Watching as Jack and Levi left together Sue grinned, the two of them looked very happy, Levi was dancing around excitedly while Jack was trying desperately not to get tangled up in his leash.
‘So, he’s going to speak with them?’ Lucy asked dishing up the cold meat salad the girls were sharing. They’d decided that since the guys were having a night out they would have another night in, without the chick flicks which only sent them in to something of a funk.
‘He is….. well he said he is but this is Jack we’re talking about’ Sue sighed. He’d promised to have Levi back by 10.30 before extracting a promise from Sue that she would join them for a walk.
While Sue had seen Jack and Levi to the door Tara and Lucy had taken the chance to discuss their plan, ‘Bobby had best come back with something or he’s toast’ Tara growled, balling her fists as she spoke.
‘He’s right though, Jack may not say anything and if he doesn’t then we can’t blame Bobby’ Lucy jumped to his defence, earning herself a teasing smile from her friend.
‘Bobby is trained to get information out of people who don’t want to give it up. If he can’t do this then he needs to head back to Quantico for a refresher course in interrogation techniques’ Tara whispered, aware that Sue could return at any second and read their lips.
‘You miss him don’t you?’ Lucy asked as Sue’s hand reached out to throw Levi some scraps.
‘I do, it’s weird it feels like a part of me is missing…… I hope he’s having fun’ Sue smiled softly.
‘I’m sure he is, knowing Jack he’s spoiling him something rotten’ Lucy grinned.
‘And he’s probably beating the guys at pool and darts……’ Tara giggled.
‘Just so long as he’s not trying to drink them under the table’ Sue teased.
‘So, what movies are we watching?’ Tara turned their focus away from the men and they settled back to enjoy a girlie night, their thoughts drifting to the men as each prayed for a successful outcome.

Chapter 8
Sitting at Jack’s feet as they ate Levi waited for him to turn the conversation to the girls. They talked football, baseball, basketball, hockey, sailing and just about anything else but not women. They’d played pool and darts, sunk a couple of beers, or half a pint in Jack’s case. Each time Jack opened his mouth Levi prayed that this might be it…….. it wasn’t.
Not that Bobby was any better, he seemed to be avoiding the subject too and once again Levi wished he could speak. ‘No, I can speak’ he reminded himself ‘it’s these humans, they just don’t understand dog’
Finally Jack, with a good deal of help made the breakthrough and Levi almost kissed the older man.
Checking his watch D sighed as Bobby commented about Donna standard time, ‘I know you’re all jealous and you want what I want instead of these empty single lives you all lead….’
‘Maybe you’re right D’ Jack nodded, oblivious to Levi almost begging him to take the next step. ‘’it can get kinda lonely at times….. so Crash’ he slapped his friend on the shoulder, ‘any woman of interest on the horizon?’
‘Yes koala boy, is there some poor unfortunate woman upon whom you’ve set your sights?’ Myles chuckled.
‘There may be’ Bobby muttered glancing at Jack and hoping that if he spoke up his friend might do the same.
‘Yeah? Spill’ Jack encouraged.
‘She was dating a friend but they broke up some time ago……she’s beautiful, smart, funny, caring……’
‘Isn’t that most women?’ Myles asked softly.
‘Yeah, but I’m not sure if my friend, and I use that term loosely would be happy with me dating his ex…….’
‘How long is some time?’ D asked.
‘Three years………’
‘Well I would think that if said loose friend and girl haven’t since hooked back up again in three years they probably aren’t ever going to……. I’d say go for it’ Myles murmured.
‘So does this girl have a name?’ Jack murmured casually.
Bobby swallowed hard, ‘yeah…… errrrrrrr……. ummmmmmmmm…… errrrrr……’
‘Come on man, spit it out, we’re growing old here’ Myles smiled.
‘Lucy……..’
‘Lucy? You’re interested in Lucy? Didn’t see that one coming’ Jack chuckled.
‘Then you need to work on you observational skills Hudson, I’ve caught him looking at her across the pen. She’s a very beautiful woman and feisty. You could do worse……… of course she could do much better but if she’s the one you want then I’m not going to stand in your way’ Myles smiled warmly.
‘And you Myles?’ Jack breathed a sigh of relief as D took up the interrogation

‘All women are’ Myles threw Bobby a dark look as the Aussie slapped him hard across the back, almost spilling his beer down his shirt.

