A recipe for disaster -- that’s what this was turning out to be. With a yelp of pain he dropped the pan of burnt cookies and dived for the faucet, sighing in relief as the cold cascade of water cooled the burn streak across his fingertips. Even his oven mitts weren’t cooperating, he thought, eyeing the gaping hole in one of them.

His latest baking spree had turned into a weekend long marathon, dotted with one disaster after another. In his estimation, sugar should not look exactly like salt. Accidents were bound to happen and he was sure he wasn't the first person to put a cup of salt into a batch of cookies. And who knew there were so many kinds of sugar anyway? Demerara, yellow, dark brown, fine, confectioner’s, cane…They looked different, felt different and definitely yielded different results when added to a batch of cookie dough. And since when did roll out cookies mean flattening out with a rolling pin, not rolling the dough into a ball? Or why hadn’t his mother warned him that baking soda and baking powder were not interchangeable? And that eggs came in different sizes but recipes didn’t specify which size was called for?

Head spinning, he muttered his exasperation in unflattering terms as he turned off the tap and set about cleaning the kitchen…again. He’d done little else the past two days and he was no closer to finding the perfect recipe, and the contest was this week! Cursing the collective bad luck of the ‘bullpen boys’ as Lucy had dubbed them he took out some of his frustration on the hapless charred remains of what were supposed to be his grandmother’s never-fail hermit cookies. He’d likely have to become a hermit after this fiasco was all over.

“Eleanor Rippendorf!” Her name rolled off his tongue like the vilest of oaths and he took great delight in upending the cookie tray into the garbage. If only Eleanor could be dismissed that easily.

She had cornered their unsuspecting group at a restaurant, just as she had in previous years, catching them unawares as they wolfed down a hasty lunch without the girls for protection. Sue and Lucy had gone to Charlie’s on some errand and Tara had been at an ill-timed dental appointment, which left the men of the team vulnerable to the attack.

Eleanor had swooped in, a chilling combination of coos and trills as she launched into her latest charity project. A celebrity bake off.

“That’s great, Eleanor, but we’re not celebrities,” he had pointed out with a false sense of relief.

“You are to me, fellas,” she’d said as she batted her eyelashes and pursed her lips. He’d known a moment of blind panic when he thought she was going to lean over and kiss him but D had deftly distracted her by lamenting his unavailability due to his married status.

“This time it doesn’t matter, handsome. We’re looking for the best cooks DC has to offer from all walks of life. I’ll put you in our Community Service Worker division. All we need from you is a plate of your very own home baked cookies and the recipe, written out in your own manly script. Our discerning judges…of which I am one…(twitter)…will provide the necessary tastebuds…(she rolled her tongue and poked it out the side of her mouth along with a suggestive wink)…We’ll decide who gets into the semi-finals. The finals take place on the Fourth of July when you’ll head up a hand-picked team to bake your cookies in our outdoor ovens and the public will decide who our top twelve winners will be. They win a page in our…Hunk of the Month calendar…photo and recipe included. All proceeds go to the children’s hospital…How can you say no to that?”

A hearty round of nays had echoed through the restaurant and that was that until the call came from upstairs. In the interest of improving public relations it was deemed beneficial for certain agents to volunteer their services to a charitable cause…

He’d been baking each weekend ever since and had yet to find an edible recipe and now time was running out.

Loading the dishwasher and switching it on he surveyed the now clean and tidy kitchen before making a mug of much needed coffee and picking up the phone for what seemed the millionth time that weekend.

‘Mom?’

‘Jack honey, have you cracked it yet?’ his mom chuckled, relieved that the evening service had been lively, her sons’ pathetic attempts to bake cookies had driven her nuts all weekend but now she was flying on a high.

‘I’ve cracked eggs, cracked the mixing bowls……I think I’ve even cracked a bone in my foot from when I dropped the mixing bowl on it…….... but no I haven’t cracked the cooking…….. I need your help mom……..’

Mrs Hudson sighed, she could just see him fluttering his eyes at her as he had done almost since the day he was born, either when he needed her help or when he’d done something wrong and didn’t want to be punished.

‘Jack, we’ve gone over all this countless times…….. I’ve explained it all to you so simply Harvey could bake cookies……..’

