Chapter 6

She took a deep breath and considered her next move, she could either continue to tease him as she had when they were married or she could make something up or she could use the weekend to find out if he had any feelings for her. Lucy had remained firm on the theory that he was crazy about her but Sue hadn’t seen anything to suggest that was true. He was always a perfect gentleman when they were together, his hand only ever rested in the small of her back unless she was upset about something when he would hug her and run his hands over her back to comfort her. If she were honest his gentlemanly behaviour drove her nuts at times, even a goodnight kiss on the cheek after dinner or the movies would be good.
Most nights she replayed their one and only kiss and ached to experience another which wasn’t ‘a response to a situation’.

In the end she opted for telling him what she liked about him and offered up a prayer that it wouldn’t blow up in her face, now Tara and Lucy were dating if it weren’t for Jack she would be on her own most evenings and weekends.

‘Ok, your eyes, I think I mentioned that once before……’ she chuckled slightly as she remembered the look on his face that day in the pen.

‘You did’ he agreed amiably, ‘I always wanted green eyes…..’

‘Why?’ Sue asked softly.

‘Sounds lame but I felt boring, brown hair, brown eyes…….’

‘You don’t want green eyes, brown eyes are like chocolate’ Sue told him firmly.

And?’ he asked after a few minutes of silence, ‘is that it? My eyes?’

‘No……. you have this cute, quirky smile, an adorable wink, together they could melt the polar ice cap…. I love it when you laugh….. you have a warm, generous heart, you’re the first guy who has treated me as an equal, someone to care about rather than someone to be pitied or cured. You see my deafness as a positive rather than a handicap, because of you I have a great job and more friends than I’ve ever had…. I love your efforts to become a part of my world even though I know you don’t find it easy to learn….. when I’m with you I feel safe and protected, I feel as though nothing can hurt me. I love your knight in shining armour mentality, the way you always come to my rescue but you never blast me the way you could when I’ve put myself in danger…… I love the way you’ve accepted Levi as part of the package……. I love you…… your…you… the way you listen to each member of the team…. Your loyalty to your friends…your compassion and desire to protect the innocent…... actually I pretty much love everything about you even if you do drive me a little nuts at time when you get over-protective……. Jack, why have we stopped?’

I think I know why Jack stopped the car

This is going to get very interesting very quickly I can't wait to see what comes next, but my predicition is a whole lot of !!!!!!!

Chapter 7

Sue looked around and realised that he had pulled off the road and stopped by a diner.

‘I need to clear my head and stretch my legs…….’ he switched off the engine and released Levi from the car before opening her door.

‘Did you mean it?’ he asked softly as she stepped from the car.

‘Mean what?’ she bit her lip, hoping he’d missed her slip-up.

‘In the middle of all that, and I’m very flattered that you think so much of me you said… ‘I love you’ did you mean it?’

‘Ummm……. errrr…..’ her brain refused to function as she saw the passion swirling in his eyes which were now almost black, she wanted to scream at him that she loved him but in the recesses of her mind lurked the fear that if it didn’t work she would lose him as a friend and that was more than she could bear.

She felt his hand caress her cheek before he cupped her chin and tipped her head up so she could read his lips then before she knew it he’d brushed her cheek with his lips before softly kissing the other.
Her legs turned to jelly as he cupped her cheeks with both hands and brushed her lips with his before rocking back a little as though gauging her response.

‘I hope you did because I love you Sue……’ he gave her no time to respond before his lips were on hers but this time it was no mere brush of skin, this time he increased the pressure as he pulled her roughly towards him, slipping one arm around her waist while the other cupped the back of her head, holding her tightly to him.

If she’d wanted to run she wouldn’t have been able to, clamped tightly to him, her legs like jelly she moaned in to the kiss, responding with equal fervour as her arms wrapped around his shoulders and held him as close as humanly possible.

As her curves were crushed into his muscular torso he lost control of the kiss and increased the pressure further, groaning with longing as she responded eagerly, nipping at his lower lip. Whimpering with desire and a little surprised that she was taking the lead Jack willingly parted his lips, almost melting as her tongue ran over his teeth before reaching in to the furthest recesses of his mouth to dance and explore.

Recovering quickly he began his own tentative exploration of her mouth, pressing himself even closer until she was supported only by the car door as 4 years of aching need were expressed more eloquently than their stumbling words ever could.

‘I take it that’s a yes?’ he grinned as they reluctantly parted to drag air in to their aching lungs.

‘Definitely a yes’ she whimpered, flushing as she noticed the other cars present and the people in the diner who were watching the firework display.

