Chapter 33

Taking a deep breath Sue pushed the door open, it was 9 weeks after their church wedding and she’d taken an early lunch.

‘Lucy, I want to do something special for Jack, can you cover for me if I tell him we’re going for lunch together?’

‘Sure’ Lucy smiled at her, ‘care to share?’

Sue shook her head, ‘it’s a surprise……. a good one I hope…….’

‘Jack hun, I’m going to take a rain check on lunch, Lucy and I are grabbing a bite together…… girl talk…….’ She knew he wouldn’t argue with girl talk.

‘SURE’ he nodded, trying to hide his disappointment, they’d shared lunch together pretty much every day, walking Levi and taking a few minutes out of the busy day to talk and make out, ‘I’ll head for the gym, have fun……’ he smiled.

‘Don’t work too hard hun, save your energy for tonight……..’ with a saucy grin she was gone leaving Jack at his desk with a goofy grin.

‘So, Sue what can I do for you?’ the doc patted Levi on the head before indicating for Sue to take a seat.

‘I …… I think I might be pregnant……’ she blurted out.

‘And that’s a problem?’ the doc asked softly, ‘too soon in to marriage?’

‘No….. it’s not that… but …… my husband was told he couldn’t have children…….. one in a million….. he had mumps when he was 14……. it can’t be anyone else…. but if I’m not then I don’t know what’s wrong……..’ her emotions overwhelmed her as she spoke. She’d felt tired and sick for a couple of weeks but never believed it were possible for her to be pregnant and it wasn’t until she’d missed her second period that she’d dared to hope.

Levi pricked up his ears at the mention of possible puppies for him to herd and protect, if Jack would let him of course.

‘Have you taken a test Sue?’ she shook her head at the question, having been afraid to buy the kit and be disappointed.

‘Ok, let’s take a quick test and if it proves positive we can run some bloods. Your husband has been tested?’

Sue nodded, accepting the test kit, ‘before we married…… he wanted to give me the option of backing out…… like that was ever going to happen……’

‘Ok, you go take the test and we’ll take it from there…….’

Handing back the piece of plastic Sue closed her eyes, leaving the doc to read it. Feeling a hand on her arm she opened her eyes, blinking at the broad smile she saw.

‘I think you’ve had your one in a million miracle Sue…… you’re pregnant…….’

As tears trickled down Sue’s cheeks Levi jumped up and licked her, barking happily at the news.

‘You think they may have made a mistake with his tests?’ she whispered, sighing as the doc shook his head.

‘They test, retest and triple test with things like this…… chalk it up to a miracle from the Big Guy…… so, you want me to run the tests?’

‘No….. can we book an appointment for tomorrow?’

‘Sure…. here, you take this home…… I think that husband of your may need some proof……. and congratulations, you’ll make a great mom Sue…….’

Accepting the test Sue wiped her cheeks clear of the tears and Levi’s slobber before heading out, her mind a whirl of emotions.

Puppies to herd and protect - perfect!!!

I just love this and the anticipation waiting on Jack's reaction is overwhelming while reading Sue's hormonal emotions...I can just see this happy tears I mean.

Chapter 34

‘Luce?’ Lucy whirled around at Jack’s soft voice, ‘I thought you were having lunch with Sue?’

‘And I thought you were hitting the gym’ Lucy murmured. She and Tara had opted to have lunch in their favourite little diner, happy in the knowledge that Jack would be out the way working up a sweat.

‘Changed my mind……. so, is she around?’

‘She …. errrrrr… she had something to do……. something nice, good…… a surprise…….. for you…….. ‘ Tara bumbled.

‘Oh……… ok, well her secret is safe with me…… I won’t tell her I know, ok?’ he smiled, his mouth watering at the thought of whatever Sue might be cooking up at home tonight. Her surprises usually consisted of a special meal and a night of passion when they had nothing else planned.

There weren’t too many evenings they got to spend alone with work, deaf club, other deaf events and bookworm and they both relished the evenings when they could lock the door and pretend the world didn’t exist.

Hearing his phone he smiled recognising Sue’s number, ‘hey hun, I’m taking the afternoon off……. don’t be late home…….. love you……’ before he could answer she’d rung off leaving him staring at the implement.

