“Well if this is a celebratory breakfast, what is tonight?” she quipped. The challenging smile on her lips accelerated his heart rate.

Staring into her eyes with an intensity he did not try to hide, he answered honestly, “A date.” He smiled to himself as a soft blush of pink touched Sue’s cheeks.

This is a big step for these two and you've captured it perfectly! Flowers.gif

I enjoyed the description of Jack feeling like a nervous teenager when he picked her up for breakfast. That would seem to be a good sign. It looks to me like both Jack and Sue are both ready for the next step.

I love the nervousness they're both experiencing. It's so nice to see that they are equally "dreading" and anticipating the night's events and I can't wait to see what kind of magical first date Jack (well, you...) will come up with. smile.gif

I'm glad you all are enjoying this. Your kind replies and feedback are wonderful!

Jack glanced at his watch one last time before raising his hand to knock on Sue’s apartment door. 6:00 p.m. on the dot. He worried all day if he had made the right choice for their date tonight. He wanted it to be special. After all, it was their first “real” date. And with that first “real” date came all the emotions of a first date. It didn’t matter that they had spent countless evenings in each other’s company over the past three years. It didn’t matter that they had been on countless undercover and “non-date” dates. Each one of those times, in Jack’s mind, had been real. The only difference about tonight was that Sue would know this was real.

He watched the clock move slowly all day, fidgeting in his chair and making warped shapes out of paperclips. He silently willed the clock hands to inch forward faster than their usual sixty second pattern. He had a feeling Sue would have teased him about his eagerness to get the day over with if she had been in the Bullpen. But, she had been sequestered away in a conference room for most of the day, reviewing surveillance tapes from their latest case. When she emerged just before 4:00, Jack noticed the tiredness creeping across her eyes and smiled to himself. He knew he had made the right decision. Sue would need the respite the evening would offer. He made her leave the Bullpen at 4:30, assuring her that she deserved the bonus time off after the hours of transcription she had just put in.

He rushed out of the Bullpen not long after Sue left, eager to run by the florist and candy shop before making his way home. He had showered, shaved, put on after shave and dressed. Then, he paced his apartment until time to leave for Sue’s. Between the nervous twitching in his stomach and the pacing, he was afraid he would need another shower to wash the perspiration from his body.

There’s no going back, Hudson, he told himself as he stood outside the door, waiting for Sue or Lucy to respond to his knock. Gran would kill him if he backpedaled now. He smiled as he remembered the veiled threats to do just that if he didn’t increase his speed from his turtle pace when it came to Sue. Gran doesn’t have anything to worry about this time, he thought. I fully intend on wooing the lovely Ms. Thomas and making her mine…eventually.

He smiled broadly as he heard the doorknob turn. The smile disappeared from his face as his jaw dropped at the sight of the lovely Ms. Thomas standing before him. Once again he was struck by a sense of déjà vu. Sue stood in front of him dressed in the red sweater she had worn. The blonde tresses were swept back from her face, but she had left it down, just the way he liked it. He felt his heart hammer into overdrive as the sensations of the kiss at Callahad and Merced cascaded down his body. His lips tingled at the memory and his hands longed to touch her cheek and run through her hair. The warm smile on her lips turned his insides to a quivering mess. “Wow,” he signed, unable to find his voice.

**************
Sue blushed under his gaze. She could tell by the color in his cheeks that her carefully orchestrated outfit had its desired affect. Perhaps it was cruel to dredge up such memories, but she had made up her mind. She would no longer fight against the hope in her heart. She wanted Jack, not just as a friend, but as so much more. She finally felt as though he wanted those same things. She had not been able to hear the intensity in his voice over breakfast this morning, but she had read it in his eyes as he assured her that he thought of tonight as a “date.”

That was all the encouragement Sue needed. When she arrived home from work, she decided to let Jack know that she was ready to take the next step; to make the next commitment. She wouldn’t push. After all, she didn’t trust her judgment when it came to men. She could be mistaken in her interpretation of his words and actions. She could be patient until Jack was ready to move forward. She just intended to let him know that she was ready when he was.

Beautiful, you,” he signed as she moved to allow him to step inside the apartment.

She lowered her eyes and whispered, “Thank you. You look pretty good yourself.” His dark blue sweater and gray pants intensified the color of his eyes. She raised her eyes and noticed the lovely coral roses he held under his arm. He remembered, she thought. She had told him once that coral roses were her favorites. “Are those for me?”

She smiled as Jack handed her the roses. “Here, this is for you as well,” he said. She watched as he pulled a box of her favorite chocolates from the behind his back.

