I'm taking the plunge. This is my first Sue Thomas story and I know I really should post in the Beginners Section before hand, but I saw this challenge and it caught my interest and my muse has refused to let me be. I hope it's okay. I'm not brilliant at writing humor so, if there is any humor does appear, I appologise. I know roughly where I'm going with this but we shall see. This story shouldn't go more than a PG13.

Hope you all enjoy it smiley_181.gif

Warm Memories

Winter must be cold with no warm memories (An Affair to Remember)

Chapter 1.

The snow swirled and the wind whistled through the streets, simultaneously attacking everyone and everything in its path. The wind tore at possessions and bit at exposed skin, determined to leave its mark wherever possible. The people who bravely attempted to walk the streets fought in vain to keep the impeding weather at bay, wrapping their coats tighter around them and covering any expanse of skin while the buildings stood tall and proud, determined to withstand anything Mother Nature threw at them. December was usually the month that often brought cold, and often treacherous, weather to the streets of Washington D.C. but this was the worst it had been for some years. The snow had decided to come early this year, falling in the month of November instead. Most of the roads were deserted; officials had recommended that people should not leave their home unless it was strictly necessary whilst the sidewalk that ran along either side of the road was buried under several inches of snow.

The snow was falling thick and fast, covering a track of freshly made footprints that littered the sidewalk. The prints seemed to meander aimlessly, as though the feet that had made them had no real idea where they were going. Within minutes the track was barely distinguishable as a fresh layer of snow coated the ground, completely hiding the trail from view.

A broad shouldered figure, slightly distorted through the falling snow, traipsed along the deserted sidewalk, hunched over with his head bowed. His hands were buried deep in his pockets, his dark hair flecked with white and his eyes were unfocused. His posture indicated a man with a lot on his mind; a man desperately hurt and confused.

The figure stumbled slightly, his hands sliding out of his pockets. He paused for a moment, regaining his composure. He looked up briefly, taking in his empty surroundings. He was glad. He didn’t want people looking at him, whispering to their companions at his disheveled state. He didn’t want their sympathy. He just wanted everything to be all right again. Taking another steadying breath, he continued his trek through the winter wonderland, barely noticing the white around him.

“You ready?” he asked, a smile playing upon his face. He couldn’t help but smile whenever he was around her. The way she laughed, the way she tended to everything she did with extra care and the way she was always focused upon what she was doing.

“Sure, just give me a minute.” He watched as she called out to the dark skinned woman at the other end of the room. He watched as she quickly conversed with her flat mate, explaining that she was going out and would be back later. He raised his eyes to glance at the woman, a knowing look residing in her eyes. He gave a warning look as he retrieved his companion’s jacket, offering to her.

What was it with matchmakers?

The man stumbled again, this time, free-falling to the unforgiving concrete. Stunned, the man lay on the floor, making no attempt to rise to his feet. He didn’t have the energy or the will power to do it. He lay face down, the snow soaking his pants, freezing the lower half of his body. He breathed in the musty smell of dirty through the layers of white that had cushioned his landing. He couldn’t move. He didn’t want to move.
With superhuman effort, he braced himself with his numb hands and pushed himself onto his knees, brushing flakes of snow mixed with grit off his face. He exhaled, a steam cloud rising in front of his face. All the while the snow continued to fall, replacing the flakes his had just brushed off. He bent his head as a wave of emotion engulfed him. Sobs wracked his body as he allowed the tears he had been holding back to fall freely, mixing with the snow.

“Jack?”

Uh-oh...I mean welcome to the challenge and everything but...uh-oh! What's with impending doom in first posts lately? batting eyelashes.gif I wondered if it was Jack and then wondered where Sue was as the post went along and now I know it's Jack...but a sobbing Jack?!

P.S. And no worries about posting here first instead of in Beginners Corner. The Challenges are the exception to the rule.

Welcome Jenna! I'm so glad you entered the challenge, and what a start it was! You really captured my interest with that intro. I can't wait to read more.

Welcome to the challenge!! What a beginning!!!

