I either have too much time on my hands or this is an early case of senility. I won’t ask for anyone’s opinion, just in case it doesn’t turn up in my favor. Anyways, this is the daily journal for the Black Book op as led by yours truly.
Oh, let’s do this for posterity.
This is the daily journal for Operation Black Book as recorded by Theodore Garrett. For the next 24 days, I will be keeping a close tab on the FBI’s most effective team – the one led by Jackson Hudson – and dutifully report here.
Operation Black Book is a case study of the interrelations between co-workers meant to be the basis for a rewriting of the FBI rulebook. Some of the rules in there are antiquated; and I personally cannot wait to see the most asinine of those antiquated rules go away. Seriously, someone before me had too much time on their hands to write such garbage: “Relationships amongst team members are prohibited by the Bureau and grounds for immediate dismissal or transfer”.
This journal will prove once and for all what horse rubbish that rule is. Anyone who’s ever seen Jack Hudson and Sue Thomas together will vouch for that; if their team can still be the best we’ve got with all the time they spend making goo-goo eyes at one another…

I may have picked the worst possible time to start this secret op. Why? Have you ever heard the expression ‘Misery likes company’? That’s why.
Bobby Manning is in the midst of an all-out depression; so the entire team is walking on eggshells to spare his feelings and try to get him out of the blue funk. Seriously, I thought he’d simply had a little fight with his lady friend - that reporter he’s been seeing. But based on my observations today, this isn’t just a little fall out; it’s more like he’s been pushed out of a rapidly moving car and onto oncoming traffic!
What was my first clue? I’m pretty certain it was the shouting match that drew me from my office into the Bullpen. There’s quite a voice on that Miss D’Angelo, even if she is rather diminutive. You can really tell she is a journalist by the extended vocabulary she can come up with. I had no idea there were so many synonyms for the word imbecile…
Speaking of which, I have a rule that would have made sense in the rulebook; forget about dating co-workers, think press. Isn’t that ten times worse than dating someone you work with? Imagine that scene if you will. Joe Smith goes home to his beloved significant other after a long hard day undercover. He’s had to mingle with the lower half of the DC Metro area all day, so it feels good to relax home with a good cup of wine – okay, most probably a beer – and good company. Before too long, the drink starts to work its magic and the tongue loosens up. Smith starts talking about the mission, or just dropping a few hints here and there. Next thing you know, the story has made front page news the day after when a ‘reliable source has revealed that the FBI are investigating such and such’… The Bureau looks for which head to cut and, lo and behold, discover Joe Smith is living with the reporter who wrote the article. Guess who will be busy pumping gas for the next 20 years? I’ll give you a clue: not the journalist!

Oh my gosh this is brilliant!!!! So is Ted writing this at the same time of your Bobby/Sasha story? Way cool -- and he absolutely does have to come to the conclusive evidence that the FBI rules are antiquated. That way we can all rest easy in fanflicland forever more. Haha -- I'm so glad I won't be the only one slogging away at a very behind story -- Myles and Tara are still on hold on Dec 2 -- maybe Ted can give them a push along!!!!
Looking forward to reading this.

Bobby Manning came into my office today and asked for 30 days of leave. That might have been a bit overly dramatic, but the guy does look like something the cat wouldn’t even dare drag in. If it were only me, I might have caved in; but I don’t really see how I could have explained to the Director that one of our best agent was out of the loop and incommunicado for a whole month because of a broken heart. I’m as creative as the next guy, but that might be pushing it.
But today proved I was right. With Bobby gone, Jack and Sue have started acting more in character; namely they’ve been busy looking at one another when they thought no one else was watching. If they only knew they’re my primary and only case for the foreseeable future.
I discovered something that threw me though. When did Myles start running circles around Tara? I don’t mean to be obtuse and prejudiced; but… Myles Leland and Tara Williams? Tara of the spunky attitude and feathery pens. And Boston-bred, Harvard-educated, blue-blooded Myles. I think the funkiest tie I’ve seen Myles wear in the past 10 years was red with fine silver pinstripes; so excuse me if I’m a bit shocked for lack of a better word.
My observations for the day – well rather, the afternoon?
Jack watched Sue for a total of 4 hours, 18 minutes and 45 seconds.
Sue watched Jack for a total of 4 hours, 37 minutes and 13 seconds.
Myles watched Tara for a total of 2 hours and 49 seconds.
Tara didn’t look away from her computer – at all.
Lucy spent entirely too much time watching Jack, Sue and Myles.
My conclusion: office romances should be encouraged if only to keep others from spending so much time wondering when you’ll finally make a move.

