This is a great story. I cant believe all their colleagues were so speechless!
So no one knows they are getting married yet?
Has anyone explained who the baby is?
Didn't they go away as friends?
Now they are staying at Jacks?
Come on Bobby and Lucy. We need the gossip!

For the first time, Adam skipped his three o’clock feeding to only wake up at six, which gave them a very resting night. Sue and Jack thanked Lucy and promised to fill her in on their return.
Tim Long’s night interrogation revealed the existence of an old girlfriend who worked at the Bank of America by the Park. Just in case both sites were still guarded but the emphasis was put on the later. Tara and Sue were in the van, while Myles, Bobby, D and Jack were undercover in the street and in the bank. On Saturday the bank was only open from 10am to 1pm. At 12:30 the suspect was spotted entering. He went to customer service and asked for his safety deposit box. While he was led to it by an employee, the branch was evacuated. He was then left alone, or so he thought, in a private cubicle. He was handcuffed before he had a chance to set his explosive.
They all met at Jack’s for a victory lunch, consisting of take-out food, mainly pizza and Chinese. A screaming baby was waiting for them. As soon as he heard Sue’s voice, Adam turned his head in her direction. He calmed down as she picked him up.
“OK sheila, who’s the little devil? Did I miss the last nine months?”
“I know he sounds just like Jack, but no, you didn’t.”
“Hold on here”, going to her and wrapping her in his arms. “What did I do to deserve that?” She mischievously kissed him in front of the others.
“I think we missed a lot, Bobby”, teased Tara. “Out with it, you two.”
“First”, started Jack. “I don’t know what possessed me but I asked Sue to marry me and she agreed.”
Everyone was so happy.
“Tell me, mate, what possessed HER to say yes?”
“He’s good at changing diapers”, answered Sue cutting Jack’s reply. There was no way she was letting him tell how it happened. But they filled them in on James and Kate, the baby, the funeral, the storm, the trip to Jack’s parents. Adam’s parents were flying back to DC tomorrow morning and they were meeting at the airport.
“WOW! Next time he promises you a nice weekend away, sheila, read the fine print.”
All was in good fun, Bobby teasing them mercilessly, the others barely a step behind. D was the first one to leave, Donna and the children waiting for him to decorate the Christmas tree. The others stayed for the evening. They ordered more food and played cards, little Adam being very reasonable as long as he stayed in Sue or Jack’s arms.

Sunday, Dec 12, 2004.
Washington was covered by a blanket of ice. The trees looked like crystal figurines through the sunshine. For most of the night freezing rain had fallen. All non essential services were closed. All airports, bus stations and train stations were experiencing delays or cancellations. Jack got a phone call from James. Their flight had been canceled. They wouldn’t be arriving until late Monday afternoon. James felt really sorry about what he was putting them through. Jack reassured him, it wasn’t a problem and Adam was doing fine.
The spent the day decorating Jack’s apartment for Christmas. The ice having melted on the main roads, they were able to attend the six o’clock church service. During the announcement, the minister mentioned a special blessing ceremony on Christmas Eve for all the couples who wished for a holiday engagement. The choir was already mixing some Christmas hymns with their more traditional ones. Jack couldn’t resist holding her hand the entire mass. After the service they met the minister who was more than happy to add them to his list. Jack didn’t know who was more surprised, him or the minister when Sue inquired about a Christmas wedding instead. The minister grinned at the priceless look on Jack’s face. Unfortunately, he stopped performing Christmas wedding a long time ago, just too busy. But ... for Sue he could probably do a New Year wedding if they really insisted. They were to let him know by the end of the week. He blessed their little godson before sending them home.
That evening with Adam cuddling to Jack, they discussed it. The timing would be good, their families and friends would be available and it was in less than three weeks. They agreed to it. The challenge was what they were going to do until then, once Adam was gone. That little baby between them was the only thing that kept them from misbehaving and they both knew it.

Monday. Dec 13, 2004
Between the paperwork from Saturday bombing attempt and the news of a January 1st wedding, the morning in the bullpen just flew by. Jack and Sue talked to Garrett and he supported their decision. He would find a loophole somewhere to keep them together. In Garrett’s eyes, his team was the best, and the romance that ensued was just an extension of it. He had been aware of their attraction for a while, just like the rest of the team had, couldn’t understand it took Thomas and Hudson so long to acknowledge it. He was happy the little child finally brought them together. Now he could see another romance developing and wondered how long it would take those two to act on it. His phone rang, putting an end to his speculation.
Lucy, Sue and Levi had gone out for lunch, Jack being more than happy to keep Adam in the bullpen. Lucy wanted Sue to know that she could move out and stop paying the rent anytime she chose without guilt, her cousin having offer to move in with Lucy.
“Luce, I’m marrying Jack. You don’t have to set us up anymore”, laughing hard.
“Sue, I’m not kicking you out, but you have been living and sleeping with the guy for the last twelve days.”
“We had the baby, Luce. It’s not like we …” Lucy raised an eyebrow at her, she was on slippery ground here. “Jack and I talked about it last night”, she continued. “There’s a big part of me that wants to stay with him, and a tiny part that tells me to behave.”
“Tell me you haven’t been listening to the tiny part.” Sue blushed, which made Lucy laugh even louder. “What does Jack think? Let me answer for you. A big part for staying, no part for behaving.”
“A tidbit for behaving” corrected Sue, sending them unto another laughing spree. “Actually he said he would go with what I decide. What should I do?” suddenly very serious.
And for once Lucy had no answer.
When they got back to the bullpen way past lunchtime, the atmosphere was grim. Jack was pacing, Adam safely tucked on his shoulder. The others were staring at nothing, avoiding Jack’s gaze.
“A commercial plane was hijacked on its way to DC. All agencies are on full alert”, explained D. “They lost radio and radar contact fifteen minutes ago.”
Sue went to Jack. She could see grief in his eyes. He was clutching little Adam way too tight. “James and Kate’s flight”, he whispered before pulling her to him with his free hand. Tears filled her eyes. He let go of Adam when she reached for him, and with both hands, Jack hugged them both.
“Bobby, drive them home, please”, ordered D.
“It won’t be necessary”, argued Jack.
“You’re way too close to this case, Jack, and you know it. You and Sue take the rest of the day, we’ll keep you posted, I promise.”
“D is right, mate. Let’s go home.”
“Thanks Bobby.” The shock was passed, the numbness was creeping in. They were right he needed some time alone with Sue. “I can drive myself …and yes I am sure.”
Bobby was about to insist some more when he caught D’s silent advice. Jack was back in control. He would keep them safe.

