just got a phone call from Metro P.D. Phil Thompson called 911 for help from a 34th Street NW address."

"Northwest?"

"Yeah. He says that he broke into a home there to kill someone, but he walked in on a robbery gone bad. The robber knocked out the husband, and tried to rape the wife. The sick part is that the wife is pregnant and in labor. Well, anyway, Phil saved her, and now he's assisting her with her labor while Metro is responding. They want us there ASAP."

Jack was wide awake now. "Lucy, help me get everyone around."

Jack ran out of the side room. Tara was still typing away at her computer, although she looked like she was about to fall asleep. Jack pounded on her desk. "Tara, wake up!"

She jerked up straight. "I am! I'm awake! What's going on?"

"Help me get everyone around!"

In moments, everyone was awake and in the bullpen. Jack briefied everyone quickly. "Listen. Phil Thompson is currently involved in making a 911 call from an address on 34th Street NW."

"Northwest?" asked Bobby.

"Yes, Northwest. Right now, he is assisting a pregnant woman who has been attacked and is in labor. We have to get there ASAP."

Myles looked out the window and protested, "In this weather? In this weather, we'll be lucky to get there before next year!"

"Tara! Call City Hall or whoever and make sure the snow plows plow out as amny raods betseen here and there as possible."

Tara was already dialing the phone. "I'm on it!"

"Come on people, let's go!"

__________________________________________

Upon arriving at the scene, Jack and Sue who was riding with him got out and approached the officers at the scene. The rest of the team quickly followed. Jack spoke up. "What you got?"

The officer turned and saw them. "Oh, thank goodness you're here. You'llmake this situation a lot less complex by taking Phil Thompson into custody. He's over there." The officer pointed toward a patrol car across the street. Jack motioned to Myles and bobby, and they walked over to get him.

"What else?" asked Jack.

"When we got here, we found him upstairs with the lady. Her name is Jane Carpenter. She was holding her newborn baby boy. When we took Phil into custody, she asked to be gentle, because he had saved her and her baby. The baby and his mother are in good condition, but the husband, John Carpenter, has been sent to the hospital already. I think he has a concussion, but other than that, it looks like he'll be OK. He did wake up before we got him onto the ambulance. He couldn't remember everything that happened, but the rest of his memory seemed to be there.

"Here's the most interesting part. The burglar was dead. he was killed apparently by strangulation with a string of Christmas lights. It does look like he saved her. When we took the mask off the guy, we found who he was. He was our prime suspect in the robbery and rape cases that we've been investigating for the past few months. All in one night, we have caught two bad guys in two very unusual ways. One bad guy, who used to be a good guy became a hero all over again, although he's still wanted for murder."

The officer stopped and looked jack and Sue in the eye, one at a time. "This is a strange one folks, but it's strange in a good way. Kinda. It's almost like a miracle or something."

Jack and Sue looked at each other in bewilderment. Then they noticed Bobby and Myles coming over with Phil Thompson. Thompson spoke up. "I went in to kill, but I couldn't do it. At least, not like I planned. He was going to end up the hurting the baby. I just knew it. I had to do something...for the sake of the baby."

Sue spoke up in response. "In a way Mr. Thompson, this baby was born and saved you from your own evil. You now have a chance to turn your life around."

Phil looked at her and nodded. "Yeah, you're right."

"You know," Sue continued, "There was snother baby born long ago to sdave you from your own evil as well. It was Jesus. 33 years after his birth, he died on the cross to save you from your sins."

"But that was different. He was a grown man when he died."

Sue shook her head. "It's not different. I know it's not, because I know what my mother is like. To her, I will always be her little baby girl no matter how old I am. I know, that's the way it is with God too. Jesus will always be his Son. And He allowed His son to be born, so that he could pay the price to save you from your own evil."

Phil stopped and thought a bit. "I'll have to think about that a bit."

Bobby finished it up. "You'll have plenty of time for it where you're going. Come on." And then Bobby and Myles took him over to there car to take him away.

Sue looked at Jack. "You heard the Metro officer. It's almost like a miracle or something. And look." Sue pointed to the street sign. "We're on 34th Street."

Jack looked, and then looked back at Sue with a smile. "It almost seems to good to be true. We've got our own Miracle On 34th Street." Sue smiled back. "Come on. Let's finish what we've got to do here, and then we can celebrate our miracle with a day off and some rest." Sue nodded, and followed Jack.