Now I know I’ve been supervisor too long cause I forgot how to plan a covert op. The team may work long hours and weekends, but I’m not supposed to. I have to come up with a plausible reason to spend my weekends in the office… and not just for the team either. Marge will have a fit when I tell her I can’t go to her mother’s. Hey, that should work! All the guys on the team – even is they’re all single with the exception of Dimitrius – will understand I’d prefer coming to the office than going to my mother-in-law’s.
Now I know I must really keep that journal out of the house. With Marge’s uncanny ability to find what she isn’t supposed to, it’s safer if I lock this in my desk – far away from here.
I’ve started thinking. I don’t know how much success this project will have if I let the agents to their own devices. They’re really responsible people and really mindful of regulations; so I don’t see them openly defying the rulebook just so I can get it amended. Maybe I need to think of a few situations to push them into each other’s arms. After all, it’s not like the spark isn’t already there!
Hmm, what to do first. Spruce up the Bullpen with mistletoe hanging from the ceiling every 5 feet or so? Nah, too obvious… maybe every 8 feet or so. Spike the coffee? On second thought, why waste good alcohol on a substance that could prove corrosive? I’m surprised they still have a stomach after drinking so many liters of the stuff. I mean, I only drank one cup yesterday and had heartburn all through the night. Marge thought I was having a heart attack…
Oh no, that would be too mean. I can’t do that to them. No, really… well, okay maybe. Sue is hyper sensitive since Jack’s heart attack, so if they witnessed someone they work with – me – having a heart attack (I won’t go to these lengths, but I used to be a pretty decent actor when on the job), that might bring them closer and make them rethink the whole situation.
Okay, it’s decided; I need to see a doctor to find out all the symptoms of a heart attack.

I had forgotten how uncomfortable couches were. Oh, they’re okay if you only have to recline on them to watch a good movie; but it’s a different story when you have to sleep on them... Yeah, Marge really didn’t like my not going to her mother’s and found a way to share her feelings with me.
At least, I am glad to report I made some headway with the whole Hudson/Thomas situation; though not entirely on my own. Maybe I should consider giving a few more days off to Bobby for unknowingly helping out. From what I gathered, Jack and Sue dropped by for a visit yesterday only to be greeted at the door by a very disheveled and inebriated Bobby. It really tears at my heart to realize the magnitude of his suffering; but a part of me has to be realistic and acknowledge that – because of him - Jack and Sue spent quite a lot of time putting their head together to find a way to help him out. Maybe not the most romantic setting or disposition, but every great operation needs to start somewhere!
As for the Leland/Williams pairing, I am still coming to grasp with that one and trying to size the situation. While it’s quite obvious Myles is ensnared; it’s Tara I’m confused about. I’ve always been in awe of her observational skills – I mean she can find the proverbial needle in the hay stack and has proven it time and again – so she can’t be that oblivious to Myles’ growing attraction.
I’m giving her a week and if she still doesn’t get a clue, I just might have to provoke a reaction. She’s such a genius with a computer, maybe I could get someone to set up a live feed of the Bullpen straight to her monitor to provide visual proof of Myles’ antics.
Note to self: Contact someone in the IT department to see if it’s even possible to do this; otherwise I will need a plan B.
I’m still keeping the heart attack angle in mind… just in case.
Now, can someone just tell me where Lucy Dotson was today?

Is there romance in the air or is that only the smell of Myles’ new cologne? Jack and Sue actually stopped playing the cat and mouse game today and openly looked at one another. I know I was not the only one noticing that; but it seems I am the only one missing an important piece of the puzzle. Lucy was looking at them as if her dog had died.
Speaking of dogs, I’ve noticed Jack has quite a way with Sue’s. That’s got to be a good omen; after all they say animals are the best judge of a person’s character. I’d say they’re also the best way to spend 1K a year, but that’s just me. I’m no animal lover – probably because I never got to have a pet growing up and by now… well, you don’t teach an old dog new tricks. Ah, I crack myself up sometimes.
So back on track. Lucy devised a plan to cheer Agent Heartbreak Hotel (I’ve always wished I’d seen Bobby in that undercover assignment. Elvis with an Australian accent… why not?). I will most definitely give her a bonus this year because she not only had a good idea to brighten Bobby’s days, she got Tara to volunteer to work with Myles and Jack to associate with Sue – not that it takes much to accomplish that feat.
Maybe I could ask Dimitrius Gans to help me out. I mean as the only other married agent in close proximity with the targets, he’s bound to have a few tricks up his sleeves. He’s probably rooting for a Jack and Sue pairing just like about everyone else. Wonder what his views are on that other couple in the making. He works with them every day; he probably knows things I would not be privy to, being supervisor and all.
Oh yeah, I got Marge to forgive me today. All I had to do was admit to a romantic streak. Okay, that wasn’t all there was to it: I had to sit through her teasing me about it for an entire evening. The worst part was when she called her family to share that tidbit of info. I still cringe just thinking about it. Christmas will definitely be awkward for me this year…