‘So, what’s stopping you?’ D queried, startling as Levi licked his hand.
‘The no dating rule for a start’ Bobby murmured, ‘and what if she doesn’t want to date me? I mean I’m imagining the whole marriage, mortgage, children thing and I don’t even know if she’d want to date me never mind marry me……’
‘Only one way to find out, ask her…… faint heart never won fair lady…….’
‘No, but it did avoid humiliation, hysterical laughter and teasing’ Bobby murmured.
‘The rule?’ Jack asked softly.
‘Out dated……… unworkable, we’re losing good agents who fall in love with a colleague and leave because we won’t allow them to work together and date. Some move units and then leave because work schedules mean they never see each other……let me know when you’ve made a move and I’ll talk to the AD about a couple of test cases…….’
D chuckled as Levi squirmed out from under the table and jumped up, licking his face as his tail wagged furiously. He loved this man, not as much as he loved Jack but right now it was a close run thing. Now they had to get Jack to open up and they’d be home and dry.
‘So Hudson, we’ve spilled our hearts, what about you?’ Jack shrank back as four pairs of eyes looked in his direction.
‘Is that the time?’ Levi buddy, you’re on a curfew and if I don’t get you home I’ll be joining you in the dog house…….’ Grabbing his keys and calling Levi he raced out of the door, his heart pounding madly.
‘I’m dead’ Bobby groaned as the door closed behind Jack.
‘And why would you be dead?’ Myles arched his eyebrows.
‘Because I was set and task and informed that failure was not an option…….’
‘A task?’ D smiled.
‘A task……. I had to find out if Jack was interested in Sue…… and report back…… to Tara and Lucy……… D, buddy could I transfer to Alaska?’
‘I think they’d track you down, those two can be very thorough when they want to find someone’ Myles grinned, although in truth he didn’t envy Bobby having to return empty handed tomorrow.
‘I think we all know he is, heaven knows he spends enough time with her and more than enough time watching her across the pen’ D tried to lift Bobby’s spirits.
‘We all know that but he’s never admitted it, we’ve added 2 and 2 and we might be coming up with three hundred and ninety-eight. I had to have him admit it guys. I’m toast……’
‘We’ll back you up, the suspect fled the scene before he could be interrogated…..’ D nodded wisely.
‘Maybe you could talk to them for me?’ Bobby suggested hopefully.
‘And you a tough FBI agent…….. and armed’ Myles chuckled, thankful they hadn’t come to him with the request.
‘Tara’s armed too……. and she’s a better shot than me…..’ Bobby hid his head in his hands and wished he’d run when the two women approached him earlier that day.

