Just some lighthearted fun for a change. I hope you enjoy!

“I’m afraid I’ll be sailing out at the Vineyard,” Myles said with a pompous swagger, “but you go on ahead and have a lovely time without me. You can tell me all about it on Monday.”

“Oh Myles – you can go sailing any time. It’s not every day that you get to see a member of this team win a prestigious honour like this,” Lucy protested. “I’m putting you down for one ticket…” A finely sculpted eyebrow arched inquisitively. “…unless you plan on bringing a date?”

His only response was a haughty glare before peacemaker Tara hastily jumped in. “Um, you can put me down for…” her eyes sought out Bobby before she rushed on over a little sigh. “One.”

“Stan the Man still out of town?” Bobby commiserated. “No worries – I’ll keep you out of trouble. You and Sue can count on me being there as well, Luce.”

“Great. That’s everybody but Myles and…Jack!” She pounced on him the second he walked into the bullpen. “How many tickets do you want? We thought we’d grab a table together.”

“Uh…” his eyes automatically sought Sue for clarification. “Do I want tickets?”

Laughing, she nodded. “I think you’d enjoy yourself.”

“Um…okay,” Jack paused and when no further information was forthcoming, he added, “How many tickets do I want?”

Sue shrugged. “Depends on whether you’re inviting someone to go with you.”

“Well?” Lucy stared at their team leader expectantly, pen poised over paper. “One ticket or two?”

“Is this something you’d enjoy going to?” Jack asked Sue, “I mean…just so I get the idea of what kind of date would like this…kind of event.”

“I definitely plan on going,” Sue assured him, “and I plan on enjoying myself too.”

“Good. Then I’ll take two tickets, Luce.”

Lucy frowned. “Two? You want two tickets?” Disapproval pursed her lips and soured her expression. “What do you want two tickets for?”

Jack grinned. “One for myself and one for my date.”

“Who’s your date?”

“Depends. What am I agreeing to go to?”

“Hope your date isn’t allergic to dog dander, Jack,” Tara chimed up from across the room.

“She’d likely asphyxiate in a matter of seconds,” Myles warned.

“And that would put a damper on our evening, wouldn’t it luv?” Bobby asked, blindsiding Tara with nudge and a wink.

“Definitely,” she grinned, winking back.

Jack gave Sue a lingering look. “She’s definitely not allergic to dogs,” he assured them.

“Thank God for small miracles, I suppose,” Lucy sighed as she divvied up the tickets, handing them out to every one present. She tucked Myles’ in his suit pocket when he refused to take one and then handed two tickets to Jack and was just about to give Sue hers when he beat Lucy to it.

Flourishing the ticket under Sue’s nose he asked, “Care to join me for an enjoyable evening at…” he glanced at the bold print in his hand, “…the Dog Days of Summer Gala Ball?”

“I’d be honored,” Sue said gratefully, “especially since my usual escort has another date that night.”

“I didn’t know you were seeing somebody,” Jack commented, feeling suddenly awkward.

“Seeing, eating, sleeping with him…they’re inseparable….but Levi’s standing her up for Francis,” Lucy interjected.

“But I don’t mind. It’s for a good cause. The proceeds for the event are going to several service dog foundations,” Sue added. “Levi’s the Honorary Master of Ceremonies.”

“And we’re all going to go along to show our support, aren’t we Myles?” Lucy asked pointedly.

“Why do I get the feeling my weekend is just about to go to the dogs?” he sighed in resignation.

“Well I can guarantee one thing,” Levi confided to Bunny. “Jack and Sue’s won’t.”

His favorite humans had danced around one another long enough. They’d been interrupted by terrorists and gangsters, ex-girlfriends and new boyfriends, and bumbling friends who had horrible timing. A huff of exasperation was aimed at the Harvard graduate still bemoaning the way he was roped into this affair. Two weeks ago, Myles Leland, III became the latest in a long line of well-meaning interruptors.

