“Don’t tell me the heat’s out again!” Lucy said shivering as she walked into the bullpen.

“Ok the heat is not out again, it is merely temporarily disabled.” Bobby said jovially.

“Very funny.”

“I try my best.”

“Heads up boys and girls we’ve got a hot one.” Jack said walking into the office.

“Anything is warm compared to in here.” Myles complained.

“This is serious. We have suspicions that money is disappearing from accounts at First National Bank.”

“They can’t prove it?” Myles asked.

“Not exactly, the computers are being messed with, so it’s hard to tell. But when a high-powered senator says something it has to be investigated.” Jack concluded.

“Is anyone else suspicious?” Bobby asked.

“That’s what we get to find out. Tara I need you to get a hold of the bank and get a list of people with accounts there, especially senators. We would not like to alert the public at this time, we don’t want to cause a run.”

“Already on it. I’ll get banking statements as well.” Tara said.

“Sue, you and I are going to interview the senator. Everyone else take orders from Tara as she gets information.” Jack said then he and Sue walked out the bullpen door.

“Man, does anyone else notice that Jack somehow always conveniently pairs himself with Sue?” Bobby asked taking a file out of his drawer.

“He is her training agent.” Myles said.

“Yeah but she’s been here long enough not to need one.” Bobby said.

“Well I think it’s a good thing. Maybe one of these days they’ll realize how much they mean to each other and do something about it.” Lucy said.

“That’ll be the day. Those to can’t see past the ends of the noses when it comes to that. It’ll be some assignment from somewhere much higher than us that gets those two to wizen up.” Bobby said.

“And until that day we can only humor them.” D said.

“That means we need Lucy to do some snooping.” Bobby said.

“I’ve tried. I’ve got nothing but smiles and a “We’re just friends.”

“That’s all Jack says too.” Bobby said. “Wouldn’t it be funny if they were dating this whole time and never let it slip. Then one day she walks in with a nice ring on her finger.”

“If only…”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Hi we’re here to Senator John Daniels.” Jack said to the secretary.
“Just a minute. Please have a seat.”
“So you think they’ve figured it out yet?” Sue asked.
“I don’t know. We’ve given them some pretty big hints.” Jack said smiling at the blonde beside him.
“Senator Daniels will see you now.”
“Thank you.” Jack said as he and Sue rose from their seats.
“Hi.” The Senator said shaking their hands. “You must be Agent Hudson, and Miss. Thomas.”
“Yes sir.” Jack replied.
“Good to meet you.” Sue greeted.
“Let’s get down to business, shall we.” The Senator said taking a seat and Sue and Jack did the same.
“You said that you have had money missing from your account?” Jack said.
“Yes that’s correct. I keep very close records of how much money I put in the bank and how much I take out.”
“When did you start noticing a discrepancy?” Sue asked.
“About a month ago. But I thought maybe my wife had taken some out and forgot to tell me. But when it happened again I took another look and something was off.”
“Could we get a copy of your bank statement when the money was deposited?” Jack asked.
“Yes, but you see that’s part of the problem. The amount deposited isn’t the same amount as my salary. I even doubled checked with the people who handle it.”
“We’ll need a statement from them as well.” Sue said.
“No problem. Now I understand that you would like me to not go public with this. And I just wanted to let you know that I will not.”
“Thank you. And we will do our best to get this wrapped up quickly.” Jack said rising.
“I appreciate that. Have a nice day.”
“You too.” Sue said and she and Jack headed back to his car.
“So Tara what did you find?” Jack asked as the team met in the bullpen.
“At the moment not much. The bank should be sending me the stuff today, then everyone will have to help me look through it.” Tara said as groans went around the room.
“Come on, not more paperwork.” Bobby complained.
“The quicker you go through the papers the sooner we get this case done…” Jack started, and then Sue continued.
“And the less likely it will be to interfere with any holiday plans you might have.”
“Hmm….” Bobby thought as Lucy came over.
“Sorry to interrupt…”
“It’s ok, we’re done.” Jack said.
“Garret wants you and Sue in his office when you’re done here.” Lucy said smiling.
“Thanks. Sue?”
“Coming. Bye guys.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“I expect no one else knows about this yet?” Garrett asked the agents seated in front of him.

“No sir.” Jack said.

“Good. Good. I’ve already cleared everything.”

“Thank you sir.” Sue said.

“It was no problem, you deserve it. Just let me know when you set a date. And if there is anything you need help with.” Garrett said warmly.

“We will sir.” Sue said.

“And thank you. I’m sure everyone will be surprised.” Jack said as he and Sue exited their superior’s office.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“What did Garrett want?” Lucy asked her best friend as they ate lunch.
“Nothing big. We just needed a couple things cleared.” Sue said taking a bite of her sandwich.
“Oh. So do you want to have a movie night tonight?” Lucy asked. “We can rent a bunch of romance comedies, some tear-jerkers and eat ice cream and wish we were lucky enough to find a guy like Tom Cruise.”
“Uh…” Sue started but Lucy kept going.
“But then again, why would you need to wish that when you have Jack right?” Lucy asked.
“What?! No Lucy. I…”
“Then where have you been the last couple nights you’ve been out?”
“Out…”
“Fine, so movie night?”
“I can’t.” Sue said.
“Why? We shouldn’t have work tonight.” Lucy said.
“I’m going out tonight. I already made plans. And no I can’t say who with.” Sue said as she dumped her trash.
“Ok. What about tomorrow night?”
“That works for me.” Sue said and they headed back to the Hoover building.
Continued December 2, 2004
“We’ve been looking through this for three hours.” Bobby said putting more papers in the checked pile.
“Ok everyone, it’s five o’clock lets break for today, then we’ll start back at it tomorrow.” D said standing up and stretching.
“Works for me.” Bobby said walking out of the conference room.
As Sue walked over to her desk Jack walked up and had Levi get Sue’s attention.
“Hey you ready to go?” Jack asked.
“Yeah, let me get my coat.” Sue said reaching for it.
“Let me help.” Jack helped Sue put her coat on then the two walked out the door leaving a very curious Lucy and Tara.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“So what do you think?” Sue asked Jack as they sat on his couch.

“I don’t know, I think I like the red better.” Jack said appraisingly.

“Me too.”

“This is good.” Jack said taking a bite of the lasagna Sue fixed.

“Thanks. I don’t get to cook that often anymore.”

“Well you’re welcome to come over and cook anytime you want.” Jack said taking another bite.

“Thanks for the invite. But why don’t you just learn to cook yourself?”

“Because it’s not fun to cook for one person. And anyway who says I can’t cook?” Jack said.

“I do.” Sue said laughing.

“What’s so funny?” Jack asked.

“I just pictured you in the kitchen trying to cook.” Sue said still smiling.

“Ok Miss. Thomas you asked for it. I am going to prove to you that I can cook.” Jack said.

“Oh really, and just how do you plan on doing that?” Sue asked.

“By cooking you dinner tomorrow night.” Jack said.

“Well I’m in luck. I happen to have plans tomorrow night.” Sue said.

“With who?” Jack said almost defensively.

“Lucy. We’re ordering pizza and watching movies.” Sue said.

“Oh. Well I guess it will just have to wait.” Jack said picking up his plate and taking it to the kitchen. As he was loading it in the dishwasher Sue came in.

Jack’s abrupt change in manner had confused Sue. One minute they were getting along great, and the next he just got up and left. Then she realized that this man’s actions rarely made sense right away, at least to her more and more recently. Lately she had discovered that it was getting harder and harder to concentrate around him. With these thoughts she got up and followed him into the kitchen. Even though his back was turned to her she could see him take a deep breath then turn around.

“Hey let me take that.” Jack said grabbing Sue’s plate.

“Thanks.” She said smiling. As she stepped closer to him she could smell is cologne and became lost in her thoughts.

Friday December 3, 2004

“Have we found anything yet?

“One paper that might be of significance.” Tara said.

“That’s it?”

“Yep. So far.” Tara said returning to her stack.

The team had been taking shifts looking through the papers since they got to work that morning and it was now almost lunch time. The papers were computer statements of numbers and accounting information with all sensitive information edited out.

“You know if the person who committed this alleged crime is the one who edits these papers then the search is fruitless.” Myles said.

“Well we have to keep looking.” Tara said then after a minute added, “Oh I give up I’m going to lunch. Anyone want to join me?”

“Sure.” Lucy, Bobby, and Myles agreed.

“Lets go ask the others.”

As they walked into the bullpen they found Jack and Sue sitting next to each other looking over reports. D, on the other hand, was talking on the phone, but hung up when the rest of the team walked in.

“Did you guys go on strike or something?” D asked as they all grabbed their coats and while Bobby walked over to Jack and Sue, who both looked up as he did so.

“No we came to see if you wanted to join us for lunch.” Lucy said.

“Yeah but we’re sorry Sparky, we didn’t mean to interrupt anything.” Bobby said giving him a wink.

“You didn’t. We were just looking up some background on our Senator.” Jack said closing the file.

“Well since we’re not, do you and the lovely lady want to join us for lunch?”