OK . . . we've established the fact that Sue is INDEED planning to surprise Jack . . . now let's get them in the same room together so she can TELL him!! I can't wait! But of course, I will . . . because you, the writer, hold the key to our happiness . . .

Chapter 35

‘Hi hun…… hope you didn’t work up too much of a sweat in the gym,’ her sultry tones almost had him dragging her to the bedroom as his body responded.

‘You can rest assured I didn’t’ he chuckled, planting a soft kiss on her cheek as he pulled her close and assailed her with soft, sensual kisses over her neck and mouth.

‘Go get changed hun’ she whispered ‘I have a surprise for you…….’

Jack nodded silently, he loved these surprises. They had grown so much in the few short weeks of marriage, neither no longer shy to be seen undressed and Sue was more than happy to take the lead in their love making.

‘WOW’ he murmured, dinner was his favourite meal; well done steak, fries, onions and mushrooms and he knew she would have made the ice cream dessert to follow.

After dinner they would walk Levi before heading to bed, possibly detouring to the shower.

She knew where his mind was taking them and, while happy to go there with him, she was excited at the news she would soon share.

‘Boy am I stuffed’ Jack patted his stomach and leaned back in the seat.

‘Leave it’ she whispered as he rose to clear the table.

Taking his hand she led him to the couch, pushing him back so he sat with something of a thud, ‘Sue hun……. I really don’t think I can do this on a full stomach’ he groaned.

‘I’m not expecting you to’ she teased, ‘not just yet…… close your eyes…..’

From his vantage point on the well padded bed Jack had bought him when they married, Levi watched with interest. He and Sue had walked for what felt like days as she searched for just what she wanted.

‘What’s this?’ he murmured feeling Sue place something in his hand.

‘Open your eyes’ she whispered, blinking back the tears as she anticipated his response.

‘Why’ve you bought me a teddy bear?’ he smiled, ‘I think I’m a little old for teddy bears…..’

‘You’re never too old for a teddy bear hun’ she teased, ‘look at it…’

Opening its paws Jack swallowed hard, the bear was light yellow with an inscription on its tummy, ‘daddy’.

‘Here…..’ Sue handed him another gift and took the teddy from him, shaking her head as he opened his mouth.

His heart pounded as he opened the large square parcel, his mind whirling with the possibility of what she was trying to tell him, except his doctor had told him it would never happen, ‘a million to one shot I’m afraid Jack’.

He smiled as he revealed a mug bearing the inscription ‘world’s best dad’ before that too was taken from him and another smaller, thinner package paced in his hand.

Tears trickled down his cheeks as he revealed the test strip, ‘how?’ he whispered.

‘I think we know how……….’ she chuckled, ‘the why? Who knows but I’m content to put it down to a miracle….. an answer to prayer……’

‘I can’t believe it….. how? When?’

‘I think around 6 weeks, maybe more…..’ her hand reached up to caress his cheek.

‘I don’t know what to say’ he whispered, ‘are you sure?’

‘Positive….. I was at the docs, he ran the test…….’

‘You went to the doc?’

Sue nodded and chewed her lip, ‘I thought I could be but if I wasn’t then I knew I needed some tests to explain the tiredness and nausea…… he wanted to do all the tests but I’ve booked an appointment tomorrow ……. I want you there…….’

‘I don’t know what to say’ he whispered as tears continued to trickle down and pool on his t-shirt.

‘You could say, ‘I’ll be there’’ she teased lightly, ‘followed by ‘I’ll buy whatever you crave, rub your feet and back when they ache…….’

‘All that and more’ he grinned, ‘I can’t believe I’m going to be a dad Sue, thank you…….’

‘You’ll make a great dad Jack’ Sue moved closer and hugged him tightly, ‘promise me one thing though……’

‘WHAT?’ he signed.

‘We don’t do what the Beckhams did and name it after the place it was conceived……’

Jack giggled, suddenly feeling 10 years younger with the news, ‘no I don’t want a child named ‘bedroom’……. or ‘beach’ or ‘jungle’……. and definitely not ‘Hawaii’’

‘Good’ as she snuggled in to him Jack rested his hand over her still flat tummy.