Why is Jack so distraught?? And, what has happened to Sue???

Wonderful description to get us right into the scene and situation!! I can't wait to see where you take us!!!

First, Welcome!! My first story was a challenge, too!! You picked the right group to which to reveal your "writer" side! hifive.gif

Second, YIKES! What's happened? You do realize that the Jack-crazed women on this board are very protective of him . . . Oh, come on, you know who you are! batting eyelashes.gif hehe.gif

Regina... I honestly do not know who you could be talking about. giggle.gif

JennaLouise, welcome! You've already made an incredible imprint in this challenge with your first post.

But, a sobbing Jack? I don't like that one bit.

What happened?

And who's found him?

Lindsy
JennaLouise
Thank you for making me feel welcome. I'm glad you're all intrigued by the first post. I hope the rest of the story lives up to expectations - I'm my own worst enemy sometimes.

Rest assured - Nothing bad will come of Jack or Sue! I don't think I could live with myself if I was to do something terrible like... Oh I don't know... Make Allie or David Reappear?

But before anyone gets the wrong idea and has my head on a stick, don't worry. Neither will appear in this story. I can promise you that right now.

Anyways, Let's find out what Sue's up to... and who has spotted Jack crying in the snow.

Happy Readings. book.gif

Chapter 2.

Sue Thomas had always loved playing in the snow. There was just something about the white stuff that always held her captive and, no matter how much she tried to avoid watching the flakes fall and resist the urge to go outside and play, she always somehow ended up outside. Even as a grown woman, she enjoyed playing in the snow.

She watched the frantic antics of her beloved Golden Retriever as he frolicked around in the snow, getting so far before stopping and looking to his mistress.

Raising her arm, she threw the tennis ball across the park, watching as the dog sprung into action, chasing the ball and barking loudly. The ball came to a stop, the snow barricading its way. Sue watched as Levi crouched low, his tail waving gaily in the air before he pounced on it, claiming it in his mouth victoriously. He trotted back to his mistress, his tail held high. Dropping the ball at her feet he looked up at her, his dark eyes pleading for it to be thrown one last time. Sue gave him a stern look before relenting.

“Last time Levi,” she said, crouching down to scoop up the soaking tennis ball. She threw it and it sliced through the winter air, landing somewhere in a snowdrift, Levi hot on its trail. Sue follow the Golden, treading carefully so as not to fall.

Levi trotted into view, the tennis ball, once again, within the clutches of his jaw. He dropped it on the snow-covered ground and proceeded to shake his fur free of the snowflakes, drenching Sue as she attached the lead to his collar.

“Levi!” she exclaimed, wiping her face with her gloved hand. “C’mon, let’s go inside,” she said, scooping the tennis ball up and slipping it into her pocket, tugging on the lead.

The two walked along the pathway that took them to the side of the road. Looking both ways she noticed that the sidewalk was devoid of people. Looking down at her furry companion she shrugged and started her trek along the sidewalk, imagining the warm cup of hot chocolate she would drink to warm her freezing insides, followed by a nice hot shower to cleanse her skin. Smiling to herself, she looked around, wondering how she could have ever left the place that had offered her so much in the few short years she’d been there.

“You know Levi, I’m glad I stayed,” she spoke aloud, looking down at her furry companion. “This place means so much to me. I’ve got everything I’ve ever wanted right here. Friends. A home. A good job. A family…” she trailed off, the faces of the people that meant the world to her filling her mind. Tara. Lucy. Myles. Bobby. Dimitrius…

“Jack?” Sue stopped where she was, staring at the form kneeling in the snow. “Is that you?” she asked, as Levi pulled frantically at his leash. He had seen his other favourite human. He barked loudly as the head looked up.

Hearing the sound of his name, Jack looked up, the familiar voice filling his ears. His dark eyes found hers, searching hers. A light wind blew; Sue’s hair danced around her shoulders, her face contorted in worry. She crouched down beside him.

