Bobby and Myles took their seperate seats at the border office where a frightened woman of about 28 sat with her daughter of about 6.
"Ma'am, are you Karlee Richardson?" The woman looked from Myles to Bobby. She slowly nodded as she hugged her daugheter closer to her. "And would this be Sara?" The little girl nodded and Bobby smiled. "I've heard alot about you, It's nice to meet you." He said as he held out his hand to which she gently took and shook lightly. The woman gave a weak smile.
"I didn't kidnap my daughter. I had her. I was just.. What are you going to do with me?" Her tone was stifled with fear and Bobby had to look away from her tearing and pleading eyes. Myles shook his head.
"Ma'am from what we understand, you took you're daughter on you're own time with her but you didn't have permission to leave D.C. with her."
"How do you know about me?"
"Jeff came to us asking for our help in finding out more about his daughter's dissapearance."
"He said you kidnapped." Her posture suddenly became very defiant.
"Did he also say that I was crazy and suicidal?" Myles and Bobby exchanged a glanced before looking back and nodding. She shook her head and her daughter looked towards the vending maching.
"Mama, may I get a candy bar?" Karlee looked up and gave Sara a quarter.
"Yes honey." They watched the girl walk to the machine and carefully look over ever feature. "My daughter was hurt. Jeff hurt her. He hit me and then he hit her. Every night it was the same thing. If he came late for picking her up he would get mad at me, saying that I had kept her too long and that he would make sure that I would have my rights taken away. I was so scared. Last time he came at me with a knife."
"Ma'am, you need to understand where we're coming from though. We have to believe the first story in hopes that that is correct but fortunately for you, you're husband isn't here."
"Where is he?"
"We don't know. He ran away shortly after we found out about.. the abuse."
"How?"
"We saw several family pictures where you and your daughter had bruises. One of our members pointed this out." The woman nodded as she slowly rolled up her sleeves. Several of both big and small bruises lined her arms.
"People would always ask me why I wore long sleeve shirts in the summer. Do you know why? I didn't do this to myself. I could only think of one way out and that was to take my daughter to safety!"
The two men nodded again and Myles said, "Where were you going?"
"My mother and father live just outside of D.C." Myles slowly stood and motioned to Bobby.
"We'll be right back." They walked a little further away then stopped. "What do you think?" Bobby asked, his face a mask of horror and anger.
"I don't know. She'll have to come with us but I won't press charges that's for sure." Bobby nodded.
"Is there anyway we could get any charges she might get dropped?" Myles shrugged.
"I don't know. I guess we'll find out when we bring her in." Bobby nodded sadly. They then turned back to Karlee and Sara who was walking happily towards them.
"Miss Richardson, I hate to say this, but you're under arrest." Karlee nodded.
"I knew it was only a matter of time. Bobby took her arm and directed her out, Sara following slowly behind with Myles following behind her.