“Ah…” Jack and Sue gave each other a quick glance. “I can’t I have a meeting.” Jack said.

“Well what about you Sue? Up to braving it with the rest of us?” Bobby asked eagerly waiting her reply.

“Actually I have a lunch date in thirty minutes.” Sue said. “So I really should be going now. You never know how bad the traffic will be.”

“Ok then, we’ll see you later.” Tara said as the team walked out the door.

“We probably should have gone with them.” Jack said.

“Yeah it makes us look kind of suspicious.” Sue said.

“Just a little. So are you ready?” Jack asked getting his coat.

“Starved.”

“Then let’s go.” Sue took Jack’s proffered arm and they walked out the door toward the elevator.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Hey Lucy is Sue still dating David?” D asked as they ate lunch.
“No, they broke up months ago. Why?”
“Do you know who Sue’s lunch date could have been with?”
“No, maybe Troy or Charlie. Why?” Lucy asked.
“Well you know how I had to run back up to get my cell phone? Well as I was getting off the elevator on the office floor I noticed Jack and Sue were leaving together.” D said hesitantly.
“So?” Lucy asked.
“On each other’s arm.” D said.
Saturday December 4, 2004
“So give me an update.” Garrett directed to Jack and Tara.
“Well we have one document that could mean something once we get the Senator’s records.” Tara said.
“Unfortunately we won’t be getting those till Monday.” Jack said.
“I see so all is depending on those reports.” Garrett said.
“Yes.” Jack said.
“Well then I suppose that means you can all go home now and I wouldn’t bother coming in tomorrow either.” Garrett said.
“Yes sir.”
As Jack and Tara stood up Garrett said, “Oh and Jack how are those plans going? Got a date set yet?”
“We’re getting together tonight to decide.” Jack said smiling.
“Good. I expect an answer Monday morning.” Garrett said. “You can leave now.”
As they walked out the door Tara asked, “What was he talking about?”
“Um, nothing. Something between me and another…person.” Jack said as they walked back into the bullpen to deliver the good news. Jack signed to Sue “We talk now,” as Tara started speaking.
After learning of the good news the team gathered their stuff and Lucy walked over to Sue’s desk as Jack signed something else. “Dinner tonight, me drive now.”
Lucy caught this as well as his earlier sentence and was quite curious. “Hey Sue, you ready to go?” Lucy asked.
“Ah, actually I’ve got some errands to run, could you go ahead and drive my car back.” Sue asked.
“Sure, but don’t you need your car to run errands?”
“No, they’re all within walking distance and they spread out pretty evenly from here to the apartment.” Sue said hoping that came out right.
“Ok. I’ll see you soon then.”
“Well, I might be awhile.” Sue said. “I might be meeting a friend for dinner. I’ll call and let you know.”
“Ok. Bye.” Lucy said then walked out the door.
“That was close.” Jack said.
“Just a little. I can’t wait till we can tell them.”
“Well it won’t be much longer. Garrett wants a date on Monday and I told him we’d have one.” Jack said. “And he also asked it right in front of Tara.”
“What’d she say?”
“She asked what he was talking about. I told her it was something between me and someone else.”
“You might have well as told her it was me. She’ll have it figured it out by tonight if she hasn’t already.” Sue said putting on her coat. “So where are you taking me for dinner, Mr. Hudson?” Sue asked as they walked toward the elevator.
“For me to know and you to find out, Miss Thomas.” Jack said pushing the button for the elevator.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Jack this is your apartment!” Sue said.

“I know.” Jack said getting out of the car and going to open Sue’s door. “I told you I was going to prove I could cook.” Sue looked at him skeptically. “I promise it will be fine.”

As they stepped into his apartment Sue let Levi off his leash and he ran straight to the chair that had been designated for him. Jack told Sue to go wait in the living room, that he would be right back he was just going to change out of his suit. “Oh and this is yours.” Jack said tossing her a familiar bag.

“Where did you get this?” Sue asked.

“I had Lucy get it this morning.” Jack said.

“So you planned on kidnapping me?” Sue said smiling at how considerate he’d been.

“Not kidnapping just merely indefinitely borrowing.” Jack said with a smirk, glad she wasn’t mad.

“Seriously, how did you do it?” Sue asked.

“I knew you kept a spare change of clothes in your car, in fact I believe that was actually my idea from a couple cases ago.”

“Get on with it.”

“So this morning I told Lucy that you said you need your bag of clothes from your car and that you told me to ask her to get it for you.” Jack said.

“Then why didn’t she give it to me?”

“Because when she came back in I told her you were in a meeting and that I would make sure you got it.” Jack said.

“Thanks.” Sue said.

“I figured you wouldn’t want to stay in those clothes the rest of the day.” Jack said.

“Just how long are you borrowing me for?”

“As long as I decide to. The bathroom’s all yours.” Jack said turning around and heading to his room.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“So?”
“Not bad. I guess you can cook.” Sue admitted.
“Thank you.”
“So, when do we want to do this?” Sue asked taking a bite of chicken.
“Not Christmas day.” Jack said.
“Right. To many people have plans on that day.”
“And we’re not giving them a lot of warning.” Jack agreed.
“What about Christmas Eve?” Sue suggested.
“I like it. Perfect day.”
“Now we just have to let everyone know.” Sue said.
“Come on it won’t be that bad, they should all be excited.” Jack said taking her hand.
“I hope so, what else do we need to work out?”
“Food?” Jack said causing Sue to laugh.
“Is that all you think about?”
“No…. never mind.” Jack said thankful he caught himself.
“What?” Sue asked.
“Nothing, it would just get me in more trouble.” Jack said. “You want to watch a movie?”
“Sure. But you know you’re very accommodating for a kidnapper.” She said.
“I know, but I’m pulling rank and I get to chose the movie.”
Sunday December 5, 2004
“That was a nice service.” Lucy said as they walked into their apartment after church.
“Yeah it was.” Sue agreed taking off her coat.
“So you never told me where you went last night?” Lucy said.
“Oh. I thought I did.” Sue said.
“No, so?”
“I had dinner with a friend.”
“A close friend?”
“Yes.” Sue said.
“Very close?” Lucy pushed.
“I suppose so.”
“Come on, aren’t you going to tell me who it was?”
“No. You’ll find out soon enough.”
“Fine. So what do you want for lunch…”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Monday December 6, 2004

“Have we got the Senator’s records yet?” Jack asked Tara as he walked into the bullpen.

“Just arrived.” Tara said handing him the file.

“It doesn’t match!” Jack said with excitement.

“I know.”

“I think we need to see Garrett. You want to come?”

“Sure.” Tara said picking up her stuff.

The two headed out the door as Sue and Lucy walked in.

“I wonder where they were headed in such a hurry?” Lucy said.

“No clue.”

Upon barely reaching the door Jack knocked with some urgency. And a voice from within beckoned them in.

“Yes.”

“We found the discrepancy. It’s not substantial but it is quite a difference.” Jack said handing him the files.

“I see. Hmmm…. Ok I’ll get back to you on how to go about this, it is going to be quite tricky.”

“Yes sir.”

“Tara, please go brief the rest of the team. Jack, I need you and Thomas back in here ASAP. You can fill Sue in over lunch. I’m sure you have some planning to do.” Garrett said with a wink.

“Yes sir.” Jack and Tara excited the office and headed back to the bullpen.

“Sue, Garrett wants us.” Jack said. “I’ll fill you in on the developments at lunch.”

“Lunch?” Sue asked.

“Garrett’s orders.” Jack said smiling.

The two quickly traced the steps to Garrett’s office and were sitting down when Garrett began to speak.

“I assume you two have arranged a date.”

“Christmas Eve.” Sue said with confidence.

“No one’s going out of town?”

“We’ve discretely checked and no one is.” Jack said.

“Good. I’ll take care of getting everyone there. Is there anything else you need?”

“I think we’ve go everything else under control; food, music, and the surprise.” Jack said.

“You two make a good team. Keep me updated.”

“Yes sir.” Sue said.

“I’ve figured out what you’re going to do with this case. I have a few calls to make to finalize things then I’ll announce it.”

“Will do.” Jack said getting up. “Thanks.”

“Just hope this case doesn’t mess up your plans.”

Tuesday December 7, 2004

The next morning the team was gathered in the conference room waiting for Garrett to begin. “As you all know, we have found a link to the allegations. However, at this time we cannot tell who is behind this. So I have come up with the best way to solve this. Since we are convinced someone in the bank is playing with the computers and changing the amounts being deposited, we need someone in there that is able to find out.”

“Undercover, looks like Sue and Jack Hudson are making another appearance!” Bobby said.

“Not quite. Jack and Tara are actually going in on this one.” Garrett said looking around the room. And in spite of himself smiled at his team’s reactions.

“Sir?” Jack asked, slightly confused and disappointed.

“Tara’s computer expertise is needed. And since most of the other tellers are married we thought it should be kept in the same class.”

“But why…” Jack started.

“You because you have had the most experience at undercover.” Garrett said simply. “Right now special operations is making up your identities. You’ll be able to pick them up when you leave today.”

“When do we start?” Tara asked.

