Hold On My Heart
He took in the smell of the flowers that he held tightly in his hand, they smelled of her – that lavendery scent penetrated his nostrils and he smiled at the memories it brought to life. He had so many memories with her, they didn’t all have to begin with her – they would find their way to her in the end anyway.
He placed the bouquet onto the fresh, moist grass. He sighed and cast his eyes towards the skies.
Hold on my heart. ´Cause she´s looking over my shoulder. He knew that even God had taken her away from him – she would always stay close to him. He could feel her presence around him always. He carried her with him, in his heart – but also in their children, in their memories.
A lone tear trickled through his lashes, down onto his tanned skin – caressing his cheek like once her hands did. He wished it was her hand right now. She could always comfort him with just a single, simple yet so meaningful touch. They had something he could not put into words. But now, it was all gone. He didn’t have her touch anymore. He just had memories, beautiful memories – but those weren’t concrete. He couldn’t wrap his arms around those memories. He couldn’t kiss those memories, though he would always cherish them.
‘Cause there never has been a time, that I wanted something more
He needed her back with him. The idea, that he took so long to get her appalled him right now. It horrified him. It was unfair, totally uncalled for! Why did she have to be taken from him? They had gotten into such a late start, why couldn’t it have been lasting?! It should have been. He needed her.
His heart ached. Again. He was sure it would never stop. He was sure he would never want it to stop. He couldn’t bear the thought that he might forget about her. He could not. He would not.
I’ll keep a place for you, somewhere deep inside. And he would. She would never leave his heart. He wouldn’t let her. He told his heart to hold on. “Just Hold on, my heart. Hold on.”
Because one day, they would be reunited again. He believed that. He believed it so much – it hurt. The salty taste of tears reached his lips and he closed his eyes, envisioning that she would kiss his tears away, she would kiss the pain away. He felt himself warm up inside. A smile formed. She could always cheer him up.
His thoughts were interrupted by a soft tug at his pants. He opened his eyes slowly and looked down into a pair of beautiful hazel eyes.
“Daddy?”
“Yes sweetheart?”
“Mommy’s not far, daddy.”
“I know sweetheart,” he squatted down and looked at his daughter. Their little girl. He raked his hands through her dark brown hair. “But thank you for reminding me.”
She held her hand at chest level, her palm directed at her chest – as she signed “You’re Welcome”.
She wiped his tears away – she gave him a kiss and a great big hug. He held her tight, he looked past her to see the elder two kids. “Sam, Susan – come here.” He motioned for them to join the hug and they did.
He smiled. He knew she was close as he directed his gaze up to the heavens. “Thank you.” He mouthed. Both for Him and for his wife. He was sure they would understand.
“Come on, let’s go.” He put his arm around his kids as they started walking towards the car.
Hold on my heart, just hold on to that feeling.