“Jack?” she asked again. She noticed the trail of moisture that lined his cheeks. Her heart broke. She couldn’t bear seeing him so down. The hurt look in his eyes would haunt her for many nights. He was her best friend. Her soul mate…

Levi could sense that something wasn’t right with Jack. With his head lowered, he approached the kneeling man, laying his head upon his knee, looking up with soulful eyes. Jack automatically started stroking Levi’s head as another tear escaped. He couldn’t bring his eyes to meet Sue’s. He knew if he did he would never be able to stop himself from lunging at her; from showing her what she really meant to him. He remained silent, refusing to look at her, effectively breaking all communication.

Sue reached for his hand. He wasn’t going to speak and she knew better than to push. Giving his hand a light squeeze with her gloved one she spoke up.

“C’mon, let’s get you inside.”

You know, I can't help but feel that those words from Sue would have to warm Jack even more than the hot chocolate Sue was dreaming about earlier.

You have me fully engaged in this. The most heart wrenching part was when you wrote that Jack, who was crying, was no longer able to look into Sue's eyes.

What a story, Jennalouise!! The scene in the park with Levi playing in the snow was so real, I could see it all in front of me!!!

Now, although I'm glad to know it doesn't seem to be Sue that has Jack so down - I'm worried as to what does!!!

I come baring a 3rd chapter. smiley_181.gif It's been re-written several times and I'm still not entirely happy with it... But it'll do.

Thank you for all the nice comments - it's really uplifting right now. I'll try not to disappoint.

Chapter 4 is bringing a few problems right now. I'm having to re-write it because I'm not happy with it (I really am my own worst critic sometimes!!) but I assure you, i will have something within the next two days.

A fore warning though. I'm getting ready to sit my mock G.C.S.E exams (gasp!) so i may take a while with posting. But I will have this story done before I break up for the Christmas holidays! Well, I'll try anyway.

Lets go join Jack and Sue in the snow snowman.gif

Enjoy xoxo

Chapter 3.

Jack allowed himself to be pulled to his feet, despite himself. He shivered, realizing for the first time just how cold he really was. He looked down, still avoiding Sue’s gaze. Brown eyes stared back at him, penetrating through his own depressed state, staring deep into his soul. Crouching down to the Golden’s level, he scratched the dog’s head, smiling when Levi whined in appreciation.

“Hey Levi,” he said quietly, stroking the damp fur. With one last pat, he rose to his feet, turning towards the blonde woman whom was standing beside him, searching his face through worried eyes. He was obviously hiding something and, whatever it was, was affecting him more than he cared to admit. She frowned slightly, chewing on her lower lip.

“Jack -”

Jack shook his head indicating that he did not wish to discuss anything at that particular moment in time. Sue took a moment to school her features and control her emotion at Jack’s lack of trust in her. He was her best friend, besides Lucy. He could tell her anything, good or bad. What was he hiding that was so terrible that he felt that he could not talk to her about it? She finally spoke, breaking the tension between them. “C’mon” she said quietly, tugging at Levi’s leash. Jack followed her, wishing he could turn back the time and make things right again, the events of the last few days still weighing heavily on his mind.

Throughout the short walk to the apartment the she shared with Lucy, worry consumed Sue’s thoughts. Jack definitely wasn’t himself. He hadn’t been for the last week or so, when he’d taken a call from one of his parents. He’d disappeared for a couple of days. The only person who knew of Jack’s whereabouts was Bobby, Jack’s best friend. But even he’d been unusually tight-lipped, refusing to answer anyone’s queries. The usually cheerful Aussie hadn’t even taken pleasure in baiting Myles; even when Jack had returned, looking tired and unkempt, Bobby had still been a little uneasy.

But it was Jack’s behaviour that had puzzled her more than anything: especially within the last few days. Since he had returned, Jack had been more attentive to her needs, always at her side when she needed help or just to be there to inform her of any missed parts of a conversation. But she had noticed something more than that. He had been more open, more flirtatious with her. More than he’d ever been. He would often give her a flirty wink when she caught him staring at her and he seemed to make up any excuse to be near her. But since this afternoon he had avoided her like the plague. She couldn’t think of anything that would have had such an effect upon him that he didn’t seem to want to be within the vicinity of her. He had seemed fairly upbeat that morning when he had come to pick her up for breakfast. He had even asked if she was free that evening and if she wanted to catch a film and afterwards go for a coffee. He claimed that he needed to tell her something, something important.

