Scarlet . . . what a beautiful comparison . . .

What a significant experience to share with anyone -- but to have it be your future spouse...wow...and yes we're being presumptuous but I'm sure you'll appease us, won't you?

Tracy, this continues to be awesome and beautiful!! What a perfect way for Bobby and Tara to meet - it's very obvious that they are soulmates!! You described the appearance of the angels wonderfully, just the right words to form a vivid picture, for us as well as Tara!!

Thank you, everyone, for your support on this story! blushing.gif

"Thank you, Joseph," one of the shepherds said. Bobby and I had walked into the stable just as several of the men kneeled beside the rough trough and stared at the child within. I felt my heart pump hard with excitement; it looked as if they were worshipping him.

They were worshipping him.

I felt Bobby's hand on my back and turned to face him. He was so handsome. "It looks like we're leaving," he said, almost sadly. I nodded but gave no reply when I heard the shepherds speak.

"Lord God," the same one whispered. "Thank you for showing us your Son, dear Father." Their absolute trust in this child's truth surprised me - I wondered how many would have not believed if an angel had come to them. As I looked back at Bobby, the pieces fell into place; if the angels had spoken their joyous news to anyone but lowly shepherds, it would be possible that they wouldn't believe. Rich men wouldn't want to comprehend and the chief priests would absolutely not believe. No King would understand and no Pharisee would care. I guess God knew what he was doing.

The other shepherds murmured something before standing, then turned to Mary. "May the Lord bless you," they whispered, one at a time before turning and walking in our direction. Even in the dim light, I could see the tears in their eyes and felt my own spring back.

"We're gonna leave now," the shepherd who had stood with Joseph said as he looked at Bobby. "You coming?"

I looked back to him and he seemed reluctant. At the sight, I said the first thing that I could think of. "He'll stay for a little while longer. He has to help me with some chores first." All their eyes turned to me and I shrank into the darkness.

Bobby's slightly accented voice quietly agreed with what I had said. "I'll catch up with you later," he said. The men exchanged a few more words before they turned away, each glancing over their shoulder for a final glance at the child they had come to see. When they had left the stable, I heard their excited laughs and the joy in their voices as they began to sing, praying aloud their joyous thanks. A smile spread across my lips. "So what help do you need?" Bobby asked, grinning.

I smiled, unsure if he would be upset by my meddling, and said, "You don't have to, I just wanted to let you stay - if you wanted."

I saw him nod. "I do want to stay."

"Tara?" Mary quietly asked.

I turned from Bobby and looked to the family a few feet away. Joseph was at Mary's side, his arms wrapped protectively around her as the exhausted young woman came close to drifting to sleep. However, the bed of straw and rags wasn't exactly the most comfortable accommodation.

"Yes?" I replied, walking to her.

Her tired eyes met mine and she smiled. "Would you please hold Jesus?" I was surprised and didn't speak. "He's tired but I don't think He'll sleep right away." When I saw her smile again, I knew that the only reason she asked was because she knew how badly I wanted to be with the child.

"All right, if you're sure," I said, nodding slowly. She quickly agreed and Joseph's smile matched hers. Even though I barely knew this couple, I already loved them. I walked to the manger's side and gently picked up the tiny baby. He made no sound, but instead watched me with the most beautiful and, dare I say it, intelligent gaze I had ever seen - especially in a mere child. "Would you like me to take Him outside so you can sleep?"

When no reply came, I looked to Mary and found her eyes closed. Joseph grinned and motioned to the door.

The baby, swaddled in cloths, moved against the wrappings, His pudgy arms moving above him in the direction of my hair. I had heard that babies often grabbed a handful of hair so I quickly moved it aside, but when I looked at Jesus, I found that he was not intent on my hair but instead my face. When I leaned down to place a kiss on his soft head, His small fingers touched my face.

I walked to Bobby's side, my eyes locked on this amazing baby. "Would you like to hold him?" I whispered, but my question was overcome by the 'moo' of a cow. I chuckled and repeated the question.

