Knowing that the flowers he clutched were not nearly enough to make up for everything that had happened, Jack took a deep breath and pushed the buzzer to Sue’s apartment. The lights in their apartment had been visible from the street, so he knew someone was home, but it seemed like forever before he heard Lucy’s voice over the intercom.
“Lucy, it’s Jack.”
“Jack! You’re back! When did you get in?”
Jack grinned at the excitement in her voice. He probably should have called to let everyone know he was coming back, but he’d wanted to surprise them. “Just came from the airport. Can I come up?”
“Of course!” The door clicked, and Jack pulled it open. Not wanting to wait for the elevator, he took the stairs two at a time, being careful of the flowers in the process.
Lucy was waiting at the door for him and held it open as he approached. “I would give you a hug, but I’ve got a bad cold and don’t want to share it,” she told him. “I’m so happy to see you! Sue will be too. She’s been missing you.”
“I’ve missed her too. Where is she?” he asked, looking around expectantly.
“She and the rest of the team are off writing letters from Santa tonight.”
“Letters from Santa?” Jack repeated curiously, unable to hide his disappointment at the same time. He’d wanted her to be the first person he saw when he returned.
“Yes. It’s something we’ve gotten involved with through Tara, and it’s been really great. Tonight is the first night Sue’s been able to go, but I’m sure it’s been good for her. She’s been down since you’ve been gone, Jack,” Lucy said pointedly. He didn’t know what to say. While he knew that Lucy was supportive of him and Sue getting together, it was rare for her to actually talk about it with him.
“I’m sorry to hear that.”
“That’s all you have to say?”
“Lucy, I have a lot more than that to say, but with all due respect, Sue is the one I’m going to say it to.”
“You’d better.”
Jack raised an eyebrow as Lucy turned her back and walked away from him. Obviously being sick was taking its toll on her normally good-spirited nature. He couldn’t blame her for being annoyed with him, but he wasn’t sure how to respond to her either. He shifted his weight as he stood there, wondering if he should just quietly leave. Before he could make a decision Lucy had returned, thrusting an envelope into his hand, a candy-cane border lining its edges. “What’s this?”
“Open it and see,” Lucy told him, sitting down on the couch and reaching for a tissue to blow her nose. Laying the flowers gently on a nearby table, Jack took a seat in an armchair. The return address showed that it was from Sue’s niece, and it was addressed to Santa at the North Pole. Resisting the urge to ask further questions, he pulled out the letter inside, the emotions behind the words on the page hitting him full-force as he realized who had written them.
“She wrote it because Kelsey begged her to include her own letter to Santa Claus when she sent hers,” Lucy replied to his questioning gaze. “Bobby found it while we were volunteering and gave it to me.”
“Everyone knows?”
“No. Tara’s the only other one who knows. I didn’t think that Sue would want everyone knowing.”
“So Sue doesn’t know you have this, then?”
“Nope.”
“I need to talk to her, Luce.”
“You need to do more than just talk, Jackson. She needs to know where you stand. If you don’t want her, then you need to let her go.”
“Of course I want her.”
“Then you have to tell her! And don’t wait.”
“No, I can’t wait anymore,” Jack agreed. “When is she going to be home?”
“It’ll be at least a couple more hours, probably. I can give you the address if you want,” she offered.
“Thanks, Lucy.” A plan was forming in his mind, and while it meant he wasn’t going to be able to race to Sue’s side immediately, he needed to do this right.