‘That’s good, because I love you too sweetheart….. I should have told you years ago… but I plan on making it up to you,’ any thoughts she might have been about to put in to words slipped away when he winked and her and smiled the cute, quirky smile she loved so much.

Taking her hand and calling Levi he walked them away from the car park to a small bench, ‘we need to talk…… and away from people watching…..’

While Levi played happily Jack pulled her close and dipped his head to kiss her, his kisses was possessive and demanding yet wonderfully gentle and soothing at the same time and Sue shuffled closer, desperate to be as close to him as possible. Yanking his t-shirt out from his jeans she ran her hands over the sensitive skin covering his chiselled chest, moaning in to the kisses as the skin trembled at her touch.

‘I thought we were talking Hudson?’ she teased as they parted for air and Jack tenderly smoothed the hair he had just mussed up.

‘Talking is very over-rated’ he grinned, ‘and we can talk in the car, but we can’t kiss in the car……. I love you Sue…’

‘I know, I love you too….’ she smiled, ‘one good thing, we don’t have to pretend to be dating now…..’

‘That’s true, I was wondering how I was going to hug you and kiss you as your pretend boyfriend when I wanted to be doing so as your real boyfriend’ Jack kissed her once more softly on the lips before taking her hand, ‘we need to head out or your parents will be sending out a search party for us.’

Holding hands they reluctantly walked back to the car.

OMG OMG. did they?? no... really? I can't believe it. i'm so happy. Yay, for jack. Things are looking great now. Too bad the team isn't spying on them. I beat they would have liked what happened.
Now i can't wait to see how this HS Reunion goes.

I have the feeling that this reunion is going to be very interesting. The best part is that Jack is going to be there with her for this time. I am sure even Lucy would agree.

Chapter 8

Settling back in the driver’s seat after manoeuvring the car onto the highway Jack took Sue’s hand in his and rested it on his thigh, caressing the knuckles with his thumb and smiling at her soft moans. No words were needed for some time as they travelled in companionable silence, the car easily eating up the miles to Sue’s home town.

Checking his watch Jack grinned, they were running later than he’d anticipated but it didn’t matter, all that mattered for now was that he and Sue had finally admitted their feelings and were now officially a couple. Silently he wondered when was too soon to propose.

‘HUNGRY?’ he signed, grinning as Sue rolled her eyes, some days she was convinced he was a growing teenager the amount he ate.

‘I could eat, there’s a very nice restaurant just up here…. my treat…….’

‘I’m paying, count it as our first date……’

‘So we had the first kiss before the first date?’ she grinned.

‘You complaining Thomas?’ he teased.

Sue bit her lip and tried to keep the smile off her face, ‘no complaints as long as we skip the kiss on the cheek……’

He almost choked as he looked out for the restaurant, he liked this side of Sue, a little flirty and bolder than he thought possible, ‘no kisses on the cheek I promise. I told you you’d fall for me when I kissed you……’

‘I fell for you long before our first kiss, Hudson’

‘Yeah? Care to enlighten me?’ he asked softly.

Remember when I chased the terrorist and he got hit by the bus and killed?’ she asked softly.

‘Yeah?’

‘I’d had strong feelings for you for a while but I think that was when I knew……in the midst of everything and after I’d made yet another mistake you took time out to check I was ok, to listen to me and you didn’t judge me or tell me I’d messed up…… I knew then that I was falling head over heels in love with you…….. you were the reason I didn’t go to New York….. and the reason David and I split, he wanted a commitment I couldn’t give because I didn’t love him as totally as I loved you………’

‘That’s it’ Sue squealed a few minutes later after she’d directed Jack to the restaurant.

‘Looks nice’ he whispered as he took her hand and assisted her put of the car before wrapping his arm around her shoulder as they walked to the restaurant, Levi padding happily alongside.

‘I’m sorry, you can’t bring the dog in here……’ Jack glared at the waiter who was barring their way.

‘Sue’s deaf, Levi is her hearing dog, he is allowed anywhere……’ he flashed the FBI ID he carried in his jacket pocket as Sue fished out her ID, politely thanking the waiter as he moved aside to allow them to enter.

‘We’ll have a quiet table at the back please’ Jack stated firmly, slipping his arm around her waist, now he had her he didn’t want to let her go…. ever.

‘Do you get that often?’ he asked softly as they waited for their food to arrive.

Sue shrugged, ‘sometimes, but I tend to go to the same places where people know us so it’s not so bad…. but thank you for coming to my rescue…. again….. I hope you don’t get fed up of it…..’

