Warm Memories
Winter must be cold with no warm memories (An Affair to Remember)
Chapter 1.
The snow swirled and the wind whistled through the streets, simultaneously attacking everyone and everything in its path. The wind tore at possessions and bit at exposed skin, determined to leave its mark wherever possible. The people who bravely attempted to walk the streets fought in vain to keep the impeding weather at bay, wrapping their coats tighter around them and covering any expanse of skin while the buildings stood tall and proud, determined to withstand anything Mother Nature threw at them. December was usually the month that often brought cold, and often treacherous, weather to the streets of Washington D.C. but this was the worst it had been for some years. The snow had decided to come early this year, falling in the month of November instead. Most of the roads were deserted; officials had recommended that people should not leave their home unless it was strictly necessary whilst the sidewalk that ran along either side of the road was buried under several inches of snow.
The snow was falling thick and fast, covering a track of freshly made footprints that littered the sidewalk. The prints seemed to meander aimlessly, as though the feet that had made them had no real idea where they were going. Within minutes the track was barely distinguishable as a fresh layer of snow coated the ground, completely hiding the trail from view.
A broad shouldered figure, slightly distorted through the falling snow, traipsed along the deserted sidewalk, hunched over with his head bowed. His hands were buried deep in his pockets, his dark hair flecked with white and his eyes were unfocused. His posture indicated a man with a lot on his mind; a man desperately hurt and confused.
The figure stumbled slightly, his hands sliding out of his pockets. He paused for a moment, regaining his composure. He looked up briefly, taking in his empty surroundings. He was glad. He didn’t want people looking at him, whispering to their companions at his disheveled state. He didn’t want their sympathy. He just wanted everything to be all right again. Taking another steadying breath, he continued his trek through the winter wonderland, barely noticing the white around him.
“You ready?” he asked, a smile playing upon his face. He couldn’t help but smile whenever he was around her. The way she laughed, the way she tended to everything she did with extra care and the way she was always focused upon what she was doing.
“Sure, just give me a minute.” He watched as she called out to the dark skinned woman at the other end of the room. He watched as she quickly conversed with her flat mate, explaining that she was going out and would be back later. He raised his eyes to glance at the woman, a knowing look residing in her eyes. He gave a warning look as he retrieved his companion’s jacket, offering to her.
What was it with matchmakers?
The man stumbled again, this time, free-falling to the unforgiving concrete. Stunned, the man lay on the floor, making no attempt to rise to his feet. He didn’t have the energy or the will power to do it. He lay face down, the snow soaking his pants, freezing the lower half of his body. He breathed in the musty smell of dirty through the layers of white that had cushioned his landing. He couldn’t move. He didn’t want to move.
With superhuman effort, he braced himself with his numb hands and pushed himself onto his knees, brushing flakes of snow mixed with grit off his face. He exhaled, a steam cloud rising in front of his face. All the while the snow continued to fall, replacing the flakes his had just brushed off. He bent his head as a wave of emotion engulfed him. Sobs wracked his body as he allowed the tears he had been holding back to fall freely, mixing with the snow.
“Jack?”
