I can't believe that I'm starting this, but I couldn't resist. I had a story that just wouldn't go away. Hope you all enjoy!

Final golden rays of the setting sun, laced with hues of pink and purple, peeked through the window. He spared it only a glance, knowing instinctively that he didn’t have much time. The plan had been set in motion months earlier, every minute detail painstakingly deliberated and carried out with absolute precision. There was no room for error.

He turned to survey the ingredients that had been carefully laid out for assembly. Though he’d committed them to memory months ago, he kept his notes close at hand. An error at this juncture could ruin everything.

The slight tremor in his hand betrayed his inner tension. Odd, really. He was committed to this course of action… had chosen it, had looked forward to this night, to what would happen as the events of his plan unfolded. He had no intention of turning back.

It was time. Taking a deep breath he reached for the first item and carefully began to measure . . .

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
M & M’s lined the row in front of Tara William’s keyboard. Arranged by color – three blue, four red, two yellow, six brown, and three green – she popped a brown candy-coated chocolate into her mouth. She didn’t know why there were always more brown candies, and she needed to even out the numbers. She continued to plunk at the keys trying to finish the report from their last case.
Without warning, Bobby perched on the corner of her desk and snagged a green M & M before she could stop him.
“No! Not a green one!” she shrieked.
“Luv, don’t worry. I’m immune to effects of green M & M’s.”
She slugged his arm. “I am not concerned about the effects of green M & M’s on your libido, Bobby Manning. Now, I’ve got to eat three brown ones to even the colors up. I can’t have six browns and only two greens.”
“No, we certainly couldn’t have that.” The Aussie chuckled, grabbed three browns from her neat row, and gobbled them in one bite. “There now. All better.”
Tara rolled her eyes. “Is there a reason you’re sitting on my desk?”
“Yep.”
“Care to share?”
His dimples deepened and his eyes twinkled mischievously. He plucked a candy and popped it Tara’s mouth. “Well, besides wanting to see the effects that green M & M’s have on you, luv, Jack just called and wants us to meet Myles, Sue, and him. We’ve got a new case. It looks like number three literally bit the dust.”
Even though she knew he was simply teasing her, Tara felt her cheeks burn. She cleared her throat. “Where?”
“An apartment in Gaithersburg. I’ve got the address here.” He waved the paper. “If you let me have the rest of the M & M’s, I’ll drive.”
She scooped them into her hand and grinned at him. “What makes you think I want you to drive?”
Chapter 1
“The coroner really thinks this is number three, huh?” Tara asked, leaning over the lifeless body on the bed.
“That’s why the police called us. She fits with the other two.” Jack flipped open his notebook. “Champagne Reynolds, age 26 - A culinary arts student at L’ Academie de Cuisine here in Gaithersburg.”
“I don’t know what they’re cooking at that school but I don’t think I want any,” Myles quipped.
The coroner’s team brought in the body bag and Jack stepped out of the room. The others followed. “I want a forensics team to turn this place upside down. Tara, she’s got a laptop on the kitchen table. After they dust it, I want you to work your magic on it. Bobby, I want you and Myles to talk to the neighbors and see if they know anything. D is already on his way to the L’ Academie. Sue and I will take her address book and start talking to her friends.” He turned to Sue who was holding the flower covered book in her hands. “Family?”
“Haven’t found any numbers or emergency contacts.”
“Maybe D will have better luck. She probably had to list them on something when she enrolled,” Tara offered.
Sue passed him a list of phone numbers. “These are 20 numbers on her caller I.D. I thought it would be a good place to start. We can cross reference them with the address book.”
“Perfect. Tara, we’ll call you with any that we can’t cross reference. I don’t have to tell you all what we could have on hands here. The coroner still can’t find the cause of death on the first two victims. Keep your eyes and ears open. It’s going to be a long day, people. Stay in touch.”
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Jack pressed his hand to the small of Sue’s back sending an undeniable current through her skin. “What was the last number she called?”
“It was to a number not in the book, but the second to the last was to an Amanda Tanner. She doesn’t live too far from here.”