The couple stopped outside Sue’s apartment building. She slipped off one of her gloves and rummaged around in her bag, searching for the keys to the apartment building. As she pulled them out of her purse, they caught upon the clasp of her bag and fell to the floor, landing upon the cold snow at her feet. Jack and Sue bent down at the same time to retrieve the keys, Jack’s frozen hand brushing against hers. Sue felt the skin tingle at his touch, scorching the pale skin. She glanced up, her gaze colliding with his.

Jack felt all the breath leave his body at the simple touch. His numb fingers suddenly seemed to be on fire, almost like he had scalded his hand in boiling hot water. It was only a simple touch, but it robbed him of all the breath in his body. He knew she was off limits, but he couldn’t help it. She was everything he had ever wanted. All he had ever known. He could feel his heart beat wildly out of control, like it usually did when she was close to him. She did things to him that he had never felt before in his life, not even with Allie or Jessica.

Clearing his throat awkwardly, Jack handed Sue the keys, rising to his feet. He looked away, embarrassed. Sue felt the blush creeping up her neck. She straightened up and, keeping her gaze trained upon the door handle. Making quick work of the lock, she opened the door and stood aside, letting Jack step in through the door and into the heated stairwell.

Although I'm late to this story, let me also say Welcome to the Challenge!

This story has captured my attention almost right away - I'm with everyone else. Whatever is going on with Jack it started with that phone call.

Look forward to seeing more of your work! And good luck with your upcoming exams.

Guess what?! I managed to get Chapter 4 done! Wahoo!! Hopefully there's no real big mistakes... Not sure if Jack drinks hot chocolate though... By the way, does anyone know what Jack's parents name's are? I will be needing them soon.

But first I need to rant. I had two free lessons yeterday because my Business Studies teacher has taken a last portion of Vocational students to Disneyland Paris. I have about 14 people in my business class anyway, but yesterday there was only 5 of us. We had no cover teacher, no work and there was only 2 computers so I couldn't write this chapter sooner. So that was 2 hours wasted because I am up to date with all my coursework! Stupid school... The teacher that was supposed to be covering for us only showed up about 5 minutes before the end of out second hour!

Anyways. Here's chapter 4. I promise, an explaination for Jack's disappearance and his reluctance to explain himself will come shortly! Heppy readings book.gif

Chapter 4

They stepped inside Sue and Lucy’s apartment, the warmth hitting their cold faces. Jack shrugged off his jacket, hanging it up on the hook before helping Sue with hers. He skimmed his hands over her shoulders and curled his numb fingers around the collar of the jacket.

Even through the thick layers of clothing, Sue could feel his hands skimming over her shoulders and down her arms, sending delectable waves of pleasure crashing through her body. She could feel him as he stood behind her. He was close enough that, if she wanted, she could turn around be within the circle of his arms. Every single hair on her body was on end as his cold fingers trailed down the creamy skin of her arms as the coat was pulled away from her body.

Taking a slow and steady breath she turned around, unable to stop the fluttering sensations in the pit of her stomach. She allowed her gaze to travel from the vast expanse of muscle chest hidden by his shirt up to his face, tracing his facial features. She raised her eyes to meet his, her own hazel eyes meeting his dark ones. She swallowed, finding herself unable to break the spell that had been cast upon them. She didn’t want to.

The air around them seemed to sizzle, the room temperature suddenly rising by a couple of degrees. Both seemed unable to break the connection between them. Sue was vaguely aware of his hands still gently holding her arms. Jack held her steady gaze. He could hear the blood rushing in his ears, his heart accelerating. He swallowed the lump that had suddenly formed at the back of his throat. He watched as her tongue darted out to moisten her lips, sending his thoughts into overdrive. His eyes lingered on her lips, noticing that she was gnawing on her lower one. He resisted the urge to groan: if only she knew what she did to him.