Bobby's eyes flew to mine. He seemed alarmed by my question; perhaps he had never held a baby before, but I knew how much he treasured this barely hours-old baby so I gently held the bundle out to him. He immediately took Him from me and held Him against his chest. The baby gave a contented sigh, His breath coupled with a shiver. Bobby wrapped the cloths over his shoulder.

"Let's go outside," I whispered. Bobby nodded and turned to the door. I quickly opened it for him and we stepped out. Everything was happening so quickly; as odd as it sounded, I felt myself falling in love with Bobby. I knew nothing about him, spare his name, but I felt as if we shared a connection that could have only been given by God himself. And since we were both witness to the first hours of life of God's own Son, what more of a connection could be given?

I stared at the tall man and the child wrapped in his arms and smiled. "Do you believe?"

He looked at me, his eyes shielded by tears. "In what?"

"That He's the son of God?"

Bobby didn't hesitate even one second. "Yes, I do."

I nodded slowly, agreeing. "Me too."

The baby squirmed and Bobby's large hand cradled His head, his fingers gently stroking the baby's soft forehead. "Do you think it's okay for Him to be out here now? I mean, He's so young." The concern in the shepherd's voice touched a place in me that had never been touched before.

"N-no, He should be fine. Besides," I said with a smile, "Maybe his real Father would like to see him."

Bobby's chuckle was somewhat strained from the emotion in his voice and I knew that he was overwhelmed by the thought that he was holding the Saviour of the world, the King of Kings, the King of the Jews. My own arms grew unsteady when he slowly lifted the baby into them. "I think he might want his Mom," Bobby quietly said at the baby's whimpers. I turned back to the stable but Bobby's quiet voice stopped me, though I didn't turn around. "Lord God, why me?"

Thanks to Cindy for her meticulous help with this story!

"Bobby, come on, we're moving."

I looked up from the dying fire and nodded to Jack. "I'll be right there." He stared at me for a moment then shrugged and turned back to his horse. After nearly a month in the open field, the nights spent staring at the sky and days watching the hundreds of sheep, our trip was over. The flock was being moved away from the valley, though I stayed behind a while longer.

This was beautiful land and I would truly miss it; and the experiences I had here still blazed in my memory. I still found it difficult to comprehend that, not only did I see angels, but I held the Son of God in my arms. I also couldn't comprehend why God allowed me to see him. I was not perfect in any way and there were many sins I had committed.

But, I suppose that's how God works. Even though we don't deserve him, we can still know him.

"Come on or we're gonna leave you behind."

I stood from my crouched position, kicked a pile of dirt onto the fire, immediately killing it, and turned to Jack. "I'm coming." I walked to where my horse patiently waited for me, mounted, and urged it toward the group of other men. Dimitrius, one of the shepherds who had rarely spoken after our experience, was staring behind us at the fire pit where the angels had come. "Amazing, isn't it?"

He looked at me, almost as if he were ashamed to be found looking, but then slowly nodded.

"Watch the left side, guys," Jack yelled above the bleating sheep. We knew that was our side so we quickly guarded the area, keeping all the animals from straying.

I would miss this terribly.

-

"Tara, look at Him."

I turned back and watched as Jesus took hold of His mother's hand, a toothless grin on his face. "He's so precious," I whispered. Mary picked up the baby and held Him tightly in her arms.

She stood from the stable's ground and walked to my side. "Tara, I have a question for you."

"Yes?" I asked, nodding.

"Well, you have been a most wonderful help with Jesus and everything I've needed you for and... as you know, Joseph has been searching for a home for us here, at least temporarily and -"

"He's found one?" I cut in, sadness in my voice. I did not want this wonderful family to leave; I had become dear friends with Mary and watching Jesus was my favourite pastime. I certainly did not want them to go.

Mary slowly nodded but her smile didn't seem to match my disappointment. "I want you to come with us; to live with us and help me with Jesus."

I'm certain that my mouth fell open. I glanced down to my rumpled dress and ran a hand over my unruly hair. "Are you sure you want that? I mean, I might scare away your neighbours."

She laughed as she rocked the baby in her arms, all the while His quiet cooing filled my ears. "If you're not afraid that I'll scare you away... I want you to come."