Jack opened the car door and Levi hopped in the back while Sue slipped in the front seat. While Jack climbed in the driver’s seat and started the engine, Sue used her Blackberry to relay the first number to Tara.
Jack noticed she didn’t say anything for several minutes. He touched her thigh. “Anything wrong?”
“You mean besides a young woman who’s been apparently murdered?”
“Yeah, besides that.”
“We could be going to tell this Amanda Tanner that her best friend is dead. It’s hard not imagine being in her place.”
“Sue, Lucy is visiting her family. She’s not attending cooking classes. She’s fine.”
“I know, but I wasn’t thinking about if someone told me something had happened to her.”
“Then who? Your parents?”
“No – you.”
He pulled the car into an empty parking space and put it in gear. He squeezed her hand. “Nothing is going to happen to any of us.”
After showing her their identification, Amanda Tanner let Jack, Sue, and Levi into her apartment. A pile of cookbooks sat on the coffee table. Sue noticed the top one was open to delicious-looking pan of cinnamon rolls. Her stomach growled and she realized she’d skipped breakfast --- again. Without Lucy around to remind her, she honestly just forgot to eat the most important “meal of the day.” Jack smiled knowingly at her as she sat down beside Jack on the worn sofa.
“Can I get you anything? Coffee? Soda?” Amanda offered.
Sue smiled warmly. “No, thank you. Why don’t you sit down so we can talk?”
The attractive red-head sunk into an overstuffed chair like a deflated balloon. “What’s this about? Something bad has happened, hasn’t it? I can tell by the expressions on your faces.”
Jack swallowed hard. “Do you know Champagne Reynolds?”
Amanda nodded. “She’s my closest friend at the college. What’s happened? Is she in some kind of trouble?”
“When did you last speak to her?”
“Last night around 9:00. She’s had the flu. She was sick on Sunday, then she was better by Tuesday, and then had this relapse yesterday. I was worried about her.” The truth suddenly dawned on the young woman. She shriveled further into the chair. “Oh no,” she breathed. “Please . . . please don’t tell me she’s gone.”
Sue took her hand. “We’re so sorry.”
She shook her head in shock. “I don’t understand. She just had the flu. How could this happen?”
“The coroner doesn’t think it was just the flu.”
“She was murdered like those other girls from the school?”
“We don’t know anything yet,” Sue explained.
“She’s really dead?” Tears sprung to Amanda’s eyes, and Jack passed her a box of tissues from the table. He waited until she regained some composure before he spoke. “We understand this is a difficult time for you, but can you possibly answer a few more questions for us?”
Amanda cleared her throat. “I’ll try.”
Sue smiled. “Good. Did Champagne have any family we should notify?”
“Her parents are dead. She has two sisters – Chablis and Chardonnay.”
Jack wrote the names down. “Chablis and Chardonnay?”
“Her mom was an alcoholic. Champagne hated her name.”
“Do you know where her sisters are?” Sue asked.
She shook her head. “No. Champagne hadn’t heard from them in years.”
She hugged herself, and Jack knew she was struggling to hold it together. “Did she have any enemies? Was she having problems with anyone at school or any neighbors?”
“No, everyone loved her Champagne. She was outgoing and fun to be around.”
Sue looked around the apartment and spotted a photo of the two of them with another man between them. She stood and went over to the photo. She picked it up. “You can see how close the two of you were. Who is this with you?”
“Jason Elliot. He goes to L’Academie with us.”
“Was Champagne seeing him or anyone else?” Jack asked.
“She didn’t have a regular boyfriend. She went on dates about once a week. Lots of guys asked her out.”
“Do you know their names?”
“A few. First names mostly.”
“Can you make us a list of any you remember?” Amanda nodded and Jack stood up.
Sue handed the student her card. “If you think of anything you think we need to know or if you just need to talk, my number is on the card. Can we call someone for you so you’re not alone?”
“No, I’ll call Jason.”
Jack’s eyes darkened further. “Amanda, we have to ask you not to do that. We’ll have to talk to him first.”
