Spring Romantic Mystery Challenge 2007
Spring marks a time of change, uncertainty and renewal. It is a time when the world alters from winter's grasp to summer's splendor. Celebrated by varied events, spring is a varied season. This year, our challenge will focus on these events, festivals, special days or celebrations.
This is a mystery challenge, so your story must include elements of a mystery: suspense, questions, clues, and of course, the answer. The mystery doesn't have to be the case, per se. The mystery could be the back story, if you will. Maybe a personal item belonging to one of the characters has gone missing and they need to figure out what happened to it (or who took it). Hmmmm, that sounds like a familiar plot line. Well, since it's been used before, you'll get to come up with a new and creative mystery of your own!
Choice of EventsMay Day
Easter Egg Hunt at the White House
The Indianapolis 500
Memorial Day
Mother's Day
National Cherry Blossom Festival
St. Patrick's Day
Earth Day
Cinco de Mayo
Spring Break (Traditionally geared around college students, families often plan events around this week.).
The stories will be judged by the readers within the following categories:
1. Best Drama
2. Best J/S Pairing
3. Best Other Pairing
4. Best Action in a Story
5. Best Use of an Event as part of your story.
6. Best Original Character
7. Best Short Story (5,000 words or less)
8. Best New Writer*
9. Best Sensual Story
10. Best Cross-over Story (STFBEye and any show(s) of your choice ie STFBEye/Bones or STFBEye/CSI/NCIS or even STFBEye/ER/24 - the combinations are only limited by your imagination! It can be a few as two shows or as many as you would like.) **New Category**
* To qualify as a New Writer, you must have no previous works on the board at the time of posting.
The Challenge opens immediately and runs through June 20 (this has been amended; please see post below this one), at midnight in your location. To enter, simply select the event you are going to use in your story and place it in your Topic Description under your title and name
An Example:
TOPIC TITLE: Destination Unknown - Starbuck
TOPIC DESCRIPTION: PG13, Spring Break
Don’t forget to include your rating (G, PG, PG13, PG17) in the description line!
You are welcome to write using any of the events that you wish – BUT you MUST complete each entry BEFORE you can begin another. And you can use each event only once. This is a longer challenge due to the fact that creating a woven plot can take time, so enjoy yourself and your readers will enjoy the story all the more!
Let the
begin!P.S. We ask that authors whose entry is a sequel please include a brief synopsis of the previous story, introducing any recurring original characters at the beginning of their challenge. That way all your readers can dive right in without feeling lost. Take a look at the first post in audiokim's Jonah's Big Day in WIP for an example.

Okay am pondering this challenge, and have a couple of questions.
First can I write AU? (I know I ask this a lot but it might be a direction I would want to take)
And second could I write a STFBE/RH crossover? strange idea I know, but just thinking about possibilites of which way to go if I decide to enter.

After asking this I will probably go a different way altogether

Rosa, we always enjoy your AU stories. I don't see a problem with your writing one for this challenge.
We are accepting crossover stories of your choice. So STFBE/RH would be fine.

Laura, since Spring ends on June 20th, and that is also when the challenge ends, I don't see anything wrong with a story about Father's Day.

Is it alright to span the story over a long distance of time, say, 9 months, designating the dates of each scene? I need to establish the background for my story
which actually starts about 8-9 months before most of it takes place. I would rather space the scenes out than to do flashbacks. Being new to this writing business
I think that would be easier for me, since I'm a numbers kind of gal and like to do things in order!
However, if you think it would be better to do it in flashbacks, that's alright too. I'll just have to adjust my thinking cap a little; you know, put it on sideways instead of normal.
Thanks.

Lynn, since you are having most of your story end up in the Spring, spanning your time line would be fine.

Quick question:
If I were to finish my story in a few weeks, could I start posting a second story just as long as it has a different plot?
Thankyou!

Tracy, yes, you can write another story in the challenge. Two things:
1. You must finish each story before you start another one. Only one active story in the challenge at a time.
2. You must use a different event for each story.

Thankyou Joy! And Event was the word I was looking for instead of Plot.
Thankyou!

Could a person do a STFBE crossover with a movie instead of a show?
Thanks,

Just a quick question... does the event have to be a big part or focus in the story or can it be sort of a background thing? I mean, can the event just be the place where the mystery happened and the rest of the story take place after? Or does the event need to be the focus of the story?
Thanks.

Christine, the event that you choose doesn't necessarily have to be the focus of your story, just part of it. As you have said, your mystery could happen at the event and then continue from there. You are, in essence, focusing on the event since that is where the action, so to speak, starts!!
I hope this helps.

Hi everyone!
The length of this challenge has been a topic of discussion among the Admin/Mod Team over the past few days. We opened this challenge in the middle of February, and the original deadline was set for the last day of Spring. But four months is a VERY long time, and we've decided we need to tighten up the timeline a bit.
Instead of the original deadline of June 20th, stories must now be completed by midnight (in your time zone) on Monday, May 28 (Memorial Day). Still plenty of time, and shortly after this one is over, we'll launch a new original challenge that is sure to inspire many entries!
Thanks for your participation and keep writing!!!