"Of course, I mean, yes, I mean, absolutely!" I stammered, excited beyond words to be able to spend more time with them. I reached out to hug her but stopped when I saw Jesus. Mary smiled and held out her free arm and wrapped me in a sideways hug. "Oh, Mary, I promise I will help you with anything that you need."

Mary touched my arm and said, "My dear friend, I don't need your help with much. As you've seen Jesus is a very easy baby."

My brow fell. "Then why do you need me?"

"Because if I don't say that I need your help, Joseph might not let you stay with us," she said with a wink.

I laughed, then lifted the baby into my arms when Mary held Him to me. Every time I held the small child, I felt my soul jump for joy. "Hello there, Jesus," I whispered to Him. His eyes met mine, his smile reflecting my own. When He giggled, I heard his mother do the same. I looked up at her and my eyes watered. I had been so blessed since that night many weeks ago. "Thank you, Mary. You know how much I love Him."

"Yes, I do." She nodded. "I only hope that Bobby won't mind riding an extra few minutes to find you."

A conscious smile curved my lips. "Well he claims that he loves me, so I hope that he won't mind." A knock on the stable door caught my attention. I handed Jesus back to his mother, and hurried to the door, expecting to find Marta. But instead, Bobby's tall figure loomed in front of the door. "Bobby!" I breathed when he pulled me into his arms. He stepped back and turned in a circle, my giggles filling the air. "Bobby, what are you doing here?"

When he set me down, I saw the childish grin on his face. "We're done with the sheep, Tara, and I got my pay, and now... I want to marry you."

I fought to keep my surprise hidden but it obviously didn't work because he laughed. "W-well, I, I mean, of course, but, I..." How could I explain to him that I so wanted to be with Jesus?

"Tara, I know."

"You know what?"

"That you're going to live with Mary and Joseph."

I nodded slowly. "Then how can I live with you?"

"I found a home nearby theirs."

My laugh echoed his. "Are you serious?" I asked.

He took my hands in his and looked at me with eyes so intense that I found myself lost in them. "Tara, will you marry me?"

I heard Mary come out of the stable behind us but I kept my eyes on his. "Yes, absolutely." Immediately his arms were around me again and he held me in a crushing embrace. "Yes," I whispered again, as if to tempt me to awake from this dream.

So many things that happened that were beyond my understanding; for one thing, the Roman that helped me on the night of Jesus' birth was never seen again. I had searched for him and found that there was no Roman to be found in this part of town. I can only assume that he was an angel, sent by God to give me strength so I would not miss the happenings of the night.

Oh, what a wonderful dream to be alive in!

I simply prayed that the warm memories would never end.

I’m catching up with 4 posts, Tracy and hope you had a blessed Christmas and Happy New Year! P3-43 – I love the tenderness of Bobby and the way he picked Tara up. You capture the wonder and awe of this moment so well. Awesome writing! P4-49 – Another beautiful post….the description of the angels was so touching and I loved the use of scarlet…symbolizing the blood of Jesus, sacrificed for our sins contrasted against the white robed angels. Beautifully done. Tracy.

P4-56 – I have to ditto Cindy! What better way to meet the love of your life than thru Jesus!

P5-62 –Such an amazing, powerful story, Tracy. Magnificent ending. I have to agree with Kav…this is a classic! And of course, I’lll follow the sequel in WIP. Flowers.gif blowkiss.gif

WOW Tracy, that was so special. babymakes3.gif How exciting and wonderfully you weaved our favorite ff characters into the lives of the most important people ever, especially, Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. girl_sigh.gif

To me the emotions you portrayed by Bobby, Jack, Myles and Tara meeting their Savior face to face as a babe in a manger were perfect. I could feel it with them.

My Christmas was difficult this year. I didn't get to go to NY and visit my kids and grandkids because of 3 surgeries keeping me home. Just wasn't the same. But this story definitely put me on cloud9.gif outstanding.gif thank you.gif

Tracy, you have really outdone yourself with this story!! Beautiful from beginning to end!! I love that Bobby married Tara, living close enough to Mary and Joseph so she could take care of Jesus!! And, I really think that the Roman soldier was just a plain old miracle!!!