I actually wonder what happened to him too. Those have got to be the longest vacations in FBI history!
I wonder if the FBI has a book of records. I could just see it:
Most expedient destruction of regulation wheels: Bobby Manning [45 minutes]
Most lenghty vacation time: Ted Garrett [3 months and still counting]

I’ve heard Lucy’s plan was a rousing success. When Manning comes back on Monday, he should be back to being his usual self – which I agree could be a scary concept on any other day. But not as scary as having him work with Ms. D’Angelo. Now that’s what you may call an invitation for all heck to break loose.
I thought that day had come earlier today in the Bullpen when I heard the sound of glass crashing and frantic shouting from various agents – with Myles’ voice leading the chaotic choir. The sight that greeted me when I rushed there – along with the visiting US Attorney General – will stay with me for quite some time. I don’t think I’ll ever quite look at Leland the same way.
I’m not sure who thought to bring a tree to the Bullpen – it’s a toss between Williams and Dotson; what with their cheery outlook on life and all. Considering the outcome, I’d be inclined to think Tara was the instigator – Lucy would have had experience with Sue’s dog and known better. Do you see what I am leading to here? I’ll spell it out for you, just in case.
Imagine, if you will, a 5 foot tree standing close to the coffee machine, being lovingly decorated by the team – that is before Leland jumped in with his usual endearing manners and started directing the working crew, dictating to his fellow agents where every single ornament should be put for “added impact and visual harmony”. Where he comes up with this stuff, I’ll never want to know. Anyways, as you can imagine, Myles was soon left to his own devices in the tree decorating department and from what I heard – doing a bang up job of it too. I heard the tree was coming along pretty well when Levi decided he liked the dangling ornaments gently swaying…
The crashing glass sound came not only from the ornaments falling from the tree as it tipped over under the weigh of the exuberant Retriever; but also from the full coffee pots that were pushed to the ground when the tree fell towards the coffee machine. The frantic shouting was a direct result of people seeing the disaster coming and trying to warn Levi off. Myles’ voice really picked up in volume though when he tried to save the situation and catch the falling tree before it did any more damage, only to slip on the spilled coffee and end up in a decidedly disgraceful heap on the floor… a heap soon covered by the falling tree. Luckily, Bobby and Dimitrius caught the brunt of the tree’s weight so Myles was not hurt. His ego is another story though.
He is now pretty upset with Levi – blaming him for his bum back, his ruined Armani suit and the fall of the “Mighty Tree of Unity”. Don’t ask; I didn’t.
Did anything good come from the Bullpen disaster? You bet! Tara was seen hovering over Myles for quite a long time, continually checking up on him for signs of commotion. If that isn’t a precursor to a great love story, I don’t know what is!

The FBI sure employs ingenious people… with a wicked sense of humor. When I checked on the Bullpen today, I saw it had been graced with a new tree – if I may call it that. Seems Tara brought enough Christmas garlands with her to draw the outline of a tree on the wall where the previous ill-fated tree had been set up. Sue pitched in by writing on a white sheet of paper ‘Mighty Tree of Unity’. Finally, Dimitrius added his personal touch by placing a makeshift tombstone with RIP on it just above said sheet. I thought this was pretty imaginative.
Nothing much happened today to further operation Black Book. We got a new lead came in this afternoon on the case and the team had to investigate. Seems a Santa distributed a load of the corrupted TFT toys to the George Washington University Hospital… Sue and Jack will be interrogating the little patients who were unlucky enough to get those. Maybe seeing kids will bring them closer together and make them see what great kids they eventually could have together.
But I’m getting ahead of myself here. Oh, and Marge vetoed the heart attack plan. I told her unless she could provide me with another brilliant alternative, I was keeping it as backup. So now my dear wife is busily seeking ways to help me push Hudson and Thomas together. How brilliant can I be, really?