“Tomorrow.” Garrett said. “I’ll leave you guys to discuss this. Jack, Tara, I need you in my office at 3:30.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Back in the bullpen the team was busy chatting about the new assignment; all that is except Sue and Jack who were keeping very quiet about it.
“I always knew Sparky and Tara would weather the storm.” Bobby said slapping his friend on the back.
“We’ll see about that, my money is still on Sue.” D said.
“Well ladies and gentleman I guess it’s about time we interview the bride.” Bobby said walking to Tara’s desk. Then he picked up one of her fluffy pens and used it like a microphone. “G’day this is Bobby Manning on location at the FBI with this breaking news for The Romance Network. So, Tara, is it true that you will be the next Mrs. Hudson.”
“Yes, it is.” Tara said.
“And how do you feel about this?”
“Well at first I was a little nervous. I mean who wants to live with Jack for an indefinite amount of time. But I’m determined to just get it over with now.” Tara said seriously.
“I see, well from what I understand you aren’t the first wife. Is that true?”
“I’m afraid I can’t answer that.” Tara said.
“Let me put it this way, I understand that a few months ago you and a woman by the name of Thomas we found fighting over….”
“Ok that’s enough!” Jack said interfering.
“That would be the groom. Sir is it true that you were married before?”
“Don’t you have some work to do?” Jack asked taking the pen from Bobby.
“I like you better when you’re married to Sue.”
“Work now!” Jack demanded.
“I hate to say this Jack, but I have to agree with Bobby.” D said walking back to his desk. As he sat down he pulled a file and began to look through it. But made sure he kept Jack and Sue in his eyesight.
Jack who had enough sat down and began to tie up some lose ends, since he didn’t know when he would be back in.
“So you were kind of quiet today.” Lucy said as she and Sue ate dinner.
“Hmm? I’m sorry Luce what did you say?” Sue said having a hard time concentrating.
“I said you were awfully quiet today. Any reason why?”
“No, I guess I’m just not feeling well.”
“Uh huh…it wouldn’t have to do with Jack’s assignment would it?”
“No, of course not. Why would it? Just because…”
“Yes?”
“Nothing it’s just going to make things a little more difficult.” Sue said getting up to rinse off her plate.
“Ok.”
“I’ll right back. I need to go make a phone call.” Sue said suddenly dropping her dish in the sink. But as she reached the phone it started to ring and she picked it up.
“Hey Sue it’s Jack.” Ran across the screen.
“Hey! What’s up?”
“Not much. I know you’re probably busy, but would you like to come over? We can go over some more plans.”
“Sure.”
“Great I’ll come and pick you up in about 15 minutes?”
“Ok.”
“Bye.”
“Bye.” Sue hung up the phone and went back into the kitchen.
“Who called?” Lucy asked.
“I was coming to help you with these, but I’m going out.” Sue said evading the question.
“When?” Lucy said knowing full well Sue hadn’t answered her original question.
“He’s coming to pick me up in a few minutes.” Sue said.
“He?”
“Yeah so I better get going. If you want I’ll finish these up when I get home, and don’t wait up.” Sue said. Then she slipped on her sneakers and coat, grabbed Levi, and went downstairs to meet Jack.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“I could have came up and got you, you know.” Jack said as Sue got in the car.

“I know. But Levi needed to go out first.” She said smiling.

As they pulled up to Jack’s apartment Levi let out a bark.

“I think Levi knows where we are.” Jack said giving the dog a pat on the head.

“Yeah he associates it with being allowed in a chair.” Sue said.

“I can’t help it if I don’t mind it. He’s welcome to that chair anytime, he should be able to relax after working all day too.” Jack said as he opened the door to his apartment. And after Levi was unclipped from his leash he ran straight to his chair and Sue and Jack took a seat on the couch.

“So what else do we have left?” Jack asked.

“Well I think we’re covered in the music department.” Sue said glancing at the massive amount of cds on Jack’s entertainment system.

“I’m going to take that as a compliment.” Jack said grinning.

“So I guess what we really need to work out is where.” Sue said.

“How about here?” Jack suggested.

“Are you sure? It’s going to be a lot of work and your…”

“I’m what…?” Jack asked.

“Not going to be here.” Sue said softly.

“Ah… I wondered when we would get to that.” Jack said.

“No that’s not the problem…I mean…you just won’t be here to get ready.”

“You really think I would leave this all on you?” Sue shrugged her shoulders. “Nope, sorry you’re stuck with me.” Jack said.

“I…”

“I’ll be here, you can count on me.” Jack said. “So we’ll have it here.”

“Ok, next is the f…”

“Food!” Jack finished. “The most important part.”

“Then you can plan it. You will have plenty of time over the next couple of weeks. You make the list and then we can go shopping a couple of days before hand. But give me the list so I can make revisions.”

“Yes ma’am. Anything else?”

“The surprise.”

“Ah the good details.” Jack said his eye sparkling.

“We’ll have to do that together.”

“We can do it when we get the food.” Jack suggested.

“Too close to Christmas. We need to do it soon.” Sue said. “So I guess I’ll do it myself.”

“We’ll do it together. Don’t worry.” Jack encouraged.

“Ok, what time do you have to report tomorrow?” Sue asked.

“Tara starts work at 7, I however, don’t have to be at the house till 9.” Jack said.

“That’s nice.”

“Yeah, do you want some ice cream?” Jack asked. “Then we can watch a movie or something.”

“It’s 30 degrees out.”

“Yes but that’s outside, we’re inside.”

“Sure.”

“Good you pick a movie and I’ll be back in a minute.” Jack said getting up.

While Sue was picking a movie, Jack was dishing up the ice cream. “Man, for the first time I really don’t want to go undercover.” Jack thought. “And I wish it was her going with me not Tara. I mean Tara’s great but we just don’t hit it off like Sue and I.”

“Need any help?”

Jack turned around startled. “What?”

“I just came to see if you got lost or sucked into the ice cream box.” Sue said smiling.

“Ah…no. I’m fine.”

“Are you sure, you look a little distracted. I can leave if…”

“NO! I mean please stay. I could use the company.” Jack said.

“Ok, well the movie’s ready.”

“And so is the ice cream.” Jack said handing Sue a bowl.

The two sat next to each other on the couch and watched the movie. After the first was over they determined they had enough time to watch another. At some point during this movie Sue started leaning into Jack, and at some point Jack’s arm went around Sue’s shoulders. By the end of the movie both we asleep against each other; dreaming.

Wednesday December 8, 2004

Slowly Jack opened his eyes, he really didn’t want to get up. He couldn’t remember a night he had slept so well. As his will power was about to give up something wet touched his hand and his eyes flew open. There was Levi sitting at his feet looking back and forth between him and Sue. Sue now had her head against Jack’s chest and was still sleeping. Jack smiled at the sleeping figure before him and let out a little sigh of regret. He then glanced at the clock to see what time it was. 8 o’clock! No that had to be wrong!

Not believing they had slept that long he gently shook Sue. Soon her eyes fluttered open, though her thoughts were still in her pleasant dream. As she fully awoke she realized where she was and quickly sat up; regretful to leave the dream. “I’m sorry.” She said rubbing her eyes. “What time is it?”

“Eight.” Jack said calmly.

“Eight! Why are you just sitting there?”

“Calm down. It’s ok. I don’t have to be at the house till nine.”

“But I should be at work by now.” Sue said.

“You don’t have to be in by now.” Jack said.

“We’ll I usually am.”

“Just relax. It won’t hurt to be on time. Anyway the rest of the team will be unpacking the house. There’s nothing to do at the office.”

“Ok.”

“Let me go shower then I’ll take you home.” Jack said starting to get up but froze when he saw the look on Sue’s face. “What’s wrong?”

“Lucy!” Sue said.

“Oh.” Jack understood. “It’s ok. Maybe she doesn’t know you didn’t come home. You are usually up before her.”

“Yeah.” Sue said hopefully.

“Good. I’ll be back.”

“Jack, I had a good time last night.” Sue said.

“Me too.”

While Jack was in the shower, Sue decided to make some breakfast. After finding everything she needed she set to work trying to keep her mind off her most recent dream. A few minutes later Jack was standing in the kitchen doorway watching her. After a deep breath he made his way over to her and gently touched her shoulder.

“Hey, I hope you don’t mind, I thought I’d make some breakfast.” Sue said.

“Not at all. Since you’re doing that, I’ll go take Levi out.” Jack volunteered.

“Thanks.”

At 8:30 Jack and Sue were about to leave when Jack’s phone rang. After telling Sue, Jack answered it. “Hello?”

“Jack, where are you?” Bobby asked.

“My apartment.”

“You have the key to the house and we’re waiting on you.”

“You weren’t supposed to be there till 9. Moving companies are never early.”

“Yeah well we’re FBI. Get over here now, the less time I’m around Myles the better and right now he’s the only other person here.”

“Alright I’ll be right there.” Jack said then hung up the phone.

“What’s the matter?” Sue asked. She only saw Jack’s responses, but she knew it probably wasn’t good.

“Bobby and Myles are already at the house.” Jack said exasperated. “They want me over there now.”