Jack, Sue and Bobby stood in the mirror room, looking at Karlee Richardson through the glass.
"Is she okay?" Sue asked, immediately sensing the woman's fears. Jack and Bobby both shrugged.
"Sue, you can't take her side yet. I mean I know she's pretty inoccent but we have to be sure."
"But after you've made sure, you can make sure she doesn't go to jail for saving her own life and her daughters?" Jack looked to Bobby who shrugged sadly. Sue shook her head angirly then walked out, closing the door loudly behind her. Jack sighed.
--
Sue spotted Sara sitting in the bullpen with Tara and Lucy.
"See, if you press that, you can see what you look like without hair." Sue smiled as the girl clicked the button then giggled shyly.
"Thankyou Miss Tara." Tara looked up with a melting heart smile and Lucy giggled.
"Would you like to meet Levi now?" Lucy asked, seeing Sue and Levi. Sara nodded slowly as she jumped off the chair and walked to Sue.
"May I pet your doggie?" She asked quietly. Sue nodded with a smile. The girl gently touched Levi's soft coat and smiled as he nudged her side. She giggled.
"I think he likes you." Sue said with a smile.
"He's beautiful." Sara stated as she bent down to pet the dog more thoroughly. "Is he your dog?" Sue nodded.
"Yes, he's my hearing dog. He's like my ears." The girl suddenly jumped up and motioned for Sue to come down to her level. Sue did so. Carefully, the girl looked over Sue's face.
"But Miss Sue, you have ears." Lucy and Tara snickered behind her and Sue smiled.
"You're right I do. But they don't work."
"You mean like a wire is disconnected?" The girls sincerity cause Sue to chuckle.
"Something like that."
"Oh. Well you should get that checked out." Sara said, matter-of-factly and the girls collapsed in giggles. Just then, a tall, red haired woman walked in.
"I'm sorry to interrupt but, Sara Richardson?" The girl nodded slowly, fear slowly creeping into her eyes. "Can you come with me sweetheart? I need to ask you a few questions." Sara immediately put her thumb in her mouth and Sue knelt back down beside her.
"Sara, how about this, if you're really good, you can come back here and meet Jack." The girl's eyes lit up.
"Who's Jack?"
"He's a really good friend of mine and he'd love you." Sara nodded with a small smile.
"Okay, Miss Sue, I'll be good."
"Good girl." Sue gave her a gentle pat then Sara walked proudly towards the woman who mouthed thankyou to Sue. She nodded as the girl was led out.

Jack saw Sue's faraway look as soon as he entered the bullpen. Karlee Richardson seemed less like a suspect and more like the victim by every coming moment. He had no idea where her daughter was and she was scared that Jeff would have come to take her. But, Jack had reassured her that if Jeff had come, they would have taken him into custody. The woman was genuinely frightened of Jeff's name let alone a picture of him. She would glance away to the window and stare out, reciting what had happened to her and Sara that had made her want to leave. It sounded like a novel that went horribly wrong. Jack shook his head, attempting to get the words and mental images out of his mind. It was a lost cause. He stopped at Sue's desk and gave a weak smile as she glanced up to him.
"You okay?" He signed, hoping to get a better answer then a shrug. She gave him one. She sighed then looked directly into his eyes, telling him that he wasn't supposed to speak.
"Why does stuff like that happen to innocent people?" Jack shrugged.
"I don't know. If I did.. I'd hate myself." She nodded.
"I just can't understand how someone like Jeff who came across as the victim could hurt someone so much."
"What do you mean?"
"I met Sara."
"Where is she now?"
"Social Services is asking her some questions. I promised her that if she was good she could come back here and meet you." He smiled.
"Are you sure that's a good idea?"
"Well, I had nothing else. She had already met Levi and it didn't looke like she was going to go otherwise." He gave her a wink before turning back to his desk with a smile.

The walk was slow and painful. The silence was unbearable. Bobby and Jack walked quietly, not letting eachother know what they were thinking. But, of course, they both knew. They had talked at the pub but it wasn't much. Bobby had said little but what he had had hit Jack hard.
"I can't understand how a man like Jeff can take a woman like Karlee and totally wreck her life." It didn't matter to Jeff Taylor that he was both physically and emotionally hurting his wife. Karlee had told the two men horror stories about when they were together. And then when she had Sara.. Jack had to walk away from her when she had told him about that. He found himself in the bathroom, throwing water at his face, attempting to make the horrible shaky feeling go away. And now, as the two friends walked, Jack wanted to talk.
"Say something." He said quietly. Bobby simply shrugged.
"What's there to say?"
"Nothing I guess. It's just.. I almost think I'd rather work with a murderer then this."
"Why?"
"Because at least when a murderer kills someone, it's over. For Karlee.. it never ended. And now the poor girl has to go to a foster home because her dad would hurt her otherwise. It makes me sick." He spit out the words and Bobby smiled.
"You thinking of taking her?"
"Who?"
"Sara." Jack chuckled.
"Nice thought but I don't even know the girl."
"Maybe not but.. You know, You and Sue could get married and take her." Jack gave him another elbow to the chest and Bobby laughed.
"What about you and Tara?"
"Nah. I'm no good with kids."
"Well I guess we'll see when we all meet Sara tomorrow. From what Sue told me, she sounds like a pretty sweet little.." Two gunshots cut the sentence off as both Bobby and Jack jumped down, acting on instinct as a sign from above fell to the ground. Jack glanced around immediately after the bullets ceased to come. He saw a white car speeding away from the park across the street. He grabbed his cellphone in flash speed and dialed. "This is Agent Hudson, we have a driveby shooting at Conway and Park Ave. White car. Mercedes.."
"Jack." His words were stopped again as he glanced down and saw Bobby laying on the ground, a splotch of red blood quickly spreading.
"Oh My.. We need an ambulance. We have a victim down!"

