Chapter 6
Hearing a knock on the door Jack swung his legs off the bed and found his mom standing in front of him, ‘your Gran just rang………. she was wondering if you were going to visit before tonight, or tomorrow afternoon before you head home……….’
‘I’ll head over now unless you want me to help out here……….’
‘No, you go……. you know how she worries about you, she’ll only fret till she sees you………..’
Jack kissed her on the cheek and headed out, wishing once again that Sue was with him.
‘Jack, my boy……. let me look at you…….. you eating right? You look a little thin……… you need a good woman to look after you………’
His Gran pulled her strapping grandson in to her arms and hugged him tightly, ‘it’s good to see you boy…….. it’s been too long, but where’s that lovely girl of yours? Your mom said you were bringing someone………’
‘I was but Levi had an accident………. he couldn’t travel……. so it’s just me…..’ Jack shrugged casually but she wasn’t fooled.
‘You asked her out yet, boy?’
He shook his head, grinning at the directness with which his Gran spoke, painfully aware it wasn’t a trait he’d inherited ‘it’s complicated……….’
‘Complicated? How can it be complicated? You love her don’t you?’
‘Yes…………’
‘Well what the heck are you doing not asking her out?’
‘We’re not allowed to date……………. policy……… and……..’
‘You want to live with her or work with her?............. I thought so, you want to marry her, so even if one of you has to leave, that’ll be a whole heap better than working with her and standing back watching while some other man dates her……….. do you know what date is coming up boy?’
Jack wracked his brain and drew a blank, ‘nope………. Your birthday in 2 months………?.’
‘It is that but that wasn’t the one I was thinking of but if you want to give me something special for my 85th then you can visit and tell me you’re getting married………’
Eighty-five huh? That’s special, maybe we should have a party for you too Gran……….’
‘An old woman like me don’t be wanting no party……… you bring that girl up that’s all I need….. to see my favourite grandson getting married……….’
Jack chuckled as he listened to her words, still unable to believe she really was almost 85. She still drove her car, walked miles each day with her old dog and visited the ‘old people’ she’d known for years, some of whom were a good few years younger than she was.
‘I’m your only grandson……… I don’t think it counts………..’
‘Jack, I know I shouldn’t have favourites but of all my grandchildren and great grandchildren you are still my favourite……… you’re the image of your granddad and you have a good heart………. You’re a little slow in matters of that heart but a man can’t have everything……….now, what date is it in a few weeks?’
Jack shook his head in confusion and grinned as his Gran sighed loudly, ‘clueless, absolutely clueless………. !4th of February…….. St Valentines Day……. So you have a little over a month to woo Sue then you can propose on the most romantic day of the year…….. and you can bring her up to see me on my birthday……….’
‘I can’t woo her in less than two months………..’ he spluttered.
‘Course you can Jack, from what you’ve told me you’ve been wooing her since you met it’s just that neither of you have admitted to each other just what you were doing………. all you have to do is go a little further, tell her it’s a date, not a casual dinner with a friend……. buy her flowers and chocolates, little surprise gifts……… tell her you love her…………and if you don’t you’ll have no-one to blame but yourself when she ups and marries some other man…… and then when I die I’ll ask the good Lord if I can pop back and haunt you……….that’s after I’ve asked him why he made you so clueless……..’
Despite his best efforts Jack howled with laughter at the image of his Gran berating God and seeking permission to return to earth to haunt him.
‘So, you ready for coffee and cinnamon rolls then you can walk with me and Bessie here and tell me why that young girl didn’t come up with you.

Chapter 7
‘………… so I drove up, I couldn’t get a flight at such short notice and I didn’t want to miss their 40th Anniversary party….. left early yesterday, stopped overnight and arrived this morning……….. just in time for moms’ Saturday fry-up breakfast……… I’m leaving tomorrow early evening, should get back to DC late Monday night………..’
‘So why’d you invite her up if you’re not dating?’
‘Dunno…….. I guess we both needed a break, the hours we’ve been packing in have been stupid……… and I kinda thought………. nothing……’
‘You thought some time between DC and here, you might just ask her out…..?’
Jack shrugged and grinned, even hundreds of miles away his gran knew him too well, ‘it hasn’t worked so far though……..’
‘What do you mean?’
‘If one of us needs a partner for something such as a gala or fund raising thing, or even to go to the movies we hook up together……. and each time I think I’ll ask her out……. and each time I chicken out……..Esther’s right, I am clueless………’
‘What do you want most in life son?’
‘Other than world peace you mean?’