Jack and Sue came into the Bullpen after their stint at the hospital, telling us they saw Manning and that he has a new girlfriend! I might be more ecstatic if it wasn’t for the fact she works at the hospital we are now investigating. Oh, they said something too about him being the Santa who unknowingly delivered the toys, but it’s not what really concerns me now.
I am considering putting a shadow on Manning full-time. Not because he delivered the toys and I suspect him of wrong-doing: I know he’s a dedicated and honest agent. It’s his dating habits I am having a problem with. I mean, does he have to work hard at it or does it come naturally? First, a newspaper journalist who had been out to get him and the Bureau for violating Americans’ rights to privacy; now a nurse working at the hospital they investigated? What next? A professional driver in a hit and run case?
This op is getting more bizarre and we’re only on the 9th day! I don’t even want to think of what could happen until December 25… I need to call a summit meeting with Marge, she’ll know what to do. Maybe I can have her shadow Manning and report to me – she always boasted to me she’d had made an excellent private investigator: time for her to put her money where her mouth is.

I married an ace investigator and I didn’t even know it! Marge not only found out Manning is not dating this Shasha – she’s a patient in the hospital – she also found out we are making headway with the Jack/Sue angle. She apparently ran into them in the lobby of the Hoover building and heard Jack tell Sue they were going to the hospital. Now, since we thought Bobby’s new girl worked there, Marge figured it was worth checking out – and that it wouldn’t hurt anything if she learned a few things on our #1 couple.
I didn’t know those specialty stores with all the espionage gadgets carried out bugs, did you? Well my beloved knew (I’ll have to sweep my clothes every day now just to be sure she did not plant one on me – I so didn’t need that aggravation). She arranged to bump into Jack by the elevators when they waited for one; and in doing so, attached a bug to his coat. It was only a simple task from there to use the headset she had on to listen to everything the bug picked up. No one was the wiser that she was not listening to a portative CD player…
So let’s recapitulate what Marge – or Special Agent M as I will refer to her from now on – found out on her little expedition today.
· Manning is still single – solution to delay any further problems: find him a date, one I’ll choose.
· Thomas has been monitoring Jack’s love life closely – good for her!
· Hudson has not been dating since August this year – I think we’re making progress.
· He’s not denying his attraction to her; otherwise he’d have pretended not to notice she provided an actual date to his last social outing with the opposite gender.
· Jack doesn’t understand women – well he’s not the only one. I’ll send him his club card when this mission is over. I’ve been a card-carrying member for 25 years now.
· Jack’s comment about being puzzled for life… Is he intending to propose to Thomas? That would be bold – skip the dating, go straight to the marrying part. Not for the faints of heart, that’s for sure.
· Keep Jack away from the hospital and the buxom nurse. For that matter, keep Manning away from her too. Even better, let’s keep EVERYONE away from her. We’re encountering enough delays with this op without adding to it.

I had no idea so much could go on in the Bullpen on weekends! First, I found Manning sitting at his desk bright and early working on the case. He is really taking this case personally, what with him delivering the gifts and everything. I tried to make him understand he was not at fault, but I am not sure he listened. Maybe I should sic Special Agent M on him to make sure she talks sense to him. God knows she’s talked a circle around me on numerous occasions.
Then, Dimitrius Gans showed up with his teenage daughter. Boy, he must have his hands full with her – but she seems like a riot. One thing is for sure: Hudson is setting hearts aflutter aplenty. Got to love the fresh enthusiasm of puppy love, though. I wonder if I could get my agents to experiment that rush during the Holidays? Sue and Jack look like the ones promising the best results with the less prodding; so maybe I should center my efforts on couple #2. Marge can cover Jack and Sue. I think Myles and Tara will demand a more direct approach.
Tara apparently only reacts to Myles when there is trauma involved. Bobby’s traumatic experience with Ms. D’Angelo prompted her to enroll Myles in a ‘find a tree for Bobby campaign’. Myles’ fall out with the office tree guaranteed him her attention for all of 2 days… So basically, the bigger the problem, the more attention she gives him.
Too bad I am a nice guy; I could have arranged for a few thugs to gently ‘rough up’ Myles. That should have warranted him a full week of personalized care by the spunky miss Williams. Arrange for his sister Anne’s kidnapping? He should be properly distressed seeing the inroads the Leland kids had been making over the past few months. And Myles distressed should rouse all of Tara’s protective instincts.
Now, no worry, I won’t really kidnap Anne. What I’ll do though is pay for a 2 weeks vacation in a very private resort, courtesy of the Bureau. Put her in protective custody so no activity show up in her name – Myles will never know what hit him.
Cupid has nothing on me.