‘Don’t look at me like that buddy…….’ Jack sighed as Levi glared at him. ‘I know it’s only 9.30 and curfew isn’t for another hour, how about we take a long walk huh?’
Levi stared in to Jack’s brown eyes and understood some of the emotions he was feeling; loneliness with a touch of fear. Emotions he’d experienced in the pound before Sue arrived. His past had taught him that humans could not be trusted and yet he wanted a loving, happy home with joy and laughter. He’d found it with Sue but it had been hard to take that first step.
Squirming his way on to Jack’s lap the dog licked him gently, now wasn’t the time for fun and games, now was the time for gentle reassurance.
‘I’m crazy about her buddy but if I can’t tell her then how can I admit it to Bobby or D or anyone else…….?’
‘Tell her’ Levi growled softly.
‘I wish you could talk, then you could tell me if she has any feelings for me other than friendship……..’
‘I am talking you doofus, you’re just not understanding me’ Levi huffed. ‘She’s crazy about you……she wants to make puppies with you……..’
‘My signing is poor, no matter how hard I try it doesn’t get any better….. I want to be able to communicate in her first language, I want to understand when she signs with her friends…….’
‘Hey, you understand signs better than dog’ Levi grunted ‘and a whole lot better than her family do……….’
‘She’s everything I ever wanted in a wife, smart, warm, caring, gentle, she makes me laugh…… she makes me mad sometimes too when she tries to save the world alone….. she accepts me as I am but makes me want to be better……. she listens like no-one else I know…… and she’s beautiful…… she’s not going to want me is she buddy?’
Levi rolled his eyes and he let out a sorrowful whimper, ’if only you knew mate. Don’t you see the way she looks at you across the pen? Don’t you realise she loves you? Don’t you understand that you are everything she ever wanted in a man? Don’t you know that for the first time in her life she’s imagined marriage and children and a mortgage and that’s because you’ve accepted her and her deafness, you’ve encouraged her to achieve more and more. You’ve allowed her to become the woman she wanted to believe was lurking beneath, the woman which had been hidden and protected from cruel jibes and the belief of others that because she was deaf she was stupid and incapable of becoming anything? And you dare to call me knuckle-head????????????????? What I wouldn’t give for a two-by-four to knock some sense in to the pair of you…………’ sighing Levi decided he needed a walk before he did something he might regret. Pulling on his leash he let Jack know he needed some exercise while he gave the matter some thought.
While Levi chased all kinds of exciting smells in the hopes that a smell might lead him to something small and furry to chase Jack rested back on the bench muttering to himself. ‘You can do this Hudson, just open your mouth and tell her; ‘Sue I love you’ no that’s too much too soon, ‘Sue I’m attracted to you and I’d like it if you would come out with me’ no that’s lame, it’s about what you want, you need to know what she wants…… what if she doesn’t want me? What if she wants a relationship with someone from her world?’ Sighing as his thoughts became jumbled he rose to his feet and called Levi to him.
‘What am I going to do?’ Levi let out a sad howl wishing Jack could speak dog because then he would tell him about the nights Sue allowed her doubts to blot out her hopes that Jack might be the man God had ordained as her husband.

Very sweet post! Poor Levi. I'm feeling sorrier for him than Jack! He knows what he wants to say, but Jack just doesn't understand him!

Poor Levi....the frustration of it all.....you know Jack...you won't know anything till you ask. It's better to have loved and lost then to never have loved at all.

Poor Levi! I love the way Tara and Lucy ganged up on Bobby -- and how Jack managed to get out of answering Bobby's question. And I agree with Levi -- Jack is a klutz! Bumbling too. I have every confidence in Levi getting things straightened round for them though.

‘So?’ Sue barely gave him time to get out the building before she was grilling him for information.
‘So? We had a good time; I won a couple of games of darts…….’
‘I would expect that, you have a good aim with a gun, I’d expect you to be as good with a dart, but I want to know what you learned…..’
‘Ok, well Bobby has a thing for Lucy and Myles has a thing for Tara and D thinks the rule is outdated and unworkable and the bureau is losing too many agents because they fall in love with a co-worker……..’
‘Wow, you did a great job Hudson, I’m proud of you’ she smiled.
‘I can’t take all the credit, D played a big role in digging the dirt’ he smiled.
‘Shame you told me that, guess I’m gonna have to take D out for dinner instead…..’
‘Guess you will’ he grinned ‘but I’m not so sure Donna will be too happy about that…..’
‘Oh well, guess I’ll have to take you out instead…… ‘

