Chapter 13

Myles

Before he could dole out his next order, Jack’s cell phone rang. “Hudson.” He paused. “Where?”

I leaned forward, trying to catch a snatch of the conversation.

“Highway 522 South. Got it. Tell the highway patrol to keep the car in their sights, but not to intercept unless absolutely necessary.”

Jack motioned to Bobby and I. “Come on. The car’s been spotted. It’s about sixty miles from here.”

The three of us piled into the SUV, and with the lights and sirens blaring, Bobby drove us down the highway. My head swam at every tilting turn. Why didn’t Jack drive? At least he slowed down a hair before the corners.

Jack glanced into the backseat. “How you holding up?”

“Peachy. I love putting my life in the hands of a man whose nickname is Crash.”

“At least that blow to the head didn’t destroy your awe inspiring wit, mate.”

A half hour later, Jack received a call from Tara confirming the vehicle did belong to Sarah Nelson. She and Sue were transporting Tom to the hospital, but had found out that Sarah was going to be fine. He then called the highway patrol and was connected directly to the unmarked patrol car dispatched to follow the Cruiser.

“We’re at mile marker 251. Good.” He turned to me. “We’re only fifteen miles behind them.”

I felt the SUV surge forward as Bobby picked up speed on a straightway. Maybe I should be glad Bobby was driving. If we arrived, we’d certainly arrive sooner.

He turned to Bobby to relay some more information in a hushed tone. “The driver is weaving. The officer thinks they may be too tired to drive or drunk.”

“Oh good grief. I hurt my head, not my ears. He hadn’t been drinking. I didn’t smell alcohol on his breath, and believe me, he was close enough that I could tell you he had nachos for lunch.” My stomach lurched at the memory of the acrid scent.

“The officer says the woman is driving.”

“Are they struggling?”

“No, he doesn’t think so.”

I held my breath, sending up some more unfamiliar prayers. I hoped that my awkward attempts were making it to heaven, because Alex needed all the help she could get.

“Mile marker 261,” Jack told the officer on the phone. “Guys, they’re just over the next rise.”

A long pause from Jack told me he was getting more information. “What? Why?” I heard the frustration and concern in Jack’s voice. “No, I repeat, ‘Do not intercept unless absolutely necessary.’”

He turned to me in the back seat as he withdrew his weapon from his shoulder holster. “Myles, they’re pulling over.”

Alex

I shoved the gearshift into park and reached for the door handle.

Sam gripped my arm like a vice. “Not so fast. We’ll both go out your door. Then, you’ll get back in like a good little girlfriend.”

“I’m not your girlfriend.”

My words earned me a freshly split lip and a spinning head. It was worth it. Even a little control felt good.

I slid out of the car. Sam held the gun to my side. “Move it.”

Car lights in the distance made me stiffen. Sam shoved me out of his way. My right foot slipped on the ice. Arms flailing, and my feet flew up and I crashed onto the gravel on the shoulder.

“Get up!” When I didn’t move right away, Sam kicked me in the ribs. “Get up!”

The car lights approached. I moved slowly, trying to time things right. Rolling onto my side, I moaned. I had made a decision which fisted my insides. When the next car passed, I would push Sam into the car’s path.

From my position on the ground, I could see the lights rapidly nearing. I acted like I was trying to stand, but collapsed. Sam kicked me again.

Suddenly, an SUV screeched to halt behind us. Doors swung wide and voices boomed. “Halt! F.B.I.!”

Never had I heard a sweeter sound.

Sam vaulted into the Cruiser. I rolled out of the way just in time to not be crushed by the spinning tires.

A second car sped by, lights flashing, to follow him. Seconds later, another followed.

Two agents flanked me on the ground. “Just lie still. An ambulance is on the way.”

“What?” I pushed myself up. “I don’t need an ambulance. Where’s Myles? Please, I have to know if he’s okay.”

“The blokes fine,” one of them said in an Aussie accent. “Well, as fine as a Harvard boy can get.”

Then, where was he? Maybe the fact I’d not told him the truth about my job had truly ended everything. Maybe he was hurt worse than the two agents assisting me would admit.

I held my side as the two men helped me stand, and when I turned, there he was.

Supermarvefantabulous! I was just glued to my screen through the entire post! There was so much to love here... I have to say how much I appreciate your 'take charge' protrayal of Jack - woof - and Bobby's wit, as usual, is just the thing to break the tension. But then of course, there's Myles. He's Myles on steroids or something... Uber Myles... Myles to the nth degree. What I mean is that he's still 'our' Myles, but there's something so much more. Perhaps we're just getting to see the man he was becoming when the show was ripped from our collective grips. He should have had an Alex all along...

