Tara wasn’t quite sure exactly how it happened.

And she had been jogging in the park on her lunch break.

And she’d run into him.

Bumped into his arm and sent hot dog and coffee flying. Her eyes had widened and she’d hurried over to the hot dog cart to get napkins before returning to his side, dabbing and wiping at the stain that was sure to form from the mustard. “I’m so sorry… really I am…” She babbled at him, nervously, making more of a mess than had been there previously.

“Tara…”

His hand on hers stilled her movements and she looked up at him, his eyes twinkling green at her.

Green was such a contrast to the day… her mind wandered. The sky was a bright vibrant blue… the leaves on the trees golden with their changes. And yet what stood out the most as she stood gazing into the eyes of Bobby Manning… was the gorgeous green of his eyes.

“What?” She blinked at him, trying to clear her mind to make herself focus.

He was touching her.

She still remembered the brief touch of his lips on hers. She’d been elated that night. Unsure of what to say but wanting to spill her heart to him… both of them nervous after he’d kissed her. The kiss had seemed like a natural progression. They’d had a lovely time… only then… he remembered how much he loved Darcy and they’d had a disastrous talk in the park where she had claimed her own devotion to Stanley.

Oh how she regretted that.

But he’d wounded her. She would have claimed devotion to Randy Pitts if she thought that it would save her some heart ache.

Only then… Darcy didn’t want him and cast him off like a child casts off a teddy bear that they think they are too mature for… to old to derive pleasure from any longer. Tara would dispute that as often as she needed to. She often … still… curled up with her old friend Charley.

“Tara.” Bobby said again, reaching to tilt her chin up to look at him. “Where’d you go?” He asked. “I swear, you were here a second ago but now you’ve been miles away.”

Tara shrugged. “No where in particular.” She said while her brain helpfully supplied the mental image that she was returning to her front porch seven months ago. “I’m really sorry…” She said again, taking another swipe at his shirt with her napkin.

“Tara…” Bobby chuckled, taking both of her hands into his for safekeeping. “It’s all right. I wasn’t paying attention and probably walked right in front of you. But you can stop… I can change my shirt when I go back into the office.” He gave her hands a gentle squeeze.

He really needed her to stop before she awakened things within him that he didn’t feel he had any right to feel with her gentle touches with the napkin.

“Oh… all right.” Tara shrugged. “Let me at least buy you a brand new lunch.” She said, motioning to the hot dog stand.

He grinned at her, his eyes twinkling as he let her hands go. “Well… if you insist.” he teased, as he followed her over to the stand and they got in line so she could replace his lunch.

Whooohhhhooooo! chair.gif This looks to have all the makings of a romanticifily stupendiferous story. (don't mind me I'm in a Tigger mood this morning). So she ran smack into him, eh? Or could this be considered a chance encounter? And why, pray tell, dearest Bobby, do you feel certain things shouldn't be awakened? batting eyelashes.gif I hope mione is able to talk some sense into you.

“You know, Tara…” Bobby said, taking a bite of his hot dog.

She raised an eyebrow at him, waiting for him to chew and swallow before he finished his sentence. She took her own bite, waiting.

He took a swig of his soda before he smiled. “I never took you for a hot dog kind of girl.” He commented.

“Excuse me? Just what woman in our office actually agrees with you about chili cheese dogs over that foo foo French place? Or the Garden club?” She asked, taking another bite.

He frowned. “Oh… right.” He shrugged, continuing to eat.

Tara reached across and stole some potato chips out of the bag at his side.

She sighed, munching on the consoling bite of the vinegar and sting of the salt from his salt and vinegar potato chips.

“What?” He asked her, taking his own chips as he watched her pensive look deepen.

“Am I really that invisible?” She asked him, studying him as she picked at the bun around her hot dog. He frowned. “You know… so invisible that you’d forget that I join you in your chili dog quest?”

“No Tara… it’s just been a while, you know?” He tried to play innocent to avoid where this conversation was possibly going. “I’m sorry… I never meant to imply that I have no idea that you’re with us.”

“Hmm… I suppose that I could consider this even punishment for getting mustard all over you.” She commented, glancing at his eyes for a moment before she diverted them. She cast her gaze every where but at him, drinking in the glorious fall day.

It was clear… beautiful… not that cold… and the leaves really were a gorgeous gold color. Tara adored fall afternoons like this.