Levi’s head dropped as the two of them chatted easily about everything and nothing and all thoughts of matchmaking flew from their minds. ‘Boy do we ever need a miracle?’ Levi huffed.
‘And?????????????’ Lucy pounced on her room mate the second Sue opened the door.
‘And, yes Bobby is interested in dating you and Myles is interested in dating Tara……. I’ll leave you to tell Tara then’ she sighed as Lucy grabbed the phone excitedly.
‘Maybe I should have Lucy speak to Jack, what do you think, buddy?’ Sue snuggled down under the covers, smiling as Levi lay beside her and licked her hand.
More than once Lucy had suggested taking Jack to one side and grilling him as to his feelings about Sue, but each time Sue had refused to let her, ‘no…… you can’t put him on the spot like that, Luce……..’
Personally Levi thought it was an excellent idea and he’d lived in hope that Lucy might ignore Sue but she’d bowed to her friend’s plea and done nothing, until today when she and Tara had enlisted Bobby’s help. Not that he’d fulfilled his role.
Levi didn’t want to be in Bobby’s shoes when he fessed up that he’d failed in his task, ‘hopefully he can kiss her silly after his confession’ Levi mused before falling asleep, oblivious to Tara and Lucy’s happy chatter.
‘Hey Crash’ Jack lay back on his bed having opted to speak with Bobby and Myles tonight.
‘I have good news…… the lady after whom you moon, moons after you…….’
‘Huh?’ Bobby mumbled, his thoughts had been consumed by the serve he was due to get from Lucy and Tara when he had to admit he had failed in his objective.
‘Lucy is interested in you, Sue is gonna tell her tomorrow…….’
‘You’re serious?’ Bobby almost yelled down the phone causing Jack to pull it away from his ear.
‘Deadly, so don’t mess it up, I’ll see you tomorrow……’ ending the call with Bobby he rang Myles.
‘Myles, Tara has something of a thing for you, Sue’s telling her tomorrow, don’t mess it up. Remember Tara is armed……..’
Closing his phone a part of him wished he’d found the courage to admit his feelings to Bobby so maybe Bobby could have talked to Sue to see if she felt anything for him.
Except he wouldn’t because if it turned out as he feared and she saw him as nothing more than a friend then his heart would be broken and he would no longer indulge in beautiful dreams of marriage and children with Sue.
‘So?’ Sue barely gave him time to get out the building before she was grilling him for information.
‘So? We had a good time; I won a couple of games of darts…….’

‘So, what news do you have?’ Bobby almost dropped the scalding mug of coffee he was holding as he prepared to do battle with the pile of paperwork on his desk.
‘Lucy, don’t do that’ he protested, ‘what news about what?’ he knew exactly what she was referring to and wasn’t relishing having to admit the truth that he had nothing for them.
‘In the conference room, now’ Tara ordered, anxious that Sue should not enter the pen and read there lips.
‘Give me a minute’ he begged as the two women almost dragged him from his seat.
‘Ok, so what news?’ Lucy asked, excitement burning in her soul.
‘Nothing……. he’s good, I don’t think any of us knew just how good’ Bobby muttered, preparing to defend himself against the onslaught he knew was headed his way.
‘Nothing? Whaddaya mean nothing? You asked the question didn’t you?’
‘Yes luv I did and Jack ducked it by saying it was late and Levi had to be back……. and then he left……’
‘What time was this?’ Tara grilled him.
‘Around 9.30……’
‘9.30? We weren’t expecting him back before 10.30…… and you didn’t think to stop him leaving???????????’
‘Hold it right there Lucy, what was I supposed to do? Ring Sue and say ‘hi Sue what time did you want the dog back’?’ grab hold of him and pin him up against the wall and refuse to release him until he’d spilled the beans? Take him outside and threaten to shoot him or beat him up? What was I supposed to do huh?’
‘More than you did’ Lucy huffed.
‘Ok, next time I’ll chase after him and shove him in the trunk and drive around all night until he tells me…… I did my best and if you don’t believe me ask D and Myles, they were there……’
‘You asked him in front of D and Myles?’ Tara threw up her hands in exasperation, ‘well no wonder he didn’t want to answer with them there. Couldn’t you have asked when it was just the two of you?’
‘It never was just the two of us, we all went out together, we played pool and darts, ate and drank together……. I did my best. We’d talked about things and the opportunity came up and I took it and he avoided it……. if you want me to I can try again…….’
‘Yes we do……… failure will result in you being sent to Quantico for a refresher on interrogation techniques’ Lucy wagged a finger at him, her face stern while she tried to suppress a smile.
‘But if I’m at Quantico then I can’t take you out for dinner, Luce…….’ he was vaguely aware of Tara skipping out the room and closing the door quietly.
‘You want to take me for dinner?’ she squeaked.
‘I do…. as you know Miss Dotson………’ he grinned, ‘so will you? Come to dinner with me? On a date, none of this dating without dating stuff that Jack and Sue do.’