Jack practically threw the cellphone in his pocket and knelt beside his friend who was breathing eratically.
"Bobby, Bobby are you okay?" Bobby shrugged.
"Well unless that was a paintball game and they were using red paint, no I'm not fine."
"At least your still in good humour." The blood was still coming and Jack felt the fear creeping into him. "That's a nice hole you got there." Bobby shrugged again.
"Well you know, you kept getting all the fun so I figured I might as well."
"Okay, stop it. How bad is it?"
"It's pretty good. Got me right there." He said, pointing to the spot in his leg where the blood stain was growing. "Darn. And these were my good pants too." Jack was interrupted from smacking Bobby when a cop car arrived.
"Did you call?" The officer asked, getting out of the car quickly. Jack nodded as he stood.
"I'm Agent Hudson. This is Agent Manning. Whoever was shooting got him in the leg." Bobby nodded, then started to stand. The officer stopped him.
"Okay, wait just a second. Let's just wait for the ambulance. I assume you called one?" Jack nodded. "Alright."
--
Jack sat in the waiting room of the hospital, waiting patiently for the news on Bobby. He had been taken in for a quick surgery that was simply removing the bullet and stiching him up. He spotted a woman with a golden retriever coming towards him. She was older then Sue, yet something about her remided him or her. Since there were only 3 seats in the small room, he smiled and ushered for her to take the seat next to his. She smiled back.
"Thankyou." Her voice was strikingly familiar.
"Nice dog." She smiled again.
"He's my hearing dog."
"No way." He smiled. "I have a friend who's deaf too. She has a Golden Retriever."
"Oh really? What's her name?"
"Sue Thomas."
"Well that's so funny. We met before."
"Really?"
"Ya, right here. She saw my dog and commented. We talked for a minute."

"So why are you back at the hospital, if I may ask?." Jack asked, curiously watching Deanne take the seat beside him.
"I have a sister who has cancer. She has kemo here."
"Oh, I'm so sorry."
"No, they say the cancer is going away. She should be fine soon. I just come here to visit her everyday. What brings you here?"
"My friend was shot."
"Oh yes, that's right, You're with the F.B.I. aren't you?" Jack nodded. "I knew I recognized you from somewhere. I've seen you on those news conferences." He nodded.
"Yup that's me." She smiled.
"You're even more handsome up close."
"Thankyou." He signed with a smile.
"Oh you sign too?"
"Sue's taught me some. I'm very rusty." She smiled.
"It took me a while too." Suddenly a doctor walked in.
"I'm sorry to interrupt but, Mr. Manning is asking for you." Jack nodded as the doctor walked away, then turned back to Deanne.
"It's very nice to meet you and I'll tell Sue I saw you." She nodded.
"Alright." He signed a quick goodbye then she did the same.
--
Jack walked into the room and glanced in seeing his friend sitting on a chair, giving several glances to the nurse.
"So just take these pills for a week and you should be right as rain." He flashed a dimpled smile and Jack could see the woman's eyes glaze over.
"Thankyou very much." Bobby said, taking the pills from her and softly rubbing his hand over hers. She nodded slightly before turning but was stopped by Jack, who asked her out to the hall.
"How is he?" He noticed how she stared at his eyes. She smiled flirtatiously.
"He'll be fine in a week if he keeps up with his medication. He'll need to come back here on Tuesday to get the stiches out." Jack nodded.
"Alright thankyou."
"Are you sure there's nothing else to help you with?" He shook his head.
"No. Thankyou." She nodded again and turned away. Jack walked into the foom.
"Well," Bobby said, adjusting himself in the chair. "I think I know why you kept getting shot and having heartattacks. The nurses aren't that bad." Jack took Bobby's coat and threw it at him.
"You ready to go?"
"Sure thing Sparky." Only instead of getting up, he picked up the clipboard to which he wrote his name on.
"Why are you writing it so slowly?"
"I want to make sure she knows."

