Kentucky Rain
Chapter One
~~~~~~~~~
Seven lonely days and a dozen towns ago
I reached out one night and you were gone
Don't know why you'd run, what you're running to or from
All I know is I want to bring you home
So I'm walking in the rain, thumbin' for a ride
On this lonely Kentucky backroad
I've loved you much too long; my love's too strong
To let you go, never knowing what went wrong.
Chet sighed deeply as he stood looking at the gas station time forgot. It’s pumps didn’t know what a credit card was and the numbers that counted the gallons pumped were far from the LCD readouts he was used to. For the fiftieth time that day he cursed the circumstances that had him traipsing from one pathetic, forgotten town to the next, searching for something he was afraid he’d never find. She didn’t even want him to find her.
Scuffing his boots against the concrete curb, he knocked yesterday’s mud from them… ‘gotta make more room for today’s mud’, he thought glumly. At last the ancient pump finished it’s job and he jammed the nozzle back into it’s resting place. With a glance at the grizzled man who’d said exactly two words to him since picking him up 45 minutes ago…‘Where to?’. Chet shuffled off toward the office, wondering what sort of sub-human manned this relic of a business.
~~o~~
'Five, six… seven, eight, nine… ten… eleven, twelve'… Sue’s eye’s blurred and she gave up trying to count the bills being thumbed through by the miscreant on the video. The quality was horrible. Tara’s usual magic hadn’t worked on it and Jack had apologized to no end when he handed it to her to scrutinize. “Just do the best you can. If you can’t get anything, I’ll talk to them. They can’t expect miracles.”
“Not from me anyway; they need to go to a higher source for that.” Screwing her mouth at an angle and giving him a ‘don’t you pity me?’ look she’d taken the DVD and sequestered herself in the conference room for the rest of the afternoon, trying to make out words from mouths that were little more than a blob of pixels. Now it was five ‘til five and she could feel the ache behind her eyes growing… time to stop.
The door inched open and then held it’s position, allowing the person behind it to watch her unobserved for a few seconds. When she punched a button and the light from the monitor in front of her faded away, Jack eased in and leaned against the wall. Her head was down, eyes closed and fingers at her temples, trying to ease the tension stored up there. Glancing at his watch, he tried to remember what time it had been when he gave her the DVD and she’d disappeared behind the paneled door. Two? Two, fifteen maybe? And here it was quitting time… even teenage boys playing video games would have taken a break or two to raid the ‘fridge in that amount of time, but she’d kept at it. He should have checked on her earlier, but his duties had way-laid him…
He leaned toward the table and knocked on it sharply, causing it to vibrate under her elbows. She started; her eyes flying open, but she said nothing… only giving him a reproachful look.
Sorry. You left Levi with L-u-c-y.
“He gets restless in here, locked away from everyone. Did you need me?”
His nostrils flared slightly and his eyes narrowed a bit as he seemed to give the question careful consideration before he lifted a hand and gestured toward the monitor. “Just wondering if you were able to get anything off the video…”
“A few words, and we know money changed hands, but that‘s about it. When they faced the camera I could read them some, but most of the time they were turned away and the video is so fuzzy…”
“Don’t worry about it. I spoke to the sheriff’s department while you were looking at it and I told them not to expect much.”
“But those girls… if I could read the video, we might have learned something…”
“I know. But we’re expecting more video tomorrow, and I told them they’ve got to do better this time. Fortunately for us, these guys seem to be happy to stay in one spot for the time being.”
Sue blew out a long breath and rubbed her eyes with a forefinger and thumb. “I hope so.”
He was across the room and his hands on her shoulders before he realized he was moving. Curling his fingers into the tensed muscles on either side of her neck, he steadied her when the inevitable startled jump came. Before she had a chance to pull away, he began moving his thumbs in a circle, softly pushing into her flesh and easing the tightness. She slumped forward slightly and in a matter of seconds he heard a jittery breath escape her, followed by a half moan - half sigh. Her head lolled forward, giving him better access to her neck and he happily took the offering, parting her hair and sliding his fingers to rest against each side; working his thumbs up and down methodically.
For a time, she moved her shoulders and rocked her head side to side, trying to aid his efforts, but now she stilled and he heard her breathing even out as she became suspiciously still. He leaned over, trying to see her face but a curtain of hair covered it so he was forced to pull it back gently. “Sue?”
Her eyes had drifted shut, lulled by his rhythmic ministrations, but they flew open when his finger brushed her cheek and she flushed guiltily. “Jack? Oh, I’m sorry. I… I…”
“It’s OK.” But she wasn’t watching him, her embarrassment too great to face him.
Jack clamped a hand around her upper arm and waved the other hand, finally bringing her apologies to an end. “It’s OK…Come on, I‘ll spring for pizza and then it‘s home and bed for you.”
“But m-o-o-o-o-m...”
Pulling her to her feet, he scrunched his eyes and jerked a thumb toward his chest. “Go ahead… mock me, I can take it. I’m secure in my masculinity.”
Sue grinned and began circling her chest with her hand. “Sorry Jack, I just meant you don’t have to watch out for me. I’m fine, really.”
“I was kidding.” He leaned close and teased her with his eyes. “ And I know you’re OK, but you’re also tired, and so am I. So let’s grab a bite and pick this back up tomorrow.”
A troubled expression crossed her face at his words. “What if these girls don’t have ‘til tomorrow…?”
I was so excited that you had started a story that I begged my husband to call his mother so that I could read your story - I knew I'd have PLENTY of time to savor every word . . . hehe.gif
SERIOUSLY - I wondered how long it would take you to enter THIS challenge! The story is starting out great, and your PG17 rating makes me know that the shower scene will be good and steamy (pun intended . . . ). Maybe by the end of this story, you'll be awarded your bachelor's or master's degree in SOAKing. smiley_181.gif
Jack's rubbing Sue's sore neck and she doesn't seem accustomed to such treatment, so we can expect a little tension there (of the kind we all love!) . . . there are girls missing . . . this Chet guy . . . hmmm?
Love it, can't wait for more . . . don't supposed there will be more tonight???? Anyway - thank you, thank you, thank you for starting another story!!
Chapter Two
~~~~~~~