Jack chuckled and caressed both her hands with his thumbs, ‘I love riding to your rescue, it never gets old and it never will…. I consider it my responsibility to ride to your rescue at any time of the day or night, particularly now we’re an item…..’

‘Mom will be pleased……..she thought you were a nice young man the first time she met you’ Sue chuckled.

‘Yeah?’ he blushed, ‘she has good taste just like her daughter…..’

‘Jack Hudson, don’t be so vain……’ she tapped him lightly on the nose, her heart pounding as he grabbed her hand and kissed it gently.

‘Do you think your mom will have a problem with me staying now we’re together?’

‘Don’t see why, it’s not like we’ll be sneaking around…….’ her trust in him sent his heart soaring.

‘No sneaking around sweetheart……. but I will stay in a motel if your mom wants me to……’

Reading his lips and the depth of love in his eyes Sue fell in love with him again.

‘You ok?’ he asked quietly as she sighed softly.

‘Yeah, just wondering how I got to be so blessed to have you not only as a great friend but as my boyfriend too.’

‘I’m the one who’s blessed’ he murmured tenderly wiping away the tears which spilled out of her eyes and down her cheeks. ‘Sue, if this is all going too quickly we can slow things down, start by just holding hands and sharing a kiss on the cheek……’

‘No, I don’t want to slow it down Jack, I’m a little scared that I’ll wake up and find this has all been a wonderful dream, I’ve had so many wonderful dreams about dating you….’

‘And I plan on making everyone of them come true.’ he murmured huskily, wondering when he would tell her his dreams had gone way beyond dating.

As they ate they talked about those she could remember from school, ‘there’s Mike, he was the guy that came to the pen that day….. we spoke a few times on the phone but there was a limit to what we could talk about… I still see Michelle, not often because she wants to spend time with Ken…. thankfully I haven’t seen Raymond or Sharon since the wedding….. most of them I doubt I’ll remember, it’s not like we spent much time together at school, or out of it…’

‘So, what did you do out of school?’

‘A lot of my time was spent catching up with what I missed in lessons, because mom insisted I went to a normal school I didn’t have any help so I had to catch up on what I missed in class and do the homework. On top of learning to play the piano and keeping up with my practice I didn’t have much free time and when I did I had no-one to spend it with…. people don’t ordinarily want to hang out with those they view as freaks….’

‘So what does that say about me?’ he grinned, ‘not that I think you’re a freak but I do like hanging out with you……’

‘It says that you are a very special man Jack Hudson…….’

‘So, your dreams, did they ever include us feeding each other with dessert?’ he asked as the waiter arrived with the double chocolate sundaes they’d ordered.

‘What would you say if I said yes?’ she asked shyly. Having never dreamed about David even when they were dating Sue wasn’t too sure how much of her dreams she could reveal to him.

‘I’d say, I had the same dreams, except mine usually involved that fantastic dessert you made when we were married…….. ‘

Initially shy but empowered by the love she saw in his eyes Sue picked up the spoon and offered Jack a mouthful of whipped cream chocolate ice cream and chocolate sprinkles.

‘I’ll make the dessert one night for you, you can come over for dinner…… but it won’t be pizza or Chinese’ she teased.

Exiting the restaurant later than they’d intended and walking Levi Jack grinned as Sue sighed and pulled out her blackberry, ‘hi mom……. yeah, we’re on our way, just running a little late……. we stopped off for dinner and got talking…..’ she slapped Jack who was biting back a cheeky grin as he signed ‘MAKING OUT’.

‘No about 45 minutes……. sure, we’d love a mug of hot chocolate when we get there……. love you too……. yeah I think he is looking forward to the weekend……. bye mom…’

Cuddling in to Jack they walked the few yards to the car before Jack pulled her in to his arms and reduced her to an incoherent puddle with his kiss.
Moving apart for air she wondered how he could possibly think she might want to slow things down.

Sighing as she buckled up her seat belt Sue contemplated whether she could propose if it appeared Jack was going to drag his heels as long as he had before asking her out.

YES, everything is going well i can't wait to find out what happens next. I'm also sure sue's mom is fine with him staying with them. He might has to sleep on the couch but i'm sure that's alright.

That was so sweet! I feel bad for Sue because when she was a teenager no one could see what a truly wonderful person she was except Judy. I'm glad she no has a bunch of friends on her side.

Chapter 9

‘Sue, before we go any further….’ Jack turned to face her, ‘I want you to know how sorry I am that I didn’t go to the wedding with you….. I’ve always regretted not taking you. Lucy told me about the jerk… and….. and…… well I’ve beaten myself up ever since for not cancelling my plans immediately to go with you…..’