‘Sounds good. Thank you Bobby’ to his surprise Lucy gave him the briefest of kisses on the cheek before exiting the room, her emotions a mix of excitement that Bobby had asked her out, frustration that once again Jack hadn’t admitted his feelings about Sue and sadness for her friend.

‘Myles, what happened last night?’ Tara asked softly.
‘Last night? Sorry Tippy you’ve lost me……. when last night?’
‘When Bobby was meant to be asking Jack about his dream woman……’
‘Oh that ‘when’ Jack bolted, came out with some lame excuse about having to get Levi home before curfew and shot through……. can we talk?’
‘Sure’ Tara nodded, perching herself on his desk.
‘Not here…….’ Tara followed Myles as he strode down the corridor to an empty room.
‘Tara…. I know my reputation isn’t exactly stellar when it comes to women…… I’m hoping….. I’d like it if….. I’d very much like to take you out for dinner….. on a date…..’
‘You’re asking me out? For real? On a date?’ she squeaked, even though she’d known it was coming she was still a little surprised that he’d actually done it.
‘Yes, Tara I’m asking you out on a date for real. So, dinner tonight?’ he murmured softly.
‘I’d like that Myles, thank you’ she murmured.
‘Good, smart but casual and I’ll pick you up at 7…….’
Thank you’ she almost bounced out of the room before turning and giving him a peck on the cheek, blushing slightly then heading back to the pen.
‘I think we succeeded’ Jack smiled as first Bobby then Lucy wandered in to the pen, broad grins on their faces.
‘I think you could be right, Hudson’ Sue chuckled, nodding in the direction of the coffee machine where Myles was fixing himself a coffee whilst humming a merry tune and to Tara’s desk where she was sitting in something which looked like a fuzzy haze.
‘We still on for lunch?’ Sue asked softly, ‘I mean I did promise you lunch when you let the guys know…..’
‘Sure’ he nodded, ‘and tonight I’ll buy after deaf club, or before….. whichever you prefer…..’
‘Before? Then we can walk Levi after…..’ she suggested, ‘not that you have to walk him with me, I’m more than capable of walking him alone…….’
‘I want to….. you know I don’t like you walking him alone at night, you never know what sick idiots might be lurking……..’
‘I’m careful and I do walk him alone if you’re away or busy’ she smiled trying to look angry with him. As much as she liked to be independent and got ticked when the guys got overprotective she did like to have Jack with her as she walked Levi at night. Not only did she feel safer but it gave them time to talk about the current cases, any personal concerns or simply to chat about everything and nothing. It also gave Jack a chance to learn more signs and practice those he knew. While she knew he wasn’t a natural at languages like Myles was, she also knew that he was better than he believed himself to be. Rather than focussing on his achievements he tended to focus on his weaknesses and struggles to understand conversations at deaf club or between Sue and her deaf friends.
‘I hope whoever this woman is appreciates his efforts’ she muttered softly, biting back the tears which pooled in her eyes.
Sitting beside her Levi whimpered softly and rested his head on her thigh. He hated to see her sad and he had a pretty good idea what was hurting her, or rather who was hurting her. He glared at Jack who visibly shrank back in his seat, deeply ashamed that he’d hurt Sue and bottled out of revealing his feelings.
Levi listened as Sue plastered on a happy face when her friends talked excitedly about their forthcoming dates and he bit back the urge to bite Jack on the butt, that man was so frustrating at times. ‘If he were a dog…….. well he’d never make it to dogdome’ Levi considered, ‘the closest he’d get to being a dog would be one of those clueless nodding dogs in the back of someone’s car’ Levi mumbled softly as Sue hugged her friends. Here I am, sitting in my office just off a perfectly quiet (which is not always the norm) library main room, wanting to laugh my head off. I absolutely loved this post, and this part, especially. I was finding myself shaking my head in frustration at Jack's lack of intestinal fortitude, when I came upon this part, and it just made me laugh! Thanks for starting my day off great!

