Friday December 24, 2004“Ok. So what first?” Jack asked as he and Sue stood in his kitchen.
“Well what do you think?” Sue countered.
“The pies?” Jack guessed.
“Ok.”
“Ok?”
“Yeah, we’ll start with those.” Sue said. “I’ll roll the dough and you open the fillings.”
“Yes ma’am.”
After hours of cooking the pair took a seat on the couch. They had a good time and got away with next to no mess, minus the flour that ended up all over the floor.
“You know Thomas, you have pretty good aim.” Jack complemented looking at the flour on his shirt.
“Well you’re an easy target. Especially when you don’t think I would do it.” Sue said brushing some of the flour out of his hair. “You know you don’t look half bad with gray hair.” She teased.
“I’m glad, I now feel secure that you won’t leave me when I start getting gray hairs.” Jack said.
“It’s a little to late for that.” She said pulling out a hair.
“Ouch!”
“Sorry I thought it was a gray hair, but it was only flour.” Sue said getting up quickly, trying to outrun Jack.
Jack, however, anticipated it and went around the other end of the couch. He soon caught her in his arms and held her there. He turned her around so she could see what he was saying. “Hold still.” His arms moved from her waist up to her neck where he undid her necklace. “This belongs somewhere else.” After replacing the necklace he caught her lips with his.
After pulling apart she said, “I’d better go get changed, the others will be here soon.”
“Yeah, you can change in my room if you’d like.” Jack said.
“Thanks, and could you please take the food out of the oven?”
“Sure.” Jack said going into the kitchen. A few minutes later the doorbell rang. Jack noticed it was still an hour or so before anyone was supposed to be here. As he opened the door he was surprised to see Garrett on the other side.
“Hi Jack. I hope you don’t mind but I thought I’d stop by early and see if you need help with anything.” Garrett said looking at Jack’s floury appearance.
“No, it’s fine. Come on in.” Jack said opening the door wider, allowing Garrett to step in.
“Jack did you get the…Hi.” Sue said walking out of Jack’s bedroom.
“Hello. Jack, I see you followed my instructions.” Garrett said approvingly.
“Ah, yes sir. I was going to anyway, I had already bought…”
“Does this have something to do with the envelope?” Sue asked.
“Yes.” Jack said pulling the envelope out of a drawer and handing it to her.
“And here I was worried about telling you.” Sue said to Garrett after reading the note.
“That’s why I did it. I didn’t know Jack had already bought it but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to push him in the right direction.” Ted said smiling.
“Thank you sir.” Sue said taking Jack’s hand.
“Tonight I’m Ted. Is there anything I can do to help?” Ted asked.
“You can pick out some music.” Jack suggested. “The food’s just about ready. We just have to do some cleaning up.”
“I can see that.” Ted said turning to pick out some music.
“I’m going to go change.” Jack told Sue.
About 45 minutes later Bobby showed up with Darcy, shortly followed by Tara and Stanley.
“Is this what you’ve been planning?” Tara asked.
“Yep.”
“Wow, you guys did a great job!”
“Thanks!” Sue said tucking a piece of hair behind her ear just as Bobby walked over.
“Hey Sparky, nice job, and congrats.”
“How did you…?”
“I saw something hit the light, and I took a guess that you finally came to your senses.”
“Yeah well it looks like that bag will be useful after all.” Jack said. “But don’t say anything yet, we’re waiting till later to announce it. That is if none of the girls catch it.”
Within the next ten minutes everyone else had arrived; D with his family, Myles, and Lucy. Soon everyone was snacking and enjoying him or herself.
“If we could have everyone’s attention.” Jack called out over the noise. “We have a few things to sort out.”
Sue and Jack made their way over to the Christmas tree and everyone gathered around them. “Now this being the season of giving we have found a few gifts for our team members, to say thanks for being there for us.” Sue said as Jack passed out the presents.
Starting with Bobby each opened their gift. Bobby got a tie-dye tie, Lucy got a necklace, Tara got a few pens with a computer program, Myles got tickets to the opera, and D got two tickets to a play with a promise for free babysitting by either Jack or Sue.
“Thanks you guys! Tara said.
“We appreciate it.” D said holding Donna’s hand.
“Well we’re not done yet.” Sue said.
“Ted this is for you.” Jack said handing their boss a gift.
“You didn’t have…” Ted started.
“Yes we did.” Sue said taking Jack’s hand in hers.
Everyone watched as Ted opened his gift certificate for Outback Steakhouse. “Thanks you two.”
“What about you two?” Tara asked. “You didn’t get anything.”
“Well actually Sue got her gift a couple of days ago. I however am still waiting for mine.”
“Very funny. And it’s true I already have mine, Jack will get his tomorrow.” Sue said. “So you’ll have to wait to find out what his is.”
“Well are you going to tell us what yours was?” Lucy asked.
“That was actually next on our list of surprises.” Jack said. “Sue and I are getting married.”
Everyone sat there in shock. Everyone, that is, except Bobby who after a minute started laughing at everyone else’s response.
“Congrats!” He said through his laughing.
“What did he say?” Sue asked.
“Congratulations.”
“Thanks Bobby.” Sue signed smiling.
“You mean it wasn’t a joke.” Lucy asked.
Sue just held out her hand to show her the ring. “Nope.”
“Oh my gosh!” Lucy squealed getting up to hug her best friend. “I’m so happy for you.”
After a round of congratulations things had settled down slightly.
“How long have you guys been dating?” Tara asked.
“Actually I don’t think we ever had a date.” Sue said. “But I guess since two Saturdays ago.”
“Two weeks?” Bobby asked. “That’s got to be a record.”
“I doubt it, but we’re trying….” Jack was interrupted by a knock on the door.
“Who else is coming?” Myles asked.
“Just an old friend…” Jack said going to answer the door.
“Hey Jack. You ready to do this?” The man at the door asked.
“You bet! Come on in.” Jack said letting him in.
“Hey Judge Kendell what are you doing here?” Bobby asked.
“This is the last surprise of the evening.” Sue said.
“If you would all please gather around we have a ceremony to perform.” Judge Kendell said.
“You’re getting married tonight?!” Lucy asked.
“Yep.”
Everyone had tears in their eyes as the judge performed the service.
“I now pronounce you husband and wife, you may kiss the bride.”