“You don’t understand. He’ll be devastated. He loved her, but he hasn’t told her. He’s been too afraid to do anything about it.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, he did everything he could to be with her – unnecessary study sessions, partnering with her on projects, walking her dog. He even took up sailing because she liked it. I’ve been trying to get him to make a move for the last year. He was afraid if something went wrong, it would destroy their friendship.” Fresh tears trailed down her cheek. “He’ll never get the chance now to find out if she felt the same way.”
Chapter 2
“Sparky, old boy, I believe you’ve lost your touch. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you scratch on shot that easy to make.” Bobby swung his pool cue around expertly, sunk the last ball, and grinned cockily. Jack didn’t even seem to notice. Righting the stick, he leaned on it’s end. “Okay, out with it. It’s no fun to gloat if you don’t notice.”
“What?”
“Something is on your mind. That’s the only time you play this badly.”
“I don’t want to talk about it, Crash.”
“Is it the case?”
“Do you speak English?”
He took a swig from his mug after sitting down on a stool at their table. “According to Myles, it’s debatable. The higher ups giving you grief?”
“No.”
“Money troubles? Car problems? Family?”
“No, no, and no.”
“Aw, you’re making this too easy. If it isn’t any of that, then it has to be a sheila, and the only sheila you seem to notice anymore is one pretty little analyst.”
Jack sighed and selected a chip from the basket. “The case just hit a little close to home.”
“I wondered about that. That poor drongo Jason didn’t even get the chance to tell the sheila how he felt. We know what was holding him back. What’s stopping you?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then, maybe it’s time you found out, mate.” He dunked a chip into the salsa. “And maybe you’d better do it before she decides she’d like a man in her life besides Levi the Wonder Dog. I don’t think she’ll have any trouble attracting one. Do you?”
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Punching his pillow into submission, Jack tried to find a comfortable position. The neon numbers on the alarm park glared their 3:00 A.M. message accusingly. He flopped onto his back and released an exasperated breath.
As much as he hated to admit it, Bobby had a point. Sue may be growing tired of waiting for him. After all, he’d pretty much declared his feelings for her when he thought she was leaving for New York, and now, three months later, he’d still done nothing about it. ”What’s stopping you?” Bobby’s question echoed.
“What’s stopping me -- is me,” he answered aloud into the night. Finally giving up on sleep, he climbed out of bed and went into the kitchen. He suddenly remembered what his mother did when she couldn’t sleep. She made cinnamon rolls. She said kneading the dough was therapeutic. Maybe he should try it. He had her recipe. Sue had eyed that photo in the cookbook on the girl’s table yesterday. He could surprise her with breakfast.
But he had one problem.
He’d never made cinnamon rolls in his life.
After a quick trip to the all night market, he set the ingredients out on the counter. He stepped back and stared at them, feeling more than a little unsure of how to proceed. “Think, Hudson,” he told himself. “This is a step by step process.” He read the recipe over again.
“Okay, Mom, here goes nothing.”
An hour and half later, he flopped on couch while he waited for the rolls to rise. They weren’t shaped perfectly and some were larger than others, but they still looked enough like cinnamon rolls that he thought they’d pass. If they didn’t, he’d just eat them himself. Flour encrusted his tee-shirt and hockey emblazoned sleep pants, but he didn’t care. He could catch a nap while they rose and then pop them in the oven. They’d be done in time to surprise Sue with breakfast in the park.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
He awoke with a start, hearing the faint, relentless beep of his alarm from his bedroom. Jack stumbled through the living room and banged his shin on the coffee table. Once the offensive device had been silenced, he went into the kitchen to check on the roll. They’d risen – a lot. Huge mountains of cinnamon rolls cascading over the edge of the pan. Something did not appear to be right. Jack turned on the oven and slipped the mounded dough into the oven. Even if they weren’t pretty, he figured they’d taste great. After setting the timer, he set off for the shower. With any luck, he and the rolls would be ready at the same time.