‘That’s beauty pageant contestants and we both know it’s not gonna happen this side of eternity………’
‘Marriage……… children……… someone special to love, to grow old with……… someone who loves me despite my many faults……….other than you and mom and dad……’
‘Good answer Jack, so you have a few months to do something about it….. and quit blaming yourself about the dog, it could have happened any time……… you aren’t personally responsible for everything that goes wrong in he world and I doubt Sue is blaming you….’
‘No she isn’t……. but it makes such a difference to her if Levi isn’t fit……… I can help when I’m around but it’s painful watching him hobbling around and trying to work…….. and he hasn’t worked out the whole bucket on his head things….. he walks in to the desks and looks so hurt when he bangs the bucket……..’
As they then fell in to easy chat about his job and the ‘old people’ she visited, mutual friends at the church she had attended all her life and he attended when he visited his Gran suddenly looked over to where Bessie was barking furiously.
‘Looks like trouble’ she muttered as the old black and white spaniel continued to bark.
‘Allie…………….’ he mumbled as he stared at the figure now waving at them.
‘Knew we should have taken the other track through these woods, the woman’s like a bloodhound when it comes to sniffing you out………. I was hoping she wasn’t gong to be up this weekend………’ his Gran muttered loudly.
‘Got your gun boy?’ she asked as she poked Jack in the ribs.
‘Gran, I haven’t got it and even if I did I’m supposed to shoot the bad guys, not ex-girlfriends……….you’ve been watching way too many cop shows…….’
‘Guess you’d better have my walking stick, you can beat her off with that…….’
‘We’re old friends gran, there won’t be any beating or shooting……..’ Jack chuckled as his gran waved her walking stick in Allies’ direction as Bessie continued to growl and bark.
‘MARTHA ………. could you call the dog off …….’
‘Did she just call me Martha?’ she asked scowling as Jack nodded and winced, no-one called his Gran by her first name unless she gave them permission and she had never done so for Allie.
‘JACK………. tell your gran to call the dog off……..’ she shouted, thankfully oblivious to Martha’s next words which had Jack blushing furiously.
‘The only dog here is that overdressed clothes horse……..’ turning to Allie Martha called over, ‘I’ll call the dog off when you address me with respect young woman………’
Her cheeks burning Allie reluctantly complied, ‘Mrs Hudson…… could you call the dog off please………’
‘Bessie…… here……’
Bessie bounded as fast as she could, tail wagging furiously as she jumped up at Jack and his heart broke again for Levi.
‘Jack…….. Mar………. Mrs Hudson…….. I went over to your parents…… your mom said you were visiting your gran so I figured I’d come over and see you……. I thought we could catch up this weekend………….’ She ran her fingers down his chest and abdomen as she spoke and Jack knew he was blushing furiously.
‘Young lady……… I get to see my grandson very infrequently and I’d like to make the most of the little time we have together …….. and right now I’d very much like to know all about his girlfriend, maybe you two can catch up tonight at the party………… I suppose you’ll be attending with your parents……’
‘I certainly will……. I look forward to dancing with you, Jack……… assuming your girlfriend will let you go for that long………. Your mom didn’t mention you’d bought anyone with you……..’
‘She couldn’t make it……’ Jack muttered, ‘something came up…….’
‘That’s a shame…….. still all the more time for me to spend with you………’
‘Assuming there is anything left of him by the time I’ve danced him off his feet, now if you’ll excuse us we have to finish walking the dog……’ Martha prodded Jack with her walking stick and indicated for him to start walking.
‘Jack……….. I realise we all brought you up to be considerate to others but there is a limit……… we didn’t teach you to be a doormat, particularly where she is concerned………’
‘She’s still a friend, Gran…….. an old friend and I’m not actually dating Sue……..’
‘Yet……… you want her coming back in to your life and messing things up again with you and Sue?’
As memories of his heart attack flooded his mind Jacks’ regrets knew no bounds, Allie had stormed in and he’d allowed Sue to slip away. He shook his head sadly, yelping as his gran slapped his arm, ‘good so when you return to DC you are gong to woo her right and bring her home for my birthday………’

Chapter 8
Logging on to his parents’ computer he booked tickets for a hockey game and a table at a nice restaurant which didn’t serve pizza before calling Sue, somehow he got less tongue-tied over the phone.
After catching up on news of Levi and chatting about his family but omitting the part about Allie Jack continued the conversation, ‘I booked two tickets for a game then dinner after on Saturday……… no it’s not because I’m feeling guilty……. I mean I am feeling guilty but that isn’t why I’m doing it……… I wanted to take you out somewhere special…….. to say…….. to say…… I ……. to say I’m glad we’re friends…..… great……. yeah, I’m looking forward to it too…..’