Yesterday’s tragedy came back to haunt him as soon as reality sunk in. He was on his side with Sue in his arms, her back against his chest. They were both holding the little child against her. Jack stroked the little head. He peeked over Sue’s shoulder, Adam was sucking his thumb, deeply asleep. They had put a pillow sideways in case Adam rolled. He leaned back. Sue breathing was deep and regular. She had cried herself to sleep last night. For the first time he took the three o’clock feeding. Adam had been good, unaware of the impact of his parents’ disappearance. As of last night, the plane was still missing. They had found the pilot and co-pilot beat up but alive in a storage room at the airport along with the luggage that should have been on board. How that happened with the new security measures was anybody’s guess. He would make sure Sue and Adam were fine then he would go at the bureau.
They all showed up at work, Sue refusing to stay alone with Adam while imagining the worse. The discovery came mid-morning. The plane had been found on a man shift airstrip in the Bolivian jungle. A team was on its way, the local authority cooperating in the investigation.
Myles surprised Jack with a business card.
“Jack, this is a friend of mine. He’s a very good family attorney. You may want to call him as soon as possible and secure Adam’s custody. A guardianship letter will only take you so far. I hope it’s only a precaution”, with that he returned to his desk. Sue had caught the conversation and nodded to Jack. He took his phone and set up an appointment.
Later in the afternoon, they learned the plane had crashed attempting to land. They recovered eleven bodies in the mostly intact fuselage. According to the records the flight had 203 passengers and 7 crewmembers. Which left 197 people unaccounted for, including James and Kate. The cargo was gone but traces of drugs remained. Because of the ice storm, that flight, originally scheduled as an empty cargo flight, had been changed to a passenger flight. The DEA’s theory was they stumbled by accident onto a smuggling operation, a very well oil smuggling operation.
Jack and Sue stopped at the attorney’s office on their way home. A custody demand was filed immediately pending James and Kate's whereabouts. For the moment, James’ letter was giving them full parental rights over Adam.

The bullpen was quiet. No new case, and their office wasn’t involved with the airport investigation. Jack and Sue took the rest of the day to do some shopping. Top of the list, a crib for Adam before he forgot how to fall asleep by himself. They also needed diapers, formulas, clothes, blankets, …Sue had an extensive list.
Despite the situation they enjoyed themselves. Adam was happy and cooing in the store. They really hoped James and Kate were still alive, but if the worse was to happen they would make sure their son would be loved and taking care of.
Jack assembled the crib while Sue enjoyed a long bath with Adam. The little guy just loved kicking in the water. When Jack came in he found more water on the floor than the tub, Sue and Adam were both grinning. After his last feeding, they placed him on the freshly washed sheet. He quickly found his thumb before falling asleep.
Tomorrow they would phone the minister for their wedding, they would also call their parents with the news. They were still debating if she should be moving in or not, but as long as Adam was here, so was she. An for the first time since they were back in Washington, Jack had her all to himself …till the three o’clock feeding.

The phone woke Jack up. Adam was back between them. That three o’clock feeding puzzled him once again.
“Jack Hudson”, still half asleep.
“Hi mate, did I wake you up? Don’t you have a baby to do that?”
“Bobby! It’s 6am. Where are you?”
“At work, couldn’t sleep.”
“You had another fight with Darcy”, guessed Jack correctly.
“That’s another way to put it. Listen, I thought you could use some good news this morning.”
“They found Adam’s parents?”
“Sorry Sparky, I said good, not great. The found 43 people so far, all alive. According to their testimonies, after the crash, the smugglers rounded them up, placed them in trucks and left them in the middle of the jungle to themselves by groups of five or six.”
“Who’s looking for them?”
“The marines are in Bolivia using all their high-tech equipment tracking every inch of that jungle. Just hold on …found five more. No name yet.”
“Alive?”
“Yah, needing medical attention, but who wouldn’t after a plane crash. Sue would tell you it’s hope, mate. They will get to James and Kate. By the way, how was the little devil's first night in the new crib?”
“He fell asleep right away”, forgetting he was talking to Bobby.
“So …who was keeping you and your future bride in line last night then?” Jack could just imagine Bobby’s grin.
“Bobby, 6am is too early for that line of questioning, even coming from you. Go patch things up with Darcy, and stay out of my love life.” Bobby was now laughing.
“Fine, mate. I will wait till later at the office to ask again. And I am happy that at least one of us has a love life. Bye.” He hung up before Jack could reply, which made him reconsider going to work.
Adam was stirring when he got back to them. He warmed a bottle, sat in bed and gave it to him. Sue just enjoyed the sight. He told her about Bobby’s call. She sent a silent prayer. They would find Adam’s parents, alive, she was sure of it. It was called ‘hope’, she told Jack. And they were in the perfect season for it.
77 was the new total when they showed up to work. All alive. The further away they were from the dropping zone, in better shape they found the survivors. Which made sense since they could venture further.
“What happened to stay put and wait for help”, mumbled Myles. “They should add that announcement right after the seat belt demonstration.”
Bobby noticed that Sue and Jack were also in better shape. He wondered if they realized how much they would miss the little guy.
“So mate, …”
“Bobby! Still too early.”
“See, I had forgotten about that. Any plan yet with what you’ll do with that crib once Adam is back in Wisconsin?” Yah, exactly the same grin Jack imagined on Bobby’s face this morning.
“That also enters the too early category.”
“Too early for what exactly, mate?” which actually caught Jack deadpan. Unfortunately Jack had no paperwork to go to and it wasn’t lunchtime yet, so he was left with staring at Bobby. Until he remembered the phone calls he needed to make.
At the end of the day, they had retrieved 102 people, all alive. Still no news of James and Kate.