Bobby and Jack walked slowly through the hallways to the bullpen. Bobby limped slightly and Jack couldn't help but smirk.
"Jack." Bobby stopped him before they entered the bullpen. "Do you think.. I mean what should I do about Tara?"
"What about Tara?"
"We kissed."
"Really? Congrats."
"Thanks." He leaned forward, chancing a look in then jerking back. "Now I don't know what to do."
"Just act normal, Crash. You'll be fine. Did you.. Did you do anything more then a kiss?" He shrugged.
"It was long." He smiled.
"Then you'll be fine. Just tell her you enjoyed it and.. Did you enoy it?" Bobby smiled.
"You bet." Jack chuckled as they both turned and entered the bullpen.
They stopped when they saw who else had joined their presense.
"Hey! Stan the Man!" Bobby said in a happy tone.
"Hey, Bobby." Stanley gave Bobby a strong handshake to which Bobby returned with equal strength. "How've you been keeping?"
"Oh good, good. It's just you know, getting shot."
"What?!" Everyone, excluding Jack yelped. Bobby smiled.
"Yup, someone got me right there." He pointed to the leg.
"Are you okay?" The girls all asked in unisense. Bobby nodded.
"Ya, just a few stiches."
"And don't worry. He didn't cry to hard." Jack said, earning a shoulder push from Bobby who chuckled. He glanced at Tara who's face was a mask of pain.
"Are you alright, luv?" She nodded subconsiously.

Instead of staying in the bullpen, the group decided to go out for dinner. Stanley graciously decided to buy everyone dinner at The Chicken Shack and no one refused.
"That was delicious," Tara commented as she took the final bites of her salad.
"That was only the appatizer," Stanley said with a smile.
"Well then I can only imagine how good the meal will be."
'Oh gag me with a spatula.' Bobby thought to himself as he took a bite of the garlic bread. Jack saw his friend's mood change and gave a sideways smile to which Bobby barely returned.
After everyone had ordered their main course, Sue and Jack engrossed themselves in a conversation about Sara and kids. Bobby tuned out as soon as they got to "You'd be a great mother." and "You'd be a great father." Bobby's mood had gone from bad to worse after Stanley had affectionately touched Tara's hand and left a smile on her face. He couldn't understand how a woman could change so much in a day. Last night she had been falling in his arms, being downright angry at Stanley and now, here she was playing his game. When the waitress arrived and brought their food, everyone said thankyou to her and to Stanley after they tasted the food. 'Showoff.' Bobby thought again. What was it about this man that made him so angry? He was kind and very generous but when it came to Tara, he wasn't ready to let someone else take her from him.
"You okay, Bobby?" Sue asked, seeing Bobby's distraught face.
He snapped back to reality. "Oh, ya I'm fine." He nodded with a wary smile.
She smiled back. "You sure?"
He nodded again. "Ya."
Suddenly, Stanley stood up. "Thankyo uall for coming here."
"Well, Stan, when you pay, it means I'm not." Jack said with a smile.
"Thankyou Jack. Well since you're all here, I figured that this would be the best time to tell you all that I have an announcement." Bobby glanced to Tara as if searching for any hint on her face. But hers looked as surprised as everyone elses. "I'm getting married."