Jack chuckled at the image of their family dog baking cookies, a large German Shepherd he was more likely to eat them than bake them.

‘I know mom but I lose something between putting the phone down and reaching the kitchen…. even my notes don’t make sense…….’

‘So what do you want me to do? Fly down to DC?’ she chuckled, ‘I’m sure the judge in my current case wouldn’t mind giving me an adjournment to bake cookies with my son…….’

‘He won’t mind, I’ll send him a letter on FBI letter-headed paper…… he’ll understand……’ Jack laughed along with her.

‘What about that nice young lady you work with? Sue?’ She suggested softly.

‘MOM!!!!!!!! I don’t want Sue to know I’m a complete klutz in the kitchen……’

‘Jack, I think she already knows, the fact that you only know how to use the microwave and the coffee maker kinda gives it away……..’

‘That’s not fair, mom……… I can use the dishwasher……. and the fridge…… and the freezer……….’ he groaned.

‘Yeah yeah’ she laughed, ‘ring her Jack, she’ll be back from church by now…… and I know she’ll be more than happy to help……. she seems like a nice young lady……. it’s about time you settled down and now Allie is happily married with a baby on the way…… you need to find someone else….. and Sue is such a lovely young woman…… and totally in love with you…….. as you are with her………’

Jack groaned, stunned at how quickly his mom had turned around the conversation from baking cookies to his love life, or lack thereof. Since Allie had disappeared to Hawaii and returned married and heavily pregnant she had finally given up on him and Allie as an item, turning her attention to his co-worker who she had met a number of times during the visits to DC.

‘Sue is a friend, there’s nothing between us, there can’t be anything…….. I’ve told you…….. in fact I tell you every time you suggest we should get together …..’

‘And I tell you son, you can’t help who you fall in love…….. you’re both crazy about each other and I say hang the rules and date…..’

‘Mom, can we get off this subject and on to the subject of my cookies……. or rather lack of cookies……….’

‘Ring her and if she won’t come over then ring me and I’ll talk you through, step by very painful step………. RING HER!’

To his frustration his mom hung up, leaving him with a lukewarm mug of coffee and a familiar ache in his heart.
Glancing at the phone he considered ringing his mom and telling her Sue wouldn’t come over before dismissing it, his mom always knew when he was lying.

Chapter 2
‘Who was that?’ Sam asked as his wife entered the kitchen and slipped her arms around him as he made coffee.

‘Jack’

‘What’s he want now?’ Sam asked turning and kissing his wife tenderly.

‘Help with the cookie bake……….how he can be a successful FBI Agent when he can’t make cookies is beyond me’ she chuckled.

‘He can’t be good at everything……… so what did you suggest?

‘I told him to ring Sue and if she can’t help I’ll talk him through it over the phone…….. I also thought maybe we could go visit over the weekend give him some moral support, maybe give them a nudge in the right direction…….’

‘Works for me’ Sam nodded before lowering his head and sending all thoughts of cookies out of Miriams’ head.

Chapter 3

Staring at the phone for almost half an hour Jack finally gave in, ‘Sue?’

‘Hi Jack’ she answered reading her screen.

‘How did you know it was me?’

‘You have a unique way of stating who you are, my mom says hello darling, my brothers say hi sis, dad says hi sweetheart…….. you just say ‘Sue?’’

‘So I guess I’m unique’ he chuckled.

‘Something like that yeah, what can I do for you?’

‘I need some help……. urgently…… can you come over? Please?’

‘Care to give me a clue?’

‘Cookies……. or rather lack of cookies……..’

‘Don’t laugh’ he protested as her laughter resounded down the phone.

‘Ok…….. but you owe me one’ she chuckled.

‘See you in 5 then’ he replied gratefully.

‘More like 20’ she giggled before hanging up.

‘Sue, you are a life saver’ he greeted her with a hug before bending to scratch Levi behind the ears.

‘I know’ she smiled entering the apartment and making her way to the kitchen.

‘Do you have anything with which to make the cookies?’ she turned to him after finding the cupboards bereft of anything suitable for cookies.

‘I did…….. on Friday night……… but most of it has gone up in flames and then in to the trash……..’

‘I see’ she nodded, her heart cartwheeling at his crestfallen face. He’d obviously tried hard all weekend to do this alone and it endeared him to her even more, he deserved a gold star for effort if not for achievement.