Jack was beginning to see a pattern here, miss the three o’clock feeding, find Adam between them and answer the darn phone at 6am. If it was Bobby again, he was going to go see Darcy and beg her to take him back.
“Jack Hudson”, his voice rusty.
“Hello Jack. Did I wake you up?” Why was everyone asking him that at 6am? “Don’t you have a baby that’s doing it for you?” Come to think of it he didn’t even know his interlocutor or at least he didn’t think he did.
“Who am I talking to?” forcing his brain to work.
“Oh! Sorry, we never talked before. It’s Jeffrey …Jeffrey Thomas. Sue’s older brother.”
“The one with the two kids, right?” Hoping he was right.
“Yes. I see Sue filled you in.”
“Well, she carries your kids’ picture in her wallet and she does have a family picture in her room”, as soon as he said it he wished he could take it back. Jack, wake up, you’re talking to Sue’s brother, he’ll never let you live. He could tell Jeffrey was amused.
“Where’s Sue?”
“Asleep in …” In my bed would have been another bad answer. That guy was worse than Bobby. “With the baby. How do you know about him anyway?” Good move, Jack, go for the offensive.
“We arrived at mom’s after Sue phoned last night to announce the good news. So, January 1st, we will be there of course. Wouldn’t miss my little sister's wedding for the world. But isn’t that a bit rush? Any particular reason?”
Jack had to laugh. Jeffrey had him just where he wanted. He was been grilled by a pro, no worse …by an older brother. And just when he thought the conversation couldn’t go worse …well, it did.
He didn’t have time to put the phone down it rang again.
“Jack Hudson.”
“Hello Jack. How’s life? Is my sister treating you well?” Another one of Sue’s brother?
“Who …”
“It’s Nick Thomas. You do start your day early, man. What time is it in DC, 6:30?”
“That would be about right, Nick.”
“I am happy I caught you before work. I’m looking forward to meet you. I heard a lot about you. I didn’t know you and Sue were dating though. Well, my sister has always been secretive. How long as it been anyway?”
Nick wasn’t as good as Jeffrey but he did corner him once or twice. Two down, one to go. He wondered when her younger brother would phone as he hung up. He didn’t have long to wait.
“Jack Hudson.”
“Hello Jack. Let me congratulate you first.”
“Thank you. And let me guess …Michael Thomas?”
“The one and only. Please call me Mikey. How did you know?”
“Let's say I had the pleasure of talking to your brothers.”
“Yah, don’t tell anyone, but I’m Sue’s favorite brother.”
“And I’m sure she’s your favorite sister.”
“Of course. What’s not to love? She’s smart, funny, passionate …” Here we go again, thought Jack. He had to give Mikey credit, he was a smooth operator.
Sue was in the doorway with Adam, already dressed, when he hung up.
“Your three brothers, half hour interrogation each. I think I passed the last two, not sure about Jeffrey.” She had an enigmatic smile on her face. “Something you want to share?”
“I bet they asked how we met, how long we’ve been dating, why we were getting married so fast?”
“Along that line.” She still had that puzzled expression. “Sue?”
“Did you tell them the same story, Jack?”
“Kind of. Story 1 and 2 were similar, so was story 2 and 3. I am not sure how much story 1 and 3 had in common though.”
She laughed so hard that Adam started to cry, but she couldn’t stop. He took the baby from her.
“They will compare story, won’t they?” She nodded and shook her head at the same time. “Am I doomed?” She vigorously nodded.
Finally she controlled herself enough to explain. “Jack, I could bet you anything, they were all on the phone at the same time. They all heard what you said to each of them. They will have a fieldtrip with you when they come down. But I love you.” She kissed him. “At the end that will be the only thing that matters to them. Ready to leave for work?” taking the baby back.
He needed a shower, a long shower.
This morning the count was up to 124, with 2 casualties. A young man losing his footing on the edge of a cliff, and an elderly woman drowning. Still no signs of James and Kate.
Eleanor Rippendorf made an appearance shortly before lunchtime, eyeing Jack while she was talking to Dimitrius.
“Just to remind you, agent Gans, of the kids Christmas party we are having Saturday at 1pm.” She checked her list. “Two children, David and Tanya, right?”
“Yes. We’ll be there.”
Garrett came in as Eleanor made her way to Jack.
“Thomas, Hudson”, he said loudly. “There’s a daycare on the second floor, one of you may want to check it out.” Winking at Sue.
Little Adam wailed at the loud voice. That stopped Eleanor dead in her track. She turned to Sue.
“Yes, sir” as Sue picked him up from his car seat beside her desk. “It’s OK Adam”, soothing him.
Eleanor was standing in front of Sue’s desk.
“Who’s that?”
“His name is Adam”, she lowered him on her desk. His big brown eyes were staring at Eleanor. He started crying again as Eleanor approached him. Sue placed him back on her shoulder. “He is shy, doesn’t like stranger.”
“He has brown eyes?” realized Eleanor as Jack moved beside Sue.
“Aren’t they gorgeous? Just like his dad”, Sue answered, tenderly looking at Jack.
Eleanor’s gaze went from Sue, to the baby, to Jack’s brown eyes.
“Now I know why I haven’t seen you for a while, Sue.” Sue let the comment pass.
“Eleanor, is it too late to add Adam to your list?” Turning to Sue. “His first Christmas party, what do you say, darling?”
“That would be a nice way to spend Saturday afternoon, Jack.”
Eleanor reluctantly added Adam to the list before leaving.
The others were staring at Sue and Jack, doing their best to keep their poker face until Eleanor was gone.
“Brown eyes? Like his dad?” repeated Lucy.
“James has brown eyes”, replies Sue, innocently. “Adam has his father’s eyes. Not my fault she interpreted it differently.”
Jack gave her a kiss. “You’re terrific.”
“Hey! Hey! Not at the office, mate. You’ll really be in trouble with Garrett.”
“Look who’s talking”, commented Myles, rolling his eyes. Bobby just ignored him.
“Way to go little Adam! Mate, that kid has great taste in women. See how he began to cry when she approached him.”
When they left, the count was at 136, no new casualty. No James or Kate.