Manning is coming back to work tomorrow, so phase FBD will be able to begin. Phase FBD is jargon for phase ‘Find Bobby a Date’… we thought it would look and sound more efficient, Marge and me. I’ll definitely need to keep my eyes on Manning and Dotson. They’re the only 2 unspoken for in this stint operation; so wouldn’t it be great to match those two together? Just have to see if there is even a spark to ignite.
Anne Leland has been whisked away to Hawaii for a week-long overdue vacation. Mrs. Carrington should arrive at the Waikiki Spa and Resort Hotel this afternoon. Can you tell Marge was a fan of Dynasty in a previous life? Really… Krystle Carrington – try and keep low on the radar with a name like that! But Marge figured with a blue blood background the likes of the Lelands, the name would fit appropriately. And wouldn’t you know that there just so happens to be a Marge clone in the witness protection office who agreed with her? The world is such a scary place when you consider the ramifications of 2 Marges roaming the DC streets…
Myles should start getting properly worried when Anne doesn’t show up Tuesday for their usual lunchtime appointment. Note the keyword here is appropriately; and that’s not good enough. So, knowing him, he’ll call her cell phone and get no answer. So he will call her house and of course not get any answer there either. That’s when he’ll decide to stop by the house and get quite a shock when he finds it ransacked. That was his sister’s idea. I told Anne that it might give him a heart attack – at which point I realized that would fit into my hand quite nicely cause then THAT would bring Sue and Jack closer – while I still did not go against Marge. She did veto the heart attack angle if I did it, not if anyone else did it.
The key to success in any operation is how good are the people you surround yourself with. I have to say that, in this case, we are the virtuosi of the undercover operations world!

With all my years on the terrain, I have learned long ago that your life doesn’t flash before your eyes when you think you will most decidedly never live to see another day. Well, today I learned that an entire case can flash before your eyes when you think you’re about to witness it going down the drain.
How did I discover that? The minute I saw Bobby Manning and that investigative reporter from heck Darcy D’Angelo talking in the Bullpen. I thought for sure Ms. D’Angelo would have realized the error of her ways and begged to be let back into Manning’s life. Seeing how heartbroken he had been over her, the risks were very real to me that he would take her back… and then where would that have left me? Without Manning available, no trying to match him with Dotson. With Manning back and happy, the Anne Leland disappearing act would be uncovered just like that. I mean come on, have you ever seen Bobby Manning in track mode? There’s a reason this team is the best, and it’s not just because of secret weapon Sue Thomas! I’m not saying either that Special Agent Bobby Manning is the new craze; just that this entire team is made up of individuals with enough talents to propel them to the top.
Where was I? Oh yeah, Manning tracks down Anne Leland and they discover the setup – just not who’s behind it. Result is still the same, Myles is not miserable so Tara does not get near him. Manning is still blissfully happy, so no help from there either to bring Leland and Williams closer. The only probable good thing that could be salvaged is if Leland does have a heart attack seeing his sister’s house. That would still mean hope for Hudson and Thomas to get closer there when they realize life is too short, yaddi, yadda.
That’s what went through my mind in the 5 seconds it took to hear the raised voices. It was like heaven opened up its doors and shone its light down on me. We were still on! I just wanted to march right in there and take that obnoxious little blonde-turned-brown reporter and show her the exit before my good luck turned again. But then I heard voices down the corridor that really warmed my heart. Myles and Tara, probably walking hand in hand towards the Bullpen? When they rounded the corner, I saw it was the next best thing to holding hands: they were arguing. That had to be a sure sign from God that He approved of my plan. They looked just like Marge and me…

"So now my dear wife is seeking ways to help me push Hudson and Thomas together" you gotta love a man who knows he's out of his element and pulls in the big guns!!!
"Special Agent M." and "Summitt meeting with Marge."
"Keep Jack away from the buxom nurse. For that matter, keep Manning away from her too. Even better, let's keep everyone away from her!" I like a man with a clear vision, concise priorities and knows enough to keep Jack safe from himself!!!!
The plotting of poor Myles' trauma -- Garrett has a cruel streak there -- but then there is a saying "love is cruel" right?
"Cupid has nothing on me." That's way too funny!!!!
"Find Bobby a Date" -- I wonder who that date will end up being????? Very curious!!
This is just too much fun.