The lack of sleep made him move more slowly than usual. He stayed in the shower, letting the water cascade over his body and praying for a boost of energy. Finally, he turned off the water and wrapped a towel around his waist. He grabbed a second towel, roughed up his wet hair, and draped the towel around his neck. He stopped suddenly and sniffed the air. Something was burning.
Clutching the towel about his waist, he ran through his apartment and ripped open the oven door. Smoke billowed out, the smoke alarm blared, and Jack coughed and sputtered. He yanked the towel from his neck to use as a pot holder. Steam immediately formed in the wet towel. “Owww!” he screeched, dropping the pan of cinnamon rolls into the sink with a clatter. Using his unburned hand, Jack pulled off the cover of the smoke alarm and ripped out the battery.
A ceiling fan helped dispense the smoke while he wrapped his hand in ice. Blisters had already started to form on his fingertips. Jack surveyed his cinnamon rolls. Only the edges that hung over the pan had burned. Certain they were salvageable, he set them on the counter and cut off the charred edges with a serrated knife. “There. That’s not so bad. A little frosting and no one will even notice.”
When he heard the knock on the door, he figured that the smoke alarm had awakened Francis, his noisy neighbor. He didn’t bother to check the peephole and swung the door wide.
Sue’s eyes met his, coursed over his chest, then dropped to the towel around his waist – all in a matter of seconds. Her face flushed, and she quickly closed her eyes. “I’m sorry. I thought you’d be ready by now.”
Jack stood in his doorway, hand clutching the towel, unsure of what to do. With her eyes closed, she couldn’t see him speak. He couldn’t leave her standing in the hall and he didn’t care to wait there until she opened her eyes. He finally took hold of her arm and tugged her inside. Chuckling, he led her to the couch and pressed her down into it.
She kept her eyes firmly closed. “Jack, is something burning?”
He took her hand and held it to his cheek so she could feel him nod no.
“I’ll just wait here while you get dressed.”
He nodded again, but he was certain she could feel the grin on his face. She smiled, too. He caught her peeking as he reached the doorway to his bedroom. He couldn’t resist shooting her a wink. Her cheeks flamed afresh. After he’d entered his bedroom, he heard her say loudly, “Jack Hudson, what am I going to do with you?”
He chuckled. “Well, I can think of a few things, Miss Thomas.”
Chapter 3
When she was certain he’d had enough time to close the bedroom door, Sue opened her eyes. Something may not be burning now, but she was certain something had recently. She followed the scent wafting from the kitchen and found the source of the stench in the sink. Clearly, Jack had cut away the charred edges of -- well, something, and then slathered thick icing on top to cover up the evidence. Sue chuckled and swiped a finger full of frosting.
He touched her shoulder and she jumped. “SORRY,” he signed, running his fist in circle over his chest, where his shirt was not yet completely buttoned. “I didn’t mean to startle you. I see you found my cinnamon rolls. I wanted to surprise you with breakfast in the park this morning. I saw you ogling that picture of them yesterday.”
“What did you say?”
“Ogling.” He said again as he finger-spelled the word. “You know, ogle, to look or to stare.” He followed her line of sight to his chest and grinned. Tipping her chin up, he added, “Or eye flirtatiously.”
Did he realize what he was doing to her? Between the woodsy scent of his cologne, the slightly damp, tousled hair, the unbuttoned shirt and the death-by-chocolate eyes, she could scarcely form a coherent thought. She bit her lip. “The frosting is good,” she finally managed.
He stepped back and laughed. “What brought you here so early anyway?”
“Actually, Levi wanted to take you out to buy some cinnamon rolls for the office.”
He rubbed the golden’s head. “Thanks, Levi. You’re always thinking of me, but now we won’t have to go buy any. We’ll just take these.” He washed his hands in the sink and dried them on a kitchen towel.
“Jack, thank you for the gesture. It’s very sweet of you to go to all this work, so don’t get me wrong, but are they . . . a . . . edible?” She giggled at the shocked expression on his face.
Laughing, he tossed the towel at her. Sue caught it mid-air and snapped him with the tail of it. “Remember, I have brothers.”