Priceless the way they pulled the wool over Eleanor's eyes in that scene. Also thought it was hilarious how poor Jack had to wake up to three separate interrogations by Sue's brothers. Tonight, I am a very blessed woman. It felt really good to hug my daughter after four months away.
Here's some more
Saturday, Dec 18, 2004
Midmorning, Sue stopped by her own apartment to pick up some clothes. Lucy and her cousin were having breakfast. The living room was piled with boxes. Lucy’s cousin had been kicked out yesterday and was temporarily staying in Sue’s room. While Sue was packing a box full of clothes, Lucy joined her.
“Are you mad?”
“Why?” not comprehending Lucy
“Because I let my cousin stay here.”
“Of course not, Lucy. I don’t live here anymore”, she stopped herself as she realized what she just said. “That just answered my own question, doesn’t it?” Lucy nodded. “I am there as much for Jack as I am for Adam. I can’t wait to marry him. Fourteen days left.” Lucy giggled with her. “Would it be fine with you if I was to move everything out tomorrow?”
“Sue, there is no rush. Her boxes are not going anywhere.”
“Yah, but mine should, and that will keep Jack out of trouble.”
“I will miss you”, admitted Lucy, hugging her. “I hope you will still come and visit.”
“You will remain my best friend, Luce. I am not moving out of state. Would you be my maid of honor?” The request brought tears to Lucy’s eyes.
“It will be my pleasure. Thank you.”
“I have to finish this box, we have Adam’s party to go to.”
“Have fun with Jack and Adam.”
“I plan to.”
The party was in full swing when Jack and Sue arrived. There were kids running everywhere. A table filled with food was pushed against the wall. Donna and Dimitrius waved at them. Jack and Sue joined them, little Adam wide awake on Sue’s shoulder. When Santa showed up, the noise level hit a new high. Kids were lining up to touch the jolly old man. Everyone gathered around him singing Christmas song. Leaning her back against Jack, his arms around her waist, she was singing for little Adam. D and Donna in a similar comfortable position were exchanging knowing looks, Sue and Jack were making a lovely couple. Mrs. Claus then started calling kids name starting with the older ones. Sue recognized Eleanor as Mrs. Claus. One after the other, the children went to Santa. Tanya got back to her parents with a puzzle and a book, and David with a Lego construction set. Soon it was time for the very little one, baby Amy, baby Tim, baby Adam. Sue could feel Eleanor’s gaze on her as she went to Santa with Adam. He got a blue rattle that went directly into his mouth.
“What did you get?” asked Jack as he picked the little guy. But Adam was grabbing the toy tightly, chewing the soft round end. “I guess he likes it”, sitting him up in his arm.
“He is so adorable”, exclaimed Donna.
“Is he yours?” asked Tanya, looking at Sue and Jack. Only a child could be that direct.
“Right now, he is”, answered honestly Sue. “Until his real parents come back.”
“Where are they?”
“They …they are away for a while”, helped Jack.
“Why didn’t they take the baby with …”
“Tanya”, interrupted her dad. “You should go play with the other children.”
“But dad …”
“Now please”, advised D, gently nudging his daughter in the right direction. “Sorry, guys.”
“D, she was only curious”, understood Sue. “You have to admit, it is complicated.”
“I am sure everything will work out for the best”, hoped Donna. “Either way, he’s a very lucky little guy.”
“He still belongs to his real parents”, expressed Jack. “Though …I wish he was ours.” There was a longing in his eyes as he pulled his future wife to him. “I will miss him very much”, he told Sue looking straight at her.
“So will I”, she whispered to his ear, before kissing him.
“I wish a little one come their way soon”, Donna whispered to her husband, still feeling the loss of her third child.
“So do I”, he murmured back. “Food anyone”, D offered louder.
They all agreed and headed for the table. They all left together as little Adam began to fuss, ready for his own bottle.