That day in the hallway, Levi just knew that Jack was about to confess everything. He knew if the dark eyed agent did, Sue would not be able to resist making a similar confession. He had been powerless to stop Myles’ interruption. He’d considered interception. One well placed bump between knee and thigh and the New Englander would have had an intimate encounter with the tile floor. Jack and Sue were both so wrapped up in one another, they’d never notice. But Sue still held his leash. One movement towards the blue eyed agent would have pulled her away from what could have been the most important moment in her life. So here they were, two weeks later and instead of planning a wedding they were discussing what color tuxedo would best match dog hair – not that it was shedding season. Just one more fact his poor ignorant human friends were unaware of.

He sighed heavily as he placed his chin on the chilly tile floor between his paws. Yep, he’d let them down. But not this time. This time, Levi the Wonderdog would be in control of the situation. And he’d have help of the four-legged kind should well meaning friends of the human kind bumble again. The 2005 Dog Days of Summer Gala Ball would go down in history as the day a dog made the match of the century.

Just one question; is the interruption Levi is thinking about the one in Endings and Beginings?

Yep, Lynn, I'm sure this is happening after Endings and Beginnings. Because of this bit:

I'm sorry guys, I should have made a note in the first post. Yes, this story does take place two weeks after Endings and Beginnings.

“Surveillance,” Levi whispered to Bunny as the team settled into the morning routine. “That’s the key to a successful operation.” And he was already a step ahead of the game.

He didn’t need to concentrate on learning their routine. Quite the contrary. After nearly four years with Sue and the team, he knew that as well as he knew their scent. What he needed to concentrate on was their dog traits. Every human had them – they were just blind to them. He, on the other hand, could spot them a mile off – if he concentrated. He needed to know if he were dealing with herders, guarders, fighters or a mixed bag. Then he could better pair the human with the canine at the Gala should he need to run interference for his favorite couple.

“So,” Bobby whispered to Myles. Levi’s ears flipped towards the coffee machine across the room. “You think Sparky is finally going to confess to our dear Sue?”

“I hope so,” Myles groaned. His eyes darted to the dark haired agent already in the throes of Sue-gazing. “That New York scare a couple of weeks ago may have been just the thing to speed up Turtleboy.”

“He has been bolder with her since then,” Bobby admitted. “I just hope it will be enough.”

It will be, Levi grinned. Especially if I have anything to do with it. Today, he would take notes on the canine behaviors he observed. Tonight, he’d discuss them with his friends at the dog park. Tomorrow, phase one of Operation Every Dog has His Day would begin.

Oh, Kim, I laughed out loud when I read that part! I grew up with Border Collies. We had one that would walk up and down the fence of our chicken yard, "herding" the chickens from outside the pen . . . Poor dog - he really needed something to herd! hehe.gif

Thank you all for reading! I'm glad you are enjoying this. I must begin this post with the following disclaimer that will carry through the next post or two: The opinions, beliefs and viewpoints expressed by the author do not necessarily reflect the opinions, beliefs and viewpoints of Levi or the dog population at large.

Monday mornings usually meant a grumpy Myles showing off his latest battle scar in the War of Webber Aggression, Baseball according to Bobby or Tara’s Tales from the Dating Crypt. But with their latest investigation wrapping up in the wee hours of Sunday morning, laughter and conversation was replaced by scratching pencils and shuffling papers. It was actually quite advantageous for Levi. With no donuts to distract or paper airplanes to chase, he could concentrate on plucking the canine traits from the garden of human ones. Who to start with?

“You stay here,” he whispered to Bunny as he pushed his pal under the edge of Sue’s desk where there was less likelihood of being trampled. After all, it was going to take all his powers of discernment to pick up on the dog beneath the human. He didn’t have time watch out for his friend and the team. With only six days to prepare for the final showdown, the team must take precedence. He smiled as Bunny offered an understanding nod before flattening herself on the floor.

Rising, he slowly stretched each leg, careful to follow his normal routine so as not to raise suspicion. Scanning the Bullpen, he carefully considered who should be the first subject. D was in his office down the hall. When the team was busy like they were today, he’d amble down the hallway for a visit just to stretch his legs – and, if he happened to pick up a tidbit of FBI gossip along the way, all the better. But it was too early for that trip. He glanced at the clock. He had at least twenty minutes before his departure would not wave a red flag to the others.