Kentucky rain keeps pouring down,
And up ahead's another town that I'll go walking through
With the rain in my shoes, searchin’ for you
In the cold Kentucky rain, in the cold Kentucky rain.

Showed your photograph to some old gray bearded men
Sitting on a bench outside a general store
They said "Yes, she's been here"
But their memory wasn't clear.
Was it yesterday? No, wait the day before.

Charles, the ‘sub human’ gas station clerk, turned out to be very bright, personable, and eager to talk. Running the gas station was simply a means to an end - that being to save enough money for his first car - but he saw no reason not to make the most of his situation.

“Help you sir?” His friendly tenor sing-songed it’s way toward his customer as he crossed over the threshold.

Chet inclined his head toward the faded blue ‘89 Chevy truck and it’s lone grizzled occupant. “Gas”.

“You bet, can I get you anything else?”

“Nah, just the gas.”

“OK, that’ll be $38.82.”

Throwing the bills on the counter, Chet pulled a dog-eared photo from his pocket and flipped it around toward the chipper clerk. “Happen to see this girl around here?”

Charles finished fishing out the change from the cash register and then turned his attention to the crumpled photo. The girl smiling back at him was young, blonde, and attractive with a ‘girl next door’ sort of beauty. Blue eyes? No… more like green. She did look familiar…

“I’m not sure. Would she have been through in the last couple of days?”

‘Not sure? Good grief, it isn’t like there’s a bevy of blondes passing through this forsaken place every day for him to get her confused with.'

“Probably, but it could have been as much as a week ago.” It sounded lame to his own ears, but there was no way he could be sure. He wasn’t even sure he was headed in the right direction since losing her trail around that time.

“Well, there was a girl in here yesterday that could have been her. I was talking to the guys with her and didn’t really see her face.”

“Guys?”

“Yeah, there were two guys with this girl. Not her then?”

Time for lame answer number two. “Ummm, I don’t know. What was she wearing?”

“Oh gosh, let’s see… jeans I think, and a sweater over a t-shirt.”

“Dark blue sweater with a hood and red stripes on the sleeves?” Chet put a hand to his bicep to indicate where the stripes were located.

“Yeah, it was blue and red, and I think it did have a hood now that you mention it.”

This was as close as he had come all week and now that he had a glimmer of hope, he wasn’t sure what to do next. If it was her, why would she be with two guys? Reasoning told him she‘d caught a ride with them, but he didn‘t like it all the same.

“The guys she was with… did she act like she knew them very well? Call them by name or anything?”

Charles puffed a breath and made a face. “Not that I remember. I don’t think she said anything, to tell you the truth. I remember her looking at the, umm, feminine products. She only passed by me when she came in and left.”

“Which way did they head?”

“Didn’t see. The truck was headed west when they pulled in, but I didn’t watch ‘em leave.”