Sunday Dec 19, 2004
On their way back from church, Sue remembered to tell Jack about her afternoon moving plan. His heart skipped a beat as he processed the information. If he hadn’t been driving, it would have hugged her. He settled by taking her hand into his and holding tight.
“I thought you wouldn’t object.” She was beaming at him.
“I was hoping you would stay with me, but I didn’t want to push you. Either way, I am still marrying you.”
“Another thing I love about you, Jack.”
“I think I will call Bobby and see if he wants something to do this afternoon.”
“And he could stay for dinner. He’s still down, Darcy hasn’t spoken to him since the fight.” Jack gave her a puzzled look. “He told me, Jack. It affects him more than he will admit.”
“Yah, but they are both too stubborn.” Jack reached for the back seat and Adam’s hand. “He lost his new toy and he’s crying. We’re almost there.”
Bobby gladly accepted the invitation and soon Sue’s apartment turned into an organized chaos. Little Adam was spending more time awake lately, taking in the activities around him. They all ended up having dinner there since Lucy’s cousin was an assistant Chef and she needed the practice.
By the time they went to bed, almost all the boxes had been emptied. Sue knew she was finally home.

Hey Marlo. This is very impressive, especially the speed that you are managing to write at.
I'm sure in one of the episodes Myles says lack of time and a tight budget produce superior results. Well I dont know about the money bit, but you can certainly deliever the goods whilst under pressure.
Looking foward to the next few posts.

I'm just catching up and have to say I was just speed reading each entry trying to find out what's coming next. Really great!!! At least we don't have to wait for long now to see what's happening with the parents -- but even a minute's too long to wait -- this is just so good.

Wow..I just caught up on this one. What a great story you're creating here, Marlo! And I'm still holding out hope that Adam's parents will be found. As much as I like seeing him with Jack and Sue, I really hope they find his parents. Congrats about your daughter, Marlo! I hope you have a great Christmas.

Monday, Dec 20, 2004.
When Sue got up at three with Adam, she found a wrapped Christmas present on the kitchen table. She took Adam’s bottle and the gift to the living room. She comfortably positioned herself on the couch, Adam gripping his bottle as soon as it came within reach. A free hand was tracing the fold of the wrapping paper. She debated if she should or not open it. Then again, Jack wouldn’t have left it there if he didn’t want her to, would he? No …She read the card first ‘To Sue and Adam. To make both your afternoon shopping experience more enjoyable and convenient.’ She didn’t know he heard her and Lucy make plan for the afternoon. She was planning to tell him later she was taking the afternoon off to finish their Christmas shopping. Now she was excited like a child in a candy store. Adam was looking at her, his eyes as big as saucer, probably wondering what was wrong with her. He never got that much excitement during the night feeding. She ripped the paper and opened the box. She pulled out a grey and blue snugli, a pouch to wrap around her chest, with wide padded straps that securely fastened down her shoulders, across her back, to her side. Adam would be warm and cozy against her while her arms would be free from his weight and her hands available for shopping. ‘We will have a wonderful afternoon, Adam. Too bad Jack didn’t leave his credit card as well.’ After changing his diaper she went back to bed with him by her side, kissing a sleeping Jack ‘thank you’.
Garrett came out of his office once the entire team was in. He called them into the conference room. He had just received an update on the search. They were down to one last missing group of six people. During the weekend everyone else had been found alive, except for one more victim. James and Kate were part of the last missing group. The six were spotted alive looking for food in a native village two days earlier, miles away from the dropping zone as they were heading into an area under heavy guerrillas’ control. Garrett’s gaze went from Jack to Sue before continuing.
“I regret to tell you that the rescue unit has been recalled, the Bolivian government refusing them access to that area.” Jack and Sue were crushed.
“And why?” managed to ask Jack.
“Official explanation, they don’t want to give the guerrillas anymore American hostages than they already have. They don’t negotiate with them”, finished Garrett as Jack’s cell rang.
“Hudson …They did already …No, its good …Still missing …Not yet …I get what you’re saying”, getting upset. “Custody is good enough …I am not filing for adoption while his parents are still alive …You listen …” Myles took the phone from Jack’s hand. “Hi Clyde, it’s Myles. Jack will call you back later. Thanks.”
Jack was tempted to hit Myles who was expecting it but he got the table instead. Adam woke up instantly forcing Levi to put his paw on Sue’s lap. Sue picked him up and soothed him, her heart aching like Jack’s.
“Myles!” Jack was furious. “You …”
“If that makes you feel better we can take it outside. It won’t change anything. If fate is cruel enough to take Adam’s parents, your guilt should not rob him from his second family. Adam deserves better. We have all seen very good people falling victim of very bad events. It’s life and it isn’t fair.”
“Don’t play psychologist on me, Myles. James and Kate are trapped in the jungle and there is nothing I can do to change that, except take care of their son.”
“And you feel guilty because you and Sue utterly fell in love with Adam …like he was yours. Has it ever occurred to you that maybe it was God’s way to make it up to Adam? Human greed and cruelty are responsible for what happened to your friends, not you. Didn’t James choose you to be his son’s godfather?”
“Somehow I don’t think he thought we were going to adopt him”, barely under control, grief and guilt overwhelming him.
“But I bet you anything, mate, had James been able to foresee it, he would have made the same decision”, coming to Myles’ rescue.
“Jack”, D’s turn to intervene. “A child is always a blessing, no matter the circumstances. Don’t make the same mistake I did. Walking away from Adam will only hurt Adam.”
As on cue, one after the other they exited the room, leaving Sue and Jack alone. Tears falling down, Sue went to Jack who took her and Adam in his arms. His attorney’s phone call had sent him over the edge. Feeling Jack regaining control, Sue pulled away so she could read him.
“It does suck that Myles is right, doesn’t it Jack?” He had to smile at her, she didn’t usually use that word. “Maybe we shouldn’t give up hope just yet.”
“You heard Ted. Their chances just went down to zero.”
“Tell me Jack, if you were lost, how hard would you try to get back to Adam and me?”
“Till my last breath.” He paused. “I love you, you know …and I do love Adam.” She just nodded. “And I owe Myles an apology.” She nodded again. “You could have said no to that one.” She tenderly kissed him.
The gang was relieved when Jack holding Adam and Sue finally came out of the conference. He apologized to them for his outburst.
“No need, mate. I would have done worse, I would have hit Myles. On the other hand, your attorney had a lousy timing.”
“But good intention”, admitted Jack. “He wants to make sure we don’t lose Adam to some third degree cousin of James.” His admission made everyone relax. “Please, feel free to remind me how lucky I am to have Sue and Adam in my life.”
“Well, Jack, you are, but don’t force me to make that speech twice, it could ruin my reputation” pleaded Myles, going back to his work.
By lunchtime the tension had totally dissipated. As soon as Adam’s bottle was empty Sue and Lucy left for the stores. Whoever invented the snugli had given mom a new freedom, she loved it so did Adam. Excitement was in the air when they returned to the bullpen. There was going to be a friendly hockey game tomorrow afternoon at the civic center between the DEA and White Collar. Being short of players, White Collar had asked if their team could provide four guys to help defeat DEA. Jack, Bobby, D and Myles were more than happy to oblige. They always found great satisfaction into defeating the smugly Nick Sanders and his DEA team.