‘So, what are you making?’

‘I don’t know………’ he ran his hands tiredly through his hair ‘I’ve tried loads of different cookies but none of them came out right and now I don’t know what to make……..’

‘Make me a coffee then we’ll look through the book’ she suggested, taking a seat on the couch and leafing through the cook book his mom had obviously given him when he moved to DC and which, just as obviously, he had never opened.

‘I wish I’d never agreed to this now’ he muttered handing her a mug of coffee and taking the seat next to her.

Flashback

Congratulating themselves on escaping the great cookie bake off or ‘bun fight’ as Bobby had renamed it they were in a very jovial mood when they entered the pen.

Filling the girls in on the narrow escape their joy had turned to dismay when Ted walked in.

‘Guys, I have a case……. a friend of the director has been on the phone and he has decreed that this will be good publicity for the bureau……. two of you must participate in the cookie bake off……….’

Despite his usual ability to think on his feet Jack had been rendered speechless while Myles and D had both cited prior urgent family engagements which couldn’t be broken for the fourth of July and he and Bobby had been left to carry the hopes and expectations of the FBI

The girls had howled with laughter at their expense and made a number of rude comments about the rise in food poisoning over the course of the next few weeks.

‘You could always duck-out’ Sue commented as she read through the book.
‘I can’t the honour of the FBI rests on my shoulders, not to mention my own personal integrity and honour……… and my parents always said if I made a promise I had to follow through……..’

Sue gazed in to the dark brown eyes which held her captive so often and read the Jack Hudson doggedness which would never allow him to go back on a promise or let people down, especially when it came to children.

‘So what’s Bobby making?’

‘Lamingtons’ he spelled it out for her as her brow wrinkled in confusion.

‘And they are?’

‘An Aussie tradition…….. but not cookies……… he reckons that since he is being forced in to this, if they don’t like lamingtons then he won’t get past the first round…….’

‘So what are they if they aren’t cookies?’

‘Sponge cake covered in chocolate icing and desiccated coconut……… to die for apparently……’

‘Let’s hope they aren’t to die from’ she chuckled.

‘Yeah………’ he agreed, glancing at her blonde hair, aching to run his fingers through it.

‘So, of all these cookies have you anything you really want to make?’

‘No……… I thought about my moms’ cinnamon rolls but I guess they don’t count………’

‘No, but you could do something unique and different……… I have an idea…….’

‘Anything……. I’m open to all and any suggestions’ he mumbled, ‘preferably one which involves shooting Eleanor……..’

‘My great grandparents were Welsh, they handed down a couple of Welsh recipes…….. my gran made one of them all the time, Welsh cakes, they are wonderful……… the other was Lava bread, we never made it, sounds pretty disgusting……… boot up your computer Hudson……..’

‘I never knew you were from welsh stock’ he queried as he switched the computer on.

‘There are probably many things you don’t know about me Hudson…… a girl has to have some surprises…….’ she grinned at him and he melted.

‘Ok………. There we go recipe for welsh cakes’ Sue clicked on the recipe, cutting and pasting before returning to the recipe page……… or laver bread……. a Welsh delicacy I believe…….’

Jack read through the information and swallowed hard, ‘I’m not making anything out of seaweed’ he spluttered.

Laver Bread (Bara Lawr)

South Wales is well-known for its laver bread. It is made from laver, an edible seaweed and an excellent source of vitamins.
Laverbread, or bara llaw in Welsh is perhaps the most famous Welsh traditional dish. Sometimes called Welsh Caviar, it is made from local seaweed called laver. There is doubt as to why it is 'bread', and it has nothing to do with caviar either, although it is black in colour.
Laver weed, also known as red laver or tangle, is a flat type of seaweed (the same as Japanese nori) which grows on the rocks in the south west of the country. It used to be collected by locals, stored and dried in seaweed huts on the shores before being sold at market.
Before use the seaweed has to be washed in copious amounts of water to remove sand and silt, then boiled for at least 5 hours until it becomes a gelatinous mass - after further chopping or mincing, this then becomes the laver bread. It is usually mixed with oatmeal to make cakes, then fried, preferably in bacon fat
Laver bread is a good source of iron, zinc, iodine and other trace elements. It is rich in vitamins A, C and B and contains significant amounts of taurine.

