I had accidentally forgotten to add the needed paragraph so it can now be found in the second post
Thank you all so much for your support! I thoroughly enjoyed writing it and I hope you'll follow the sequel when it comes up in WIP
Thanks to Cindy for her meticulous help with this story!"Bobby, come on, we're moving."
I looked up from the dying fire and nodded to Jack. "I'll be right there." He stared at me for a moment then shrugged and turned back to his horse. After nearly a month in the open field, the nights spent staring at the sky and days watching the hundreds of sheep, our trip was over. The flock was being moved away from the valley, though I stayed behind a while longer.
This was beautiful land and I would truly miss it; and the experiences I had here still blazed in my memory. I still found it difficult to comprehend that, not only did I see angels, but I held the Son of God in my arms. I also couldn't comprehend why God allowed me to see him. I was not perfect in any way and there were many sins I had committed.
But, I suppose that's how God works. Even though we don't deserve him, we can still know him.
"Come on or we're gonna leave you behind."
I stood from my crouched position, kicked a pile of dirt onto the fire, immediately killing it, and turned to Jack. "I'm coming." I walked to where my horse patiently waited for me, mounted, and urged it toward the group of other men. Dimitrius, one of the shepherds who had rarely spoken after our experience, was staring behind us at the fire pit where the angels had come. "Amazing, isn't it?"
He looked at me, almost as if he were ashamed to be found looking, but then slowly nodded.
"Watch the left side, guys," Jack yelled above the bleating sheep. We knew that was our side so we quickly guarded the area, keeping all the animals from straying.
I would miss this terribly.

"Tara, look at Him."
I turned back and watched as Jesus took hold of His mother's hand, a toothless grin on his face. "He's so precious," I whispered. Mary picked up the baby and held Him tightly in her arms.
She stood from the stable's ground and walked to my side. "Tara, I have a question for you."
"Yes?" I asked, nodding.
"Well, you have been a most wonderful help with Jesus and everything I've needed you for and... as you know, Joseph has been searching for a home for us here, at least temporarily and -"
"He's found one?" I cut in, sadness in my voice. I did not want this wonderful family to leave; I had become dear friends with Mary and watching Jesus was my favourite pastime. I certainly did not want them to go.
Mary slowly nodded but her smile didn't seem to match my disappointment. "I want you to come with us; to live with us and help me with Jesus."
I'm certain that my mouth fell open. I glanced down to my rumpled dress and ran a hand over my unruly hair. "Are you sure you want that? I mean, I might scare away your neighbours."
She laughed as she rocked the baby in her arms, all the while His quiet cooing filled my ears. "If you're not afraid that I'll scare you away... I want you to come."
"Of course, I mean, yes, I mean, absolutely!" I stammered, excited beyond words to be able to spend more time with them. I reached out to hug her but stopped when I saw Jesus. Mary smiled and held out her free arm and wrapped me in a sideways hug. "Oh, Mary, I promise I will help you with anything that you need."
Mary touched my arm and said, "My dear friend, I don't need your help with much. As you've seen Jesus is a very easy baby."
My brow fell. "Then why do you need me?"
"Because if I don't say that I need your help, Joseph might not let you stay with us," she said with a wink.
I laughed, then lifted the baby into my arms when Mary held Him to me. Every time I held the small child, I felt my soul jump for joy. "Hello there, Jesus," I whispered to Him. His eyes met mine, his smile reflecting my own. When He giggled, I heard his mother do the same. I looked up at her and my eyes watered. I had been so blessed since that night many weeks ago. "Thank you, Mary. You know how much I love Him."
"Yes, I do." She nodded. "I only hope that Bobby won't mind riding an extra few minutes to find you."
A conscious smile curved my lips. "Well he claims that he loves me, so I hope that he won't mind." A knock on the stable door caught my attention. I handed Jesus back to his mother, and hurried to the door, expecting to find Marta. But instead, Bobby's tall figure loomed in front of the door. "Bobby!" I breathed when he pulled me into his arms. He stepped back and turned in a circle, my giggles filling the air. "Bobby, what are you doing here?"
When he set me down, I saw the childish grin on his face. "We're done with the sheep, Tara, and I got my pay, and now... I want to marry you."
I fought to keep my surprise hidden but it obviously didn't work because he laughed. "W-well, I, I mean, of course, but, I..." How could I explain to him that I so wanted to be with Jesus?
"Tara, I know."
"You know what?"
"That you're going to live with Mary and Joseph."
I nodded slowly. "Then how can I live with you?"
"I found a home nearby theirs."
My laugh echoed his. "Are you serious?" I asked.
He took my hands in his and looked at me with eyes so intense that I found myself lost in them. "Tara, will you marry me?"
I heard Mary come out of the stable behind us but I kept my eyes on his. "Yes, absolutely." Immediately his arms were around me again and he held me in a crushing embrace. "Yes," I whispered again, as if to tempt me to awake from this dream.
So many things that happened that were beyond my understanding; for one thing, the Roman that helped me on the night of Jesus' birth was never seen again. I had searched for him and found that there was no Roman to be found in this part of town. I can only assume that he was an angel, sent by God to give me strength so I would not miss the happenings of the night.
Oh, what a wonderful dream to be alive in!
I simply prayed that the warm memories would never end.