“Ok, I guess you can drop me off later. I can help unpack.” Sue said.

“Um…”

“What?”

“Do you want to borrow some clothes?” Jack asked.

“Uh… a sweatshirt perhaps?” Sue said. “As long as I don’t see Lucy in this I’ll be fine.”

“Let me grab one.” Jack said quickly going to his room.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“About time you got here.” Bobby said as Jack got out of his car.
“Yeah, yeah. Here you go.” Jack said opening the front door.
“Thanks. So what’s Sue doing with you?” Bobby asked.
“Uh…” Jack stuttered.
Sue saw the question and decided she should be the one to answer it. “He was giving me a ride into work.”
“But I called him at his apartment.” Bobby said.
“That’s because I forgot something and I had to go back.” Jack said.
“Uh huh.” Bobby looked at the pair with suspicion, but before he could make a comment one of Jack’s new neighbors walked up.
“Hi, my name is Rachel Bowman I live next door.” She said shaking Jack and Sue’s hand.
“Hi I’m Jack Hudson. It’s nice too meet you.”
“I thought I’d come over and welcome the both of you to the neighborhood. It’s really nice to have a new couple.”
“Ah, actually this is my…sister.” Jack said. “My wife is at work right now.”
“Oh! I’m sorry.”
“It’s ok, I’m Sue Hudson. I just came to help my big brother unpack.”
“Well it is nice to meet you, and I look forward to meeting your wife.” Rachel said then walked away.
As soon as Rachel was out of ear shot Bobby started laughing.
“That was close.” Jack said then added, “Ok Bobby you can cut it out now.”
“Sister huh?” Sue said.
“Yeah…”
“Jack just had to make you a Hudson again.” Bobby said still laughing. “Although I’m sure he’d rather it not be a sister…”
“Don’t you have some work to do?” Jack asked.
“I’m going.” Bobby said shaking his head and walking away.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Donna, I’d like to introduce you to Tara. She is the new teller.”

“Hi.” Donna said smiling.

“Hi.” Tara replied.

“I’ll let Donna introduce you to the others. This is your station; we open in 15 minutes. Welcome to First National Bank.” The manager said then headed back to her office.

“So you new here?” Donna asked after making all the necessary introductions.

“Yeah me and my husband just moved here from New York.” Tara said.

“Really? That’s interesting. What does your husband do?”

“He’s a lawyer.”

“So he got transferred here?”

“No, he decided to open his own office. He’ll be working from home.” Tara said.

“That’s nice. Do you have any children?”

“No, not yet.” Tara said wondering if this was the kind of questioning Jack and Sue went through last time.

Thursday December 9, 2004

“Morning.” Tara said entering the kitchen.

Jack was sitting at the table reading the paper and drinking orange juice. “Morning.” He replied.

“Did you sleep well?”

“Alright.”

“Good, you guys did a good job unpacking yesterday.” Tara said grabbing a glass of her own.

“Sue hoped you’d like it.” Jack said taking another sip.

“Sue? But I thought she wasn’t supposed to come?”

“Yeah well we had a slight mishap and she ended up coming with me. Quite funny actually, our neighbor Rachel decided to make it trying.” Jack said smiling.

“Huh?” Tara asked confused.

“Let me put it this way Sue is now my sister.” Jack said getting up and putting his dishes in the dishwasher.

“Ah. I got it.”

“Did you learn anything yesterday?” Jack asked.

“No, I will get a chance at the computers tonight. So I probably won’t be back as early.”

“That’s fine.”

“Jack, is this how you were with Sue.” Tara asked.

“What?” Jack asked looking up.

“We all know you would rather be stuck here with Sue than me.” Tara said.

“No. This is a job, and Sue is just a coworker. It’s the same.” Jack said.

“Uh huh. Well I’ll see you tonight.”

“Bye.” Jack said going back to his paper, thinking about what Tara had said.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“So far Tara hasn’t found anything suspicious, but she is going to work with the computers tonight.” Jack said.
“Sue and I went to see the Senator again yesterday.” Bobby started. “We showed him the numbers and he agreed that the numbers matched his account records.”
“He also said that he will let us see his pay statements from next week as well.” Sue added.
“Have you found anything on the employees?” Jack asked.
“Well without Tara here we are trying to figure our way around the system a little more, so it’s taking longer than normal. We should have that information tomorrow.” Bobby said.
“Is that all?” D asked.
“I believe so.” Bobby said.
“Good, Jack, Garrett wants to see you and Sue in his office.”
“Great.”
As Jack and Sue left the bullpen Bobby made his way to Lucy’s desk.
“Hey Lucy, I’ve got a question.”
“Ok.”
“The night before last did Sue happen to go out?”
“Yeah. Why?” Lucy asked curious as to where this was going.
“Do you know what time she got home?”
“No, she told me not to wait up.”
“Did she happen to mention where she was going?” Bobby asked.
“Out with a friend. And I assume it’s the same close friend she’s been out with several other nights recently. Why?”
“What time did Sue leave yesterday morning?”
“She was gone before I was up, which isn’t unusual.”
“So you really don’t know if she came home at all?”
“I guess not. Will you please tell me why?” Lucy asked getting slightly perturbed.
“Sue helped unpack Jack’s house yesterday.”
“So?” Lucy said still not understanding.
“She said Jack was taking her to work. By then it was almost nine and we all know that Sue is in here earlier than that, plus she wasn’t dressed in work clothes.”
“What was she wearing?” Lucy asked starting to get Bobby’s point.
“Jean, sneakers, a t-shirt, and Jack’s Redskin’s sweatshirt.” Bobby said watching a smile form on Lucy’s face.
“Jack’s shirt?”
“I bought it for him a couple years ago.” Bobby said.
“So…”
“So it appears that they are hiding something from us.” Bobby concluded.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Well I will see you tomorrow.” Donna said grabbing her coat.

“See you tomorrow.” Tara said.

A few minutes later Debbie the manager came in. “You ready?”

“Yep.” Tara said following her to a computer.

“I’ll be in my office, let me know before you leave.”

“I will. Thanks.”

Tara quickly got to work on the computer’s hard drive. Within minutes she was on to the next computer. After about thirty minutes she decided it to call it quits for the night. After informing Debbie she was leaving she headed home.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“So what time did you get home the other night?” Lucy asked Sue over dinner.
“Late. I’m not really sure what time.” Sue did not like lying but it’s not like she could say yesterday morning.
“Did you not sleep well?”
“No I slept great.” Sue said smiling. “Why?”
“Well you got home late and were up early so…”
“No I slept fine.”
“Ok Sue, give it up.” Lucy said.
“What?!”
“I know where you were…”
“You do?”
“Why didn’t you tell me you and Jack were dating?” Lucy exclaimed.
“We aren’t.” Sue said.
“But…”
“I was at his house, but we were working on an assignment from Garrett. And with Jack undercover we had to finalize a couple last details.”
“Oh, I’m sorry.”
“It’s ok. Look I can’t tell you what we were working on but you should find out in a couple weeks ok?”
“Ok.”
Friday December 10, 2004
“So what did you guys get?”
“All of the employees look clean.” Bobby said.
“We are, however, starting to look into their families.” Myles said.
“And the all seem to be financially stable.” D added. “What about you? Did Tara get anything off the computers?”
“Not yet. She’s going to try again tonight.” Jack said.
“Good, let us know if she gets something.” D said.
“Will do. Is there anything else?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“I’m home.” Tara called as she took off her coat.

Jack walked into the foyer, “Hey did you get anything?”

“Yes and no. I found the problem but I need more time to work on it. The person who did this put a good security block on his work.”

“Well like you said, nobody’s created something you can’t get past.”

“True. I should be able to track it tomorrow.” Tara said then added, “Something smells good.”

“I thought I’d cook tonight. Since you worked so hard today.”

In response Jack got a swat on the arm with a glove. “Thanks.”

“No problem.”

“But are you sure you can cook, because I really can’t afford to miss work for food poisoning.”

“Sue seemed fine when she ate it…I mean…”

“You cook for Sue?”

“Well…. I…”

“Ok I’m just going to come out and ask, was it Sue that you had to set a date with.”

“Huh?”

“Remember, Garrett…”

“Oh, yeah it was. Sue guessed you would figure it out.”

“So does that mean you’re dating…” Tara asked hopefully. Then thought that she had to quit hanging around Lucy so much.

“No, we just have…a special project in the works. Come on dinner’s getting cold.”

Saturday December 11, 2004

Since things at the office were going pretty slow the team was given Saturday morning off. Lucy decided to get a start on her Christmas shopping. Sue, on the other hand, didn’t feel like going out.

About an hour or so after Lucy left there was a knock on the door. Levi bounded into the living room to notify Sue, who was curled up on the couch watching a movie. As she opened the door she was surprised at who was on the other side.

“Jack?!”

“I hope you don’t mind, but I needed my sister’s advice.” Jack said grinning sheepishly.

“No, come in.” As he stepped inside she shut the door then asked, “What’s up?”

“I can’t come up with a list of food.”

“Ah…come on. Lucy’s out doing some shopping so she shouldn’t be home for hours.”