Laverbread cakes

Ingredients
• 200g laverbread (8ounces)
• 200g oatmeal (8 ounces)
• Bacon fat or lard
Method
• Add the oatmeal to the laverbread, blending it until you arrive at a texture that will hold its shape (You may not need all the oatmeal).
• Shape into small cakes.
• Fry the cakes in bacon fat (otherwise lard) for 3 - 4 minutes on each side.
• Serve with bacon and eggs

‘Look on the bright side Jack, ‘if people come down with food poisoning you can blame the seaweed not your cooking……….’ she chuckled

‘I’m not that bad’ he protested lamely.

‘So that’s why I’m here is it? Because you’re not that bad?’

‘Ok, ok………. I am that bad………. I’ll go for the Welsh cakes, they look good and come with a bit of history and culture……….’ Triumphantly he printed off the recipe.

‘When’s the first round?’ Sue asked quietly.

‘Next Saturday……..’

‘Right so we shop tomorrow, we’ll make the first batch tomorrow evening then Tuesday you cook while I supervise then every night until Saturday you cook…… how’s Bobby doing?’

‘He’s ok, he likes to cook, I don’t……maybe I should mess it up so I don’t get picked for the semis………’

‘I hate to burst your bubble Jack but Eleanor will make sure you go through no matter how bad the cookies are……….’

Why?’

‘Well A she gets to spend more time with you…….. and B, from what Tara was saying the calendar is topless……….. and if she has the choice between someone like you with lousy cookies or someone like Randy with excellent cookies…….. she’s gonna pick you because you will sell the calendar and make loads of money……. Randy won’t………’

‘Topless?’ he squeaked, groaning as Sue nodded.

‘Could be worse, it could be one where they have something strategically placed to hide……… parts of your anatomy……..’ Sue blushed and swallowed hard as Jack groaned more loudly.

‘I tell you I’m going to kill Eleanor, Myles and D……… not necessarily in that order…….. does Bobby know?’

‘I think Tara told him…… I thought she’d told you…….’

Jack shook his head, ‘what makes you think I’ll sell a calendar?’

‘I’ve seen you when we all went swimming…….. you caused half the pool to faint…….. I’m surprised you and Bobby didn’t notice……. you have quite an effect on women……..’ her blush deepened as he stared at her.

‘And you?’ he asked softly.

‘The view was good’ she agreed, ‘and you weren’t so bad either’ she chuckled.

‘Okaaaaaaaay’ he grunted, ‘so what is your payment for rescuing me from a smouldering kitchen?’

‘Dinner?’ she suggested softly.

‘Dinner? How often do we do dinner?’

‘Most evenings’ she agreed, ‘ok dinner and a movie……. and a free calendar…….’

‘A free calendar? You drive a hard bargain Thomas’ he chuckled.

‘Take it or leave it Hudson……. the alternative is no cookies or burnt cookies………’

‘I’ll take it………..’ closing the computer down he suggested watching a movie, surprised when she readily agreed.

Bidding her goodnight by her car after they’d walked Levi he hugged her tightly.

‘What was that for?’ she asked softly, her heart pounding in her ears.

‘To say thank you, for coming to my rescue…….. I’ll see you in the morning….’ Reluctantly releasing her he watched until the car was out of sight before returning to his apartment where, once again his dreams were filled with the woman he loved.

Chapter 4

‘So Sparky, cooked yourself up a storm yet?’ Bobby asked as he placed a plate of lamingtons next to the coffee machine.

‘No but I have almost cooked myself in to bankruptcy over the weekend, you?’

‘Cooking up a storm’ Bobby boasted, ‘and I think Tara would agree……..’

‘Yeah? Something you want to share there Crash?’ Jack ambled over from his desk to the pile of cakes, ‘these are good’ he murmured picking up a second slice.

‘Let’s just say we had a flour fight….. and when we cleaned up the kitchen we moved on to making out……… but you have to keep it quiet…..’

‘Sure’ he nodded wondering if a flour fight might be the spur he needed to kiss Sue again, even now he could still taste her, feel her body moulded to his and her lips on his, the one kiss they’d shared wasn’t enough but there was still the rule.

‘So, what are you doing about the rule?’ he asked quietly, glancing around to ensure no-one could hear.