Sue’s eyes misted with tears at the kind gesture Jack offered in his gifts. It was the first time flowers or candy had been offered to her on a date. And here Jack was, offering her both. It was a token of so much more than the traditions of a first date. It was a token of how this wonderful man standing in front of her took the time to listen, really listen to her, even about something as trivial as favorite flowers and candy. “Thank you, Jack. The roses are beautiful and the chocolates will be delicious.”

“Are you ready to go?” he asked. She smiled as he offered his arm.

“What about Levi?” she asked.

She watched as Jack turned and retrieved Levi’s leash from the hook. “Levi comes with us,” he said. Bending down, he hooked Levi’s leash onto his collar and handed it to Sue. “He’s part of the package after all.”

Jack’s smile warmed Sue’s heart as she felt the hope swelling within. In that one statement, he revealed that he understood. She knew he understood how important Levi was to her. She knew he understood that if he wanted a relationship with her, he had to accept Levi. Not only did he understand, he was standing there, showing her that he accepted it all. He accepted Levi. He accepted her deafness. Most of all, he accepted her.

How about a lunchtime post?

Jack chuckled as Sue tried once more to get him to reveal their destination. “That’s for me to know and you to find out,” he teased. He smiled as she sat back and pouted against the window. He was glad the traffic was light as it gave him more opportunities to glance at the beautiful passenger whose face was silhouetted against the sunset colors of the city sky. He silently wondered how long he should wait before he told her he loved her. He had told Allie and Jessica that he loved them, but Sue was different. He only thought he knew what love was. It wasn’t until Sue Thomas entered his life that he found the true meaning of the word and the accompanying emotions.

He felt sure the first date was not the proper time to reveal his heart to the woman sitting beside him. He knew she was insecure when it came to relationships. She had been hurt one to many times to be trusting on that level. His heart contracted as he realized he had played a role in some of the most recent hurts. First Allie waltzed back into his life. Then Jessica almost succeeded in sweeping him off his feet again. That was followed by the way he brushed her off when she told him of her move to New York. He had seen the look in Sue’s eyes after each encounter and he vowed he would never be the cause of that look again. He needed to reassure her, make her feel safe in their new relationship before he revealed his heart. He wouldn’t push, but that didn’t mean he would let her know he was ready to move forward when she was.

He heard her gasp as he pulled through the gates at Gallaudet University. He had planned this carefully, calling ahead for reservations at the Kellogg Convention Center restaurant. He had even secured two tickets to the Men’s Basketball game after dinner. He wanted this night to be special. He couldn’t think of anything more special than giving Sue a first date in her world. He only hoped she would invite him in to that world.

**********
Sue waited until Jack had helped her, then Levi from the car. She waited until Jack handed the valet the keys to the car. She waited until he led her through the front door of the Convention Center. Finally, she could wait no longer to ask the question that had been burning in her brain since she saw him turn into the campus. She placed a gentle hand on his arm. “Why here, Jack?”

She felt Jack stop and turn towards her. She saw the mischievous twinkle in his eyes. “I’ve heard they have outstanding steaks, Ms. Thomas,” he replied.

She never took his eyes off his face as she felt Jack take her hands in his, intertwining their fingers. The mischievous twinkle in the brown eyes was replaced by the same intensity she was becoming familiar with. It made a tremor of joy trickle down her spine. “Because you deserve this, Sue,” he whispered. “You deserve a night in your own world. You spend so much time in my world, I wanted to give you a night in yours. I only hope you will invite me along. Will you invite me into your world, Sue?”

He dropped on of her hands and moved his to brush a wayward strand of hair behind her ear. She shivered at his touch. Her eyes misted as she watched fear edge into his intense gaze. She knew he was afraid she would deny his request. She knew he was fearful that by asking to be welcomed into her world that he was stepping across some invisible boundary that she might not want him to cross. She was determined to prove him wrong. She was determined to drive the fear from his heart. He was more than welcomed into her world, he was wanted. She allowed the feelings of her heart to show in her eyes as she whispered her response, “Always, Jack. Always.”

*******
The meal was delicious and the company was divine, Jack thought as he waited for the waitress to bring the check. His heart was bursting after she had quietly invited him into her world. It was a sign that he was on the right track. “So, Ms. Thomas,” he smiled. “Are you ready for the rest of the evening?”

“Depends on what you have planned, Agent Hudson,” she quipped.

“How about tickets to the Gallaudet Men’s basketball game?” He chuckled as a delight squeal escaped from her lips. It warmed his heart to watch her bounce slightly in the seat across from him. “I take this meets with your approval.”

“Absolutely,” she beamed.