Levi sat a short way off, watching the two humans. He tilted his head to one side. Humans are strange creatures he thought. Maybe some doggy intervention will help? Levi rose and trotted over to Jack and Sue, circling their legs. They were too wrapped up in each other’s eyes to notice him. He backed up slightly and rose on his hind legs and placed his front paws on Sue’s back, sending her forward into the circle of Jack’s arms.

Jack quickly wrapped his arms around her, holding her up. He breathed in the aroma of her shampoo, her unique scent filling his senses. He loosened his hold on her as pulled back slightly, her face flushed.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered quietly, pulling away completely, feeling the loss of heat as she did. Avoiding his eyes she quickly turned to the Golden Retriever.

“Levi,” she groaned as he looked up at her. He lay on the floor, placing his paw over his face. She folded her arms across her chest, fighting to keep her face straight. “Don’t act all innocent on me,” she scolded. She turned back at Jack, still feeling the heat radiating from her cheeks. “I’ll get you a blanket so you don’t get cold,” she mumbled walking away from him to her bedroom.

Jack watched her retreating figure, mentally cursing himself. He had let another opportunity slip through his fingers yet again. He knew she wouldn’t wait forever. He knew he needed to get his act together. But he couldn’t. He couldn’t stand the thought of rejection and the possible sacrifice of her friendship, not when it meant so much to him. He sighed. It looked like he would never get the chance to experience ‘more’ with her…

Sue stood at the doorway of her bedroom, the thick woolen blanket supported by her arm while she took a second to admire him. He looked devilishly handsome, even though he must have been freezing cold. He had a far away look in his eyes like he was deep in thought. She wanted to desperately reach out and hold him close and ease the worry lines that were etched into his forehead. Something was bothering him and he was hiding it. She wanted to help ease his pain.

“Here,” she said, leaving the doorway, holding out the blanket to him. “I’ll go make you some chocolate.” Handing Jack the blanket, she walked into the kitchen to make the drinks. She glanced up every now and again, keeping her gaze on Jack to make sure he was okay.

Jack sat on the sofa in the living room, the blanket wrapped around his shoulders. He inhaled the enticing smell the lingered upon it. It smelled like Sue. He could imagine her wrapped up in it on a cold night when she was having one of her girlie nights with Lucy and Tara. He wondered what they got up to and talked about during those nights.

Sue slipping into the living room, two mugs held in her hand. She handed one to Jack, which he accepted gratefully, gripping the cup with both of his hands, and took a seat beside him. She took a long sip, the hot drink seeping through her insides, making her shiver at the feeling. Jack looked at her, raising his eyebrow.

You O-K? He signed with his free hand. Sue nodded.

“Just enjoying the hot drink,” she replied back in sign whilst speaking at the same time. She smiled warmly at him at him, taking another sip. Jack returned her smile with a half-hearted attempt at one and raised his own drink to his lips. He felt her eyes on him. Raising his left arm, he gestured for her to cuddle up to him, having the overwhelming need to hold her close. Sue complied, cuddling against him. Jack wrapped his arm around her, laying his head against hers. They sat like that in silence for a while with no need for words.

Chapter 5

“This is amazing!” she said, her face reflecting the joy in her voice. He couldn’t hide the smile on his face as she leaned closer to him, her arm wrapping around his back. He pressed his lips to her hair, inhaling the aroma of her shampoo: it smelt like flowers or fruit.

She turned her head, allowing him to press feather light kisses across the smooth expanse of skin as he worked his way down her cheek to the corner of her mouth. He pulled back slightly, a smug sense of pride filtering into his system as her eyes opened slowly through the passion-induced haze that consumed her. He smiled at her, whispering the words that he had always dreamed of saying.

“I love you,” he whispered softly before raising his left hand, his middle and ring finger bent towards his palm. ILY

She blinked, observing the scene in front of her. For one horrible moment he thought she was going to pull away and run. Time seemed to stand still as she stared at him, processing what she had seen him say and sign to her. She smiled and relief flooded through him as she opened her mouth to speak.