“I told you that you were forgiven for that.” Bobby protested. He handed her the chip bag. “Here… eat these. I’ve had enough of them.”

They fell silent as they ate, each drawn into their own world while they chewed.

Bobby reached for her wax paper and napkins when she finished and tugged them gently out of her hands so that he could go throw them away.

Tara watched him go to the garbage can and back. “I suppose we should head back.” She said, standing for a moment to stretch.

“Yeah.” He agreed. “Thanks for my new lunch.” He said, smiling at her.

“You’re welcome.” She said, peering at the stain on his shirt. “I have a laundry pen thingy in my desk drawer. Goodness knows how handy that comes in when I spill my coffee every morning.” She said, looking up into his eyes.

Oh… big mistake.

“Thanks. I’ll have to come get it from you.”

“No problem.” She said, reaching out to touch his arm for a moment.

Oooh… even bigger mistake.

She could feel the sheer masculinity radiating off of him and it seemed to be weaving it’s influence around her even more since she’d let her hand touch his shirt.

“Tara…” Bobby said, his voice low and husky as he studied her, fascinated by the way her cheeks flushed a pale pink and her ears seemed to turn red. He was powerless to resist the alluring pull he found in her eyes when she looked up at him and he bent his head, kissing her with more feeling than he had back on her porch.

I love Tara's determination to not look up...can totally see how difficult an objective that can be but now I want to know what her reaction is going to be!

Tara pulled away slightly, looking at him with a dazed expression. “Bobby…” She stopped talking when he put his finger across her lips.

“I don’t regret that.” He told her. “I’d like to do it again if you don’t mind.” He moved his finger from her lips and waited for a response from her.

Tara tilted her head to look at him, hardly daring to believe she’d really heard him say that… barely daring to breathe. “Pinch me…” She whispered.

Bobby frowned slightly but grasped a bit of the skin on her arm and gave it a little pinch.

“OW!” Tara’s eyes went wide and she stared at him. “Not a dream… oh dear Lord, not a dream…” She mumbled, taking in a deep gasping breath. Her head spun when she inhaled a lungful of Tropical Delight.

“Tara…” He asked, his eyes concerned as he reached to steady her.

“I look like crap… I had a hot dog and chips I taste like crap too… oh no… oh dear…” She frantically reached up, touching her hair… as she suspected it had suffered a bit from her lunchtime jog before she ran into him.

“You’re beautiful.” Bobby said, his eyes sweeping her form from head to toe. “I like it when a woman can not worry about what she looks like when she’s working out. And I tasted just as bad, we ate the same thing for lunch, luv.”

Her cheeks flushed pink again.

He reached to caress one of them with his hand. “Like I said, beautiful.” He murmured. “May I …”

“What does it mean, Bobby?” She asked, her eyes meeting his and holding his gaze steady. “If I let you kiss me again, what does it mean for us?”

“It means you’d better be having dinner with me tonight.” She raised an eyebrow at him. “So we can talk about everything it could mean for us.”

Tara smiled softly. “I’d be delighted to have dinner with you tonight.” She said, moving just a smidge closer so that she could wrap her arms around his neck, pulling him slightly closer to her as she moved up on her tiptoes. “Kiss me again, Bobby…” she whispered to him.

“With pleasure, luv.” He said back, closing the distance between them and capturing her lips with his. He was pleased… thrilled actually when her lips parted slightly with a soft moan that sounded like his name and he plundered her mouth with his tongue.

“We’re going to be late.” Tara pulled away from him reluctantly, her eyes meeting his.

Kissing Bobby Manning was a definite plus to her lunch hour. She smiled at him. “And in spite of what you might actually think… I’d like to not be dressed this way at my desk.”

He grinned at her. “And I have to see you at your desk to get that laundry pen thingy that you offered me.” he teased.

“That’s right… so it’s off to the shower for me and you to your desk so that I can get that for you.” Tara exhaled slowly. “And I’m definitely hoping that nothing pops up this afternoon so that we can leave for dinner at a decent time.” She said softly, thrilled when he reached for her hand as they started to walk back towards the building.

“Me too, Tara.” Bobby said, looking down at her as he considered the feel of her hand tucked securely in his. He’d never really noticed how small her hand was, feeling the strength in her hand. “Your hands are amazing.” He blurted, feeling his ears turn red at the observation.