Chapter 14

Myles

I couldn’t draw Alex into my arms fast enough. Everything in me wanted to hold her, shelter her, and protect her as if I could somehow make up for the torture of the last several hours. With her face pressed against my chest, I stroked her hair, breathing in her essence.

She shivered in my arms, and before I could ask for one, Jack or Bobby draped a blanket around her. I heard sirens in the distance and knew that the ambulance would arrive soon. Still, I could not release her.

When the flashing lights lit the scene and the din of the ambulance’s diesel engine stilled, I finally loosened my hold, but didn’t relinquish her. “The ambulance is here.” Cupping her cheek, I brushed my thumb over her swollen lip. “Where else are you hurt?”

Jack stepped closer. “He kicked her, Myles. She needs to get her ribs looked at.”

I dropped my glance to her side where she held a protective hand across her mid-section. “I don’t think anything’s broken.”

“Just let them take a look.”

I led her to the ambulance and soon we sequestered inside its warm interior. Still, violent shivering shook her. I knew it was the shock of the event combined with being in the cold wearing only pajamas. Flamingoes and umbrellas. I made a mental note to ask her if her secret dream was a vacation in the tropics. Right now, as cold as she was, I was tempted to book two flights for the morning.

The paramedics piled on blankets, checked her vitals, and assured me she’d be fine. I told them I was still riding along. I couldn’t let her out of my sight again. Not yet.

The ambulance’s engines roared to life. I glanced out the back window and didn’t see Jack and Bobby following. Apparently, they’d left to assist in the apprehension of Sam Johnson.

Alex squeezed my hand. “You look awful.”

I raised my eyebrows and smiled. “That’s the best you could do.”

“How bad did he hurt you?”

“Mild concussion. Penny heard the commotion and checked the peephole. Good thing you left the door ajar. She’s the one who found me. It’s nothing a little sleep won’t cure.” I ran my thumb over the smooth surface of her skin. Her hand remained icy cold. I frowned. “Why isn’t she warming up?”

“She will,” the paramedic said. “Mild Concussion meet Mild Hypothermia. You make a lovely couple.”

A smile graced Alex’s face, but the movement of her lip made her wince. “I was so scared for you.”

“Me? A madman was driving you across country and you were afraid for me?”

She nodded. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you the truth earlier.”

“Sssh. We can talk about all that later. I don’t think I’ve ever been so afraid.“

“Not even when you got shot?”

“Not even then. You were so brave, so smart. You led us to you.”

Her eyes started to close. I grabbed the paramedic’s arm. “Should she go to sleep?”

“If you aren’t going to tell her you love her, then why shouldn’t she?” The man reminded me of a certain irritating Aussie and I glared at him. “Relax. It’s a good sign. She’s warming up, and all that adrenaline that’s been driving her is wearing off.”

When we reached the hospital, the doctor refused to let me in the examination room. Tara and Sue met me in the waiting room.

Sue gave me a warm hug. How she can covey so much in a hug, is beyond me. “You okay?”

I shrugged. “Certainly better now.”

Tara hugged me, too, and the three of us sat down. Tara passed me an insulated cup filled with piping hot coffee. “The guys called and said you were on you way.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a figure approaching. I turned to see D. For some reason when our supervisor pulled me into a bear hug, I felt tears prick my eyes.

What was happening to me? I didn’t get moved by physical displays of affection. If I kept this up, I’d be crying at sappy movies. A year ago, this wouldn’t have happened. Even two weeks ago. But Alex was waking something in me.

Or maybe I was just exhausted, concerned, and in pain.

Yes, that was probably it.

~*~*~

Alex

I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I answered the doctor’s questions, endured her prodding, and moved to insane positions for an injured person during the x-rays, but after each thing, I returned to sleep within seconds. More warm blankets had been added when I arrived, and now, I finally felt warm from my head to my toes.

Opening my eyes when I heard the door open, I saw Myles enter. Lines creased his face and pain still flickered in his eyes. He should be in bed, I was certain.

He rubbed my cheek, my only exposed skin, with the back of his hand. “Hey, how are you feeling?”

“Warm. The doctor said I could go home. Nothing broken.”

The corners of his mouth lifted. “She talked to me too, and what she said was that you have two cracked ribs. She said you’ve been through an emotional ordeal and need a lot of rest, at least a week off, and you she doesn’t want you returning to the scene of your abduction.”

