Midge sat on a corner of Nick's desk, primly eating her lunch, nibbling on a carrot as she stared at him.
"Midge... what should I do then about Bobby and Tara?" He asked, studying the carrot she was eating. "Gone healthy I see?"
Midge raised a brow at him. "You could stand to eat a little healthier." She said, eyeing his waistline. "Just because you need to be fat and jolly doesn't mean you have to do it year round." She offered him a carrot stick.
Nick took it from her and bit into it, his eyes widening as he chewed. "Midge... these are marzipan..." He said slowly, swallowing it.
"And your point is?" She asked.
"You complain about the cookies but yet your lunch of healthy "rabbit" food is nothing more than almond paste."
"Protein." Midge countered.
"And sugar." Nick said, putting Tara's letter down again. "Just because something looks healthy doesn't mean it is." He said, watching as Midge took her fork and started to eat her salad. He looked at the salad. "And that's fondant. With sprinkles and marizpan chicken chunks."
"The dried cranberries are real." Midge said calmly. "And the dressing is white chocolate." She said, a sugar haze starting to cloud her eyes. "You know..." She said as she swallowed a bite of her 'salad'. "You need to read the letters." She insisted. "You've still got four members of that team to read."
"But how are we supposed to grant them what they want?" Nick scratched his head. "I'm starting to think that we're going to need an assistant."
Midge frowned, her sugar haze evaporating as she stared at him. "But... but... you have me..." She spluttered.
"Oh no, dearest Midgikins." Nick said, with a fond look. "I have you... I need you... here with me. I was thinking we might need to recruit a human to help. The question would be whom to recruit."
"Has to be someone on the nice list for minimum five years." Midge said, remembering the bullet point in the Elven handbook for outside contractors. "And it has to be a very mild... barely bad reason that they were ever on the naughty list if they have been on it."
"Hmm..." Nick nodded. "Maybe Smidge or Wisp could be pulling our possibilities?" He suggested.
Midge nodded and abandoned her lunch for a moment while she slipped off Nick's desk to go give out the assignment.
"Those elves." Nick smiled. They were always unusually happy and energetic this time of year. Midge's 'healthy' meal was starting to shed a lot of light into the why and how his elf staff maintained their energy. He ate a cookie before starting to read the next letter.

Dear Santa...
It's been quite a while, my friend.
And I'm not sure where I fall on your lists anymore.
The last time... I was on the nice list, must surely have been that Christmas when I was eight. In case I've never said it... Thank You for that train set. It meant the world to me.
Over time though, my disillusions and general disenchantment with this world... well, they've clouded my viewpoint.
How in the world do you remain so jolly and full of goodwill towards all - across the world?
Sometimes, I fear that my views are too cynical... too contradictory to those of my teammates and I worry about alienating them.
My relationship with my family is wobbly at best... so my team is the only family I can really count on. Although Anne and I have repaired our relationship and we are slowly progressing to a mutually satisfactory siblingship.
That is not to say that ALL of my relationships are doing that well.
I fear that I have done Lucy the most grievous of wrongs. I'm not sure that we can ever be more than adversaries with our wit's drawn and sharpened to a point that is sharper than any blade.
Words really are a two bladed sword, aren't they?
No matter my position on the list... nice... or as I am more likely to suspect, naughty... All I want is for Lucy to be happy. I'm not proud of my actions... nor do I deserve her foregiveness. But she, brilliant and beautiful woman that she is... she deserves to be happy.
Please.
Respectfully yours,
Myles Leland III

"Myles Leland the third."
At the way that Nick said his name, Midge's head popped up. "What about him, boss?"
Nick raised an eyebrow at the tremor that appeared in her voice. "What do you know about him?" He countered.
Her blue eyes widened and she stared at him. "Me?" She squeeked.
"Yes, Midge." Nick's eyes narrowed at her. "You... you know something about everyone."
She shook her head, Nick nodded. "He's... he's beyond naughty." She whispered.
"Not the..." Nick's eyes widened in shock.
Midge nodded slowly. "Yes, the 'Don't Believe' list." She said sadly.
"Oh." Nick said quietly. "Then why do I need to heed his request?"
Midge studied him, her lips pursed as she considered the best way to answer him. "Because... because if you gave him what he asked for this year then maybe he'd start to believe again." She finally said. "I mean... you don't really owe Myles. He's right, you know? The last year he was on the nice list was when he was eight and you really delivered. He's finally remembered to thank you, which says to me that he definitely remembers."
"And he's being nice to his sister again." Nick mused. "I suppose that I should read the last three letters before I decide just what to do with his letter."
"One of the things that we'd considered had been to simply re-distribute the letters amongst the team and to let them make their own wishes come true." Midge admitted. "But you know as well as I do that the elves can't make the decision to give the letters back... to different people."
Nick nodded, taking another cookie as he picked up another letter. "That could work... I'll finish reading and then we can have a brainstorming meeting." He said, turning his eyes to the letter in his hand.