“Yeah, Tara’s at work.”

“How is that going…the case I mean?”

“Good.”

“So the list.”

“Right the list.” Jack said taking a piece of paper from his pocket.

“Well it’s good so far, but how about we add some vegetables and dip.” Sue said glancing over the mostly junk food list.

“That’s what I forgot.” Jack said slapping his forehead.

“Uh huh.”

“What about your ice cream dessert. I know me and Levi would really enjoy that.” Jack said giving his best puppy dog look.

“Alright we’ll add that, but your helping cook all this.” She said. “Since you revealed that you do know your way around a kitchen.”

“Of course.” Jack said feigning shock. “I wouldn’t dream of letting you do it all by yourself.”

“Good.”

For the next couple of hours the two sat laughing making plans and gently, unintentionally flirting.

“Well I better get going.” Jack said getting up.

“Yeah.” Sue said as they walked toward the door.

“Thanks. There’s no way I could have done that by myself.”

“No problem, we are in this…”

Jack cut her off by pressing his lips to hers. When he started to pull back Sue pulled him closer. The world around them disappeared; neither was processing time until Jack heard a small knock on the door. Slowly Jack pulled back, not really wanting to but he knew they needed to.

Sue looked curiously at Jack, wondering why he pulled back. And as if reading her mind he spoke. “Someone’s at the door.”

She nodded then called, “Coming.”

“We’ll talk later.” Jack said to Sue, whose eyes were sparkling close to the same wattage as his own. He gave her one more kiss then allowed her to lead him to the door.

“Hey Lucy.” Sue said helping her with the bags.

“Hey you guys. What’s up?”

“Not much, I was just leaving. Please tell the team I’ll call them with that information.” Jack said.

“I will. Bye.”

“Bye.” Jack said then walked out to his car.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jack was in a daze his whole drive back. He couldn’t believe he had done that. As he walked into the house he failed to notice the other car in the driveway, in fact he wasn’t really sure how he made it back safely. He would have to file that away; not to drive after kissing Sue.
Taking off his coat he sat down on the couch with a sigh. It would be days before he would be able to see Sue again. She seemed ok with it when he left, but what if she changed her mind.
“Jack!” Jack was startled from his thoughts by Tara walking into the room. “Jack!”
“What?” Jack asked trying to come down from the cloud he was floating on.
“Where were you?”
“Out.”
“We’re having dinner with Donna and her family tonight.” Tara said confused at Jack’s behavior.
“When?”
“In an hour.”
“Ok. I’ll be back down in a minute.” Jack said going upstairs to get ready.
Tara just stood there watching. She had never seen him like this before and she had known him for several years now. “Oh well,” She thought, shrugging it off. “Sue’s the one who’s going to have to put up with it the most.”
Sunday December 12, 2004
“Sorry to call everyone in here today, but Tara got some information off the computers yesterday.” D said as the team met in the bullpen. “Tara.”
“Right. Well first off whoever is doing this definitely know his way around a computer. He put a very sophisticated cloaking device on his work, almost undetectable. But I did manage to get the log on number he was using.”
“So we know who did it?” Myles asked.
“Not quite. I checked with the manager and she said it was a retired number that still worked because it hadn’t been taken off the system.”
“What idiot left it on?” Bobby asked.
“Well they usually do delete it, but she said this one must have been overlooked. Now the employee who had this number moved out of state. I checked and it’s true she is now enjoying beautiful Florida.”
“So she gave it to someone else?” Myles suggested.
“We don’t think so.” Jack said.
“Someone must have stolen it.” Tara said. “Unfortunately before I could do more investigating the security guards made their rounds and I had to leave.”
“So if we have the number can we trace when it was used?” Sue asked.
“Yes but that’s when I was interrupted by security. I’m going to try and get it tomorrow.”
“Anything else?”
“Nope.” Jack said.
“All right let’s break for today.” D said grabbing his coat.
“Jack, I’m going to be a few minutes. I need to get some stuff from my computer.” Tara said.
“Ok. I’ll be back in a minute.” Jack said. “Hey Sue can I see you for a minute?”
“Sure.” Sue said following Jack to an empty conference room.
After closing the door Jack began, “I figured we needed to…” Jack stopped when Sue’s hand went over his mouth.
“Listen, I’m fine with it.” Jack’s eyebrows shot up. “What? That is what you wanted isn’t it?” Jack nodded since his mouth was still covered.
“Good.” She said replacing her hands with her lips. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” She said then walked out the door.
Monday December 13, 2004
Tara was sitting at a computer after the bank had closed trying to find information when once again the security guard made his rounds inside the bank.
“Can I help you Miss?”
“Ahh…no I was just finishing up some balance sheets for the manager.” Tara said quickly shutting down the program. “I was just leaving.”
“Ok. Have a good evening.” The security guard said moving on.
“Hmm…” Tara thought, “I think we have a winner.”
She quickly ran and told Debbie she was leaving and then rushed back to the house. Startling Jack when she burst through the door.
“Jack!”
“What’s wrong?” Jack asked coming into the foyer.
“I’ve got it. I think I know who’s doing this.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Within an hour the team was gathered at the bullpen waiting for Tara to explain the urgent meeting.

“I’m sorry I called you here so late, but we think we know who’s doing it. I will be at work early tomorrow and confirm it.”

“Who?”

“The security guard. He’s the only person with access when no one else is around. He interrupted me again today before I got a chance to look at the time codes.” Tara explained.

“So we need to come up with a plan to get him on Wednesday.” D said.

“Why Wednesday?” Bobby asked.

“Come on Crash, you should know what Wednesday is.” Jack teased.

After a moment of thought Bobby answered. “Pay day.”

“Right.”

Tuesday December 14, 2004

“Sorry to do this to you guys but you’ve got a new case.” Garrett said walking into the bullpen.

“What?” Bobby said. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”

“I’m afraid not. There is a college professor that’s missing.”

“Why aren’t missing persons handling it?” D asked.

“Because they aren’t. Myles familiarize yourself with the details then fill everyone in.” Garrett said handing a file to Myles. “Thomas, my office please.”

As Sue took a seat across from Garrett he began to speak.

“Now I realize with this new case you will be even more pressed for time. Especially since you have something on the side. So once again I’m going to ask if there’s anything I can do to help.”

“Well as long as we wrap up the bank case tomorrow, I think we’ve got everything under control. We decided to have it at Jack’s place, and we’ve covered food and music.”

“What about decorations?”

“This weekend I think. I still have to confirm it with Jack.”

“And the surprise?”

“Soon hopefully.” Sue said with slightly less confidence than her other statements.

“Well that, I insist on helping with.” He said handing her an envelope. “Don’t open it here and open it with Jack.”

“Yes sir.” Sue said confused at his instructions.

“Good. Let me know how the arrest goes tomorrow.”

“Yes sir.” Sue said taking her leave.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Ok our missing person is 40 year-old Francis Taylor.” Myles said pointing to a picture on a board. “He is a professor of chemistry at George Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.”
“If he lives in St. Louis, why are we involved?” Bobby asked.
“Because he disappeared here. He was a speaker for a conference and when he didn’t show for his speech, but had been seen earlier that day the bigwigs got worried.” Myles said.
“I see so our Mr. Taylor was a prominent figure in the scientific community?” Bobby asked.
“Yes, apparently he was working on something that would revolutionize the modern world.”
“So I guess we get to head out to the conference.” Bobby said reaching for his coat. “Sue you want to come with?”
“Sure.”
Wednesday December 15, 2004
“So have we got word on what this guys was working on yet?” D asked Myles.
“No. Apparently only he knew.”
“Somebody else always knows.”
“Well if you can tell me who that would be great.” Myles said perturbed.
“Myles, here’s those reports you wanted.” Bobby said handing Myles a file.
“Ah, the guest lists.”
“Guest lists?” D asked.
“For the conference, we don’t want to miss somebody.”
“Did you two get anything else from the guests?” Myles asked.
“Not really.” Bobby said.
“Few of them had actually met Mr. Taylor.” Sue said.
“He wasn’t socially inclined. Most of his work was done in private.”
“He has had no partners?” Myles asked.
“One.” Bobby said. “A Mr. James Sulkner. He was the victim’s best friend through college and afterwards they both worked for the same company; Funke Electronics.”
“Ok, try to get a hold of this James character. I want to know if something was up with Taylor.” Myles instructed. “And keep in mind, we’re waiting for Tara’s call this afternoon to nab our bank guy.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Hi, Ms. Johnston?” Bobby asked.

“Please call me Annika.” The lady said sitting down at her desk.

“Annika. I’m Bobby Manning with the FBI in Washington; we are investigating the disappearance of Francis Taylor. I understand he worked here at one point.”

“Yes I remember him. That had to have been over ten years ago though.”

“What do you remember about him?” Bobby asked.

“He was a loner; he and his buddy James. But they were very nice to me; they always let me watch them when they worked. That’s how I knew I wanted to take over the business.” Annika said.

“I see. Did anything strike you as odd or out of place with him.”

“Not really, but he wasn’t one to talk about his personal life. In fact I’m not sure he even had one.”