She knew he was talking by the movement of his cheeks but it wasn’t for her, ‘hey there baby, I’m your dad and the wonderful woman whose carrying you is your incredibly wonderful mommy. It’s going to be some time before we see you, although I hope we get to see a picture soon. I can’t tell you how much I love you already baby and I’m going to make sure you know every day just how much you mean to me….. and your mommy. I’m crazy about your mom, your mom says I’m just crazy but she’s wrong……. and I know that when you get older you’ll roll your eyes and sigh when we start making out but that’s the way you mom and I are, very much in love and totally crazy about each other…… tomorrow your mom and I are going to shop for your nursery so we can have it all ready for when you arrive…… except I’m banning your mom from painting or climbing ladders. She’s going to argue when I go all protective on her but some things just aren’t negotiable baby……..’

‘Can we…… still……. you know…….?’ he asked softly. They’d cuddled together, words not needed as they contemplated parenthood then walked Levi before heading to bed.

Sue smiled as Jack placed the teddy and the mug on his bedside table, keeping both from visitor’s eyes. As excited as they were they’d opted to wait for absolute confirmation and an estimated date before telling people.

‘We can’ she murmured, slowly removing each item of clothing and watching his eyes darken with passion as he looked on.

Sliding under the covers Sue watched him strip down to his boxers delighting in the way his body responded to his need for her.

‘LOVE YOU’ he signed as they cuddled together after making love.

‘I love you too hun’ she murmured, trailing her hand in lazy patterns over his chest.

That was a perfect reveal. I could feel Sue's excitement and wonder and Jack's tenderness. And I noticed this bit:Poor Levi!!! Clever Jack.

Chapter 36

Cuddling down on his bed Levi huffed happily, his two favourite people were expecting puppies which, he surmised, was about time. He’d never known dogs take this long to have puppies ‘although she doesn’t look like she’s having puppies’ he murmured. True he wasn’t very experienced in the way of puppies since he didn’t seem able to have them, or if he was there hadn’t been any claims of parenthood from the dogs he’d played with in the park.

He’d seen a few mommy dogs at the pounds and they were all huge, fat, wobbly creatures who huffed and panted and growled their way through the whole birthing process. More than once he’d given thanks that he was a man and as such didn’t have to go through all that pain. ‘And then there’s all that feeding after…… for weeks’ he thought, ‘now that looks painful, all those teeth……..’

His two pets had spent a good deal of time hugging each other, crying and praying, not that he knew what praying was; it seemed to involve closing your eyes and talking to the air. While he didn’t understand it all, his pets seemed to find it a helpful thing to do and had spent a good deal of time saying thank you for the imminent arrival of paws and their excitement had set his doggy heart pounding with excitement.

Idly he wondered if human puppies came out hairy with their eyes sealed shut before offering up a doggy prayer that their puppy would be healthy. He hadn’t totally understood what happened with D and Donna but he did remember them losing their puppy, had cuddled closer to Sue as she wept for the puppy they hadn’t known.
Turning around to flatten his bed Levi snuggled down and fell asleep, content that tomorrow was going to be long and exciting.

One thing, I think there is a role reversal here... Levi thinks Jack and Sue are his pets.

Chapter 37

He whimpered and Jack winced as the doc stuck a needle in Sue’s arm while she lay back contentedly on the couch. The doc had taken a detailed medical history and prodded and poked his human before suggesting that they were around 9 weeks pregnant.

To give him his due Jack held her hand while the doc was busy, shaming Levi who buried his head in his paws and let out a soulful whimper as the needle went in while Sue chuckled and rolled her eyes.

‘I’d like to give you a scan……… it’s a little early and won’t harm baby but I think you’d like to see the proof?’

‘Yeah, I’d like that’ Sue smiled, squeezing Jack’s hand. She knew he was still struggling to truly believe he was about to become a father, not that she blamed him. If she weren’t experiencing tiredness and a little nausea along with being far more emotional than she’d ever been even in the worse times of her life she wouldn’t believe it either.

‘Can we see anything?’ Jack smiled, ‘I mean it can’t be very big?’ his heart pounded at the idea of seeing their baby on screen.

‘Around an inch, but if you know what you’re looking for……..’

‘Let’s do it hun………’ Sue squeezed his hand, smiling when he nodded his agreement.

Squinting at the screen Levi looked in bewilderment, all he could see was a screen full of dots and black and he didn’t think either of his humans were any more clued up.

