Chapter 39
Snuggled up in the lounge with his new best friend, a somewhat ditzy Dalmatian they’d picked from the pound to be Sue’s new hearing dog Levi huffed softly. Bart had stormed in to their lives causing chaos and mayhem as Levi attempted to turn him in to something resembling a hearing dog. Progress was slow but he was getting there and turning Levi grey in the process.
Even now Levi couldn’t quite get his head around why they opted to get a dog when Sue was carrying puppies although he suspected it was largely down to Jack’s big heart. He’d spotted an article about an open day at the pound and persuaded Sue to go, not that she needed much persuading and so they’d gone along and Jack had fallen in love with Bart. Just beginning to show Sue had agreed that maybe now was a good time to get a new dog before she got too big and before she had her hands full with two puppies.
And so Bart had arrived and almost driven Levi to distraction. He was a real sweet dog but his tail wagged furiously all the time and his feet were huge, all of which caused chaos at home. His heart was in the right place and he was eager to please, to work as Sue’s ears but sometimes his brain just wasn’t engaged causing Levi to roll his eyes and sigh in frustration when the dog looked at the phone instead of the door or jumped up at Jack when he called Sue’s name rather than placing a paw on Sue’s leg. but slowly Levi had taken him in hand, resisting the urge to grab the dog by the scruff of the neck and shake him in frustration and now he was almost there, almost at the point when Levi felt safe to leave him to run things.
On the floor beside them were Gracie and Buster who had come to visit the newest arrivals.
Levi reflected on the last few months which had been a time of change for all of them. Bobby and Lucy were now engaged, the date was set for a couple of months ahead to give Sue time to recover from the birth before she took on matron of honour duties. Bobby had moved in to their new house complete with the German Shepherd dog he’d acquired through the pound.
Myles and Tara were married having opted for a civil ceremony which was to be followed by a church wedding with Bobby and Lucy.
While Sue was to be matron of honour for both her friends Myles had chosen D as his best man with Jack fulfilling the role for Bobby.
Sue had blossomed throughout the pregnancy and he and Jack had attended every appointment with her. As the pregnancy progressed Levi could see the images more clearly on the screen even if they didn’t look much like puppies to him.
His paws had ached by the time they returned home that first weekend, the car loaded with almost everything they would need for twins. Jack and his dad had decorated the nursery under Sue and Liz’s direction, pale yellow walls with an animal border and a beige carpet. The four of them had put the furniture together hindered by Levi who decided he just had to play with the boxes earning himself a teasing rebuke from all four humans before he was banished to the garden.
The puppies had opted to arrive in the middle of the night, not that Levi or Bart had been present. When Sue woke him Jack had been a wreck, trying to dress, ring his parents, Sue’s parents and the hospital while Sue simply rolled her eyes and concentrated on breathing through the contractions.
They’d heard about the birth the following day, both joining in Jack’s sentiment that he was glad the men didn’t have to go through it.
Sue had thrilled at Jack’s ability to keep her in the loop without a translator whilst still holding her hand and rubbing her back while Jack had reassured her he was more than happy to stay away from the business end of the birth. As it was he told his parents later it had hurt him to see Sue in pain delivering their children. Levi was relieved he hadn’t been there, he hated to see Sue hurting at any time, even if there was something good at the end, he’d sat and listened to her cry too many times in the past to ever want to do it again.
He and Bart had gone to the hospital the following day where they were introduced to the puppies which still didn’t look puppy like to Levi; they had no fur and their eyes were wide open, as were their mouths, both making plaintive little noises as Sue shuffled up the bed, ‘every time you hear them buddy you have to get Sue…… you too Bart’ Jack looked down at the spotty dog who simply looked back at him, causing Levi to roll his eyes and huff silently.
Peering at the puppies in their plastic cribs Levi smiled a doggy smile recognising the eyes of his alpha male staring back at him, they were very much his puppies.
‘Levi, Bart, this is Sarah Elizabeth and this is Joshua Samuel ……..’ Jack lifted Sarah from her crib allowing Levi and Bart to say hello while protecting the baby from overeager paws and noses before handing her to Sue and lifting Joshua out.
Levi snuffled his nose in confusion, not only did they not look like puppies they didn’t smell much like puppies either, or sound like puppies. In fact to his inexperienced ears they sounded more like kittens.
Sue and the babies had remained in hospital for two more days, arriving home to a houseful of parents who had been busy cooking up a storm in the kitchen.
While the humans cooed and aahhed over the puppies he and his canine friends hit the garden, playing noisily together before lying down beneath the oak tree which offered shade from the summer sun.
While there was much discussion about who they looked like there was one thing on which each human agreed; they both had Jack’s eyes, ‘can you imagine what mischief they’ll get away with when they get older?’ Sam chuckled.
‘Like I didn’t?’ Jack sighed rolling his eyes and winking at Sue who almost melted.
‘You got away with plenty, son’ Sam chuckled, ‘didn’t he sweetheart?’
Liz nodded, ‘more than he should have……. it’s those eyes….. try and develop immunity Sue…..’
‘I’m already lost’ she smiled, ‘I’m sunk without trace when any of them look at me…..sadly Bart has picked up the trick from Jack and Levi…….’
Aware of how interfering Sue’s mom could be Levi had imagined that she would spend much of her time telling his humans that they were doing things wrong but to his delight Liz had taken her in hand, successfully diverting her attention away from the young couple as they adapted to parenthood.
They’d been home for two weeks now, Sue’s parents heading home after one week while Jack had taken another two weeks off work to help Sue and to spend time bonding with the babies. In truth though Levi recognised that both humans had bonded from the day they discovered they were pregnant.
Much later as the 4 dogs curled up together Jack and Sue snuggled together in bed. Both puppies were fed, changed and sleeping soundly.
‘I LOVE YOU SUE…….’ he signed, ‘thank you, for the last year, for being my wife, for carrying our children…..’ tears pooled in his eyes as his emotions threatened to overwhelm him.
‘I love you too hun, I’m thankful for the last year, for having you as my husband and father to our children……. there is no-one else I want to spend my life with…..’ snuggling close to him Sue rested her head on his chest and one hand over his heart, sighing softly as he hugged her tightly, both looking forward to the time when they could practice making puppies.
‘If people had tails’ Levi mused that night to his friends, ‘then there would have been an awful lot of tail wagging going on recently.’ Instead their humans had contented themselves with smiles, laughter, hugs and tears of joy. ‘it’s not so good as tails’ he sighed, ‘but I suppose it works for them.’
As the humans slept the canines whimpered their agreement and wagged their tails happily.