Dear Santa...
Hey! It's been a long time.
I still remember that great pair of skates I got when I was nine. And you're absolutely sure that it wasn't those cinnamon rolls I left you that year that got me the hockey stick when I was ten?
Mom sure does make good cinnamon rolls, right Santa?
Needless to say, hockey didn't end up being the right place for me.
I think I've found the job I was born for. I love working for the FBI. This team of friends... no... family... that I work with, well... they're just as important to me as my sisters. I think of them all as my brothers and sisters.
Well...
Except for one.
There is NO way that I could ever think of Sue Thomas as a sister again. Ever.
Oh sure, it's easy when she's dating someone like David or those few dates with Scott. But Capono? Eww... he made my skin crawl...
Erm... that's not a bad thing, is it?
Santa...
Over the last few years, I've fallen head over heels in love with that woman.
And I'm the worst when it comes to love and expressing how I feel. Every single time I manage to work up the courage to ask her out or make a move... a piece of my past rears it's ever so ugly head and I'm unable to keep it from getting out and hurting her.
Again.
How much can I put her through? I've asked myself that so many times.
Rhonda... Allie... Diana... Kristin... Jessica...
Each name... each relationship has surfaced at a very bad time.
How do I fix it?
How can I make sure that I let her know that I care for her... very deeply care for her. So much that I love her.
There's no one else for me. There's been no one else.
Only Sue.
Just Sue.
Santa... if you've got a spare Christmas miracle up your sleeve, I sure could use it.
Mistletoe alone won't do it, I don't think.
Help me win the girl of my dreams for good, please?
I'll see what I can do about the cinnamon rolls.

Santa glanced at Midge. "You can't be serious...?"
Midge merely smiled and told him to read it again.
Nick studied her for a moment before re-reading the letter. "I remember him." He mused, stroking his beard. "But how do I owe him? We've always gotten along and he's always been on the nice list. So he's always gotten what he asked for."
Midge rolled her eyes. "Exactly." She snickered. "He got what he wanted though, for cinnamon rolls... not because of where he fell on the nice list."
"Are you accusing me of unfairly gifting him?"
Midge smirked and turned her back, telling Smidge and Wisp what they needed help with now.
Nick scowled and read the letter again, slowly as he munched on a cookie. "It was never unfair..." He muttered. "And when it comes to Sue Thomas... he's clearly a little slow."
He heard a noise that sounded suspiciously like 'Turtle' coming from Midge as she scrambled back up on his desk. "So... cinnamon rolls aside...?"
Midge nodded. "Maggie's are better anyway." She told him primly as she finished her lunch.
"Oh, I don't know..." Nick shrugged. "Ellie Anne Hudson makes some mighty fine cinnamon rolls." Midge rolled her eyes. "But maybe we should keep that between you and I." He said, hastily... having never considered what his beautiful wife would think about the comparison.
Midge smiled indulgently at him. "Perhaps we should." She raised a brow at him and then nodded at the remaining letters.
"Right... right." Nick sighed. "Two more letters." He said as he picked one up.

Dear Santa...
You know, I'm not sure that you'll be able to help. But I'm willing to let you if you want to.
I mean, surely you have people who can help, right? Your wife or someone?
I wouldn't mind it so much if they'd just acknowledge how much they're attracted to each other. If you could just see them, it's sooooo obvious!
And they're... they're completely OBLIVIOUS!
You really don't have to work for the FBI to see it.
Although, you do have to work there to witness it on a daily basis.
He's too noble... too slow...
And she's... Sue's just too everything perfect and right for him.
She likes him. I know she does. I've heard her at night, talking to Levi when she thinks I'm asleep. I'd even venture a guess that she loves him.
But heaven help him if he backs away from her again without attempting a move.
I really don't think I need to give you full details... more deniability for you if I don't.
But let's just say it would probably put me permanently on the naughty list.
All I want for Christmas...
Well, wait.
Maybe I shouldn't wish for that.
So... instead...
I'll make a wish for myself again.
All I want for Christmas is a guy who will look at me, the way that Jack looks at Sue. Or how Bobby looks at Tara when he thinks no one is watching.
Please Santa? for me?
Much Love,

"Probably something about Jack and Sue." Midge said. "She's been asking for that for the last two years."
"Ah..." Nick nodded. "So... where are we going to find someone for Lucy?"
"I have no idea." Midge shrugged. "You might still need to consult with Cupid for that one. He might have an ida."
"Perhaps." Nick smiled. "Or... if we go with the re-distribution idea, then maybe one of the others would have someone to introduce her to."
"Oh, I like that idea!" Midge nodded enthusiastically. "That would be a very good idea." She glanced pointedly at the last letter.