“What kind of truck?”

“Man, are you a cop or something?”

Chet blinked, unprepared for the question. If he thought it would help him get the information he needed, he‘d have lied in an instant, but he doubted he would pass for a cop if the boy just looked at him good and he didn‘t need to add any trouble to his life by impersonating a officer of the law. “No. She’s my girlfriend, or at least she was. I’ve been looking for her for a couple of weeks.”

Charles, being the bright young man he was, detected the tremor in the man’s voice and the way his eyes shifted away. “She in trouble?”

Again, Chet had no real answer, only the feeling in his gut that kept him looking for her. “I’m not sure.”

~~o~~

“D?” Jack slid to a stop in front of his supervisor’s office, letting Sue continue on toward the bullpen. “What’re you still doing here?”

“Couldn’t I ask you the same thing?”

“I’m leaving, I just had to pull Sue away from that video from Huntington. You should go home too; like I told her, this will be here waiting for us tomorrow.”

“That was before I got a call from Sheriff Ridder. They sighted the suspects about an hour ago moving west; he thinks they’ve moved across the state line… into Kentucky.”

“Across state line… if it wasn’t a federal case to begin with, it is now.”

D nodded and pitched his pen on the pile of papers in front of him. “Only if we get some concrete evidence.”

“Sue‘s trying D.”

Strong brown fingers rubbed across his chin as D nodded. “Yeah, I know. Listen, I was going to talk to you first thing tomorrow, but since you here... I’m sending you and Sue… Tara and Bobby too.”

Jack hitched brow up and tilted his head. “Four of us? Sue and I can coordinate with the local office; you think they need Bobby and Tara too?”

“I’ll be joining you myself to handle coordination, I want all of you out tracking these guys. Myles will stay here for the time being; he‘s got the Miller case to finish up, but I may call him in after that.”

There was more anxiety in D’s voice than there had been up to this point and Jack’s intuition was making noise in the back of his mind. Until now, there hadn’t been enough to go on to warrant this kind of involvement. The case had been handled by various districts, each brought in as the two suspects moved from county to county, and Sue’s talents had been sought out when the video footage gathered from various sources along the way showed absolutely nothing to implicate them further than the fact that they'd been spotted in every location where a girl had gone missing and they had footage of them talking to two of them. The thought was that perhaps Sue could read something incriminating. The two had holed up just outside of Huntington, where they’d been for the last four days and the local authorities had teamed with the FBI to supply disc after disc of blurry video surveillance.

“D… what did Ridder say?”

Staring at the pen on his desk, D’s nostrils flared and his lips curled menacingly. “They had a girl with them when they were spotted. Looks like they may have their next victim.”

Looks like the team isn't the only ones looking for this girl. I hope they find her...safe and sound. In the meantime, Jack and Sue in Kentucky holds so much promise...so many possibilities...so many ways to get SOAKed! Tina, I'm so glad you joined in the challenge!

Jack, Sue, Bobby, and Tara . . . all in God's country! Do you think they'll make it to the Western part of the state? Really, I think there would be some great places for bad guys to hide out in the Land Between the Lakes area . . . I could help them . . . really, I could . . . batting eyelashes.gif

Still wondering about Chet and the girl. Is he a good guy, or a bad guy? Unfortunately, now all I can think about are Jack and Sue coming to MY neck of the woods!! girl_sigh.gif I'm not worried about there being a shower scene - there are lots of waterfalls, lakes, rivers, caves, dirt (which requires the kind of showers everyone clamors for), so, knowing you, Tina, I think you'll find a way . . .