‘Jack, that’s so sweet, did Allie mind you rebooking your plans after you’d cancelled?’

‘I didn’t rebook them……I haven’t spoken to Allie since, she was screaming at me down the phone when I cancelled…. I took the coward’s way out and didn’t tell her I could see her……’ the edges of his eyes crinkled as he grinned sheepishly.

‘So Lucy told you about that night huh?’

‘Yeah, she filled me in…….. after she’d told me I was an idiot for not taking you…. I had to agree with her, which was why I cancelled Allie…. you never said how it went with David……’

‘No I didn’t……. it went, I kept myself busy keeping the book, David chatted with people…….. I feigned a headache and we left……’

‘He wasn’t very supportive?’

‘He didn’t know much ASL and he didn’t always let me know who was talking so it got difficult to follow the conversations, not that anyone seemed too concerned about talking to me…… so I did what I always do and tuned out….. Lucy told me that the best way to show them what I’d achieved was to have a good job, a great boyfriend and look fabulous…….. I had the job and I thought I looked good but the boyfriend was lacking…….. not this time though….. ‘

‘Thank you, I’ll do my best……..’ he grinned, ‘Sue…… I was thinking…. since we’ve been dating for a year….. I would probably have proposed by now…… and we’d be thinking about getting married in a year or so…..’ he reached down to the glove box and pulled out a small box, ‘would you wear this?’

‘Where did you get this?’ she asked slipping the ring on her finger as tears pricked her eyes, he’d obviously given the weekend a great deal of thought and she wondered if he had any idea how much she wanted to wear his ring, not simply for an undercover.

‘Picked it up from the bureau…. it looks great Sue…… so we tell people we’re engaged? That I popped the question on the way up?’

‘Yeah’ she whispered, kissing him softly before turning her attention back to the windscreen, ‘we should go Jack…..’

‘Sure…….’ he rested his hand over hers as they headed towards her old home.

‘Sue……..’ her parents squealed their greetings as Jack unloaded the car and released Levi from the backseat.

‘Jack, good to meet you again’ Mr Thomas extended his hand, grinning as Jack tried to juggle all the bags, dropping one on his foot as he tried to respond to him.

‘Good to meet you too sir…..’ he hurriedly picked up the case grinning as Levi greeted the older man excitedly.

‘Call me Steve….. here give me a bag….’ Jack handed him one while Sue and her mom continued to talk excitedly.

‘We’ll leave the women to it, I’ll show you to your rooms….. I can’t tell you how pleased we are that you’ve done this for Sue……’

‘It was .. is a pleasure …… she’s an incredible person and if her class mates are too stupid to realise it then they are the ones who are missing out…… Sue said you wanted to play golf tomorrow?’

‘If you have nothing else planned….. I’d like to get to know you better….. Sue always speaks well of you when we talk……’

‘I’m a little rusty, we used to play once a month but the guys have been otherwise occupied …… and Sue isn’t a lover of golf…..’

‘I know, I tried to encourage her but she remains resolute…..’ Steve grinned.

Jack blushed a little as he left Sue’s bags on her bed and glanced briefly around the room before following Steve along the landing, ‘this will be your room, bathroom is next door….. I noticed Sue is wearing an engagement ring, is this part of the undercover or is there something you want to tell me?’

‘It’s a part of the weekend but Sue and I are now dating……’

‘Since when?’ Steve wrinkled his brow in confusion, ‘Sue didn’t mention it last night when she rang…….’

Omitting the bit about the kisses Jack explained how they came to be an item, groaning as Steve slapped him on the shoulder, ‘it’s about time, Elaine and I were wondering if you’d ever get together……. I’m happy to have you here and I know I don’t need to warn you about treating her right…..’

‘No sir, you don’t…. I won’t ever hurt her……’

‘You will Jack, even when you don’t mean to…. I love Elaine so much it hurts sometimes but there are times when she drives me nuts and I drive her nuts and we say things in the heat of the moment or I forget something important…. you’re fallen and imperfect like the rest of us. I know you won’t ever deliberately hurt her and that’s all I want but when you mess up just tell her you’re sorry and put things right. You ever hear the saying ‘love never means never having to say you’re sorry’?

Jack nodded quietly wondering where Steve was going.

‘They got it wrong Jack, love means telling the people you love you’re sorry when you mess up and trying your best not to mess up again….. Sue will drive you crazy at times and when she does and tells you she’s sorry for hurting you, you do the only thing you can, you forgive her and tell her you love her……’

‘I will sir, I love her so much it hurts at times……’

‘I know, so why’d you wait so long?’