A confrontation with his landlord wasn’t Jack’s first thought of activity for this morning but it happened nevertheless. Adam had been fussy all night, still was, as they were getting ready to leave. Jack loaded his hockey bag in the car.
Nick Sanders’ bragging about his team in the elevator didn’t improve Jack’s mood. Nor did the way Sanders was scrutinizing Sue and the baby. But Jack intended to vent his frustration on the ice, not make another scene at the office.
“Someone is in a good mood this morning”, commented Lucy, sarcastically. “Let me guess, you finally woke up at three, Jack.”
Sue signed ‘Don’t go there, please’, but too late.
“Can you believe my landlord gave me my fourth and final notice this morning?” exclaimed Jack.
“He’s kicking you out, mate?”
“Yes. My neighbor has been complaining all week about Adam, says the baby keeps him up at night. Adam barely makes a beep … well, except last night.”
Garrett cleared his throat. “Hudson, Thomas, my office, please.”
“Is it really necessary?” asked Jack. “Just say whatever you have to say here, Ted. I won’t be hitting anybody.”
“Is he always that grumpy in the morning, Thomas?” Garrett inquired, actually amused.
“Well, sir”, seriously pondering the answer. “Only when he doesn’t sleep …which doesn’t happen often”, with a twinkling of amusement in her eyes. “I hope you have good news.”
“To start with, I approved your request for time off from the 1st to the 9th. Second”, he gave Sue a piece of paper. “If you still have an attorney, he may want that.” Jack had moved and was reading over Sue’s shoulder. They exchanged a look. It stated the search for James and Kate had been called off and they were presumed lost.
“I guess if I double his fees Clyde might take me back as a client”, joked Jack, not amused. “Anything else, Ted?”
“A piece of advice, Jack. Get a house, move the crib out of your room and”, looking at Adam who was fussing over Sue’s shoulder. “Check the daycare on the second floor.” As an afterthought, he added. “I would really like you guys to kick Sanders’ butt at the game this afternoon. I will be watching.”
“Did Garrett just increase the ante, mate?” grinning.
“I don’t think he meant it literally”, commented Tara. “Remember guys, it’s a fun game, no contact.”
The four guys just stared at each other, smiles creeping out. “Of course”, replied Jack. “We won’t hit … intentionally.”
“It’s a matter of honor, sheila. But we won’t start first.”
“Only retaliate …if necessary”, finished Myles.
“Men!” the three women exclaimed simultaneously.
“Which remind me, mate. Where are you planning to go between the 1st and the 9th?” grinning widely. “Some romantic getaway?”
“Looking for a house”, answered Jack, very seriously. They had discussed it in the car and agreed. At the moment, they had more important priorities than a trip. As long as they were together, they were happy.
Tara, Lucy, Sue and Donna were huddled together at the ring. D’s children were running in the bleachers. There were other clusters of spouses and children. They played a four on four format. Three forward and one defenseman on the ice at all time, plus the goalie. The assistant director of DEA was acting as referee. Jack was center with Bobby and D as his wingmen, Myles was defense. Their goalie was from White Collar. Their line alternated with the White collar line. The game was clean and fast paced for the first half hour. The DEA team was better skilled, the 10-6 score reflecting it. DEA changed their alignment for the second part of the game. At face off, Jack and Sanders were battling for possession of the puck. “If you’d stop looking at Thomas”, Sanders elbowed Jack out of the way, and passed the puck to his winger, “you’d play better.” Jack skated after the winger. Myles stopped him, gained the puck and passed to Bobby. They were going back in the other zone. Bobby passed to Jack who aimed for the top left corner, and didn’t miss. 10-7. White Collar line scored one more. 10-8. But DAE came back. 11-8. Another face off, center of the rink, Hudson and Sanders. They were glaring at each other. “Cute baby, Hudson”, Sanders whispered as his stick slashed Jack’s ankle. “Marrying its mother, are you?” But Jack passed the puck to D who had a break away and scored. His kids were yelling. 11-9. Another face off, more intimidation from Sanders. Jack won that one as well sending a few hits of his own on Sanders’ way. The play went back and forth until the opening Jack was waiting for happened. Perfect pass on Bobby’s stick to close the gap. 11-10. White Collar evened it out. 11-11. One minute left, Jack and Sanders, face off in White Collar’s zone. “You must have fun during stakeout with your trainee, Hudson”, murmured Sanders as the puck hit the ice. A fraction of second faster, Jack’s stick pushed it behind him for Myles who took off between Sanders and his winger. Bobby at his side they entered DEA’s zone. The defenseman stopped Myles but not before he could pass to Bobby. Bobby shot, the goalie made the save but left the rebound wild. Coming from the side Jack picked it up and scored. 12-11. The girls were cheering and jumping. The smirk disappeared from Sanders’ face as Jack skated to him. “I have a gorgeous wife, a beautiful baby, and I just kicked your arse”, he whispered. “I am a lucky man. No wonder you’re jealous, Sanders”, before skating out of the rink.
“What was that about, mate?” D and Myles were as puzzled. No one could understand Sanders’ taunting.
“Sanders just made my day. Let’s take the girls out and celebrate”, which they did. Even Adam was back to his old happy self. His first tooth finally out.