Myles? Nope. He needed to warm up a little before he tackled that one. Bobby? Nope. He’d just pulled a granola bar from his hidden snack stash. Too much temptation. Jack? Nope. He already knew the guy pretty well. The special agent was loyal and compassionate, protective and willing to give the ultimate sacrifice if it meant protecting his Sue. Jack Hudson was a Golden through and through – right down to the dark chocolate eyes that radiated love to a woman who must also be blind as well as deaf.

He looked up at the woman sitting beside him. Sue? Nope. He shared a bedroom with her after all. Besides, there was only one dog fit to pair with Sue. While he took care of Jack, Gracie would take care of Sue. Gracie was an elegant Collie. If Jack was the human version of him, Sue was the human version of Francis’ dog. Sweet, kind, intelligent, a little too independent sometimes, Grace was a fine dog. And very discerning. She didn’t allow every Tom, Dick and Rover sniff her wagging end – unlike Nikita. His tail shivered with disgust as he thought of how he’d allowed himself to fall under the chocolate’s spell.

His head shook, clearing his mind of the image of the seductress. He had to focus. With a soft sigh, he continued his quest. Tara? Nope. She was bumping the fuzzy end of her pen against her temple – a sure sign she was too deep in thought to allow the dog beneath to poke through. Lucy? Ah that’s the one. Easy enough since he spent almost as much time with her as he did with Sue, close enough to slip out for his visit with D, that was where he’d start. Padding softly across the room, he settled beside Lucy’s desk, cocking his head to one side and narrowing his eyes as he studied the rotor.

A soft smile and compassionate brown eyes glanced his way. That cheerful chuckle mean just for him trilled across her lips. “Good morning, buddy.” She leaned down and scratched that little patch of fur just behind his ear. He would have gladly sat there all day if she’d just…Drat! The phone jostled for her attention. “Sorry pal,” she sighed as she abandoned the scratching to reach for the handset. “Surveillance. Randy I don’t have time for this right now,” she barked into the receiver. “I know but…”

Her hands moved almost as fast as her lips did, flipping through the stacks of folders on her desk. She always knew right where everything was. She kept things in line. She herded the team like… There it was! Staring him in the face the whole time. Lucy Dobbs was a herder at heart. But not just any herder – a strong, elegant one. Think Levi! Think! Australian Shepherd! That’s it! Kind, loved to play, but would nip at your heels if you got out of line, Lucy was an Aussie in human clothing. “One down and five to go!” he yelled to Bunny in triumph.

Kim I love this - I'm feeling rather Australian Shepherd like in my life these days! Our old dog was part heeler and she used to herd the kids around - it was so fun!

Levi talking to his bunny reminds me of The Velveteen Rabbit.

Looking forward to more!

Oh Kim . . . that was wonderful! Lucy is a herder. I guess I am, too. I never look organized, but somehow I'm the "finder of lost things" at our house, and in my workplace. How funny! And I, too, loved the care Levi is taking with Bunny. Woudn't want Bunny to get lost or trampled!! hehe.gif

I'm going over the dog groups in my mind (used to attend dog shows when my brother showed Saint Bernards and Great Pyrenees...once upon a time, many moons ago) and trying to decide what type and breed the others will turn out to be. It'll be fun to see if your, ummm... LEVI'S, opinion matches up with what I come up with!

Herders are part of the Working Group, so that fits Luce perfectly! Remember in the first epi, she told Sue that she was the one who really worked because she was the rotor and kept everything going (I paraphrase).

Oh, I gotta go figure out the others!

With Lucy’s inner dog revealed, he could move on to the next subject. Glancing at the clock, he groaned. Ten minutes. What could he possibly achieve in ten minutes? Allowing his tongue to squirt out of the corner of his mouth, Levi scanned the room again, skipping over Myles. While the New Englander might not take a lifetime, he’d certainly take more than ten minutes. Bobby was still munching away on his granola bar. A grin creased his mouth as movement from Tara’s desk caught his attention. The yellow fuzzy end was not twirling aimlessly in the air. She was relaxed but still distracted enough to be oblivious to his observations. Now was the perfect time for Tara’s inner dog to peek through.