‘Because I was scared……. not of Sue but of losing her friendship… and…..’

‘And? The older man prompted.

‘I wasn’t sure she’d want me….. I struggle with ASL and I know I will never be as fluent as I want, I mess it up so often…..’

‘We all do……. when Sue was diagnosed we had our lives turned upside down, Elaine was possessed, she wanted to give Sue every opportunity to live in the real world, we had her learn to sign, speak and read lips…… it wasn’t easy. Elaine and the boys learned ASL with her, I didn’t have so much time, you know how it is when you have to work to support the family. I guess we had it a little easier, we were learning at her pace, the easy stuff first but I never quite got my head around signing words in a different order to the way we spoke…. I kinda use key words rather than pure ASL but Sue understands. My point is that you’ve been thrown in the deep end, you’ve had to learn a whole new language as well as teaching Sue a new job and keeping her safe. The important thing to remember is that you’re not doing this because you have to, and I know from what Sue has said that some of your team mates have only learned a minimal amount and have shown no desire to learn more. You’re doing this because you want to, because you love Sue and Sue knows you want to and now she knows you love her and she appreciates your efforts……. Elaine and I were wondering when you two might finally get together…… she’s mentioned you in every phone call, letter and email since she met you, we’ve prayed for you when you had your heart attack, when you’ve been shot, or hurt emotionally, offered up prayers of thanks when you’ve rescued her from the bad guys and rejoiced when cases have been cracked… she doesn’t tell us much but if she has the opportunity she rings before a raid, asks us to pray for protection for you guys….. we always offer up an extra prayer for you… her mom and I worry about her going out on the streets as part of the team, Elaine would prefer for her to be safe in the office but we know you’ll keep her safe…… Jack I want you to know how much we value what you’ve done for Sue, not only the job but being a friend, seeing past her deafness to the wonderful person her mom and I have always known her to be…maybe you’ll never know just what that means to us….’

Hearing Elaine calling them they ambled downstairs, Jack glowing on the inside as he realised her parents would be happy to have him as a son-in-law, her dad’s words touching his soul as he mentally rebuked himself for wasting so much time.

‘Jack, wonderful to see you again’ he was hauled in for a warm hug by her mom as Sue grinned at the pained look on his face, guessing he wasn’t comfortable with her action.

‘So if we see any of Sue’s old school friends we tell them you’re engaged? Tell them you proposed on the drive over? Elaine asked softly, wondering if he might make Sue’s dreams come true and propose for real soon.

‘Yeah’ Jack nodded, slipping his arm around Sue’s shoulder as they cuddled together on the couch.

‘Not that I expect anyone will ask’ Sue commented.

‘And if they don’t then they are the ones who lose out and I get to have you to myself all night……..’ ignoring the presence of her parents Jack kissed Sue tenderly on the cheek noticing her fingering the engagement ring. ‘One day soon you’ll have my ring on that finger not some cheap bureau issue ring’ he thought to himself.

‘You want to walk Levi then we can turn in?’ Jack suggested, stifling a yawn.

‘Looks as though your mom and dad have turned in already’ Jack commented as they returned to the house after a long walk. Long in time that is, the distance covered hadn’t been great and Levi had spent a good deal of time chasing around on his own in search of an annoying squirrel which refused to be caught while Jack felt the need to kiss her senseless at every given opportunity.

‘Maybe we should go up too, it’s going to be a long day…. we have to set out early if you’re gonna have a game of golf with dad…’

‘So, do I get to kiss you goodnight at your door? Since this is the end of our first date…..’ the grin gave him a cute boyish look and Sue felt her heart cartwheel in her chest.

‘I guess that depends on how you’re planning on kissing me goodnight…… if it’s going to be a chaste kiss on the cheek then that will be ok…… however if you’re planning on a reply of the kisses on the walk, I don’t think it’s a good idea, I don’t think I want my mom hearing me moaning and whimpering…….’

‘That’s decided it, I’ll kiss you goodnight down here….’ he grinned, winking at her as he snuggled closer and lowered his head.

An hour later they staggered up stairs, both somewhat rumpled and breathless, ‘I’ll see you in the morning’ he whispered kissing her softly on the cheek before ruffling Levi on the head and entering his room.

Jack will propose sometime soon we can only hope!

That was great thinking to include time with Sue's parents. Staying with her parents was logical since a school reunion would be in her home town. That was a most productive talk Jack had with her dad.