“I can go to Penny’s. Penny!” I tried to sit up and immediately regretted the attempt. I fell back down. “She’ll be worried sick.”

“I already called her. She’s bringing some of your things over to my place.”

“Why?”

“You’re staying there.”

“Oh no, I’m not.”

He sighed. “I have plenty of room for both you and Penny. She’s offered to stay if it’ll make you feel more comfortable, but since she doesn’t have a guest room, we both agreed my place was a better option for your recovery.”

“You did this all without consulting me?”

“Sorry, bad habit.”

“Break it.”

“In the future, I will, but for now, please just let me do this.”

It was wrong on so many levels. We’d only known each other for a week. He needed to be taking care of himself. I didn’t spend the night at a man’s house. But when I looked in Myles eyes, none of that mattered.

“I’ll probably be an emotional wreck.” He deserved the warning.

“I know.”

“I’m stubborn.”

“I know.”

“I’m not a morning person.”

“I figured.”

“And only for a couple of days," I managed as I fought sleep's grip.

“Agreed.”

The whole conversation completely drained me. I closed my eyes. “Too tired to argue any more,” I slurred. “Just get me out of here and let me sleep.”

Chapter 15

[i]Alex

When I woke, I felt a surge of panic in the unfamiliar room. Then, I remembered the pillow-topped mattress and sateen sheets belonged to Myles, and I was at his house. I vaguely recalled the doctor giving me a shot of a painkiller and then leaving the hospital.

Rolling to the side, I moaned audibly. Every muscle ached, but my ribs hurt the most. I sat up slowly, and swung my legs over the side of the bed. The hospital had let me take the dark green hospital scrubs I’d changed in to. With my red hair, I looked like a bad Christmas decoration.

I turned to the nightstand to check the time and found a glass of juice and a note. Picking it up, I saw Myles handwriting for the first time. Was it fair to analyze it? Then again, I’d had this conversation with myself once before. That time, I’d decided not to, and I’d ended up with a stalker.

I gave into the temptation, and studied the note.

The first thing a handwriting analyst does is get an overall feeling for the person, like when you study a painting and get a feeling for the artist. I determine the person’s emotional energy by how much pressure they use. I person who writes with a light hand, doesn’t put much energy into anything they do—emotionally or physically.

Myles wrote with a lot of pressure. To me, it signified his emotional feelings last a long time, and a person who writes with a heavy hand is usually highly successful.

Next, I looked at the slant. People who write with a right slant, signals someone who responds emotionally to things. They are usually caring, warm, and outgoing. A left slant tells me they try to conceal their emotions and they are often viewed as cold and indifferent. Myles slant was vertical with a slight backslant. This told me he tries to keep his emotion in check. His mind generally rules over his heart.

Putting things together, I knew Myles would be a person who tries to keep his emotions in check. In a dangerous situation, he’d keep his wits about him. His head would rule. But I also knew that he wouldn’t be able to keep himself together all the time. A person who writes with a heavy hand and a vertical slant may fly off the handle at unpredictable times.

I considered myself warned.

I now simply read his words.

“Good morning or should I say good afternoon.

Penny is at work. Your things are in the bathroom off the guest room. I left the juice because I imagine you’re famished. If you need me, call. I’ll be there in seconds. Come down when you’re ready, and I’ll make you breakfast.

Happy you’re here.

Myles.”

My stomach growled, and I decided I’d learned enough. Sure the shape of his letters, the way he crossed a “t” and even the size of the first letter of his signature would tell me more about him, but I decided I wanted to learn it the old-fashioned way.

After showering and putting on fresh clothes, I gingerly descended the stairs, leaning much more heavily on the railing than I liked. Myles must have heard my movements because he stood at the bottom of the stairs. To his credit, he said nothing about me walking like a ninety-year-old woman, and even better, he didn’t ask if I needed any help.

He met me and kissed my cheek. “Morning.”

“Really? What time is it, anyway?”

“About ten.”

“In the morning?”

“Yes. You slept for twenty-eight hours.”

“You’re kidding.” He raised his eyebrows, and I noticed he did look much better himself. “No wonder I’m starving.”

“Then, I’d better feed you.” He led me into the kitchen, and directed me to have a seat at the island.

I ran my hand along the brown marbled surface. Marble. Very classy.

“What do you like in your omelet?”

He rattled off a list of possible ingredients which would have made Martha Stewart proud. He seemed pleased when I chose a collection of veggies along with prosciutto ham and provolone cheese.

Within minutes he’d whipped up a delicious creation and presented it to me along with a baked applesauce muffin and fresh fruit. I took a bite of the muffin. “This is terrific. When did you go out and get these?”