Another great tidbit here! I love the humorous detail in this story, Mione. Just awesome! I guess I’d better quit quoting or I’ll never finish catching up! And now, we get to be privy to Midge’s comments all the time since she is going to plant herself in Nick’s office to keep him on the straight and narrow path! We need a reverse one of these for all us gals who keep our bosses out of trouble!
Ah, but there is a down side to Midge being there with Santa…I was hoping for a little more progressing intimate moments between Nick and Maggie, but with Midge there, I reckon that won’t happen!

Dear Santa…
It’s been a very long time.
But I’ve always appreciated your way to make sure that I could just be that normal girl… the one with the three annoying brothers. The one that has her dolls stolen so that they can go under some science experiment. I also… in spite of my Mother… always enjoyed the Trixie Belden books that you would give me. Mother hated those books. She said that it encouraged an unhealthy attraction to law enforcement.
However… I don’t think I would have been as inspired to join the FBI if it wasn’t for Trixie and her friends. I feel like I have my own set of friends much like the book when I look around the office. So maybe Myles isn’t exactly the poor little rich girl of the manor… but he does lend that self sufficient air to our group. Deep down, I think he likes being part of the group as much as I do.
For the record… I never did believe my brothers when they told me that you didn’t exist. I hold steadfastly to that belief, that you and your magic exist. I wouldn’t be writing this letter if I didn’t.
Oh, Levi wants me to thank you for that bone he got last year and he wanted me to tell you that he doesn’t mind if you give him the same thing again.
Oh Santa… I don’t know what to do. I turned down a promotion to stay here.
But my secret reason for staying… has turned out to be just that. A secret reason for staying. If only I knew how Jack felt about me…
Has he always been this stubborn?
This guarded? Did he ever freely just write you a letter and tell you what he wanted or did he always qualify it by offering you a secondary gift choice? Because I feel like there’s a second offer that I just am not smart enough to pick up on. He was very clear that he was unhappy I was going to leave. But we never got to finish that conversation.
And I swear… if I run into him at the coffee shop on the corner one more time before work… well… that’s so not a chance encounter.
**sigh** Santa… what can I do? I really do love him. I know I do. It was the look of disappointment on his face that made me heavily reconsider my decision about the promotion. But then .. Now… nothing.
All I want for Christmas is to know what it would be to be his.
Santa… if you can’t make that happen, then I’ll not be responsible for the rest of my actions. I might need to force him to make that move. Or does that make me be the one to make that first move?
All I want is to know that he wants me. I could be patient and wait for the rest to follow… if I could just see what Lucy and Tara say is there… that he wants me. I need to see his heart.
Love,
Sue Thomas
PS: Levi sends his love too… and a couple wet kisses. ST

And I know the perfect way to do it…so if you and Midge need a hand coming up with the idea on how to re-distribute the letters, just email me…I’ll be happy to share my idea! Otherwise, I’ll just wait for Mione’s suggestion and see if it is the same as mine! ****PS. I bet it is****

Mione, thank you for sharing this delightful story. I have had so much fun reading and commenting. I am looking forward to seeing how Santa and Midge decide to implement the team's gift requests and their reactions!