“Amazing, eh?” Tara raised an eyebrow at him before smiling softly. “And you, Mr. Manning haven’t actually been privy to the things these hands can do.” She said, deliberately keeping her eyes locked with his.

He smirked. “Do I dare hope that I might find out a little more about what your hands are capable of after dinner?” He asked cheekily.

“Just what sort of woman do you take me for?” She pretended to be aghast at the suggestion. “I do declare, I could never act that way on a first date.” She protested.

“But it’s not technically our first date.” He countered.

“Well…” She wavered ever so slightly, battling to keep from grinning at him. “Technically it is because that concert wasn’t supposed to be a date.” She pointed out as they paused at the crosswalk.

“Hmm…” He pursed his lips. “You’re right.”

“Exactly.”

“Any chance lunch is a first date and dinner is the second?” Bobby asked hopefully.

“Not a chance, mister.” Tara shook her head. “What sort of woman do you take me for that would do that sort of thing on a second date?” She teased, laughing as he rolled his eyes before they crossed the street.

“Third date?” He tried.

Tara merely laughed and stretched up to kiss him as they approached the building so that she could run down to the locker room and shower before she went back up to the bullpen. “Behave yourself on the way upstairs… I’ll be there in 20 minutes.”

“I can’t wait.” He said, stealing another quick kiss before she could run away from him.

Bobby couldn’t keep his eyes off of her the rest of the afternoon. He’d waited for her to re-appear at her desk and then went over to borrow her laundry pen to remove the mustard stain from his shirt… but after that, he didn’t think that he got any work done, he was too busy watching Tara.

He felt his ears turn red when she would catch him looking and she would smile at him while her own cheeks blushed a pale pink before she looked away again.

As though the clock would move any faster with his gaze on it, that became his saving grace. When she’d catch him, he’d shift his gaze over to the clock on the wall. The hands seemed to be barely moving and he resisted the urge to throw something at it.

Bobby was so glad to see the clock hit five that he almost got up and did an Aussie happy dance right there in the middle of the bullpen. And if asked, he would have just said that he was glad to be off for the day. But his gaze was pinned on Tara as soon as the clock struck five so when her eyes met his, he winked at her and was delighted when a smile spread across her face. He hurried and secured his computer and went over to her desk. “Pick you up in an hour?” He asked, rapping his knuckles on her desk.

“Of course.” Tara’s smile widened at him. “That would be great.” She said. She’d known another moment or two of panic after lunch when she was in the shower. She really didn’t want to go on a date with Bobby dressed like this. “An hour would be absolutely wonderful.”

She was gorgeous when she smiled like that. Bobby couldn’t help the thought… it was true. She was gorgeous anyway but even more so when her eyes lit up with that shy, coy smile of hers. “Care to escort me to the garage?” he asked.

“I’d be delighted.” She responded, picking up her things and meeting him at the end of her desk.

They were the only two people leaving at that time so it wasn’t hard to get their own elevator.

Which was helpful when he pulled her close and kissed her as soon as the doors closed, his hand wrapping around her waist as he held her, the other hand cupping her cheek with his fingers reaching back behind her ear to tangle in her hair.

Tara’s arms wrapped around his waist as she gave herself over into the thrill of his kisses, of the gentle pressure of his lips on hers… the teasing caress of his tongue on her lips as she parted them to allow him access.

The elevator pinged to let them know that it was going to stop on a floor and they reluctantly broke apart and Tara hurried to position herself next to him. They ended up sharing the elevator the rest of the way to the cars. Bobby glanced around and realized he’d found the perfect dead zone in the garage - no camera coverage- and he pulled her closer, stealing a quick kiss. “So an hour…” he said quietly.

“Yeah… one hour. No bells.” She smiled. He stole another kiss and let her head off to her car, allowing her the head start on her way to her place.

Bobby frowned pensively before he got into his car. He needed to do this right. Tara deserved that.

Flowers.

He needed to get flowers. The question was what sort?

Tara didn’t really strike him as a rose girl. He figured when he needed to, one longstemmed rose should take care of it.

So what sort of second date flowers … well… technically it was still first date.

His forehead settled into a frown as he thought about it. He finally had it and he headed off to the florist shop before turning his car in the direction of Tara’s.

Tara had rushed home, her mind frantically searching through her closet in her head as she drove.

She’d had it narrowed down to two outfits by the time she parked and practically flew up the walk to her place.