‘There…….’ the doc pointed at something so small Levi decided you really needed a magnifying glass to see it, ‘or extra strong reading glasses’ he huffed.

‘That?’ Jack murmured glancing to Sue who was squinting closely.

‘That………. and that……’ the doc pointed at two blurry bits giving them time to take in what he was saying, ‘looks like you have 2 million to one miracles from the Big Guy……. congratulations….’

Levi couldn’t contain his excitement as Jack let out a whoop of joy and hugged Sue tightly, their tears of delight mingling together.

While Levi did a happy dance the doc exited the room, thrilled for the woman who was one of his favourite clients.

‘It’s been quite the roller coaster ride today hasn’t it?’ he smiled as they sat in the diner. Having opted to take an extended lunch they were still getting their heads around the news about the twins.

‘It sure has hun’ she nodded, one hand caressed his cheek while the other rested over her tummy.

‘I think we should let our parents know tonight’ he suggested.

‘Looks like a plan’ Sue murmured, ‘but let’s keep it from the team for a few more weeks……’

‘Sounds good’ Jack smiled, ‘then I can enlist them to help decorate the nursery… I’m just glad we opted for a four-bedroom house. I’d hate to be trying to move with twins…. you know we’ll never ever travel light again don’t you?’

‘I can’t think of a better reason for never travelling light’ Sue whispered, ‘can we shop this weekend?’

‘You know, I think I might like to shop this weekend’ he smiled as Levi whimpered.

‘Perhaps we should leave Levi at home’ Jack suggested, glancing down at the dog who barked his agreement, ‘I don’t think he’s keen on shopping……..’

‘Levi, you’re such a man’ Sue chuckled, looking down at the dog who dropped his head and covered his nose with a paw.

‘We should go, before questions are asked.’ Jack sighed, ‘but tonight, I’m taking you out for dinner……. no cooking tonight for my very beautiful and pregnant wife….. you know I never thought I’d say that… it’s never going to grow old……. ‘pregnant wife’ yup, I like that……..’

Sue smiled at the goofy look he wore; he’d looked radiantly happy on both wedding days but nothing compared to the way his face lit up today. As he glowed with pride and pleasure Sue felt the thrill of her own delight welling up inside.

‘It’s quiet, we could always ask D for a personal afternoon…..’

‘I like the way you think Thomas’ he grinned pulling out his phone.

‘D says no problem, so let’s go shopping……’

‘I don’t want to go shopping, Jack……..’ her purring tone had him grabbing her hand and marching her quickly to the door.

Yeap, I'd be squinting, too

Twins? I was expecting a miracle, but I never thought it'd come that big.

They'll have a full house. It's wonderful!

Chapter 38

‘Mom? Is dad there?’ Sue cuddled in to him, sighing as Jack wrapped an arm around her shoulders. Their dinner date had been forgotten as they spent the afternoon making love, reluctantly dragging themselves out of bed to order takeout.

‘I think the two of you should sit down…….’ Sue smiled as she read Liz’s words, she’d automatically assumed that he was hurt.

‘You sitting? Good, then I’ll begin……. we’re pregnant……… no I’m not messing……. a miracle from the big guy the doc calls it……. around 9 weeks…….. twins……. mom? you still there? Dad is mom ok?’

Sue suppressed a small smile as Sam explained that she was rendered speechless.

Levi pricked up his ears as an ear splitting shriek came down the phone causing Jack to move the implement away from his ear.

‘No, we’re waiting to tell the team……. a few more weeks ……. yeah I was a bit stunned but I spoke to my doctor who confirmed they would have triple checked the tests……. he doesn’t ascribe to the miracle, just says we had our million to one shot early……no, we’re not having any tests. These two are a blessing from God and we’ll take them however they come…..we’re hitting the stores at the weekend…… sure, you can come down, bring the dogs……’ Levi’s tail wagged furiously at the thought of a visit from Buster and Gracie. He was still hoping that he would have a playmate soon but with the impending arrival of puppies it was looking unlikely.

Hanging up the phone Jack took Levi for a brisk walk around the block before joining Sue in the shower.

Yes... Levi has to remember that it takes longer for a baby (or in this case babies) to come around than it does puppies. Soon, though.