Nick stroked his beard. “Another one.” He mused. “What’s in the water these women are drinking?”
Midge raised her eyebrows at him. “Oh come on now. Two of the men have it too.” She pointed out, stealing a cookie from the plate and nibbling it.
“So what’s wrong with the other two?” He teased, laughing as she rolled her eyes and kept nibbling the cookie.
“I have no idea.” Midge said sweetly. “You’re a man. You explain.”
He could only stare at her for a moment before he burst into laughter again and she joined in. “I take it you did already consult with Maggie on these?” He knew that sometimes his head elf went right away to his darling wife.
“Only on the girls.” Midge confirmed with a nod of her tiny head.
“All right.” Nick smiled and called over to the kitchens, summoning his wife to come over and meet with them.
Maggie soon appeared, bearing snickerdoodles that had been rolled in red and green sugar. “Yes darling?” She asked, setting down the cookies and taking a seat as she ate one.
“So… what do you think about these letters?” He asked, motioning to them.
“I think that those girls deserve their every happiness.” She said calmly while Midge nodded excitedly.
“But I don’t normally deliver this… Cupid does.” Nick said in desperation. He tugged on the end of his beard in frustration.
“Now, now.” Maggie soothed. “Don’t pull out your beard… you’ve been growing it for 150 years. It wouldn’t do for you to be uneven and unkempt.” She raised a brow at him until he dropped his hand.
“Begging your pardon, Boss.” Midge practically bounced in her seat at the edge of Nick’s desk. “That’s exactly where the re-distribution idea comes in. They’re adults… they’d realize that you gave back their letters in an effort to make their wishes come true.... That they would get what they truly want.”
His brow furrowed as he looked at his head elf and then at his wife. “Huh?”
Maggie chuckled when Midge looked frustrated that he didn’t understand it. “It’s okay, Midge honey.” She assured the tiny elf. “He’s a man… he can only do one thing at a time and now is not the time for him to completely get it.” She smiled sweetly at her husband. Nick rolled his eyes and ate a cookie. “It’s simple, Nick… from what I hear, Jack and Bobby both expressed a desire for the woman that haunts their dreams. Jack for Sue and Bobby for Tara.” She waited for his nod. “So those are the four that are easy. You give Sue, Jack’s letter and vice versa and do the same with Bobby and Tara. You might add a post script to Bobby’s… perhaps hinting that he might wish to get Tara a puppy? Or at least that he should take her to pick out a puppy around the first of the year”
Nick nodded. “All right. What about Lucy, D and Myles?” He glanced at Midge. “Do you have some idea?”
“Well… the only thing I can come up with is to mix it up between them so that they each have a different letter.” Midge said. “Myles would probably be able to write that letter to the powers that be … suggesting that he is tired of all the parade of supervisors that have been brought in… D is the one he’d work for… D is the one he respects enough to trust him to make the right calls when it comes to the good of the team…. Something like that.” Nick nodded, motioning for her to continue. “D’s got that cousin of his… who’s recently moved to DC. Tyrone might need someone to show him around DC and I think Lucy could have that covered.”
“But what’s the purpose of giving Lucy the letter from Myles?”
Maggie took over. “It would show Lucy that Myles just wants her to be happy… and if she’s got Tyrone… then she’ll realize that it’s a good thing and she can tell him how happy she is now.”
“You think it’s truly over for them?” Nick asked, watching her closely.
“I talked to Valentina. You know, Cupid’s wife?” Maggie said softly. “She said it’s been over. Cupid can’t get Myles to settle on any one woman. But it definitely is no longer Lucy.”
“And boss… we would have already done it, but you know as well as I do that only you can make the re-distribution happen properly.” Midge put in, knowing that if she had done it they would have ended up somewhere completely wrong… the letters were to him.
“All right.” He nodded. Nick took his pen and added his post script to Tara’s letter. He tapped his nose twice, and the letters folded themselves back up and were neatly ready to be sent back to the bullpen. He took them and made sure that the letters understood where they were to go before he tossed them in the magical mail fire in the right fireplace behind him… the left was for recycling. The letters burned quickly and were soon fluttering their way back to the Hoover building in DC. “Well then. Are we done for the day?” He grinned at the two most important women in his life. They both nodded. “All right. I’m out to check on the reindeer. Rudolph’s nose has been redder than usual... I need to make sure he's okay.” He shoo’d them out of his office and grabbed his coat.

The bullpen was empty and dark when the flash of light spiked and letters fluttered down on to desktops. They would wait patiently for morning, where they would be opened and the magic that fused them back together for mailing would energize the bullpen and it’s occupants.

This is so delightful and fun. You are so creative. I can't wait to see what happens next morning in the bullpen when the letters are opened.

This is so exciting!! I saw a movie this season about putting your letters to Santa in the fireplace and the magic would take them to him!! I love that you used the same method for Santa!! It makes it so special!!!
I can't wait to see what happens when everyone reads the letters!!!

Oh, I'm so excited to see how this pans out! Love will be in the air before we know it, though it is quite sad that Myles and Lucy are officially over. At least, they could still be friends.

I never pictured Old Saint Nick has hen-pecked, but it looks like he is...in the nicest way, of course! I agree with Ivory, this is so creative and so much fun to read.