She figured that a quick shower would be a good thing so she took one, hoping that it would calm her nerves a bit as she showered and inhaled deeply of the soothing scent of her vanilla body wash. She wrapped herself in a towel as she got out, combing her hair out before putting some mousse in it and grabbing the blow dryer to dry her hair.

Tara was certain that she’d never done her hair that quickly before.

And as she stood in front of the closet, her two outfit selections on the closet doors while she studied them.

“Hmm… jeans will be too casual…” She muttered as she consulted the other option. “Wait… he wore jeans today with his shirt and tie…” Tara grinned before grabbing the jeans and adding a cotton sweater in a deep eggplant shade that she knew she looked good in. She slipped a pair of loafers on just as a knock was heard on the door. “Coming…” She called out, as she hurried through the house.

Bobby shifted his weight on his feet as he waited for her to open the door. He glanced at the flowers he was holding and thought about how perfect they would be for her. He’d been drawn immediately to the pale orange lilies surrounded by red, yellow and magenta gerbera daisies. They practically screamed Tara at him. He hoped she’d like them.

“Hi.”

“Hi.” He said back to her when she opened the door. He smiled at her, holding the flowers out to her. “For you, luv.”

“Why Bobby…” She smiled, taking the flowers and taking a sniff of them. “They’re beautiful. I love them.” She said. “Thank you… would you like to come in while I put them in water?” She offered, opening the door wider and moving away from it so that he could come in.

“You’re welcome. I looked at them and they said your name to me.” he told her as he shut the door quietly behind him. “Nice place.” he said, looking around. She only had one story… he at least had a spiral staircase leading up to his bedroom loft. But this living room was comfy… cozy looking as she had it decorated in chocolate browns with splashes of lime and turquoise. It really suited her.

“Oh…” Tara raised her head up and looked at him through the cut out between kitchen and living room. “Thank you. I re-did it in the spring. It used to be a little mismatched and I figured that I’ve been here long enough to become a bit more co-ordinated.” She smiled, glancing around. “Would you like a tour?”

He glanced at his watch as his stomach growled. “Maybe later?” He asked, looking at her sheepishly, embarrassed that his stomach was growling.

Tara chuckled. “Sure. Later would be good then… I’m getting rather hungry.” She admitted as she brought the flowers out to set them on the coffee table.

Bobby grinned at her. “Then let’s go.” He said, waiting for her to grab a coat and her purse.

“And just where are you planning on taking me?” She asked as she shrugged into the coat and followed him out her front door. She locked it behind her and was pleasantly surprised that he offered her his arm. She tucked her arm around his and smiled up at him.

“Well, I was thinking the steakhouse.” Bobby said, naming the familiar restaurant. “I really hope that’s okay… I actually made a reservation this afternoon.”

The fact that he’d put thought into their dinner date tonight touched Tara and she smiled. “Sounds perfect.” She said softly, her heart flip flopping wildly in her chest when he grinned at her and threw in a wink as he opened her car door for her.

Dinner was fantastic.

Well…

Bobby and Tara could only assume that it was all cooked properly.

She’d been focused on his every word and movement since the moment he held her chair for her.

Bobby had been mesmerized from the moment sh buttered a piece of bread and daintily took a bite.

They barely noticed that they ordered and that they had already eaten, they were too busy talking and getting lost in each other.

Bobby was loathe to see the evening end and he reluctantly pushed back from the table when it became apparent that the restaurant was becoming impatient at having to remain open for just the two of them. “I suppose we have to go.” He said, watching Tara.

“I suppose.” She smiled at him. “We could go for a walk.” She suggested.

Bobby grinned at her. “I’d love to go for a walk.” He agreed.

He held the door for her as they left… hesitating when his instincts told him to reach for her hand.

She glanced up at him and was momentarily confused by the look of indecision in his eye. “Well… come on then.” She said softly, holding out her hand for him to take.

She’d never been one to appreciate the tender love indicated by a held hand.

Your love for a child… expressed through a held hand.

Love and compassion for the sick or elderly… equaled a held hand.

But Tara Williams… had never really… truly… been much of a hand holder.

So she’d surprised herself this afternoon when she’d taken his hand.

But it felt like the thing to do now… as she waited for his hand to envelope hers. She breathed a sigh of relief when he did and gave her fingers a squeeze. “I like holding your hand.” She said softly, looking up at him again and smiling.