“What do you mean?”

“He was always here. I’m not sure that I had ever known him to take off, except a few years before he left, he did leave once when his mother died. But that’s the only time I remember him not being here. My father would probably be able to tell you more, I just took over about six years ago and he had left by then.”

“Thanks, I’ll have to do that. Can I get his address?”

“You won’t need it, he’s here. Just let me page him.” Annika said picking up the phone.

After a few minutes a tall man with grey hair entered the room. “Hey dad!” Annika said giving him a hug. “This is Bobby Manning with the FBI he has some questions about Franc Taylor.”

“Hi, I’m Henry Funke.” Mr. Funke said shaking Bobby’s hand. He then took a seat in the chair next to Bobby’s.

“Hello.”

“So you need to know about old Franc huh?”

“Yes sir, anything you can tell me could be useful.”

“Well….”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Hey Myles, Bobby called and said he would be on the next flight back out of St. Louis.” Lucy called out.
“Good….” Myles was interrupted by his telephone ringing. “Agent Myles Leland.” He said answering it. “Ok, we’ll be right there.”
“That Jack?” D asked as Myles put the phone back on the receiver.
“Yep, he says it’s time to get down there.”
Within a minute the bullpen was deserted except for Lucy who was trying to dig up more information on the missing guy and was also fielding tips sent over from the hotline.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“It’s about time you got here.” Jack said as Myles and Sue entered the van.”

“Traffic.” Sue said, receiving a wink from Jack.

“Sue, you’ll be in here with me.” Jack said. “Myles, you might want to join Tara. She is briefing SWAT and the others on the layout and route of the bank.”

“I see.” Myles said looking at Jack and then to Sue. “Please don’t become too distracted in here.” Myles left before another word could be said. And Jack decided that it was probably in the best interest for his safety.

Silently Jack and Sue sat there, waiting for the next move. Overly trying to keep a good distance between them, making the situation slightly uncomfortable. Thankfully after a few minutes Tara started in over Jack’s earpiece.

“Jack, how are things looking in there?”

“Good, so far he’s not come in.”

“Well the bank’s only been closed for an hour. Usually there are still people in there.” Tara said. “Let me know when something’s happening.”

After making sure he had Sue’s attention Jack began to sign to her. Before long they were carrying on a pleasant conversation and all awkwardness seemed to have left. After an hour of this Jack noticed movement on the screen in front of him.

“Tara he’s in the room.” Jack said over the headset.

“Has he logged on?” Tara asked.

“Hold on…Yes he has. I repeat subject has logged on.”

“Alright; it’s our turn now.” Tara said signaling the teams.

As the teams neared the bank Tara asked for an update.

“He’s still on the computer, his back is toward the main door and his hands are on the keyboard.” Jack said.

“Ok, all teams are in position. On your count Jack.”

“Three, two, one, execute.” Jack said watching the screen.

Tara led her team through the main doors. As they neared the room where the man was at she yelled. “FBI put you hands in the air.”

Startled man started to reach for his gun, but before he made it two agents had him on the floor. Tara bent over and collected his gun from where it had fallen. “We’re clear.” She said over the mic.

Back in the trailer Jack gave Sue a thumbs up with a smile.

Thursday December 16, 2004

“One more bad guy down.” Jack said sitting in his chair.

“And now a missing one to find.” Myles said. “Is Bobby back yet?”

“He’s hopefully on the plane now.” Lucy said.

“Why is he just now on a plane?” Myles asked.

“They had a snow storm over St. Louis.” Lucy said. “Flights are just now getting out again.”

“Did he happen to say whether he found anything out or not?”

“He said he emailed you the info.”

“Thanks.”

“I knew it was awfully quiet in here.” Jack said.

“Speaking of that…” D said.

“Speaking of what?”

“Who do you like better?”

“What?”

“Sue or Tara. Who did you like living with better?”

At this point both Sue and Tara were waiting for Jack’s response.

“I think I’ll plead the fifth on that one…. And hey look it’s time for lunch!” Jack said standing to grab his coat.

“Jack, do you mind if I join you?” Sue asked.

“Of course not. We do need to fine-tune our surprise.”

“Good.” Sue said standing to get her coat. After letting Jack help her put it on she took his arm and they left the bullpen behind.

Everyone who happened to be in the bullpen at that moment stood in shock for a good full minute before a excited buzz filled the room.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“What I would have given to see their faces!” Jack said over lunch.
“They’ll be so disappointed when we tell them it was all an act.” Sue said.
“What?”
“I said we’d tell them it was an act.” Sue said catching Jack’s eye.
“Yes, they shall be quite saddened at it.” Jack agreed.
“Oh I forgot, Garrett gave this to me the other day. He said I was to open it with you not at the office.”
“Well then I say we open it now.” Jack said taking the envelope from her and gently ripping it open. He pulled out two slips of paper; the first was long and upon reading it Jack’s eyes grew rather large.
“What is it?” Sue asked.
Jack handed her the first piece of paper and continued to read the second. He laughed slightly at the directions but quickly followed them. He picked up the envelope and carefully broke open the sides.
“Jack?!” Sue asked.
“It’s for the surprise.” Jack said referring to the paper in her hands. “This is a list of suggested things to get with it.” Jack said handing her the other piece of paper.
After reading it Sue asked. “So, you going to tell me what is written in the envelope?”
“No. Garrett said not to. You will find out soon though.” Jack said
“Please!”
“Sorry but I’m following my bosses orders on this one.” Jack said pocketing the envelope.
“Fine. We’d better get going anyway.” Sue said.
“Yeah, lot’s of work to do.”
“So you want to go shopping Saturday?” Sue asked.
“Works for me.”
“Bobby! Glad you finally made it back.” Jack said.
“Divorced already Sparky?” Bobby said tossing a bag on Jack’s desk. “I’m disappointed I was really hoping to win the bet.”
Jack took the bag and peeked inside. “Very funny Bobby, very funny?”
“What is it?” Sue asked.
“Yeah come on let us see.” Tara begged.
“Uh oh Sparky cornered by the two women in your life. You might want to give in.” Bobby teased.
“No one will be seeing what’s in the bag.” Jack said placing it in a drawer.
“Can we please get back to the case?” Myles asked. “After all we do have a missing person.”
“Which is beginning to look more and more suspicious.” Bobby said taking his seat.
“Right. Now Bobby was able to talk with Taylor’s old buddy James.”
“Unfortunately James had no clue what Taylor was up to…but he did know of a group that wasn’t exactly found of him, but were crazy enough to want him.” Bobby said.
“Which brings us to…The American Education Theorists.”
“The what?” Lucy asked.
“The…”
“I heard what you said, who are they?”
“They are a group of people focused on education in the U.S.”
“So what do they want with our professor?” Jack asked
“Well our professor’s ideals didn’t exactly match theirs.” Myles started.
“In fact he flunked the whole lot of them.” Bobby said with a smile.
“They kidnapped him because they failed his class?” Jack asked in disbelief.
“Pretty much.”
“So we know the students are in the DC area?” Sue asked.
“I’m checking right now.” Tara said.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Ok here’s what I’ve found.” Tara said later that afternoon. “Two of them recently made a trip out here. And as far as I can tell are still here. They’re credit card statements show that they are staying at the Country Inn just outside of town.”

“So time to attack?” Jack asked.

“Yes and no.”

“But the guy’s missing…”

“Yes and we are going to take the two here. However, more members of the group are on their way out here.”

“So hopefully they’ll take us to the victim.” Myles concluded. “Jack, you and Bobby go pick up our two goons at the hotel.”

“Maybe they’ll tell.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Listen we know you took him.” Bobby said.
“I want a lawyer.” The young man said.
“Fine, but you better hope he’s alive when we find him.” Bobby said disgusted and walked out.
“He lawyered up awful fast.” D said to Bobby in the hall.
“He’s a rich kid with dad’s money. No doubt pops taught him to do that.” Bobby said. “How’s Jack doing?”
“Nothing, though he hasn’t asked for a lawyer yet.”
“He will soon. Once he realizes how serious this is.”
“Hopefully our other guys will lead us to him.” D said.
“If they know where he is.”
“ERT is searching the hotel room for clues.”
“Everyone say a prayer.”
“SOG is following the guys from the airport.” Tara said.
“How sure are we that these two know where he is?” Jack asked.
“Well the one is the leader, so were hoping he’s the control freak type that knows everything.” Myles said.
“So we wait.”
“Yep.”
After about two hours the team was getting restless and very bored. They had no other work to do and it was the week before Christmas. Finally Garrett came in and broke the silence.
“What a cheery looking group.” Garrett said as Levi got Sue’s attention.
“I’m sorry did I miss something?” Sue asked.
“No, I was just starting. SOG called they are bringing in the two airport suspects.”
“They called you?”
“Yes. Now I need you to interview them and then you can leave, there isn’t much else you can do without the forensics report…and even then…”
“Yes sir.” Myles said. “When will they be here?”
“They should be arriving about now.” Garrett said checking his watch.
“So divide and concur and enjoy your afternoon.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“So what do you think?” Sue asked holding up a tie.

