It Happened One Autumn
Jack was looking intently at the map in front of him, his thoughts lost far inside his heart and soul ; thoughts which turned around a blonde analyst who’d been kidnapped earlier that day... because of one of his stupid move—he placed her in Malone’s car to try to protect her. Yeah, what a good angel guardian I make... I put her in more danger than she was... He admonished himself.
Lucy who had tried to catch some sleep had failed miserably, steering her body from the uncomfortable position she’d lay on the bureau issue cloth, she pressed her hand on her painful neck.
When she saw Jack standing steal like a statue, she could felt the guilt he was accusing himself of, knowing the glance too much for having seeing it several times since the time Sue had joined the team. Not that she put herself into dangerous position often, but her stubbornness had gained her some trouble in the past, and the dark-haired agent couldn’t stand the feeling of knowing she could be armed in any possible way.
Overwhelmed by her own turmoil, she couldn’t stay still, not being able to do something useful to help her friends, so she decided that a walk could cool her worries out of her mind. And besides, Levi hadn’t gone since a while so he could use the trip too.
Coming closer to Jack she said, “I’m gonna take Levi for a walk nearby. I’ll leave my phone open if you need me.” Never tearing his eyes from the map he nodded to her statement. Trying to give him the last bit of hope she had, she squeezed his shoulder in a reassuring gesture. “We’ll find her, Jack...” Her simple comment reached his goal when he shadowy smiled at her and pressed her hand with his own. His gaze turned slightly to met hers a brief moment, just enough to share their burden. Clipping the leash on the dog’s collar, she steeled a last glance with the tall agent before heading out of the bullpen.
The night was cold from the autumn frisky wind, bringing noisy chatters to her ears. Walking peacefully into the darkness wasn’t something she usually liked, but tonight things were different—she needed the calmness of her ride and the comforting caress Levi was doing along her legs, walking beside her. Memories of the last years floated through her mind—souvenirs of her rooming with Sue and Levi—some goods... some sad... She didn’t have the strength to stop the tears from falling down her cheeks, nor didn’t want to. Sitting on a close bench, she let them free, asking the canine to join her. Gladly accepting the offer, he was pleased to share his own pain with the woman who’s come second in his doggy life. Laying his head on her laps, he whined his tears while she gently strokes his soft fur.
“You miss her too, uh, Levi?” Raising his eyes to met hers he licked her face once to dry her tears and took back his initiate position. “You know buddy, she wouldn’t lost faith if the situation was reverse... so neither will we... We’re gonna find her... soon...” Her voice was shaky and sound unsure, but the fact to say out loud kind of help them both to believe it. Taking encer in Sue’s believes in God, they closed their eyes to silently pray Him for strength and help.
As if He had heard their claim, a wave of wind start blowing, lightly caressing their features and making them open their eyes to see the beauty of their surroundings. Trees had started to lose their leaves and branches were dancing, swaying with the wind. Lucy had witness lots of autumn nights before, but none of them came closer to the wonders she saw in this instant.
Sue’s right, she thought, God has powerful way to let us know He’s always with us, sharing our pain and joy... Closing her eyes and breathing the fresh scents He offered her, peace and strength rebuilt even stronger than before, she smiled. She knew her friend would come back... she was certain of that.
Standing up after she gave a last rub to Levi, she headed back for the bullpen, ready to plunge in the search again. Lowering her gaze to the dog she stated, “I love autumn night, Levi... do you?” The bark he gave in respond assure her he was too... even more with the one they just shared, reaching the same level of peace and serenity.