He frowned. “I’ll have you know that I made those. I had to do something while I waited for you to wake up.”

“If I remember right, you’re supposed to be resting, too.”

“I thought we could rest together.” His cheeks colored when he realized what he’d said. “You know what I mean.”

“I do.” I forked a bite of the omelet. “Any coffee?”

“Better.” He poured a cup of hot chocolate from an insulated carafe. “I made a lot because I wasn’t sure if you’d still be cold.”

“Thank you.” Myles took a seat beside me and watched while I polished off the omelet in record time. “Myles, we still have something to discuss.”

“It doesn’t matter anymore.”

“But you said it did. Why?”

“Why doesn’t it matter or why did it before?”

“Both.”

He released a long sigh and refilled my hot chocolate. “I had decided I didn’t want to date anyone in the Bureau. I wanted to keep my worlds separate.”

“Because of Lucy?”

“How did you know?”

“I sensed it when you told me about the team.” I sipped at the steaming liquid.

“I cheated on her while we were dating.” He fiddled with a knife on the island. “That embarrasses me to admit. I’ve changed a lot sense she and I dated. I wouldn’t do the things today that I did then.”

“I believe you.”

“So, you were afraid I’d find out?”

“No. It’s just hard to see someone everyday if things don’t work out.”

“But that hasn’t changed. Are you sure you’re okay with my job?”

“I am for two reasons. First of all, after seeing the way you handled yourself yesterday, I have no doubt the F.B.I. is where you belong, and second, and most importantly, I realized you’re worth the chance.”

I stood up and walked to the bay window. Snow fell softly on his backyard. I tried to imagine the manicured bushes lush in the spring. “I need to explain why I didn’t tell you.”

“I think I’ve figured that out already.”

“Probably most of it, but not all.” Suddenly chilled again, I wrapped my arms around myself. “I came here and got the job at the F.B.I. because I thought it might scare Sam from following me. I hoped he wouldn’t find me, but if he did, I thought the fact that I was a federal employee would deter him. Back home, he had a captain that covered for him. Here, he wouldn’t stand a chance.”

“But he was sicker than you realized.”

“I left home because he threatened my family.” My voice cracked and I swallowed the lump in my throat. “I didn’t want him to hurt anyone because of me. I didn’t plan on getting involved with anyone.”

Myles approached me from behind and wrapped his arms around me. “Then, God upset both our plans.”

I leaned into his embrace. “I feel so guilty about him hurting you.”

“It wasn’t your fault.” He kissed the top of my head. “But we do need to work on your checking the peephole before opening the door.”

I laughed a little. Then, a surge of panic hit me. I turned in his arms to face him. “Myles, what happened to Sam? Did they catch him?”

“He won’t bother you again.”

“They arrested him?”

His Adam’s apple bobbed. “He wrecked the P.T. Cruiser in the pursuit. He didn’t survive.”

I swayed, and he held me tighter. A tear trickled from my eye, and my anger surged. “Why do I care?” I practically shouted. “Why do I care what happened to him? He made my life miserable. He drove me from my home. He made me jump at every corner. He almost killed you. What kind of a person does that? Why do I care if he died?”

“Because you’re you.”

I didn’t resist him when he pulled me into his him embrace. Suddenly, the enormity of the situation seemed to overwhelm me, and I sobbed. Uncontrollably. My whole body shook and I couldn’t control it. Somehow in the next half hour, we ended up in the living room. When my tears were spent, Myles gently prodded me to talk about what had happened after we left my apartment. I ended up telling him everything—from how Sam and I met to how bad things became before I left. I told him about Sam’s threats and the blood and hair I’d left in the truck “just in case.”

The whole cathartic experience left me exhausted again. He pressed my head to his shoulder, drew a blanket around the two of us, and told me to go to sleep.

“Here?”

He nodded.

My head told me I barely knew this man.

My heart told me differently.

I write with a right slant. My heart won, and I surrendered to sleep in his arms.

Chapter 16

Two days later, I descended the stairs again into Myles’ waiting arms. However, this time I moved with a bit more graceful and was dressed fancier. How Penny had known to pack my black skirt, gold sweater, and heels, I didn’t know. She didn’t return after work that day. She’d simply called to check on me and made some lame excuse as to needing to clean out her closets. Then, she’d called everyday to see how things were going. Myles claimed she’d give Lucy a run for a money on match making.

Myles had postponed the surprise involving his team until tonight. As I hobbled down the stairs, butterflies fluttered in my stomach. They went well with the ache in my side.