“Perfect.” Jack said putting it in the cart.

As it turned out the suspects knew nothing of the victim’s whereabouts, and with the report not in yet Jack and Sue took off to finish some shopping.

“What’s next?” Sue asked.

“Pens.”

“I know exactly where to look.” Sue said walking ahead. “Here. Which ones?”

“One of those and one of those.” Jack said pointing to his favorites.

“Ok, so all that leaves is the tickets.” Sue said looking at the list in her hands.

“It was nice of Garrett to help, it would have taken us hours to form a list.” Jack said.

“Yeah it was.”

“So where to now?” Jack asked.

“I don’t know I suppose we need to wrap all this stuff up after we pick up the tickets.” Sue suggested.

“And what a coincidence I happen to have that kind of stuff at my place.”

“Hmm… who would have guessed? After finding out you can cook nothing surprises me.”

“Well, looks like I need to come up with a few new surprises.” Jack said mischievously, even though he knew this next one would top her list.

Sunday December 19, 2004

“So, I have to ask.” Lucy said. “Did you have a good time with Jack yesterday?”

“Yes I did.” Sue said placing dinner in the oven.

“Aren’t you going to tell me more?”

“No. There’s nothing else to tell.”

“What did you do?”

“We worked on Garrett’s assignment.” Sue said.

“But it was fun…?”

“Yes, and you’ll find out soon enough what it is.” Sue said exasperated.

“But…hold on the phone’s ringing.” Lucy said leaving.

As Lucy left a smiled formed on Sue’s face. They did have a good time yesterday. But as her thoughts wandered to the dream she had been having recently she shook her head. She really didn’t want to get ahead of herself. And she was really trying not to think of the dream while she was awake. It was bad enough, she thought, that she dreamed the same dream every night recently. So she didn’t want it totally enwrap her thoughts.

“That was Jack… Sue…Levi get Sue.” Lucy commanded.

As Levi nudged Sue a light shade of pink tinted her cheeks. “I’m sorry Luce.”

“It’s fine, it looks like you were deep in thought…anyway, that was Jack.” At the mention of his name her cheeks turned a little pinker. “They found Taylor. He wants you to come in.”

“Ok, um…”

“I’ll take care of dinner and I’ll put some aside for you.” Lucy said. “In fact I’m sure Jack hasn’t eaten you can invite him for some afterwards as well.” Lucy smiled; she had noticed Sue’s change in color earlier.

“Thanks, I’d better go. Come on Levi.”

Monday December 20, 2004

It was after midnight before the team was actually able to talk with Mr. Taylor. First he had been taken to the hospital; after being cleared he was taken back to the Hoover building.

“Mr. Taylor, can you tell us who did this to you?” Myles asked.

“Yes. It was two boys I had in a class about a year ago. Robert Grenviel and Sam Yolk.”

“Ok, do you know why they took you?”

“Something about failing them I believe. They wanted me to see the future of education.” Taylor said.

“What did he mean by that?” Bobby asked.

“They are going to blow up the University.”

The team stood in silence. “In St. Louis?” Jack asked finally.

“Yes, I figured you’d already know about it.”

“When?”

“Monday.”

“Today…Tara…”

“I’m already on it.” Tara said going to her phone.

“Do you know where exactly?”

“I’m not sure maybe the science building…”

“Do you know how?”

“No, they didn’t tell me anything else.”

“Ok, you’ve been a big help.” Myles said, leading the team back to the bullpen.

“Myles I alerted St. Louis, it’s up to them now.”

“I bet they enjoyed that call.” Jack said glancing at his watch.

“Tara, where are the boys?”

“Already out at lock-up.” Tara said.

“Bobby, feel up to a lively interrogation?” Myles asked.

“Sure.” Bobby said grabbing his coat.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Jack, line 2.” Tara called out at about ten o’clock.
“Agent Hudson?” Jack answered. “Yes, thank you. Ok, Merry Christmas.” Jack said then hung up the phone.
“So?”
“The got it, along with the boys who were going to set it off.” Jack said letting out a sigh.
“I’ll call Myles.” Tara volunteered.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Tuesday December 21, 2004

“Congratulations.” Garrett said walking into the bullpen. “Now I expect that all paperwork will be done by the end of today. And since I know it will be, you will not have to come back till after Christmas.” Garrett paused to let the team cheer. “However, there is one matter that will have to be taken care of.” Garrett nodded to Jack who took out a stack of envelopes.

“These are for you.” Jack said passing them out even giving one to Sue.

“You cannot open them till you get home. But I expect you to follow the instructions and if you don’t everyone else will know about it. And, no talking about it with each other.” Garrett said leaving the office. “Happy Holidays.”

Curious the team sat down to work on the paperwork involving their most recent cases. But the day quickly passed and soon everyone was getting ready to leave.

“Happy Holidays everyone.” Myles said.

“Bye.” Tara said getting her coat on. “I gotta get home to see what this is.”

Soon the only people left were Sue, Lucy and Jack.

“Hey Sue,” Jack said walking over to her desk.

“Yes?”

“I’ll pick you up at ten tomorrow.”

“Ok.” Sue said smiling.

“And make sure you read your card. It’s slightly different from the rest.” Jack said. “Merry Christmas.”

“Merry Christmas.” Sue said as Jack walked away. “You ready Lucy?”

“Yep.”

Later that night as Sue sat on the couch she pulled out her envelope and opened it. It was the same as the others she had helped address just days before. But as she opened it and began to read what it said a tear came to her eye. She quietly got up and went to her bedroom, where she quickly fell asleep.

December 22, 2005

“Honey, it’s time to wake up.” He said gently shaking her shoulder.

After a moment her eyes fluttered open and made their way to the man lying next to her.

“Good morning.”

“Morning.” She responded glancing at the sleeping figure in his arms. “How long?”

“A couple of hours ago.” He responded.

“You could have woken me.” She said smiling.

“Well I figured it was my turn. Plus you need sleep every once and a while too.”

“True. What time do you have to be at work?” She asked.

“Ten. And assuming everything gets wrapped up today. I should have the next couple days off.” He said handing his little girl over to his wife. “After all, I couldn’t miss her first Christmas.”

“Good, and tomorrow you can help me shop for the Christmas party.” She said.

“Of course, it’s tradition.” He said giving her a kiss. “The gang should be here at six on Christmas Eve.”

“It will be nice to see them.”

“And they are all looking forward to seeing Kaitlynne.” He said kissing his daughter’s head.

“There.” Sue said making a final adjustment to the tree.

“It looks great.” Jack agreed.

“It’s not decorated.” Sue pointed out.

“So. It still looks great.”

“Come on, it won’t take that long.” Sue said.

“That’s right, because the bottom can’t have ornaments on it.” Jack said looking at Levi, who whined from his comfy chair.

“Here,” Sue said handing him a string of lights, then taking a seat.

“Aren’t you going to help?”

“I was but I decided it would be best if I sat and watched. Maybe took a few pictures…”

“I don’t think so. You’re going to help or you won’t get your present.” Jack baited.

“Present? Hmm…what do you think Levi, should I help?” Levi whined again.

“See even Levi says you should. Plus he wants you to have your present, he’s already seen it and he’s not sure how much longer he can keep it a secret.” Jack said.

“Really, so what is it?” Sue asked.

“You’ll have to wait till after we get the tree decorated.”

“Fine.” Sue said getting up to help.

“Thanks.” Jack said handing her an end of the lights.

Within a couple hours they had Jack’s entire apartment decorated and looking very festive. As they were sitting drinking hot cocoa Sue asked about her present.

“So do I get it today, or do I have to wait for Christmas?” She asked.

“Today,” he said getting up to get it. A minute later he returned with a four by four package clumsily wrapped.

“Well I know you wrapped it.” Sue teased taking it. On the top was a nametag with her name on it. Slowly she unwrapped it to find another layer of wrapping paper and another nametag, this time with a different word. As she reached the fifth layer her hands were shaking and there were tears in her eyes. Gently, Jack took the box from her hand and opened it.

Thursday December 23, 2004

“So do you want to grab some lunch today?” Lucy asked over breakfast.

“Ah…actually I already have plans, and it’ll probably take all day.” Sue said.

“That’s fine, what about tomorrow.”

“I’m busy all day tomorrow as well.”

“You’re not going?” Lucy asked.

“Going where?”

“To Jack’s…I mean, you know the invitation.”

“Oh right, no of course I’m going.” Sue said. “I wouldn’t want Garrett to find out I didn’t.”

“How would he know anyway?”

“You’d be surprised… I mean…”

“He’s going isn’t he?” Lucy asked.

“Yeah…”

“Is this what you and Jack have been working on?”

“Maybe, you’ll find out tomorrow.”

“Fine, so what time did you get home last night?”

“Pretty late.” Sue said nonchalantly thinking about the previous night’s events.

“Ok, well I’m off to Gram’s.” Lucy said putting her plate in the sink.

“Bye.”

Lucy grabbed her coat and opened the door. On the other side was Jack, hand poised in the air about to knock.

“Hey Lucy.” Jack said grinning.