“I love you too Jack,” she whispered, pulling his head down to hers, meeting his lips and a soft but tender embrace.

Suddenly her warmth disappeared and he opened him eyes, finding himself in a hospital room, the whitewashed walls blinding him. He was laying on the bed, a doctor approaching him with a needle. He swallowed, a cold hand clutching at his heart. The wicked glint in the doctor’s eye had him worried. His pulse began to race, the pounding in his eardrums deafening him.

“No - please!” he called out weakly. “Leave me alone…”

The doctor continued his advance, each step echoing around the cold, lifeless room. His throat was dry. “Somebody please! Help me!” He shouted. He dragged as much air into his lungs and screamed.

“Noooooooooooooooo!!!”

He closed his eyes.

“Estimated time of death -"

“Jack!”

Somebody was calling his name: a very familiar voice.

“Sue!”

“Jack!”

Jack opened his eyes, sitting bolt upright. His clothes clung uncomfortably to his sweat drenched body. He gasped, dragging air into his lungs.

“Jack!”

Jack felt the comforting hand on his arm and turned to look at its owner. He looked into Sue’s hazel eyes and saw the worry that consumed them. He looked away, feeling the tears prickling at the corners of his eyes. He bent his head forward, holding it in his hands, his whole body beginning to shake, the aftermath of the nightmare sinking in. He felt Sue’s hand migrate to his shoulder, lightly massaging the tense muscles underneath. Taking one last deep breath he looked up and turned, reaching for her. He pulled her into a close embrace, seeking the comfort he needed from her, knowing she was the only one who could give it to him.

“Jack? Are you okay?” Sue’s soft voice asked, breaking the silence surrounding them. Jack pulled back slightly, still keeping her within the circle of his arms. A muscle twitched in his jaw as he nodded stiffly. Sue narrowed her eyes. She knew he was lying.

“I don’t believe you,” she murmured softly, her hands sliding from his back to his arms. “You were having a nightmare,” she continued, seeing him open his mouth to protest. “And don’t give me some pathetic story and pretend it’s nothing. What has happened to make you get so worked up a have you crying in the snow? And then wake up from a nightmare screaming.”

Jack looked at her, guilt starting to set in. He should have known better than to keep her out of the loop. She was good.

On the other side of the room Levi was laying on his cushion, having been watching the events that had occurred in the last hour. Jack and Sue had been cuddling together when he’d fallen asleep. Not long after he’d started muttering incoherently, twitching slightly. It was when he started shouting that Levi had gotten his mistresses attention, awakening her from her own cozy slumber. She had managed to wake Jack up and they were now talking quietly. Levi rose to his feet and padded over to the couple, resting his head on Jack’s lap, looking up at him with saddened eyes. Jack looked at the dog and looked back up at Sue, who was still waiting expectantly for him. Sighing, he proceeded to tell her about the phone call from his parents that had affected him more than he cared to admit.

Doesn' proceed mean...well...to proceed...as in cough it up...expell some words...bend our ear...lighten our collective worry load? angry.gif You stopped that post in the middle...didn't you notice?

I'm so sorry I didn't post last night - life's been getting in the way again.

To make up for it, chapter 6 comes in two parts - I have the first part ready now. The second part should be up later tonight. If not, tomorrow morning at the latest.

As far as I know, Jack's parent's and grandparents names have never been mentioned in the show, so I just made them up. If I have 'stolen' the names you have used in any of your storys I am REALLY sorry. Just let me know and I'll change them.

Also my medical knowledge is not as broad as some, even though there are several people in my family that have links with the world of medicine. I appologise for this in advance!!

Anyways, first part of chapter 6 is here. Enjoy.

Chapter 6 Part A

3 Weeks Earlier…
Jack’s Apartment

The shrill ringing of the house phone reverberated around the apartment, determined to alert whoever was home to answer it. Jack groaned. Making sure the bacon wouldn’t burn in his absence, he went to fetch the cordless phone from the living room, checking the caller ID before answering.

