Chapter One
Who would’ve thought that my sweet Abigail would be getting married today.
Abigail was a tiny baby, born one autumn morning where the leaves were turning colors. The leaves on the trees were red, while the grass had sprinkles of yellow and brown on its floor. While I held that tiny little life in my hands, I was overcome with joy and determination. My daughter was going to live.
The doctors told her mother and I that Abigail would never be able to see or hear for the rest of her life. Being born early, her eyes weren’t developed enough to see anything. With steely determination from both of us, we knew Abigail would live a normal life.
By the time Abigail was a teenager, she decided with our full backing, that she was going to have the surgery that would correct her vision.
At fifteen, on a clear autumn day just like the day she was born, Abigail was able to see the red leaves in the trees, the blue in the sky, grass sprinkled with yellow and brown on its floor, for the first time. I looked at Sue and saw tears in her eyes. Our daughter could see.
At 19, Abigail met the love of her life, my best friend’s son and my godchild, Jackson Manning. Bobby and Tara immediately asked Sue and Abigail along with Jackson how to sign in American Sign Language.
As the days went by, I saw her flourish into the woman standing before me today in her white gown that fit her like a glove. Sue and I agreed that we would give her away together, seeing as she was our only daughter.
As the wedding came to a close, I felt Sue’s hand on mine. We knew that we were not losing a daughter but gaining a son as well.
Two years went by, now our beautiful daughter was in trouble.
-----
Sue and I were in the back yard planting our flowers and vegetable garden when the call came.
Abigail was missing.