Closing the phone later he slapped himself hard unable to believe he’d wussed out again, at the rate he was going his gran would be long dead before he’d even started wooing Sue never mind the proposal and wedding she already had planned by the summer.
Slipping his tux jacket on he picked up his keys and wallet before driving over to pick his gran up for the party.
Presenting her with a bouquet of flowers Jack grinned as his gran blushed and thanked him profusely.
‘You do this for Sue and she’ll be putty in your hand…… if she isn’t already…… you look so handsome Jack, I wish David was here to see you, he’d be so proud of his grandson working for the FBI and looking so handsome too……… but I reckon I’m proud enough tonight for both of us…….. and I reckon when you and Sue get married God will let him have just a little peek outside the gates of heaven………’
‘Thanks Gran……..’ he leant down and hugged her tenderly before she quickly placed the flowers in a vase.
Jack opened the door for his gran and waited till she was safely buckled in before heading down to the church hall where the party was just kicking off.
Catching up with Sarah and Leah, his other two sisters, their husbands and his nephews and nieces as well as a number of old friends it was some time before he was cornered by Allie.
‘So Jack……… are you free to dance?’ she whispered seductively as she traced her fingers down his chest.
Swallowing hard Jack nodded silently, blushing under the furious glare his gran threw in his direction.
As Allie gripped his butt tightly Jack valiantly tried to move her hands up around his waist, praying for the song to end quickly before his niece came to the rescue.
‘Uncle Jack…… mommy says you have to dance with me ……….’
Gazing down at the earnest little face of his youngest niece, 5 year old Rachel he pulled away from Allies’ vice-like grip and picked Rachel up, swinging her around in his arms as he caught his gran winking at him.
Walking back to the table with Rachel in his arms after he’d danced her around the room while she stood on his shoes he kissed her softly, imagining him and Sue with their children at family gatherings.
‘You need to toughen up boy……’ Martha muttered as he sat down and took a sip of his beer, ‘she’ll eat you for breakfast then spit you out……’
Jack grinned as he remembered making a similar comment to Myles about Darcy,
‘Jack, just because you have a history doesn’t mean you have to spend time with her………….’
‘So……… you gonna dance with me gran? You reckon you can keep up with me huh?’
‘You wait………. we’ll see who can’t keep up with who, boy……….’
As he twirled his gran around the floor he sheepishly told her about the game and dinner, ‘I blew it gran……… she thinks I’m doing it out of guilt, not because I want to date her………’
‘Rome wasn’t built in a day lad…….. you’ve made a start……. give her a little gift and some flowers…….. she’ll get the message that you want more than friendship…….. that you love her……. got a ring picked out yet?’
‘Gran……….’ Jack grinned at her and hugged her tightly before they walked back to the table.
Standing at the mike later Jack gave a short speech on behalf of himself, his three sisters and all the grandchildren having been reluctantly pushed forward by Esther.
‘I want to begin by thanking all of you for coming tonight to share in my parents’ 40th anniversary……… in my line of work I meet people who are lousy parents, those who have been parented by lousy people, those who have been blessed to have loving and caring parents and families. Each time I offer up a prayer of thanks for the parents God has blessed me with……… parents who loved us and supported us, parents who encouraged each of us to reach for our dreams, to become the people God wanted us to be……. and I know that is something they learnt from their parents…… a number of years ago my Gran told me to reach for my dreams……. It’s a message she still sends me…….. even tonight……I could talk for hours about our parents, how much we love them, how much we owe them but it still wouldn’t be enough….. I think all I can really say is ‘thank you…….. for everything……. and we love you……’’
After hugging his parents warmly Jack presented them with tickets for a Caribbean cruise later in the year; a gift from all the family.
Returning to sit with his gran who was obviously missing her husband Jack shared his plans for wooing Sue. ‘I thought I’d take her places which had some special meaning for us………’
‘Good places I hope…….. you’re not planning on taking her to the warehouse where Levi was shot…….. or any of the places you were shot…….. or the hospital……..’
‘Gran…….. I know everyone thinks I’m pretty clueless, but I’m not that bad……’ he protested. ‘I thought about the park where we skated after Levi woke up…….. New York…….. but not the sushi bar, Sue doesn’t like raw fish…….’
‘Sounds like a plan, Jack……… there’s hope for you yet…….. now you ready for another twirl around the floor?’
Bidding a sad but warm farewell to his family Jack headed back to DC on Sunday evening, stopping over in a motel Sunday night from where he rung Sue.