‘Dating without dating………. If anyone asks we’re sharing dinner as friends, going to the movies as friends…….. we’re not seeing anyone else…… you get my drift……… pretty much what you and Sue have been doing for all these years’ Bobby replied softly, chuckling as jack squirmed a little.

‘Speaking of which……… isn’t it abut time you came clean with the fair Miss Thomas, put her, you and all of us out of our misery and made an honest woman of her?’ he chuckled more loudly before yelping as Jack punched him hard on the arm.

‘Did you know this calendar was topless?’ Jack rapidly changed the subject, blushing a little as he spoke

‘Yeah, didn’t Tara tell you Sparky?’

Jack shook his head in frustration, ‘nope…….. and Sue says that however bad my cookies are Eleanor will put me through anyhow……’

‘I think she’s right, I think Eleanor is determined to get you this time…….. maybe you and Sue should pretend to be an item, put her off………..’ Bobby did his best to hide his wide grin but failed miserably.

‘Yeah, maybe’ Jack muttered, turning to the door as he heard the girls and Levi walking up the corridor chatting excitedly.

‘Hi’ he mumbled, picking up the plate of cakes as they entered, ‘coffee and cake?’ he suggested.

‘Wow, these are good Bobby……’ Sue exclaimed, ‘you’re gonna have to go some to beat this Hudson’

‘Yeah have you actually made anything which hasn’t burnt?’ D asked as he too entered the pen.

‘I have……. They didn’t burn but they were inedible………. for a number of reasons…… none of which I’m prepared to share right here….. we still on for tonight?’

He smiled as Sue nodded and smiled at him.

‘Did you know Tara and Bobby were dating?’ he asked as they ambled round the store that evening.

Sue nodded, a mix of joy and sadness flowing through her. Tara had filled them in over breakfast that morning and while she had been happy for Tara who had now joined Lucy in the ‘happily dating’ group it had only made her ache more for that relationship with Jack.

‘Maybe when you teach Jack to make cookies you could make turtle shaped cookies, tell him he is a turtle……… then you could make cheetah shaped cookies and tell him that’s what you want from him……’ Luce had suggested, ‘or kiss shaped cookies, or a heart shaped cookie……….

Su had tried to explain the depth of their friendship but failed miserably to convince her friends just as she had been unable to convince herself that friends was all they were and all they ever would be. She wanted more but he never gave any sign of wanting anything more.

Despite her protestations Tara and Luce had filled her in on the discussions the team had had when they thought she was gong to leave for New York and she had almost choked when she realised Myles, once her fiercest critic, had been the one to voice his thoughts on their relationship.

‘He’s a changed man Sue……. I wouldn’t be dating him if he wasn’t…..’ Luce murmured.

‘Ok Hudson, that’s everything……. Let’s hit the kitchen’ she announced as they wheeled the trolley to the checkout.

‘Let’s get dinner first……… Chinese or pizza?’

‘Indian?’ she suggested with a grin, ‘anything other than pizza….. or sushi.’

‘Works for me…..’ he nodded.

‘So, how is Allie?’ Sue asked as they ate in companionable silence watching a movie.

‘Seems to be doing well, she’s the size of a house…… well that’s what she tells my mom anyway…….’

‘Size of a house?’ Sue raised her eyes in confusion.

‘Pregnant……. big….. twins’ Jack mumbled between mouthfuls of food.

‘I didn’t know……..’

‘Didn’t I tell you? She got married a while ago and now they’re expecting…..’

‘I hadn’t realised…….. didn’t you attend the wedding?’

Jack shook his head and cleared his mouth, ‘no-one did……. they got hitched in Hawaii, went back to Wisconsin pregnant……. according to Allies’ mom who told my mom, she got fed up of waiting for me so she went out and married the next best thing……. he plays professional football apparently…..’

‘I hadn’t realised she was waiting for you’

Jack shrugged casually, ‘neither did I…….. she would have had a very long wait, Allie and I aren’t marriage material…….. the only person who didn’t realise that was Allie…….. and her mom…… and my mom for a while but she knows now we would never have worked out…….. I thought I’d told you……. sorry…….. it obviously had a great impact on my life…….’

‘Obviously’ she whispered, relieved that the woman who had once had his heart was out of the picture.