Standing up, he stretched again before moseying across to Tara’s desk. Easing to the floor, he wiggled his way between the computer wires and her desk until his head rested just under the edge of the desk. Not prone to being a Peeping Tom – he left that to his feline counterparts, he was glad that Tara was wearing pants today. He’d hate to embarrass both her and himself should he catch a glimpse of her underthings. Heck, he turned his head every time Sue sorted laundry. After all, there were certain things a dog should not be privy to – at least that’s the advice his mom and pop imparted.

He’d actually thought Tara would be almost as easy as Lucy, but he was wrong. This was one complicated computer whiz. Laying his head between his paws with a exasperated huff, he slowly cleared his mind – not an easy feat with the coffee pot humming and the copier in Randy’s office spitting out memos by the gross. Added to that, three doors down Rachel ad Holly were discussing Holly’s latest date with Dierk from the lab. The description of the meal alone was enough to drive him to distraction. But as he forced himself to concentrate on the perky blonde with the penchant for unusual writing instruments, these distractions slowly faded to nothingness.

Hound – that was a sure bet. After all, she was a natural born hunter, finding event the slightest scent of the criminal in cyberspace. But what kind? She was as accurate as a Bloodhound but as fast as a Redbone. She was docile and shy, great with people with a tendency to allow others to clamber all over her without even whimpering in pain. He’d seen that trait firsthand. Being a dog, he was often privy to information humans were not. And being too much of a gentleman to gossip, he kept much of it to himself. He knew what happened between Bobby and Tara. While the Australian had been oblivious to the pain he was inflicting, Levi had seen it, his heart aching for her. For the first time since meeting Bobby, he felt like biting the man in the backside just so he’d experience a little bit of the hurt he’d inflicted. Still, Tara never let it show.

Perhaps he’d just encountered his first mixed bag. Part Bloodhound, part Redbone and pure Tara. To him it was a perfect, beautifully graceful combination. His eyes darted to where Bobby was bent over his desk, his pen scratching against the carbonless forms. When this operation concerning Jack and Sue was over, he definitely needed to work on getting the drongo to see the beauty beneath the brain.

Thanks for reading, guys! You are wonderful!

Not a cable was disturbed as Levi backed out of his surveillance position. With Tara analyzed, Phase One was half way to completion. He glanced at the clock as an easy grin curled his mouth away from his lolling tongue. It was time for his visit with D. At this rate, he’d have this pack pegged before lunch.

He slinked from the Bullpen, breaking into a happy trot once his tail cleared the doorway. The halls were quiet with no Randy in sight. With D’s open door policy, he wouldn’t even have wood blocking him from his next subject. If things ran this smoothly at the Gala, Jack and Sue would be married in a week with a pup on the way before Halloween. However, he didn’t fall off the dog catcher’s truck yesterday. He knew full well that where Jack and Sue – and the rest of the team for that matter were concerned – things never ran smoothly. That was why he was taking such care in planning. He wanted to have every possible angle covered.

“Hey there, fella,” D grinned in greeting. “Things too quiet in the Bullpen for ya?”

“Humph.”

“Well said, Levi,” D chuckled. “Tell you what.” The supervisor scooted away from the desk, gesturing for him to enter. The dark agent bent towards him, one elbow on his knee the other hand reaching to scratch that eternally itchy spot behind floppy ears. “You can stay in here with me for a while.” The scratching was interrupted when his friend reached for his desk drawer. Levi couldn’t stifle the shudder that passed through him as the rollers squeaked in the track. The man might have walked off the cover of GQ, but his drawers needed WD-40.

With a quick flick of the wrist, something pale and odiferous sailed through the air, landing in the middle of the pillow D kept in the corner just for him. “Take a load off and chew on that for a while.”

Levi nodded his thanks and padded off towards the corner. A happy sigh resonated in the wagging tail as he saw the rawhide bone – chicken flavored to boot. Of all the temptations, this was the one that would not lead him to distraction. Just like humans who could walk and chew gum at the same time, he could chew and observe. This was definitely proving to be a lucky day; one of many since Sue found him and then they found the team.

Picking up the bone, he flopped down into the downy softness of the pillow. It wasn’t fancy like a lot of the dog beds out there. Quite the contrary. Stitches were uneven and the patchwork colors didn’t quite match. But he wouldn’t trade it for all the dog treats in the world. Every fiber was filled with love – hand sewn by Tanya with Donna’s help. While he would never admit it to Sue, it had been his favorite Christmas present their second year with the team. Now, it would not only serve to cushion the cold, hard tile, but as the perfect surveillance spot for this particular subject.