Chapter 13
Walking Levi after Deaf Club Sue was lost in her thoughts. She’d helped Lucy prepare for her first date with Bobby before Jack picked her up. They’d eaten at a cosy little Italian restaurant where she’d taught him more signs and they’d talked and signed about nothing in particular before heading to deaf club.
She knew she shouldn’t but she’d watched him closely throughout the evening keen to know who it was he was interested in but, other than being his usual friendly, charming self he hadn’t appeared to sign more to one woman than any other. As usual he stuck pretty close to herself or Deanne, needing the verbal prompts they could give when he struggled to follow a conversation although that need had diminished over the couple of years he’d been joining her.
Assuming whoever had taken his fancy wasn’t there she had wracked her brain but all the usual suspects were there and all she’d done was give herself a headache.
As they usually did at deaf events Levi and Katie had found a quiet corner in which to cuddle up together and snooze. More than once she’d smiled at the pair of them and wondered if life wouldn’t be easier if people had tails. She’d often thought that if Jack were a dog he’d be a lab, a chocolate brown one of course; intense but with a sense of fun, hard working and loyal but ready to play and relax.
‘OK YOU?’ he signed, touching her arm to gain her attention.
‘Yeah, I’m good’ she smiled, losing herself under the intense gaze which settled on her.
‘Wondering how the others are kissing along?’ he grinned.
‘Kissing? I’m not sure they’re at the kissing stage just yet’ she chuckled.
‘They should be…… if I were dating a beautiful woman, I’d be giving her a kiss on the first date, even if it were just a kiss on the cheek when I picked her up……’
‘I’ll ask Lucy’ she giggled, ‘we should get home, it’s late……..’
Continuing their silent stroll around the park Sue imagined a kiss from Jack, after their kiss in dragon lady’s office she knew a simple peck on the cheek just wouldn’t be enough for her while Jack allowed himself to dream of taking Sue out on a first date knowing that a simple kiss would not be sufficient for him. Not after that kiss; a kiss which had been a thousand times more wonderful than any kiss he’d shared with Allie or any of his other girlfriends.
Sniffing at the exciting scents Levi thought back to his conversation with Katie.
‘Look at those two’ he huffed softly, nuzzling her ears with his nose.
‘Jack and Sue?’
‘Yeah’ he answered.
‘They together yet?’
Levi shook his head, wuffing in frustration, ‘no, they both tell me it’s what they want but they don’t tell each other. The only reason they tell me is because they think I can’t tell the other, or anyone else. Which I can’t but I wish I could because their secrets wouldn’t be safe……. I wish I could do something…..’
‘Thought about shoving them in a cupboard?’
‘I have but I don’t think I could shove them both in at the same time and even if I could I can’t lock the door……. I’d have them both telling me off and we’d achieve nothing…….’
‘We need opposable thumbs like the monkeys……. then we could lock them away’ Katie nodded wisely. As both a hearing dog and helper dog she was able to do far more than Levi but locking doors was beyond her too.
Levi stared in amazement at the golden lab; he didn’t have the first idea what a thumb was never mind an opposable thumb but he didn’t like to look stupid in front of Katie who he considered to be his girlfriend since Nkita had gone from his life.
Although he sometimes saw her at the park he avoided her, believing that to play with the black lab was to invite David back into her life and he was too loyal to betray Sue.

Joy, you took the words right out of my . . . er . . . fingers? I ditto what you said! I think a kiss on the cheek, after what he said, would give her a LITTLE hint of what's going on in that beautiful head of his!!