“Hello?” he answered, recognizing the number as his parents.

“Jack?” The caller asked anxiously.

“Mom, what’s happened?” Jack asked noting the troubled tone of his mother’s voice.

“Oh Jack it’s your grandmother,” Jack’s mother sniffed tearfully. “She’s been admitted to hospital again after having another funny turn. She hit her head when she fell…” the voice on the end of the phone broke off for a moment as Jack sat on the arm of the sofa, a million thoughts racing through his mind.

“Mom?” he probed gently, trying not to let his own fear show in his voice.

“Oh Jack. They don’t know if she’ll make it out of the coma. You father’s been out of his mind since he received the call this morning.”

Jack felt like he’d received a blow to the mid section as the reality of his mother’s words settled in. His grandma was in hospital, in a coma. He loved his grandmother dearly; she was the one person in the world who knew him. She knew him better than his own mother. His grandmother was the only one who knew of his deepest feelings for… that certain someone. He swallowed.

“Where is dad now?” he asked.

“He’s gone up to see her. He wants to be there if the… inevitable happens,” she whispered. Jack could almost see the tears forming in his mother’s eyes as she spoke. His own vision was clouding as he digested the news.

“Do you… Do you want me to come home?” he asked, fighting back the tears that threatened to fall. He knew what she would say.

“No!” Jack’s mother answered immediately. “You stay where you are. You have enough to deal with at work. I can take care of your father.” Jack remained quiet for a few seconds.

“Okay,” he finally said. “But keep me informed. I’ll jump on the next plane home if need be,” he added. But his mind was already made up. He couldn’t just let his parents deal with it on their own. It wasn’t fair. “I’ve gotta go get ready for work. I’ll speak to you later.” Saying his goodbyes and with the promise of an update later ringing in his ears, he ended the call. Remembering his bacon he rushed into the kitchen and turned the hob off, suddenly not having much of an appetite.

He couldn’t face work that day, knowing that everything was not right in his family. He could only imagine the pain his father was going through, not knowing if his own mother was going to pull through. Sandra Ruth-Hudson had always been there if the Hudson men needed to talk. Jack had often called her if he had a lot on his mind and needed help.

Picking up his cell phone he dialed his best friend’s number. There was only one person who knew of his close relationship with his grandmother. Praying that he was awake, Jack pressed the call button, willing Bobby to pick up.

“Sparky,” the Australian voice spoke. “To what do I owe this great pleasure, mate?”

“Bobby I… I’m going home for a few days,” Jack spoke into his cell. Bobby’s reply was instant.

“What’s happened mate?” he questioned. “Are your parents alright?” Bobby had met Jack’s parents on numerous occasions, having stayed at Jack’s parents in Wisconsin a few times.

Jack nodded. “Yeah they are… fine,” he faltered for a moment before continuing. “It’s my grandmother Crash,” he whispered, his voice cracking. “She’s back on hospital. They don’t know if she’ll make it…” he trailed off, drawing a deep breath into his lungs. Silence occupied the other end of the phone. “Bobby?” he asked as worry consuming him when his best friend didn’t answer. “You still there?” The sound of someone clearing their throat filled Jack’s ear.

“How’s your dad taking it Jack?” he asked quietly. Jack shrugged.

“I don’t know Crash,” he said. “Mom said that he’s gone up to see her.” He paused for a moment. “I don’t know what to do Bobby,” he finally said, pressing his thumb and index finger to the bridge of his nose. “I don’t want to leave my parents to deal with all of this on my own but I can’t just leave - not in the middle of such an important case-”

“Jack, this is different. They’ll let you leave for a couple of days on compassionate grounds. Go be with your family mate, we can handle the case.”

Jack swallowed. “Thanks Crash,” he whispered. “Just promise me one thing,” he quickly added. “If anyone asks, something’s come up and I’ve had to go back to Wisconsin.” Bobby promised faithfully he would. But he still had one issue.

“What about Sue?”

Jack frowned. Her face materialized in front of his eyes, her smile lighting up her eyes and her blonde tresses framing her creamy skin.