“Ready?” Myles asked, taking my arm.

“You tell me.”

“You look stunning.”

“That’s not what I meant. This is the first time I’ll be meeting your family.”

“My fam—Oh, yes, I guess that’s true.” He opened the door for me.

I stopped on the front porch and gasped. A limo sat waiting at the end of the walk.

“What is this?”

“We’re taking a ride in the stars tonight. A special Christmas lights tour.” He ushered me down the sidewalk, and the limo driver held the door. Inside, I recognized the two agents from the other night which I’d figured were Jack and Bobby. I could easily place the others, partially by whom they sat by, and partially by all the things Myles had told me about them.

I slid next to Lucy. She grabbed my arm. “Girlfriend, we need to have a nice long talk. The things I can tell you.”

Myles shot her a warning look, and I giggled. “I’d like that.”

“Don’t worry, Myles. I’ll keep the bad stuff to a minimum.”

“Thanks, Luce.”

As we ate pizza inside the limo, I met them each in turn. Sue was as sweet as I thought she’d be, but I didn’t know how she resisted those eyes of Jack’s. Gracious. She must be stronger than she looked. Bobby lived up to his Bureau reputation as charming, and his accent was dreamy.

I loved Tara, a kindred spirit of sorts, and looked forward to spending more time with her. When had I come to thinking of a future with Myles?

“Alex, did Myles tell you about the time he started taking vitamins?” Bobby asked.

Tara elbowed him. “Remember, you promised. No Myles stories.”

“It’s okay, Tara.” Myles draped his arm around me. “I have just as many about Koala Boy if he wants to play that game. Even some you don’t know about.”

The banter between the two men continued and I laughed until my sides hurt. Well, given my current physical condition, that didn’t take long.

The limo driver took to our first stop—the Festival of Lights at the Mormon Temple. The driver explained it contained 450,000 lights. While I found it breath taking, it was the live nativity scene which brought tears to my eyes. I noticed it did the same to Sue.

We drove through the illuminated capital, stopping at the National Christmas tree. I took a picture on my cell phone to send home. I could hardly believe I was seeing it in person.

Our final stop was the Winter Lights Festival at Seneca State Park. Themed areas welcomed us. A Victorian Village, a Winter Wonderland, a Teddy Bear Land, and even a North Pole. Myles had the driver stop at the Wizard of Oz display, and the two of us got out. No one seemed surprised.

We walked out of the limo’s view until we were beneath large hot air balloon.

“Remember what happened here in the movie?” he asked.

“Dorothy clicked her heels and went home.”

“Try it.”

I stared up into Myles eyes, dark in the night, his face illuminated by the bright lights on the balloon. I licked my lips. “I don’t know if I want to go home anymore.”

He cupped my cheek, stroking it with his thumb. “I love you, Alex Walton, but you’re going to spoil my Christmas gift.”

“Do you mind?”

“Not at all.” He dipped his head, and with infinite care, kissed me until my body melted into his in sweet oblivion. The fire of his first kiss consumed me like twigs on a bon fire.

He pulled back. “Maybe we should both click our heels and go home to Kansas together.”

“Oh?”

“Yes, I believe I have something to ask your father.”

My head shouted, “It’s too soon.”

My heart whispered, “Not really.”

He kissed me again and my heart soared. I loved this man. It scared me to death, but I did.

When the kiss broke, I took a deep breath and listened to my heart. “I love you, too, Myles Leland the Third. When do we leave?”

Congratulations Oreo!

I VERY much enjoyed every bit of this wonderful story - I know you don't want to hear it, but you should "write under pressure" more often! (Not that I don't love the stories you write at your leisure...) I guess the reason I'm so impressed with this one is that normally if Jack and Sue aren't at least featured prominently, my eyes kind of glaze over and I wander off, searching for my favorite couple. But you more than held my interest, you made me fall in love with Myles and root enthusiastically for Alex.

Again, congratulations on completing it on time, and THANK YOU for joining the challenge!!

What a fabulous story Lorna!! A wonderfully exciting plot with twists and turns and of course, some romance thrown in. I definitely loved the Myles that you portrayed here. He's very much the man I saw him turning into when the series ended (which I will NEVER forgive PAX for!). And Alex...well, what can I say...you've created such a wonderful character here. I must admit that I'm not one for sequels, but I would love to see Alex and her relationship with Myles continue. I would love to see how see fits in at the F.B.I. and the team (and how THEIR relationships continue to grow). Maybe we'll see some more of Alex in 2009???????
