Paul rolled over in bed looking at the clock. He knew it was to early for any logical person to get out of bed but sleep was simply not possible. Rebembering that he was to look after a friends dogs he decided to simply start the day early. His friends had left for a short holiday the previous evening to Paul knew he wouldn’t be bothering anyone by moving about. He decided to take Sue’s blackberry so that Lucy could call him if necessary.
“Hello Alyah, Ripper” Paul greeted the two dogs as he walked in the door. Alyah was a short, round mutt of a dog. Her fur was black with random brown spots along her sides. Ripper was a large Pointer mix with white fur and one black eye. Paul hooked their leashes on their necks and dragged them out the door. They were both overjoyed at the unexpected visit when they were alone in the house. Pulling hard at their leashes Paul struggled to keep up.
“Now hold up you two. I’ve got older legs than you do” Reaching a small dirt sideroad Paul unleashed the two straining animals. Ripper took off running along the supply road. His nose to the group and tail strait up in the air. Alyah on the other hand simply took off into the grasses on the side of the road. Paul progressed slowly behind them calling Ripper back occationally to keep him from getting too far ahead. Turning Paul noticed that Alyah had dropped behind him and was sniffing something earnestly.
“Alyah! Leave it!” Paul knew the dogs had a habit of finding badger nests and getting into trouble. The badgers were such strong creatures that they could do damage to even the largest of dogs. The biggest trouble came when the dogs found a nesting mama. The female badgers could take an eye out if the dog threatened her babies.
Alyah refused to leave whatever it was that she found. Finally Paul turned around and walked back to see what it was that she had found.
“What is it?” Paul asked bending down. Looking closely he saw a small silver pendant in the dirt. The dog had been trying to pick up up but because it was so flat she couldn’t get it between her teeth. Paul gasped it was Sues necklace that she had had on when she left. It was a small silver star. It had been a gift from Sues best friend Judy. Realizing the importance of it he pulled Sue’s blackberry out of his pocket.
“Lucy Dotson, Can I help you?” a tired sounding lucy answered the phone.
“Lucy, Its Dr Paul, I just was out walking a friends dogs and found Sue’s necklace. She was wearing it this morning. Im sure she must have been here since then.
“Paul are you sure? It couldn’t be someone elses?” Lucy’s voice carried a bit of an edge. Perhaps a fear to hope.
“Yes Lucy Im certain. It has an S ingraved in the back. Im sure of it. This is such an unused country lane that there can be no other explanation for it. Are those boys here in England yet?” Paul asked Lucy beginning to feel a sense of hope.
“They just landed about an hour ago. I will call them and tell them to bring scotlandyard out and start working with you there.” Lucy said “Paul you need to find somewhere secure to stay but don’t stray to far from there. I will have Jack track the signal to Sue’s blackberry and they should be there within the hour”
“Well I can’t follow a work of tracking berries but I shall stay nearby. Have him call me when he is close by. I dare say it may be a bit tricky to find” With that, Paul closed out the call with Lucy and turned to the dogs. “Well boys, I guess you get a bit longer walk that usuall. Lets explore.”