Bobby smiled back, his earlier indecision floating away when she offered him her hand. “Well… I’d be happy to hold your hand whenever and as often as you want me too.”

Tara’s smile made his heart flip flop wildly in his chest.

They walked and talked for what seemed like minutes as the moon began to rise higher in the sky.

When Bobby looked at his watch … it actually had been hours.

Tara shivered slightly as a soft breeze began to blow… gently ruffling the golden leaves above them.

“You’re cold.” Bobby said suddenly as though the thought had just occurred to him. He gave her fingers a gentle squeeze. “I should take you home before you catch something.”

Tara smiled up at him. “No.. I’m fine.” She protested even as she shivered again.

“No…” He shook his head at her. “Well you’re fine… that’s true.” He teased, letting his gaze surf her body for a moment before he looked into her eyes. “But you are cold, like it or not.” She wrinkled her nose at him so he reached out and tweaked it, making her laugh. He dropped her hand, just long enough to shrug out of the jacket that he was wearing … making him glad he’d put it on over what he was wearing this morning.

Today had turned out infinitely better than he’d thought it would be when he left this morning.

“There.” He said, after he managed to get her bundled into it.

“I’m drowning in it.” She protested, waving her hands weakly. Well… she supposed they were still in there, the sleeves of his jacket hung well below where her hands were. Her protests weakened with every breath she took as she breathed in the glorious scent of him, lingering all over his jacket as the collar rose up to brush her chin. She’d never felt so encompassed by anything the way that Tropical Delight aroma was surrounding her.

Somehow, she didn’t mind one bit.

Bobby chuckled, bending his head to drop a kiss on the tip of her nose. “You look cute in it.” He grinned at her.

Tara rolled her eyes at him but didn’t protest any further.

Because Bobby had abandoned her hand in favor of wrapping his arm around her shoulders and pulling her closer to him as they continued to walk.

Bobby felt like he was caught in a time warp.

Only they weren’t dressed the way they had been before.

He reached out and gently touched her cheek, brushing a strand of hair back behind her ears. “I’ve had a great time tonight, Tara.”

Tara smiled. “I … well… me too.” She said softly. “Would you like to come in for coffee?”

“It’s too late.” He declined. “Do you have plans for tomorrow?” He asked, his eyes searching her face.

“Lucky you… I have absolutely nothing planned.” Tara said softly. “Well…. There is one thing. But did you have something in mind?” She asked curiously.

“I have nothing.” His eyes narrowed slightly at her. “What’s the one thing, luv?”

She squirmed slightly under his gaze. “It’s nothing really… I actually was planning on going out to the pumpkin patch and getting a pumpkin to carve. They have a corn maze and hay rides … I usually go and end up spending the day because they have apple cider and pumpkin doughnuts…” She rambled slightly in her explanation.

He loved the way that her eyes lit up and sparkled at him as she divulged one of her usual Autumn traditions. “So… you do that every year?” He asked.

Tara nodded, looking into his eyes. “Every year.” She repeated. “And then I bring my pumpkin home and carve it before I have dinner … and then it’s apple cider and watching it glow in the window.”

“Sounds like fun.” He said. “Would you like some company tomorrow?” He asked, reaching to rest a hand on her shoulder. “I mean… yeah… if you don’t mind…?”

“I’d love company tomorrow, Bobby.” Tara was quick to reassure him, her heart beating rapidly at the idea of spending the next day together.

“What time do you want me to pick you up?”

“Eight.”

“Eight?” He asked, his eyebrows shooting up to his hairline.

“You want to have breakfast before we go, right?” Tara asked. “And give me a decent good morning kiss?” She teased.

“I think I’ll need to give you a decent good night kiss first.” Bobby smiled at her. “Eight is a good idea.”

“Of course it is.”

“So I’ll say good night then.” He reached to gently touch her face before he drew closer to her… pausing and nudging her up a step so that she was able to stand nose to nose with him. “I had the greatest time with you…” He said quietly before he moved in, pressing his lips to hers in a gentle kiss, deepening it only when Tara responded with a soft moan to his teasing flicks of his tongue against her lips.

Tara’s arms wrapped around his neck and she gave in to the gentle pressure of his lips and the teasing of his tongue.

He pulled away when they both needed to take a breath. “Good night Tara.” He breathed gently, seeing that her eyes had gone all dreamy on him.

“Good night Bobby.” She replied, smiling dreamily at him before she turned and went into her apartment.