WONDERFUL story! I enjoyed every post, and loved the way you tied it back at the end with Levi's perspective! This quote caught my eye. I loved the way Levi has accepted his "Senior Service Dog" status while training the "new recruit," and that he definitely recognizes Jack as his "Alpha Male!"
Thanks for a great story!!!

I'm glad that Bart could prove himself to Levi after a while. He know knows that his family is in good hands... er paws.

Not one puppy, but two puppies!! God works in mysterious and beautiful ways!!!
I can just see Levi giving off heavy sighs at Bart's incompetence, and finally having grudging respect for how much he's learned!! And, how lucky that now there are two of them to watch over the twins!!!
Cath, this is a beautiful story from beginning to end!! Thanks for sharing with us once again!!!

I was so sure I had finished reading your story LTS. I was so happy to find I hadn't and printed out the second half last night and was so delighted with where you went with it.
The build up in the story of the love and sacrifice both Jack and Sue were willing to make for each other

How exciting to find that their one in a million turned out to be two.
A boy

and girl

twins will be keeping Jack and Sue with smiles on their faces and very busy. From one who knows and loved every minute of it.

Levi was so sweet, funny and charming in his observations. I loved how he was so aware of the baby's eyes being Jack's.
Thank you for another wonderful story LTS.

Oh cath, I'm so late catching up but have had a blast rereading your story from start to finish. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for giving Levi his litter of pups!

I think he would have been disappointed if Sue had produced only one.

You've managed to keep me alternately laughing and swooning and I don't think I'll ever view Levi in the same light again. Great story.