Chapter Three
~~~~~~~~~
Finally got a ride, with a preacher man who asked,
"Where you bound on such a cold, dark afternoon?"
As we drove on through the rain, as he listened I explained
And he left me with a prayer that I'd find you.
Kentucky rain keeps pouring down,
And up ahead's another town that I'll go walking through
With the rain in my shoes, searchin’ for you
In the cold Kentucky rain, in the cold Kentucky rain…
“D’s worried isn’t he?”
“That doesn’t mean you should stay here and not eat.” Jack cast her a look that would have withered criminals and signed for Levi to push the ‘down‘ elevator button.
“But I could finish that video…”
“Sue… you said yourself it was unreadable.”
“But I didn’t get all the way through it; the rest might be better.”
“But Tara did, and she said the whole thing was iffy at best.”
“But…”
“But nothing!” He braced the elevator door open with an elbow and faced her. “There’s nothing you can do tonight. You need to rest or you won’t be able to help them at all. You know, I’m beginning to think you don’t like my company.”
“You know that’s not true.”
“Do I? We haven’t had dinner after work in at least a month.” He had been teasing, but as he asked his next question, he realized he was extremely interested in her answer. “Why is that?”
~~o~~
The car sped past, spewing Chet with a heavy shower of mud and water. Ever since the old man behind the wheel of the faded Chevy had abruptly pulled over and pointed toward the door a half a mile back, the heavens had opened and the monsoons had begun. He didn’t even know what he’d done to deserve his sudden eviction from the truck. They’d just cleared the city limits of the last tiny burg when the old man had jarred him awake by hitting the brakes and had ejected him without ceremony, immediately triggering enough rain to make Noah think about brushing up on his cubits.
Twenty minutes later he succeeded in thumbing down another ride, this time with a decidedly more talkative old man who waved him into the car and even offered him a towel that had been doing duty as a make-shift cover over a worn spot on the back seat.
“Where you heading son?” Faded blue eyes twinkled still, though the man had to be in his eighties, and the wrinkles on his face served to make him seem more elf than human. He’d introduced himself as simply ‘Newman’ and then turned his attention to finding out about his rider. Chet, a talkative person by nature, found the man’s genuine interest impossible to resist and before long the story poured out of him. He told him pretty much everything, from how he and Kristie had met, to how her father had kicked her out when he found out they’d become intimate, to her confusing behavior the two weeks before she’d disappeared without a word. They’d had a fight the night before, and every time he recalled the blowup, he wondered what he was missing. It had been about absolutely nothing as far as he could tell; Kristie had been even more foul tempered than usual and when he’d said something about how he missed his “old girlfriend” her anger reach new heights. He tried to explain that he meant the ‘old Kristie’ who was full of life and loved to laugh, but she just got angrier and ended up slamming the bedroom door in his face. He had slept on their old ratty couch, avoiding the two broken springs half the night and finally falling into a deep sleep sometime in the early morning. She was gone when he woke up, and he‘d been looking ever since.
~~o~~
He climbed from the car with a wave to Newman; sorry to be parting company with the aging minister. They’d been traveling together for only a couple of hours; time enough to take them from one state to another, and more than enough for Chet to fall under the kindly man’s spell so that it was easy to imagine he’d known him for a lifetime. He’d learned of Emily, Newman’s wife of forty-two years who had ‘gone to be with her maker’ only a few months before, and of his four grown children and nine grandchildren. Chet had swallowed thickly when Newman promised to keep him and Kristie in his prayers, the gesture touching him more than he knew how to show.
He watched the car pull away slowly, letting the rain run down his face before hurrying into yet another gas station where he stood dripping on the gray carpeted matt just inside the door. A TV flickered behind the counter, keeping the young clerk engrossed; he didn’t even bother to look up as Chet squeaked his way toward the soft drinks occupying the wall of coolers at the back of the store. Grabbing a cola and pack of snack crackers, he squeaked back and waited until the antithesis of Charles decided he needed to wait on him so he’d go away.
“That it?” He slung his hair out of his eyes as he stood up, leaving the TV sound up too high.
“That’s it.” Chet’s hand hovered over his pocket, wondering if it would do him any good to show the picture this time. Unless Kristie had been on TV, he doubted the boy would have noticed her. Pulling the worn photo out once again, he was about to flip it around to show the disinterested youth when something about the TV news show caught his interest.
A young reporter stood along side a uniformed man, then the picture changed to show a truck matching the one Charles had described that morning. The one that might be carrying Kristie away from him.
Finally, I love the flow of the story.....keeps us on our toes and is extremely descriptive without giving away too much. Let's just say that I'll be waiting for your updates! Can't wait to read more!
Every time you post, I just find myself wanting more. I'm liking Chet already, too.
Can you really blame us for being suspicious? I mean, we can't help it! It's a bad epidemic that's been floating around this board since it's been opened!
I'm warming up to Chet, though! But it's Kristie that I'm worried about.
Yeah, and with your latest story you're quite the carrier, Linny! You ought to be quarantined!!!!! You've already infected Mjasd and look what happened, Jack got stolen. Now, you're trying to infect Tina? I just hope our team has been immunized! shakes head.gif
I wouldn't be so suspicious if I hadn't liked characters before and then found out that they were the murderers!! Although, with Chet, I do seem to be leaning toward he's a good guy!! I hope he's a good guy!!!
May we have a little more on why Sue seems to be avoiding Jack???