While D labored over the paperwork on his desk, he still managed to wink at Levi every so often, assuring him that his presence was welcomed in the office. This family man was not boisterous or rambunctious like Bobby. Nor was he stuck up and self-serving like Myles, though the Bostonian had mellowed over the last couple of years. He, like Jack, was loyal and protective, thinking of the team as an extension of his own family. But there was wisdom behind the dark eyes that came from the experience of – not only age, but life. Life where the mortgage had to be balanced with the cost of braces; where no matter how much you wanted to scream and cry about the unfairness of a life lost before it had a chance to live, you had to hold it together for your family. You had to be the strength that anchored your wife, the hand that wiped tears and the heart that threatened to shatter each time you had to discipline the children you created with the woman who dwelled in your soul.

The jingle of the telephone interrupted Levi’s thoughts. When D picked up the receiver, there was a bark in the usually calm voice. That’s when he saw it, that flash of canine beneath the flesh. German Shepherd. That’s what D was, calm and docile, but willing to attack when provoked. He was the true guardian of the group.

With his tail thumping lightly against the pillow, he felt like a puppy again. Five down and two to…What was that sticking out of the manila folder on the corner of D’s desk? It looked like every other piece of letterhead he’d seen in his tenure with the Bureau. Then why was it almost calling to him? Easing the rawhide bone to the pillow, he stood and softly padded across the room. With D’s back turned and his attention focused on the person on the other end of the phone line, Levi had a chance to get a good, close look at the paper. His heart almost catapulted from his chest as he realized what was within teeth’s reach. It was the answer to more than a few prayers – human and canine. Gently clutching it in his teeth, he backed away from D’s desk, easing it from the stack without upsetting more than the dust. Padding from the office, he hurried towards the Bullpen. If he worked carefully and quickly when he got back, he could place it in Bunny’s care. When he and Sue started to leave for the evening, he could put it in Sue’s purse. That way, it’d be unseen, but handy should the need arise. It looked as if every dog was indeed going to have his day.

More later,

German Shepherd fits D exactly!! He is definitely the guardian of their team, looking out for each member!! I love how he has his office set up for Levi - with the pillow and treats at hand!!!

So, what is this mysterious paper Levi has found???

If things ran this smoothly at the Gala, Jack and Sue would be married in a week with a pup on the way before Halloween. However, he didn’t fall off the dog catcher’s truck yesterday. He knew full well that where Jack and Sue – and the rest of the team for that matter were concerned – things never ran smoothly. That was why he was taking such care in planning. He wanted to have every possible angle covered.
I love the way Levi thinks, especially the "married in a week with a pup on the way before Halloween"! chair.gif cheerleader.gif
But, I just have to quote another one that had me LolLolLolLol.gif LolLolLolLol.gif

The man might have walked off the cover of GQ, but his drawers needed WD-40.
And I have to say a lump formed in my throat at Levi's thoughts about Tanya's hand-sewn pillow and tears flowed freely at his analysis of D having wisdom and strength. A beautiful, perfect observation of D that has me crying.gif

German Shepherd, the guardian...a perfect fit for D! Now, what is on that paper? If its what I think it is, shouldn't he be smuggling it into Jack's inbox instead of Sue's purse? It must not be what I'm thinking! And I can't wait to see what breed Myles is!

This is another wonderful story, Kim! clapgirl.gif

Oh, and one more thing: I was pretty sure Myles' interruption Levi was thinking about was Endings and Beginnings, for the reason Kav stated. Its just that, sometimes my brain likes to confirm its thoughts b/c so many times it goes off in a different direction than everyone else and I end up confused.gif
and get even more confused.gif
trying to figure out why I'm confused.gif LolLolLolLol.gif

The Shepherd was indeed an excellent choice for D. I hope that Levi's plan does indeed see Jack and Sue married within a week. Now please tell us more about this mysterious paper.

I'm glad you guys are having as much fun reading this as I am writing it! Of course, the fact that you are enjoying it makes the writing even more fun.