“Hey, Sue’s in the kitchen.” Lucy said walking out the door.

“Levi, get Sue.” Jack instructed.

Levi wagged his tail and obeyed. He pranced over to Sue and licked her hand then looked up towards Jack.

“Oh, hey Jack. How’d you get in?” Sue asked while putting her plate in the sink.

Jack walked over to her and turned her around. “Lucy let me in.” He said closing the gap between their mouths and didn’t pull back until the need for air forced him to.

“I hope she’s gone because it definitely wouldn’t be a surprise if she saw that.” Sue said teasing him.

“She’s gone.” Jack assured before giving her quick kiss. “So where are we off to today?”

“The grocery store, and if you don’t know what that is, it’s a place where you buy food that isn’t prepared.” Sue said.

“Well I’m always up for new adventures, shall we go then?”

“Jack I’m kind of not dressed to go out at the moment.” Sue said.

Jack glanced at her clothes, flannel pants and t-shirt. “You look fine to me.”

“For that you can brave the cold and take Levi out while I get dressed.” She said. She then walked over to a drawer and rummaged through it till she pulled out what she was looking for. “Please lock the door on your way out.” She said handing him a key. “And remember if you lose it, I won’t hear you knocking on the door.”

Jack laughed and watched her walk out of the room then looked down at Levi. “We’d better get going, huh boy.” After attaching the key to his key ring he grabbed Levi’s leash and headed out.

Twenty minutes later Sue came out of her room ready to go. She decided to purposely take long just in case he did lose the key. But he didn’t. As she walked into the living room she paused a moment to take in the scene. Jack was on the floor playing tug-of-war with Levi’s bunny. And for a split second her mind flashed back to her dream.

December 23, 2009

“Daddy, daddy. Please come play with me.”

“I’m coming.” He said going over to his daughter who was playing with her dolls.

“You play with him.” She said handing him a doll.

Sue stood in the doorway holding their two-month-old son Dylan. She never thought she would see the day when this tough FBI agent would play with dolls. She quickly grabbed the camera off the table and snapped a picture.

“I want all copies of that.” He said turning to his wife.

“Of course dear.” She said. “After the team gets theirs.”

Jack looked up and noticed the dazed look on Sue’s face. He went over and gently took her hand. When she was looking at him he asked, “Anything I should know about?”

“One day.” She said then added. “You do want kids right?”

“Of course dear.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Are we done yet?” Jack asked as they made it through only aisle at the store they hadn’t gone down.
“Yes. That’s it.”
“Good because I’m not sure I could stand any more.”
“Why?”
“Because this is the longest time I have spent in a store in the past fifteen years.” Jack said as they got in a line.
“Well get used to it.” She said.
“I will, I just think this is overkill for a first-timer.” He said taking her hand. “Where…?”
“Here,” she said. “Lucy…”
“Say no more, I understand. Tomorrow, however…”
“It stays…”
Friday December 24, 2004
“Ok. So what first?” Jack asked as he and Sue stood in his kitchen.
“Well what do you think?” Sue countered.
“The pies?” Jack guessed.
“Ok.”
“Ok?”
“Yeah, we’ll start with those.” Sue said. “I’ll roll the dough and you open the fillings.”
“Yes ma’am.”
After hours of cooking the pair took a seat on the couch. They had a good time and got away with next to no mess, minus the flour that ended up all over the floor.
“You know Thomas, you have pretty good aim.” Jack complemented looking at the flour on his shirt.
“Well you’re an easy target. Especially when you don’t think I would do it.” Sue said brushing some of the flour out of his hair. “You know you don’t look half bad with gray hair.” She teased.
“I’m glad, I now feel secure that you won’t leave me when I start getting gray hairs.” Jack said.
“It’s a little to late for that.” She said pulling out a hair.
“Ouch!”
“Sorry I thought it was a gray hair, but it was only flour.” Sue said getting up quickly, trying to outrun Jack.
Jack, however, anticipated it and went around the other end of the couch. He soon caught her in his arms and held her there. He turned her around so she could see what he was saying. “Hold still.” His arms moved from her waist up to her neck where he undid her necklace. “This belongs somewhere else.” After replacing the necklace he caught her lips with his.
After pulling apart she said, “I’d better go get changed, the others will be here soon.”
“Yeah, you can change in my room if you’d like.” Jack said.
“Thanks, and could you please take the food out of the oven?”
“Sure.” Jack said going into the kitchen. A few minutes later the doorbell rang. Jack noticed it was still an hour or so before anyone was supposed to be here. As he opened the door he was surprised to see Garrett on the other side.
“Hi Jack. I hope you don’t mind but I thought I’d stop by early and see if you need help with anything.” Garrett said looking at Jack’s floury appearance.
“No, it’s fine. Come on in.” Jack said opening the door wider, allowing Garrett to step in.
“Jack did you get the…Hi.” Sue said walking out of Jack’s bedroom.
“Hello. Jack, I see you followed my instructions.” Garrett said approvingly.
“Ah, yes sir. I was going to anyway, I had already bought…”
“Does this have something to do with the envelope?” Sue asked.
“Yes.” Jack said pulling the envelope out of a drawer and handing it to her.
“And here I was worried about telling you.” Sue said to Garrett after reading the note.
“That’s why I did it. I didn’t know Jack had already bought it but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to push him in the right direction.” Ted said smiling.
“Thank you sir.” Sue said taking Jack’s hand.
“Tonight I’m Ted. Is there anything I can do to help?” Ted asked.
“You can pick out some music.” Jack suggested. “The food’s just about ready. We just have to do some cleaning up.”
“I can see that.” Ted said turning to pick out some music.
“I’m going to go change.” Jack told Sue.
About 45 minutes later Bobby showed up with Darcy, shortly followed by Tara and Stanley.
“Is this what you’ve been planning?” Tara asked.
“Yep.”
“Wow, you guys did a great job!”
“Thanks!” Sue said tucking a piece of hair behind her ear just as Bobby walked over.
“Hey Sparky, nice job, and congrats.”
“How did you…?”
“I saw something hit the light, and I took a guess that you finally came to your senses.”
“Yeah well it looks like that bag will be useful after all.” Jack said. “But don’t say anything yet, we’re waiting till later to announce it. That is if none of the girls catch it.”
Within the next ten minutes everyone else had arrived; D with his family, Myles, and Lucy. Soon everyone was snacking and enjoying him or herself.
“If we could have everyone’s attention.” Jack called out over the noise. “We have a few things to sort out.”
Sue and Jack made their way over to the Christmas tree and everyone gathered around them. “Now this being the season of giving we have found a few gifts for our team members, to say thanks for being there for us.” Sue said as Jack passed out the presents.
Starting with Bobby each opened their gift. Bobby got a tie-dye tie, Lucy got a necklace, Tara got a few pens with a computer program, Myles got tickets to the opera, and D got two tickets to a play with a promise for free babysitting by either Jack or Sue.
“Thanks you guys! Tara said.
“We appreciate it.” D said holding Donna’s hand.
“Well we’re not done yet.” Sue said.
“Ted this is for you.” Jack said handing their boss a gift.
“You didn’t have…” Ted started.
“Yes we did.” Sue said taking Jack’s hand in hers.
Everyone watched as Ted opened his gift certificate for Outback Steakhouse. “Thanks you two.”
“What about you two?” Tara asked. “You didn’t get anything.”
“Well actually Sue got her gift a couple of days ago. I however am still waiting for mine.”
“Very funny. And it’s true I already have mine, Jack will get his tomorrow.” Sue said. “So you’ll have to wait to find out what his is.”
“Well are you going to tell us what yours was?” Lucy asked.
“That was actually next on our list of surprises.” Jack said. “Sue and I are getting married.”
Everyone sat there in shock. Everyone, that is, except Bobby who after a minute started laughing at everyone else’s response.
“Congrats!” He said through his laughing.
“What did he say?” Sue asked.
“Congratulations.”
“Thanks Bobby.” Sue signed smiling.
“You mean it wasn’t a joke.” Lucy asked.
Sue just held out her hand to show her the ring. “Nope.”
“Oh my gosh!” Lucy squealed getting up to hug her best friend. “I’m so happy for you.”
After a round of congratulations things had settled down slightly.
“How long have you guys been dating?” Tara asked.
“Actually I don’t think we ever had a date.” Sue said. “But I guess since two Saturdays ago.”
“Two weeks?” Bobby asked. “That’s got to be a record.”
“I doubt it, but we’re trying….” Jack was interrupted by a knock on the door.
“Who else is coming?” Myles asked.
“Just an old friend…” Jack said going to answer the door.
“Hey Jack. You ready to do this?” The man at the door asked.
“You bet! Come on in.” Jack said letting him in.
“Hey Judge Kendell what are you doing here?” Bobby asked.
“This is the last surprise of the evening.” Sue said.
“If you would all please gather around we have a ceremony to perform.” Judge Kendell said.
“You’re getting married tonight?!” Lucy asked.
“Yep.”
Everyone had tears in their eyes as the judge performed the service.
“I now pronounce you husband and wife, you may kiss the bride.”