“Just keep an eye on her for me.” He said shortly. Saying his goodbyes, he ended the call and phoned D to let him know what was going on.

Thank you for lightening my worry load...a wee bit. But why didn't Jack want Sue to know? Doesn't he know how confusing that can be for everyone? Ack!!!

This is a time when Jack could really use Sue's comfort, but why it is that he chose not to share this with her when he first got the call?

I kinda changed my mind half-way through writing this part. It's slightly more angsty (feel free to up the rating if you see fit!! I'm no good with ratings and it's changed slightly since when I first started writing!) but I promise some explainations will come very shortly. Along with some fluff.

Before I post the rest of chapter 6, I'd like to give a big 'Thanks You!!' to my two friends, Holly and Cristina (neither of whom have accounts on this board unfortunately!) who have been my biggest cheering section whilst writing and been brilliant beta readers for me. Love you guys!!

On with Chapter 6!!

Chapter 6 Part B

3 Weeks Earlier…

Hudson Residence
Wisconsin

Jack opened the front door to his childhood home, stepping inside the familiar hallway. He closed the door behind him and looked up, seeing his mothers head peering out from one of the doorways. He dropped his travel bag to the floor and opened his arms. Colleen Hudson walked up to her only son, enveloping him in a tight hug. Jack held her close, allowing her a chance to regain her composure. He loosened his hold on her as she pulled back, wiping the suspicious trail of moisture from her cheeks.

“Jack, what are you doing here?” she asked. “I thought I told you to stay in D.C.” Jack allowed a fleeting smile to cross his face. Even though he had left home she knew how make him feel like he’d been caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

“Nice to see you too Mom,” he teased, pulling her into another hug. He released her and followed as she led him into the sitting room, the television in the corner on mute. He took a seat and looked at his mother, all playfulness having evaporated from his face.

“How’s grandma?” he asked seriously. He watched his mother’s shoulders tense slightly before answering him.

“There not been much change,” she admitted, not quite looking at him directly in the eye. “She’s still in a critical condition.” Jack raised his eyebrow, surveying his mother critically.

“Now tell me the truth,” he said, seeing straight through her pretence. Colleen sighed and smiled wanly.

“There’s no tricking you, is there Jackson?” she asked, giving a half-hearted attempt at a smile. “Lets just say there’s more to this that meets the eye.” She sat back on the sofa, her gaze trained upon the silent television. She wasn’t really watching it though. She was thinking about how best to break the news to her only son that his grandmother’s time on Earth was numbered.

“Jack,” she began gently. “I wasn’t truthful wit you on the phone.” She paused, her vision clouded by tears as they blinded her. Turned her head fearfully towards him she look him straight in the eye. “Jack, she wasn’t truthful with the doctors when it came to her symptoms. She has…” she broke off, unable to continue with the rest of the sentence.

“She has cancer.”

Jack’s head turned towards the door, looking at the owner of the voice. Richard Hudson stood in the doorway, looking like he hadn’t slept for a long time. There were bags under his dark eyes and his hair was on end, most likely from the amount of times he had run his hand through his hair in frustration. Even though he was getting on in years, Richard Hudson still looked good for his age. You could tell where Jack got his good looks.

“No…” Jack denied, looking from one parent to the other. “She can’t have…” Again he switched his gaze between the two elder Hudsons’ begging them to deny the claim. When neither was forth coming he slumped back in the chair, covering his face with his hands, muttering incoherently.

Jack felt his whole world crumble around him. Sandra Ruth-Hudson had been there from the beginning, catering to every whim that Jackson Samuel Hudson had throughout his life. It was hard to believe that the once strong-willed, determined woman was now in a hospital bed, the end of the road in sight. He felt a strong hand on his shoulder, offering a small amount of comfort.

Jack stood up, reaching for her cell phone.

“I have to call Bobby,” he said curtly, stepping out of the room, the weight of the world on his shoulders. Closing the sitting room door behind him he leaned against the wall, sliding down the length until he reached the floor, his body shaking uncontrollably.

Life was a cruel thing.