“Oh, so you want to play that game.” He pulled a second towel off the counter, and rolled it into a “rat tail”.
“Don’t you dare hit me with that!” she warned, backing against the wall.
“You started it. Remember, I have two sisters. Rat tails are my specialty.” He snapped the towel in the air. “I can’t believe you asked if they are edible. I’ll have you know this is my mother’s recipe.”
“But she wasn’t the one baking them.” She laughed infectiously.
“For that you have to take the first bite.” He discarded the towel and tore off the least charred piece. It oozed with icing. He approached her slowly.
“Did I tell you I’ve just developed diabetes?” she teased.
Another step.
“That much sugar could send me into a coma.”
He held it to her lips. “Open up or wear it. It’s your choice.”
“The latter may be safer.”
He pulled her to him in one swift motion and she opened her mouth in shock. He plopped the morsel in and touched her nose with frosting still clinging to his blistered finger.
She chewed the bite, then dramatically brought her hand to her throat and feigned choking.
“That is soooo not funny.”
She swallowed. “Then, why are you laughing?”
“Aren’t you the little ingrate this morning? I even burned my finger for you.” He held up the offending finger.
Compassion immediately flooded her face. “Oh, I’m sorry.” Taking his hand in hers, she examined the finger and kissed it. “There. All better.”
He fought the urge to tell him he’d burnt his lips, too, but wasn't how he wanted their first real kiss to be. “So, what did you really think about the cinnamon rolls?”
“They’re good.”
“Honest.”
“Jack, don’t push it.”
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
“I tell you, he’ll eat anything,” Jack insisted, stepping off the elevator with Sue. “Bobby will have them gone before Myles even gets one.”
“I just don’t want you to be disappointed.”
“Or ridiculed.”
“There is that.”
He held the door for her. “I can take a little razzing.”
Myles turned as they entered. “Well, well, well. Our illustrious leader is a tad late this morning. However, we might excuse him as he appears to come bearing gifts of the culinary kind.”
“You brought treats, Sparky?”
“Cinnamon rolls. Still warm. My mom’s recipe.”
Myles lifted the corner of the foil covering them. “Jack, the smoke alarm is not a timer.”
Bobby elbowed him out of the way. “They can’t be that bad.” He attempted to tear one away from the others, but it held fast.
Tara appeared beside him with a knife. “Let’s try this.” She pushed the knife into the indention, but it wouldn’t sink beyond the mounds of frosting.
“Let me try, luv.” Using more strength, he managed to saw his way through. He scraped away the frosting with the knife, revealing the darkened tops of the rolls. Bobby whooped with laughter. “Ole Sparky strikes again. Did you make these over an open flame or what?”
Jack jerked the knife from his friend. “They’re just a little overdone.” He cut through the other side and took a bite. His teeth jarred, and the room convulsed with laughter.
“Maybe Levi would like one, “ Sue offered, taking it from Jack. She set it in Levi’s dish, and the dog crunched it happily. “See, he likes it.”
“Don’t get me started on the things Levi is willing to put in his mouth,” Myles quipped.
D walked in the room and spotted them around the treats. “Oh, who made these?”
“Jack, and unless you have a death wish, I suggest you pass,” Sue said with a giggle.
“Thank you, Benedict Thomas. Okay, fun-at-Jack’s-expense time is over.” He replaced the foil on the pan. “Don’t we have some murders to solve?” He stepped up to the white board, and the group managed to reign in their laughter. “Tara, tell us what you found out about Champagne?”
“One sister is in California and the other in Texas. The authorities were still trying to notify them. She’s been a student at L’Academie de Cuisine for a year. Good student, too. I’ve got her phone records now. No numbers are the same as those of our other two victims.”
“What do we know about them? Can anyone see any patterns?” He glanced at the board and saw the names and photos posted: a brunette named Helen Christianson and a dark haired woman named Connie Kiyosaki.
“None of them look a bit alike,” Bobby admitted. “The first victim was married and the second was engaged. Champagne wasn’t even seeing anyone that we know of.”