Levi loped down the hallway, the detour around the biggest obstacle facing the success of Operation Every Dog held carefully between his teeth. He skidded to a stop just as he reached the Bullpen door. If he was caught red-handed with the evidence now, it could topple his well constructed plan.

It wasn’t like he didn’t want Jack and Sue to know. That was never the question. Not only did he want them to know, they would need to know. The question was timing. If they found it too soon – before they admitted their feelings, there would always be nibbling doubts surrounding the admission. While it would definitely make things easier if he just plopped it on Jack’s desk, or better yet, dropped it right into the dark eyed agent’s lap, it wouldn’t be in the best interest of the longevity of the relationship. No, this way – though harder – would be more productive in the long run.

He slid his side along the wall, inching his way toward the door. Once he reached the jamb, he eased his muzzle around the corner – just like he’d seen Jack, Myles and Bobby do with their guns when they checked a structure for suspects. He sniffed, waited, then sniffed again. When his nose didn’t encounter the citrusy scent of human, he slipped more of his head through the opening, easing forward until he could see inside. How did Jack handle these situations? A cocky smile parted his lips as images of previous takedowns flitted through his mind. Spot the target. Scan the area to assess the situation. Execute.

His eyes darted to the edge of Sue’s desk, his heart thumping in his ears. Whew. Bunny was still where he’d told her to stay – for once. If he could manage it, he’d have wiped his brow with his paw. But he couldn’t risk throwing himself off balance and slamming into the wall. That would attract attention quicker than Jack jogging shirtless through a sorority picnic. Instead, he opted for a slow, soft exhale of the air he’d held captive in his lungs. Target Spotted? Check!

Slowly he scanned the room, starting with the area just above Bunny. Sue’s forehead was drawn towards her nose as she stared into the computer monitor. Her index finger gently rolled the scroll wheel, stopping occasionally to lift and lend aid to the other hand moving across the keyboard. His eyes darted to their roommate. Lucy’s finely shaped eyebrows were like they were doing jumping jacks as she scanned the pages of reports on her desk – up as she read, down and drawn together as she corrected. His eyes reversed direction, sweeping back across Sue and Bunny until they rested on the dark haired agent. Jack’s eyes drifted across the pages lying on his desk, his right hand moving occasionally to touch his pen to the page, scratching quickly before lifting to hang suspended between his fingers. Levi noted the granola bar had disappeared as his gaze drifted to Bobby. Seriousness dimmed the ever present dimples as he poured over the page held in his hand. Myles’ pen moved as if it was writing the great American novel, ending each line with a slight flourish. Tara was entranced by the bright blue-green glow of her computer screen. Area secure? Check!

He tucked his tail tightly between his hind legs and laid his ears flat against his head. His front paw shook slightly as he raised it, prepared to set it down across the threshold. Someone cleared his throat, papers shuffled and Levi froze, feeling more like a sitting duck than a golden retriever. Risking detection, he dared to move his eyes – almost collapsing in relief when he discovered the team was still focused on their reports.

He squirted across the room like a Mack truck was bearing down on him at full throttle. He skidded to a silent stop beside Bunny, quickly dropping to the floor, the page falling from his mouth to rest between his paws. He chin landed softly on top of it, shielding it from eyes that may have been aroused by his lightening flash movement. Execution? Check!

“That was close,” he whispered in Bunny’s ear after a few eventless moments. “I’d better do the rest of my surveillance from here. Too much more movement and I’ll alert them for sure.” He lifted his chin from the page. “But first, I want you to keep this safe for me until we start home tonight, okay?”

Bunny nodded slightly.

“Good. Now hold really still while I slip this under here like so.” Taking his nose he gently nudged the page beneath her tummy, praying the rest of the team didn’t hear her soft giggles as he accidently brushed past her ticklish spot. “Sorry,” he mumbled.

He glanced at the clock, a whiffling breath disturbing the dust on the floor as he sighed. This surveillance stuff was harder than he thought. But it did make the morning go faster. He had just two more to peg: Bobby and Myles. Now, if they would just cooperate, he could have the pack categorized before he was distracted by the rumble of hunger bubbling from his middle.

More later