Jack was limping when he got up. Sanders’ stick had found the half an inch gap between his skate and his shin pad. He had a huge bruise. Darned. He had plans for tomorrow afternoon. Sue was feeding Adam. How could his neighbor complain when he couldn’t even hear him? Adam was really cute with the little bottom white tooth barely out of his gum. Jack felt it though when Adam grabbed his finger and put it in his mouth.
On their way to the bullpen, they stopped by the second floor. The daycare was bright. They got a quick tour. They were cribs for the little children but they rarely got infant younger than four months. The staff / children ratio was 1 to 5. If Sue and Jack wanted they could take Adam for an hour or two every day to get him used to it over the Christmas time and fulltime in January. Since they had the team Christmas party in the bullpen this afternoon, they would be back later for a short trial.
Dimitrius was particularly anxious to clear up his desk. Tomorrow, he was leaving for seven days with Donna and the kids to visit the grandparents.
“We’ll be back for your wedding but we are sorry to miss your engagement party.”
“No problem D, we don’t have an engagement party”, shrugged Jack.
“Actually, mate … you do. Sue was supposed to tell you.” Jack raised an eyebrow at her.
She signed ‘Sorry, I forgot.’
“Besides D, we all decided to stay in town and spend Christmas Eve together with you guys. Thought we could have a Christmas/Engagement Party”, explained Tara. “Myles kindly offered to host it since he has a bigger place. Don’t worry I will help him with the details”, as Jack’s eyes widened. “So …will you be there?”
“But you were all supposed to be somewhere else on Christmas Eve”, maintained Jack.
“That’s what friends are for, mate. Plus I already came up with lots of story about you two. You don’t want to spoil my evening, do you?” grinning even more than usual.
“Come to think of it, Bobby, maybe I do”, laughing. “That’s very generous and Sue and I appreciate a lot.” Sue concurred.
“Good, my house at 6pm. Now could we finish those reports for upstairs before the food arrives?” implored Myles. “I’m already hungry.”
The caterer came with the food as Adam was finishing his bottle. Sue and Jack took him to the daycare. He started to cry as soon as the young brunette took him from Sue’s arm.
“Don’t worry, they all cry at first. I will rock him and he will be fine.”
“You will call us if he isn’t”, insisted Sue. “You promise.”
“Yes, I will.”
“Come on Sue. They are waiting for us”, as he led her out, refraining from smiling. “You are worse than a mother hen”, he told her once they were alone in the elevator.
“Jack, I will take that as a compliment.” For a moment, she stopped focusing. “He is so little, Jack. Maybe she should just go back.”
“Sue, what is going on with you today?” stopping the elevator and taking her into his arm. “You hardly touched your breakfast, you forgot Adam’s bag when we left home, forgot to mention the party, spent most of the morning staring either at your computer screen without touching a key or at Adam.” Tears filled her eyes. He held her tight, kissing the top of her head and stroking her hair. “Whatever is bothering you, I will make it right”, he promised, lifting her chin and tenderly kissing her. He dried her eyes before pressing the elevator button but kept his arm around her waist. Tonight he would try to figure it out.
“Did you get lost, mate? We didn’t want to start without you.”
“Now, can we eat?”
“Yes, Myles”, Tara giving him a paper plate. “Sue, are you OK?”
“Yes … just a bit distracted. Food will do me lots of good” she reassured Tara, and it did. After her third serving she felt better, specially considering the many chocolate brownies she ate.
They had come up with a new game this year. Instead of giving each other gift, every person was to donate time and/or money to their favorite charity. They all had to fill a card with their guesses and the winner would get a beautiful centerpiece. They could only get one hint from everyone. The phone rang when they turned in their card.
“Jack, line 1”, announced Luce.
“Hudson …I will be right there. Thanks.” He left immediately. Ten minutes later he was back with a sobbing little guy. He handed him to Sue. Adam grabbed her shirt tightly and closed his eyes. She rocked him gently, silently questioning Jack. “It was not a success”, he conceded. She wasn’t surprised.
Tara’s charity was an after school science program that provided opportunities for underprivileged kids to enter college (they all got it). Lucy was the local kitchen soup that dispensed meal to disabled or senior citizens (only Bobby didn’t get that one). Sue was the children hospital (Jack was the only one who got it right). Myles was the library adult literacy program (only Tara and Sue getting it). Bobby was the YMCA youth program that kept kids off the streets (the three guys and Sue got it). Dimitrius was a refuge for battered women and their children (Sue and Jack guessing right). And Jack was a rehabilitation centre for teenagers battling substance abuse (Sue and Bobby were the only one who knew that). Sue was the only one with a perfect score. She asked Myles to take the centerpiece to his house for the party. He gladly accepted.
Sue and Jack spent a quiet evening at home. Sue had a long and relaxing bath. They went to bed at the same time than Adam. They talked for a while, Sue dodging his best effort at figuring her out. He finally stopped inquiring when she started doing some exploring of her own.
“Are you done talking, Jack?” she teased him, as her hands moved along his chest down his back.
“I can play that game too, you know”, kissing her passionately, tasting her skin.
“I hope so”, she whispered, losing any sense of reality. “I love you.”
++++
Good marines don’t question orders, they obey them. When their Captain ordered them not to enter the guerrillas’ zone, they didn’t enter. When their captain ordered them to retreat, they retreated …one hundred meters away from the invisible line. When their Captain ordered them to set camp and wait while he fixed their radio, they set camp and waited …even though they all knew the radio was fine. That was two days ago. The rule of engagement changed when the first shot was heard. When their Captain ordered them to go in because they were under fire, they went in even though the shots were not aimed at them. Good marines obey their Captain. Who their Captain obeys to, is up to their Captain. It is not their problem.