I needn’t have worried about Manning being back – if he keeps it up, he just might be gone for a while longer… on suspension. I’m not surprised the DEA would have goofballs for agents; but I was rather disappointed to see we had one in our ranks as well. I thought I had only fairly well adjusted people working under me, but maybe the D’Angelo fiasco has damaged Manning’s brain. It’s the only rational explanation I see to the brawl that happened in the Bullpen today. Really not conducive to office romances.
The closest we came to any hint at romance was when Manning told Hudson that at the rate this investigation was going, they would all still be there on Jack’s wedding day. I have to give credit where credit is due: that was a pretty good line! Now if only it stepped from the line realm into the reality realm. With so many people rooting for Jack and Sue to be together, you’d think the actual making it happen would be easier.
I heard Bobby ask the rest of the team to meet him at the hospital tonight so they could distribute gifts to the kids who saw theirs being taken back for the sake of the investigation. Now, that ought to put them all in the right frame of mind. Sick children, hospital, and impending couples. Always a winner in my book. The women will get all weepy, the men will have to comfort them… and voila.
Will have to keep my ear to the ground – or more accurately to the Bullpen door – tomorrow morning. Unless…
Time to call Special Agent M with a mission for her. Hope she didn’t have anything planned tonight.

Yeah, come on Jack see the light aka SUE!
I am having funny images of Garrett when he was a field agent- sort of a Bobby style person. One to watch out for!
Well i am sure you do plenty of Bobby watching!

If you read my other Christmas challenge - the 25 days of Christmas - you'll have your answer. I am writing those 2 stories to go hand in hand. Well rather, this story relies on what happens in the 25 days of Christmas as a timeframe.
You should see me as I write this. I have the 25 days of Christmas challenge opened, then the FBI's black book. I read what happened that day in 25 days and build around it on Black book.

Yeah, come to think of it, 'Big Bro' mode sums up Bobby & Sue perfectly. I saw that ep today to, and I have to admit I'd like Dan if he was just a friend to Sue, like a Bobby or a D but outside work, but I can't take to the idea of a romance, when we ALL know that ought to be Jack.
Seems a bit down on Levi though, if he doesn't stay friends with Nikita.

Is nothing sacred anymore? Have I been out of the loop for so long that I get it all wrong? Since when are the guys the one getting weepy over sick children and the women are there to comfort them? I thought I would have to resuscitate Marge when we talked last night after her trek at the hospital.
She came in, looking pretty dreamy so I knew the children had gotten to her. So far, everything was going according to plan – I mean, if my no-nonsense wife can get this dreamy look when coming home from a children ward… surely the Sue, Tara and Lucy of this world don’t stand a chance.
The trouble, however, started when I asked one question I now wish I hadn’t. I asked her who had needed the most comforting in the whole bunch. So not the right question. Here is a transcript of the conversation as it went down.
Me: “So how did it go at the hospital? Found out anything good?”
Marge: “Oh that I did. I never would have thought…”
Me: “Thought what?”
Marge: simply sighs dreamily as she hangs her coat on the rack.
Me: “Thought what, Marge?”
Marge: “What? Oh, that Bobby Manning could be so charming.”
Me: “Oh, yeah he’s quite the lady’s man. What I want to know is – Who needed the most comforting? Was it Sue? I’m betting it was Tara, she’s such a sensitive little thing.”
Marge: “Oh, it was Bobby.”
Me: “WHAT???”
Marge: “You should have seen him with that little girl, he was so tender with her, caressing her cheek as she slept. He’s really fallen for her. Turns out she’s the Shasha we thought was his girlfriend.”
Me: staring at her in open shock.
Marge: quite oblivious as she goes on. “Sue had to take Bobby aside and talk to him, he really looked shaken up. I don’t think he ever expected to lose his heart to a pint-size raven-haired beauty.”
Me: now gawking at my wife. “Pint-size raven-haired beauty? Have you hit your head, dear?”
Marge: just now noticing the expression on my face. “What’s wrong Ted?”
Me: “Manning needed comforting? What about Tara, or Sue.. or Lucy for that matter?”
Marge: “No. I mean they were smitten but mostly with Bobby.”
Me: “WHAT???”
Marge: starts laughing hysterically.
She later told me – after she was done laughing: 30 minutes later – that the expression on my face had been priceless.
I don’t know about priceless, but I need to do some damage control. I can’t have Sue and Tara be smitten with Bobby! The swine, why did he have to go and mess up my carefully orchestrated plan?
Hang on, someone at the door…
Oh no! The Santas from Bedlam have Sue and Tara. Need to get going to help look for them.