Sue leaned against her desk. “Other than all being students at the L’Academie, they had nothing in common.”
“Did they take the same classes?”
Tara checked her notes. “No, they were all at different stages.”
“Well, it looks like one of us will be headed to cooking school. Sparky, you apparently could use the help.”
Jack smiled along with the rest of them. “Actually, I think we all need to go.”
Bobby nearly choked on his coffee. “Listen, mate, my idea of cooking is buttering toast.”
Myles cleared his throat. “This is one assignment for which I am well suited although I may be overqualified.”
Bobby clapped him on the back. “There, let’s let Mr. Humble do it.”
D stepped to the center of the room. “Jack’s right. You all need to go undercover. I spoke to the school’s president, and he’s anxious to get to the bottom of this. He has students who want to drop out already.”
“Can you blame them?” Sue asked.
“No, I can’t. So, since the victims were all enrolled in different programs, we’ll put you all in them as well. Myles can go in the advanced classes. Bobby and Tara, we’ll put you in the beginner’s courses, and Jack and Sue, can go in the couples classes. That should cover all our bases.”
Tara tapped her fluffy pen on the desk. “Except we don’t know who or what we’re looking for.”
“Still no cause of death?”
“Poison of some sort. Dr. Cirulis is just having a hard time figuring it out.”
“Tell Gracie Cirulis it only takes an hour on television to get a cause of death,” Bobby joked.
“And she’ll tell you it only takes an hour to solve a crime, too,” Myles added.
“Bobby, call her and use your charm. Maybe you can speed her up. Tara, can you arrange the undercover classes? Myles, can you get us the supplies and books we’ll need to start. Sue, something bothering you?”
“What about Amanda and Jason? They’ll recognize you and me from our interview.”
D nodded. “They would have, but the director has given them two weeks off to deal with Champagne’s death.”
Myles rubbed his palms together. “Well, then, let’s get cooking.”
A collective moan filled the room, and Jack shook his head. "This could be a very long case."
LOL the banter between Jack and Sue was priceless! Their conversation in this post was as easy as their conversations were on the show - awesome job adulation smilie.gif
That was wonderful. I could just see Jack and Sue at his apartment and then with the whole team. Couples class, now that could be interesting!
“SORRY,” he signed, running his fist in circle over his chest, where his shirt was not yet completely buttoned.
Did he realize what he was doing to her? Between the woodsy scent of his cologne, the slightly damp, tousled hair, the unbuttoned shirt and the death-by-chocolate eyes, she could scarcely form a coherent thought.
I'm not even there and I'm having trouble coming up with a coherent thought!
“Did I tell you I’ve just developed diabetes?” she teased.
Another step.
“That much sugar could send me into a coma.”
He held it to her lips. “Open up or wear it. It’s your choice.”
“The latter may be safer.”
He pulled her to him in one swift motion..
I think I stopped breathing right there.
“I can’t believe you asked if they are edible. I’ll have you know this is my mother’s recipe.”
“But she wasn’t the one baking them.” She laughed infectiously.
That is so Sue! rofl.gif
Oreo, I'm in heaven!! This is just wonderful already!! I just caught up and there are so many things to quote, I'm just going to have to say brilliant!!!
This is like watching an episode!! I can see all the bantering between Bobby and Tara, Jack and Sue and the team!! I can also see them giving Sparky a bad time about his baking!! You had me rolling on the floor with Myles' "Jack, the smoke alarm is not a timer"!!!
It looks like things are heating up with Jack and Sue very nicely!! Not to mention the puddle I'm in due to Jack-in-the-shower, Jack-in-a-towel, Jack-in-an-open-shirt........!!!
Your case sounds very interesting and myterious!! It sounds as if it is not going to be an easy case to solve - more excitement and intrigue for us!! I can't wait!!!
Jack and Sue, can go in the couples classes.
Interesting choice, wondered why he paired those two together? whistling.gif This is so much fun, Oreo, I keep forgetting we're investigating something as serious as a murder.
