I tried posting this once already, but the computer ate it. Long story short, we arrived safe and sound despite the traffic and I found a very jumpy wi-fi connection.
Doesn't really matter, though considering this is the LAST POST!
Tara looked like an angel as she twirled about on the dance floor. Her floor-length sweeping gown skimmed lightly around her ankles and her silver-shoed feet seemed like they’d never touched the floor as Bobby held her close and they swayed gently to the music.
In a sea of white, black and a few red dresses spotted throughout the room, Tara stood out. The gown was strapless, the fitted bodice embellished with tonal sequins that just glittered underneath the mood lighting. The flowing chiffon skirt featured an ombre` pattern of gorgeously shifting tones from rich purple to a brilliant aqua which were echoed with a simple sash at her waist.
Lucy had never seen another dress like it and it certainly showed how unique—but still so beautiful—Tara’s style could be. Her jaw had literally dropped to the floor when the tech whiz had first caught her eye. She didn’t recognize her at first and when she finally realized who it was, she couldn’t help but be shocked.
It was obvious that Bobby liked it as well. When the two of them entered the ballroom arm-in-arm, Lucy could clearly see how Bobby’s eyes sparkled in that special way. It was a look he only spared for Tara these days.
She smiled and took a sip from her champagne flute. Love definitely seemed like it was floating throughout the room tonight.
It had been obvious in Jack and Sue’s eyes. Special Agent Hudson had barely been able to peel his eyes off of his date the entire night. It was as if he was afraid to blink to find her—a vision of beauty in crimson red—a dream.
Sue’s dress was absolutely stunning. The silk flowed down to her toes, but did not hide the matching strappy shoes that showed off her crimson toenails. The bodice was an empire waist with a sweetheart neckline, both embellished with glittering beads. The biggest surprise of the dress, though, was the back. It was open with a strap running across the width of her back, revealing the slender yet still tonal muscles.
The rotor felt so proud and so happy she’d talked Sue into buying the dress. It definitely seemed to make a statement; to both the attendees and to her escort.
The evening had been a complete success. Levi was honored for his services as an FBI service dog and as an added bonus from his friends at the ASPCA, a special gift for rescuing the five little kittens. And it was definitely a gift that only a dog could love: the largest dog bone Lucy had ever seen.
Her eyes continued to float around the room. Donna was gorgeous in her simple black evening gown, the two having just come back from a family vacation to help the rest of the team celebrate Levi’s honor. Plus, when Donna had set eyes on the bundle of kittens, she just knew that they had to try to take one home. After all, Tanya had been staying out of trouble lately and that was a definitely improvement to the weekly disaster they’d usually find themselves trying to get her out of. The girl deserved a reward.
“Bobby, I still can’t believe you did this. I don’t know what to say,” Tara was practically in tears as she hugged the little runt close and the little girl cuddled into her while she and Bobby walked back to the table.
He shrugged, “It’s nothing, Tara luv. Besides, you haven’t stopped talking about this little girl for days, so I figured I’d help you out and give you a better chance.”
“I don’t know how to thank you.”
He didn’t say anything for a second as he considered just what a ‘thank you’ might entail. A grin slowly spread across his lips until his dimples became visible. “I can think of something.”
Her eyes lit up. “Anything.”
She was surprised when his cheeks flushed lightly with embarrassment. “Dinner with me? Tomorrow night?”
Her cheeks tinted lightly with color, but she didn’t hesitate to answer. “Okay,” was the only answer she gave and that only made Bobby grin wider.
Lucy’s eyes looked like they were about to pop out of her head. Bobby’s grin wasn’t the only one that got wider. Her smile was so wide that her cheeks started to hurt. Another couple struck by cupid’s arrows. She couldn’t be happier.
Well, okay, that was a lie. She knew she could be happier; much happier and the man she had in mind to make her happy probably didn’t even realize was still in the room. She rolled her eyes at herself. Well, maybe she was being a bit hard on herself, but as soon as Myles discovered who Melinda really was, he hadn’t said much. And now that he was sitting barely three feet away from her, she didn’t know what to say.
“Myles?” she asked. At least it was a start and it seemed to gain his attention from all of the other attendees, pulling his cool blue eyes in her direction. She chewed nervously at her bottom lip. “I’m sorry about the whole Melinda thing. I didn’t think you’d attend if you really knew she was a Labrador.”
His smile surprised her. “It’s okay. I’ve known about it for a while.” His grin grew wider at her look of shock.
“You… you knew? How?”
He chuckled, his shoulders lightly shaking. “Jack let me in on the gag the other night while the three of us were at the pool hall, so I just played along for the fun of it.”
Her jaw dropped for the second time that night. The night they were all at the pool hall? That was the day that the kittens were found… but he’d already started acting… differently around her. “I don’t understand.”
His eyes were soft and his smile grew warm as his hand reached out and set softly upon hers. “I had other motives for wanting to play along. I wanted to get closer to you, Luce.” It was an honest reply and one he felt he could no longer hold back. His feelings for this woman were too strong to ignore any longer. “I know I was a cad in the past, but I feel like we’ve grown much closer than we even were before. And I would be honored if you gave me another chance… after all, you were right. I did fall in love with Melinda.” That was why he was adopting the old girl.
Melinda was actually a retired service dog who was looking for a new home. Some place stable with a good amount to protect and it didn’t hurt that Myles had a backyard that any puppy would drool over. It had been getting kind of lonely in that big empty house anyway. He needed a companion; he just hoped that he would gain a second one.
“I don’t know what to say.” She felt like crying. She wanted to jump into his arms and shout ‘of course I’ll give you another chance, Myles’, but she couldn’t be that eager. If she’d learned anything about interrogational tactics, it helped to make the subject sweat.
“’Yes’ would probably be a good start,” he teased, though he grinned confidently.
“You did all of this for me? Why?”
He leaned in closer, bridging the seemingly gaping gap between them. A shiver ran down his spine as he started into her wide eyes. She was so beautiful. “Because I lost you once for my own foolish actions and I want to make it right.”
She smiled. “I’d like that, Myles.”
He could feel a ‘but’ coming on. “But?”
“But I just have one question.” She didn’t wait for him to ask what kind of question she had to ask. If she didn’t ask now, she would never get it out. “If your ulterior motives were to get closer to me… um… what were your original motives?”
He leaned back in his seat as the question hit him squarely in the chest. “Ah… well… truthfully?” he found himself asking and was only answer by a nod from her. “Blackmail.”
“Huh?”
He rolled his eyes and took in a deep breath. He wasn’t going to waist more than one on this stupid story. “Jack made me promise that if I agreed not to tell you that he blabbed the whole Melinda thing, he would tell me something very important.”
Her brows came together in confusion. “Which would be?”
He cleared his throat as he motioned with the index finger of the hand that still hadn’t left hers toward a pair of double French doors leading out to a beautifully gardened lanai. And just outside those doors, they could both see as Jack got down on one knee before Sue, holding out the most gorgeous diamond solitaire that she’d ever seen. Even from as far away as she was, she could tell how exquisite it was just by the way it glittered in the moonlight.
Lucy couldn’t quite catch what was being said, but from the gestures both of them made and the hug and very passionate kiss that soon followed, she had an idea of how the scene had played out.
“I don’t believe it,” was all she was able to say as he lips slowly curled into a smile.
“Me neither. I thought it was just a ruse to get me to keep my mouth shut, but I suppose I was wrong.” His grin was wide, though. To him he was still getting the better end of the deal.
It was the Dog Days of Summer, but the time of stagnation had officially come to an end.