Judging by the distressed look on his face, I think our dear boy Jack caught on that Sue mattered to him. A little slow on the uptake, but I’ll cut him some slack: it really is a trying time.
Myles on the other hand seems as cool and collected as ever. Just maybe a bit more overbearing and controlling. I heard Lucy talking to Sue and she was saying how frantic Myles was. What? Where? That’s Myles frantic? I thought it was Myles every other day of the week. Seem I might have to observe him more closely in the future to grasp all the fine nuances of his moods. They’re very fine if anyone asks me.
With all that, I don’t think Myles has even had the chance to worry about Anne. The joke has been on me because he called to cancel Tuesday because of the hospital trek, and with Tara missing and everything, I don’t think he has called to check on her again. Do you have any idea how expensive an all-expenses paid trip to the Waikiki Spa is? Now, I can never have back that moment. I won’t be able to use it again the next time Tara is oblivious to Myles. On the other hand, maybe being taken hostage will have softened her up a bit.
Right now, the team has gone to get Thomas and Williams back. Thomas’ informant has come through for us big time and provided us with their location. I wish I could have gone with them but I’m Supervisor, I am no longer allowed on the terrain. Just another of those rules that suck in the FBI rulebook.
I hear voices in the corridor, let me go check it out. It might be them.
I’m back. It was them, minus 3. Manning, Thomas and Hudson were missing, but I learned why. Jack got shot to protect Sue. Hallelujah, he is finally catching on!
Myles could not keep from touching Tara, and I wonder if anyone else but me noticed that she was not pulling away? This day has been blessed!

I overheard Williams talking to Dotson and telling her – and I quote – that “Operation Sue&Jack is well on its way”. Great minds really do think alike it seems. Between Operation Black Book and Operation Sue&Jack, Hudson and Thomas absolutely have NO hope of remaining singles for very long. If only those 2 matchmakers knew I’m on their side… what fun we could have all playing and planning together. But then, Williams might catch on that I’m trying to make her and Leland an item. There’s safety in numbers: the LESS people know about Black Book, the safer it is for me.
Special Agent M has decided to park herself at the hospital today and to snoop around about that Shasha and Manning. Usually, where there’s a kid, there’s a mother… so we’re covering all angles. We don’t want an unpleasant surprise springing up – I never was very fond of Jacks in the Box.
Now to my favorite topic these days: Leland and Williams. The odd reader may not know that Leland is the proud owner of a dog called Gracie – seems people have gone pooch-crazy since Levi Thomas made his way to the Bureau. Anyways, the new addition to the dog-walking club is none other than miss Tara Williams. How convenient is that I ask you? Almost makes me believe Williams is not as uninterested as she is trying to have us believe. I mean, come on! Leland has a dog he walks on a regular path; and Williams happen to have a dog she walks on the same path? They live in the opposite side of town from each other!
Okay, so the eternal pessimist might say that there’s nothing to get excited about: the regular path is the park in front of the Hoover building – the same park Thomas uses to walk her dog. But I prefer to see the glass half full… or in this case, the arrow fully imbedded in the little heart of a pint-sized agent!
Did I tell you that Cupid had nothing on me? I thought it was worth reiterating.

Bless Manning’s unlucky streak – it’s not only providing me and the troops with comedic relief, it’s also bringing Hudson and Thomas closer. I could probably make a fortune writing the ‘sagas of Manning’. His latest predicament, you ask? Getting thrown in the loony bin. I know it has absolutely NOTHING to do with this operation, but it’s too good to pass up. You’ll thank me for it, I promise.
You see, Manning has been visiting the hospital quite often because of this unknown Shasha kid and there was always this nurse – Mandy whatshername – at the nurses desk. Seems it became a running joke that she was always there. Anyways, she wasn’t there today and of course Manning mentioned that. Well, it turns out that there is NO Mandy working there, at least not on that floor. But Manning couldn’t let this go quietly and decide to investigate (which we’ll do now, thank you). No! He had to insist on describing her and the times she had been there when he had visited.
Next thing you know, the little men in white – the ones with those funky shirts with the really, REALLY long sleeves – showed up and brought him down to the psych ward. Hudson being such a good friend and all, he was the one called to the rescue. He was very happy to go spring Manning out after he was done rolling on the floor in the Bullpen. Well, not quite literally rolling on the floor, but you get the drift – it’s called writer’s license. Of course, he brought Thomas with him. As her mentor, I don’t know if he figures that this is something that will happen often enough that he needs to show her what to do… I guess with Manning around there is always a possibility.

Garrett is so funny. I can't watch him in the same way any more. Every time he's in a scene I hear a snippet from this story and I just about die laughing. He has a whole new dimension now!

