Part 9
Cindy’s close family arrived just after ten and Jack and Sue spoke with them in the conference room. Mr and Mrs Bailey were in their mid sixties an attractive couple who were dressed smart, but casually. Gavin their son who was in his forties and greying at the temples, smartly dressed in a suit had accompanied them. The three of them were distraught over the news of their daughter and sister.
“She was such a free spirit” Mrs Bailey said, wiping her eyes again “We had out differences, she believed different things to us”
“My mother means that she had a number of relationships, the most permanent of them was perhaps a year” Gavin informed them.
“But she was our daughter and we loved her” said Mr Bailey.
“When was the last time you saw your daughter, sister?” asked Jack gently.
“We hadn’t seen her since Easter” Mr Bailey confesses “She came over for dinner on the Sunday”
“I saw her a couple of weeks ago” Gavin added “She did some work for a friend of mine and was dropping it off”
“So you’re weren’t close?” asked Jack again, wincing at the question.
“Not as I would have liked to be” Mrs Bailey replied.
“Do you know of anyone who would have wanted to hurt Cindy?” asked Sue.
Mr Bailey shrugged and replied “No, she got on with most people she knew and met, she hadn’t had a regular boyfriend for some time as far as we were aware”
“If she had problems with the business she would always pick up the phone and give me a call” Gavin added.
“Can you tell us why she was in the DC area this weekend?” Sue continued.
“Yes” all three answered together but it was Mrs Bailey who continued “It was her annual visit with two friends she met when she was a young teenager. They meet the same place, same time every summer, or have done for a number of years”
“Can you tell us the names and addresses of her friends and where she stayed?” asked Jack.
“Yes” said Gavin “We can”

Tara and Myles arrived at the small resort a little after noon that day. An elderly man sat in reception.
“Good afternoon” he said a pleasant smile upon his face “How may I help you? Are you looking to rent a chalet?”
“No” said Tara with a smile.
“FBI” announced Myles showing his badge “We would like to ask you a few questions”
“Certainly whatever I can do to help your good folk do your job better” he added with a wink at Tara and reminded her of her grandfather.
“We understand that at the weekend a Cindy Bailey, a Madeline Cox and a Lorna Parker rented a chalet”
“That’s right, been coming here for a decade”
“Can you tell us anything you thought was perhaps suspicious?” prompted Tara.
“Not particularly, they keep themselves to themselves, never had any bother with them. Has one of the done something?”
“One of them is dead, murdered”
“Oh” said Cyril, visibly distressed and sat back down on his stool with a thump.
“Can you think of anything” Tara asked one last time.
“On their last morning there was a delivery for Ms Bailey”
“What sort of delivery?”
“Brown package delivery, they never usually get parcels, but I took it down to them”
“Did you see what was inside?”
“No that was personal”
“I assume you cleaned the room where did any trash go?”
“The trash can. Tell you what go round and take a look if you like”
“One more thing” asked Tara “Who delivered the parcel?”
“A young man”
“Can you be more descriptive?” asked Myles.
“I am not much good with ages, he could have been anything from eighteen to thirty, average height, build with brown hair nothing usual or striking. He just told me there was a delivery and that was it”
“Do you have close circuit television?”
“No, no need here, never had any trouble before”
“Thank you for your time” Tara said with a smile “We’ll just look through your trash and we will be on our way”
Myles and Tara rifled through the large trash can for forty minutes before Myles triumphantly held up part of the packaging with the name and address printed on the side.
“This is better than nothing” Tara said.
“Let’s hope we get a stronger lead soon” Myles responded as they looked gravely at each other and placed the brown paper securely in a clear plastic bag.