“Well how about a final toast before we head out.” He raised his glass and waited until Sue did the same. He swallowed the sudden lump he found in his throat as he gazed into those hazel eyes that were so full of trust and compassion. She was his destiny and he was about to take another step towards their future. “To last first dates.”

He waited, trying to gage her reaction. He saw her hazel eyes widen at the declaration and misted slightly as the meaning of his words settled in. He held his breath, silently praying that he had not said too much or pushed too fast. “To last first dates, Jack.” Her smile sent his spirit soaring.

I'm glad you all enjoyed the lunch time post. Here is either a late night post or an early morning post, depending on what time zone you are in.

Much too soon for Sue’s liking, the night was at an end. She was back at her apartment, waiting to say good night to Jack at her apartment door. She wanted the night to last forever, but all good things must come to an end. However, she didn’t see this as an end. Instead, she saw it as a new beginning. It was a second chance with Jack. He seemed ready to change their relationship and she had been ready for more than two years.

To last first dates, his toast came floating into her memory as she stood at the door, staring into those dark eyes that no longer seemed able to hold his emotions at bay. She realized that he had allowed her to glimpse those emotions in the past. But she had always put it off to friendship, not daring to hope for more. Tonight, for the first time in a long time, she not only dared to hope, she dared to dream of a future with the dark haired agent who held her heart so tenderly tonight.

“Thank you, Jack,” she whispered. She allowed him to see the tears glistening in her eyes. She wanted him to have one more glimpse into her heart before the evening was over.

“Thank you for what?” he asked. She blinked back the tears as the compassion she saw in his face and the desire that made his chocolate eyes almost black took her breath away.

“For making this evening so special. For wanting Levi to join us. For giving me back my world and asking to be invited into it. For accepting me, all of me including my deafness.” Her voice caught in her throat as the tears breached the dam of her eyelids. “No one has ever given me as much as you gave me tonight Jack.”

Sue watched thru the veil of tears as Jack swallowed hard. She thought she saw the shimmer of tears in his eyes as she felt his hands cup her cheeks. His touch was tender as he gently wiped the tears from her cheeks with the pads of his thumbs. “Sue,” he started before she saw him swallow again. “I should be the one thanking you. You deserved every part of tonight and more. I’m just glad you are willing to invite me into your world. Your world is fascinating and I would love to experience it with you again. You’ve waited so patiently for me to…,” he paused as she saw a lone tear escape his eyes and travel down his cheek. “Thank you for being patient, Sue. I promise you won’t regret it.”

Sue reached up and tenderly brushed the tear from his cheek. She gasped as he turned to place a gentle kiss against her palm. His breath was warm and his lips smooth against her skin. “You’re welcome, Jack,” she whispered.

“Sue, I…uh.” For the first time that evening, Sue watched him backpedal ever so slightly. She felt sure he wanted to say more, but was stopping himself. For whatever reason, she knew he wasn’t quite ready to say what she was waiting to see on his lips. But she could be patient. She held his gaze as he slowly lowered his hands from her cheeks. “It’s getting late. I guess I’d better go. Maybe we could go out again tomorrow night.”

“Jack, I’d love to. But I promised to help with the youth program at church tomorrow night.” She saw the disappointment enter his eyes. His shoulders sagged slightly like a small child’s whose balloon had just popped. “Of course, if you’d be willing to give me a hand, we could go out afterwards.” His beaming smile made her tremble. He looked like she had just given him the gift of a life time. She smiled as she once again allowed her hopes to soar. Perhaps I have given him the gift of a lifetime. The gift of my lifetime, she thought.

“I’d love too, Sue. I uh, I guess I’ll see you tomorrow?” he said.

“Yeah, Jack. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Sue started to turn to enter her apartment when Jack caught her by the hand. She turned back gazing into his face and gasped as he leaned forward and placed a gentle kiss on her cheek. “Good night, Sue.” She watched him turn and walk down the hallway. She could swear there was an extra spring in his step as he turned the corner to head down the stairs.

She entered the apartment in a daze. Although Jack had not said anything, she was suddenly sure that he loved her. There were no doubts, no insecurities. This evening proved that Jack was her destiny. Of course, it would be nice if he would say those three magical words, she thought. But the knowledge of the unspoken feelings was enough for now.

She bent to unhook Levi’s leash. Standing up, she leaned against the door and closed her eyes, wanting to hold on to the memories of the date as long as she could. A small smile graced her face and she knew it would be there the rest of tonight and into tomorrow. Dark eyes met her when she opened her eyes once more. She startled at the sight before giggling. “Okay girl. Spill.” Lucy Dotson was home and ready for a little girl talk.