A/N: Thank you cellogirl for the continued support and feedback.
Sunday, December 19, 2004Marge has told me if I don’t add a side mission to this operation, she is walking out on the whole setup. She may be an ace investigator, but she’s still a woman – in this case, a woman who found out Shasha was orphaned. Couple that with the feelings she saw Manning had for this kid and guess what you come up with? Bingo! Operation get Manning married so he can adopt the kid. You can’t tell from the writing, but I’m actually rolling my eyes right now. What does she expect me to do? Hand out applications? Wouldn’t that just look swell!
OPERATION DREAM DATEThe FBI is holding a raffle to come to the aid of little Shasha Taylor who lost both her parents in a tragic accident earlier this month. The proceeds of this event will go towards paying for the wedding of Special Agent Manning and the adoption of said Shasha Taylor.
What does the winner of this raffle win? The chance to wed one of DC’s most eligible bachelor: 6’2”, eyes of blue, Australian accent and charm oozing from every pore of his (from what I heard) to-die-for body. And did I mention he loved kids? Come on ladies, be generous… it’s for a good cause; and what have you got to lose – aside from your single status and some sleep?
Really! I think my lovely shrew of a wife forgot that I was a FBI supervisor, not a miracle worker! I’ll see about talking to the child’s service agent assigned to this kid, see if I could get a good word in for Manning. I’m all about playing matchmakers, but I don’t exactly intend to have any of them marry on Christmas here!

I feel like this whole mission has taken on a Manning air lately. But something is definitely up with him. He took Lucy aside and whispered in her ear… Knowing his reputation, maybe there IS something to work with here. Can you imagine that: Manning and Dotson. Now we’re talking! I’ve seen them together on and off all day long. What was that Neil Diamond song? Oh yeah. Love is in the air…
Leland and Williams… Where do I begin? Or more accurately, when did they begin? There’s been some major thawing out happening there! I didn’t know Leland had it in him to be charming; but whatever he did seems to be working because each morning, I see them walking into the Bullpen at the same time… They said it was only because they walk their dogs at the same time but I am not buying into that. If they really just came back from walking the dogs, I have a question for them: WHERE ARE THE DOGS? That’s simple, straight-forward and very to the point. Because, unless you have imaginary dogs, you can’t walk them and have them conveniently disappear because you’re due in the office. Can’t believe no one called them on it yet. And I’m not supposed to be eavesdropping so I can’t make the point myself. So frustrating…
That leaves me with Hudson and Thomas. I feel like I am watching a tango with those two. One step forward, two steps back… go sideways and spin out of control. The problem does not seem to lie with Thomas; but rather with Hudson. It’s like he gets skittish and moves away. If I didn’t know better, I’d think the man was still a virgin. Wait a minute, I DON’T know any better… maybe he is!
Oh my gosh!
How do I broach that subject? And more to the point: to whom?

Someone else finally noticed that Manning has been distracted lately. I remember writing that he was one of the best tracker I had seen in many years… Well, the dear boy wouldn’t be able to track his way out of a paper bag these days. He’s still a very fine investigator though. He uncovered a series of clues that brought him to a killer – the one responsible for little Shasha’s parents’ demise. Long story and not for this brief.
Anyways, Sue – she’s the someone who noticed – saw Manning tease Leland when they were searching that perp’s house and she figured he had not realized things had changed around him. She was talking to Lucy (I just love her when she speaks and signs… makes it easier on me to eavesdrop) and telling her how Myles had been ribbing Bobby about when he would be adopting the kid. And she said Bobby smirked back that he’d probably adopt her the day Myles convinced Tara to marry him.
I can’t decide if this was an optimistic outlook on how soon he can adopt that little girl – which means he would have noticed the changes in the air – or just that he had been clueless enough not to notice the love vapors between those two. In a way, I’m almost wishing for the second because it does not look good on the adoption front. The fact he is single and has a dangerous career is really putting him in the ‘not in this lifetime, pal’ category. I don’t get it. If he were to be married, he could have as many dangerous jobs as he wanted, it wouldn’t matter. No, that’s not the hard to get part, I’m getting to it. The thing that makes me tick is that his wife could ALSO work a dangerous job and they would still be able to adopt. I suppose they figure that the odds of both parents dying at the same time are low. I have a small piece of advice for them: stay away from casinos.

Oh my goodness!!! How did I miss this story? Jaycey, this is great!! I love the way you're working this around your other Christmas entry; it fits together so well! And of course, you know I never mind a good M/T love story...