The last part of that post has me really hoping that Kate and James are going to be coming home to Adam soon. Meanwhile...I'm curious about what is up with Sue. Is it just the major changes that have been happening in her life, coupled with the sadness over Kate and James being lost, or is it something more?

When Jack woke up, his hand was resting on Adam’s back who was still fast asleep. He stroke his back, a touch of guilt creeping along once more until he reminded himself he wasn’t stealing James’ son, he was giving him the loving home he needed. The office was closing at noon today, he wanted to take both of them skating at the civic center. After the hockey game he had seen the advertisement. Family skating fun, 1 to 4pm, Christmas music, free hot chocolate and donuts. Sue was even a better skater than him, with Adam in the snugli they would have a nice time. But first they still needed to go to the office. He wondered if Adam …or Sue for that matter, were ready to give the daycare a second chance. Maybe that was what Sue had been struggling with. She had been doing such a great job so far balancing their new life but at a price he realized now. He had been so awkward with Adam at first, yet it had seemed so effortless coming from her, but looking back she probably had the same fear of inadequacy than him, unsure of every step. Then she had moved in with him willingly, something he knew that went against her strict upbringing. He couldn’t wait to marry her, somehow he was pretty sure God understood, yet he wanted to make it right by her. Then there was her job, a job she loved and shared with him, her means of independence that she fought so hard to achieve. Yet now it came in conflict with Adam. Maybe that was the choice she was pondering, work or stay at home. He needed to tell her it was fine with him if she wanted to stop or go part time. He was making enough for both of them, they would still be able to enjoy a comfortable life. They would have to budget their house on his salary alone just in case. She could act as an occasional consultant until Adam was a bit older. But maybe by then they could have another child. He could picture a tiny little blond infant daughter with her mother’s hazel eyes. He could actually picture many children with her. They had never really talked about it, wondering how many she would like. Three, Four, five? Easy for him to say, he had the enjoyable painless part of the job. She would be the one carrying them for nine months and getting up every night. Actually they seriously needed to train Levi to wake him up instead of Sue, she was getting tired. The next few days off would be welcome. This morning he would find an excuse to leave the bullpen for an hour or so, he had a ring to pick up that Sue didn’t know about. All along he had been unaware that Sue was observing him, noticing every nuance of his facial expression, and she liked everything she saw.
“I love you both so much”, he whispered.
“So do we”, she answered.
“How long have you been awake?” reaching to kiss her.
“Long enough to see you were watching what seemed like a very interesting movie in your mind. Care to share?”
“If I had to give it a title, let me think …A wonderful life with my wife and kids.” She laughed, a beautiful light crystal clear laugh that warmed his heart. “Only nine days left before the 1st, Mrs. Hudson.”
“I have been counting, too.” Adam was stirring between them. “Could I get you to prepare his bottle, please?”
“I will even give it to him. For you my love I would do everything.”
Sue was in the shower and Jack was getting dressed when someone knocked insistently at the door. His shirt unbuttoned and a quiet Adam on his shoulder, he opened the door. His landlord and his neighbor were furiously standing in front of him ready to yell. Their expression suddenly changed when they saw Jack and the baby. The only noise you could hear from the apartment was the running water. On the other hand Jack could hear noises from his neighbor apartment and he headed that way with Adam, the two men on his heels. From inside his neighbor’ apartment he could clearly make out a crying infant, way louder than Adam had ever been.
“You have been barking at the wrong tree”, Jack stating the obvious. “I could sue you for kicking us out on no ground.”
His landlord was very uncomfortable, and told his neighbor he would get back to him. In the meantime, if Jack could forget the misunderstanding, there was surely a way to settle it.
“There is”, said Jack, liking his leverage. “I will be buying a house, hopefully soon and moved out when it becomes available. I want my rent to be terminated without notice or penalty the day I move. I will write that down on a contract and expect you to sign it today.”
“Yes, Jack, no problem”, anything to avoid a lawsuit.
That day was turning into a great one, he thought as he walked back to his apartment.
During the morning Jack and Bobby went out to do some interviews, and Sue took advantage of their absence to do some errands of her own at the drugstore, their diaper supply was dangerously low. She left Adam at the daycare for twenty minutes and when she picked him up she regretted her decision, he had been crying the entire time again. She would have to come up with a different solution, he was too young for daycare.
Their afternoon at the rink was fabulous, skating hand in hand with Jack while Adam was safe against her in the snugli. They came home late, picked up pizza, popcorn and a movie and spent the evening on the couch all cuddled together.
Late that night, a phone call woke Garrett up. His kids were coming for Christmas, so he wondered which one was calling to say they were delayed. It ended up being none of them as he hung up the phone with a smile.
