SEEING RED
Fall Challenge Story
Began: October 23, 2008
Part Nine
EpilogueThe red leaves gently fell from trees that lined the park path creating a deep red carpet under foot.
A blond-headed woman and man walked on either side of a blond-haired little girl of about four years of age, dressed in a red coat and matching red hat. Behind them strolled four couples: one blond and dark-haired, another blond and redheaded, the third blond and dark-haired with peppering of gray and one all blond. Behind them four teenagers followed, laughing and joking amongst themselves.
“This is the spot.” The blond woman informed the little girl and man walking with her. “This is where Auntie Sue and Uncle Myles found me all those years ago.”
“’Cuz you wan away from home, wight Momma?” The little girl remarked knowingly, looking at her mother for confirmation.
Twenty-four year old Alyssa Madison MacLauren-Taylor nodded to her daughter in confirmation. “That’s right, my little ladybug.”
“You wan away ‘cuz you were dealous of Auntie Hawey, weren’t you Momma?”
“That’s right.” Alyssa confirmed as she glanced towards the blond and dark-haired couple and smiling softly. “I thought Auntie Haley was taking my place.”
Haley MacLauren-Rogers smiled at her older sister and teased. “Nobody could take your place, Lyssa. You are truly one of a kind.”
“Gee, thanks.” Alyssa remarked sarcastically.
“I mean it!” Haley insisted. “How many four years olds would scale a chair-link fence, walk four blocks to a bus stop than climb on a bus with a bunch of strangers?
Than get off the bus at the train station and get on a train bound for D.C.” Shaking her head slightly the twenty-year old remarked. “I still can’t believe both the bus driver and the steward on the train didn’t stop you.”
“They both claimed that they thought she was with someone.” The blond woman from the blond and dark-haired with peppering of gray couple commented. “At least that’s what they said when we interviewed them.”
Haley glanced at the blond woman who had been adopted by her sister during her brief stay in D.C. all those years ago. Looking back to her sister she added eagerly. “That’s another thing. How many four year olds, miles and miles away from home would adopt the first couple that they see as their surrogate parents?”
“They weren’t the
first couple that I saw.” Alyssa objected. “I saw a lot of couples between my walk from the train station and the park.”
“You are just fortunate that the couple you did pick happened to be FBI.” The blond man from the all blond couple remarked seriously. “You could have gotten yourself into a whole lot of trouble, young lady.”
“I know, Daddy.” Alyssa acknowledged contritely as Matthew MacLauren gave her a stern look. “And I know how much I scared you and Momma.” She glanced at her mother and gave her a sheepish look.
“When Myles had called and told us that he and Sue had found you safe and sound in a park in D.C. I nearly fainted with relief and disbelief.” Robin MacLauren told her oldest daughter earnestly. “I couldn’t believe you had ended up in Washington D.C.”
“I honestly didn’t know where I was going.” Alyssa said to the group. “I remember walking away from the house and then I saw the bus so I decided to get on it. When the bus stopped at the station and I saw the big train I decided to get on it. Then when I got to D.C. I thought that looked like an interesting place so I got off the train there and made my way to the park.”
Haley looked at her dark-haired husband, Dylan Rogers and then at the others. “Didn’t I say she was one of a kind?”
As the others laughed Alyssa merely shrugged and said. “I figured since Momma and Daddy didn’t need me anymore that I was going to go far, far away.”
“Well, you certainly succeeded.” Her sister remarked. “I’d say seven hundred miles is far, far away. Especially for a four year old girl.”
“I don’t think I’ll ever forget the feeling of coming home from your grandmother's funeral and finding you missing.” Robin told Alyssa seriously.
“I don’t think I’ll ever forget the feeling of seeing you pleading on National television for Alyssa’s safe return.” Myles Leland, the blond of the blond and red headed couple, told Robin sincerely. Looking at his honorary niece seriously he added. “In all my years as an FBI agent I have never seen a set of parents so distraught about their missing child.”
“Or so grateful to get her back.” Sue added with a slight smile.
“As traumatic an experience as that was for us and for our families, a lot of benefits have come from that little episode in our lives.” Robin commented warmly as she surveyed the large group surrounding her. Of the five couples present, three of them were brought about because of Myles and Sue finding Alyssa that fateful day twenty years ago. The same was true of three of the four teenagers present.
Alyssa looked towards the blond and dark-haired with peppering of gray couple. Even though Jack and Sue Hudson had been mutually attracted to each other for four years before Alyssa had appeared into their lives, they hadn’t declared their love until after Alyssa had adopted Sue and Myles as her surrogate parents. Jealousy and fear of losing Sue to Myles, or any other man, had motivated Jack to action. The result was the two of them getting engaged the same day that Myles and Sue had found Alyssa. Then six months later they were married. Due to her rather significant role in pushing Jack into action Alyssa was asked to be the flower girl. Myles was the best man, a role he shared with Bobby as Jack felt grateful to both men for different reasons. Three years after their wedding Jayden Samuel Hudson was born, followed a year and a half later by his sister, Grace Marie.
Another person to have benefited from Alyssa’s running away from home was Myles. When he, Sue and Jack had flown to Chicago with Alyssa to return her to her grateful parents Myles had met Maggie Sinclair, Robin’s best friend. The two of them had hit it off immediately and had begun corresponding and visiting back and forth between Chicago and D.C. After six months had passed Maggie requested, and was granted a job transfer to D.C. Six months after that the two of them were married. Once again Alyssa was requested as the flower girl. Two years after they were married their son Shawn joined the family.
Shawn, Jayden, Grace along with Bobby and Tara’s son, Roger and Lucy’s daughter, Alice were the five musketeers, doing almost everything together. And whenever the MacLaurens came into town to visit the Hudsons and the Lelands, Alyssa and Haley’s younger sister, Michelle easily fit into the mix.
The third couple to have benefited from Alyssa’s safe return was Alyssa herself. Shortly after she had returned to her family she had met Clay Taylor when her mother had brought her to a neighbors for a play date. While the mothers laughed and talked the children played together. Clay quickly became Alyssa favorite playmate and by the time the two of them started school they were the best of friends. Even during the years that it wasn’t considered cool to have a boy or a girl for a best friend they still stuck together, standing up for one another despite everything. Their friendship continued to grow and blossom resulting in the two of them promising to love, honor and cherish each other just a few months after they turned nineteen. Than on their first anniversary they welcomed their own precious daughter, Susan Myra, named for Sue and Myles, into the world.
Looking at her parents eagerly little Sue quickly assured them. “Don’t worry, Momma, Daddy I won’t wun away ‘cuz Baby comin’. I won’t be dealous of Baby.” Then as if to prove her point she placed a kiss on her mother’s rounded belly. “I wove Baby.”
Alyssa laughed and gently lowered herself to her knees to hug her daughter tightly to her. Then looking up she smiled at the people watching them lovingly. Even though she knew that she should never have run away from home she couldn’t help but be glad that she had. The result had been an extended family that she loved as well as her own.
With Clay’s help Alyssa struggled to her feet and then continued down the tree-lined path with Clay and little Sue, the red leaves crunching under their feet as their family both fleshly and honorary followed behind them. As the red leaves continued to fall around them as they walked Alyssa felt her heard swell with love and appreciation for the day twenty years ago when Myles Leland the third and Sue Thomas found a little four-year old girl dressed in red and took her into their lives and into their hearts.
